View Full Version : Discovery, Personal, and Faction Time Line (fluff idea)

It would serve no purpose other than being cool and, giving bragging rights to some. So here is what I mean

Jack had mentioned that we will be able to explore and discovery places and items never seen before. I am personally hoping for them to take this further in a form of crafting. Allowing tinkering of crafted items and the use of newly discovered materials. (a little of topic but, I really hope the discoverer can name all inanimate objects they find first. That's one of the perks of discovery)

So say we get all these different avenues of opportunity to discover the unknown. I think it would be neat to be able to access the computer on your ship and see a real-time time line. Showing every discovered planet, race, element, etc. Showing the time and location of the discovery. It could show the name of the captain that discovered the item along with the info. They could even go as far as having a prewritten text as a mock up journal entry from the discovering captain. With their name signed at the bottom. This would be the discovery time line.

The personal time line would be a visual queue for your captains logs. Showing all your personal discoveries, mentionable battles and diplomacy, extended leave (not logging in for a while) etc. You could also manually enter texts yourself. Making your own entries to your captains log (for all use RPers).

The faction time line is the same. It would be all the discoveries accredited to the faction, plus any large PvP battles, in game events, etc.

The game would need a constant time and star date from the launch date. Say one month of real time is equal to one year in game for example.

Something along the lines of WAR's (WAAAAAGH!) Tome of Knowledge would be very cool.

I'd settle for a personal log system, though. :D

This does seem like a relatively easy to implement idea, albeit fluff, but I think it would give hardcore RPers more of an outlet, and at the same time bring the galaxy to life. Things are actually happening, your actions do have results...

war's ToK is a great idea for STO especially for all the Lore knowledge it can cointain

What I'd like to see is some sort of "souveneer" system where you get some sort of physical evidence of your accomplishments that you can use to decorate your Ready Room or Quarters.

SWG had this. You would get cool looking deco for your home after doing certain quest. It would be cool to use your ready room and quarters, heck your whole ship to hang momentos and trophies.

Excellent ideas. Maybe add in that technology would advance as well and newer starships would be developed and made availible as older ships of the line would be decommissioned.

I'm in favor of both a Captains log kind of "achievement tracker" and a decor item reward system for mementos of missions completed.

Something like this would be a great addition to the game, and if it isn't too time-consuming to develop, I would like to see it in the game at some point. Great idea!

Not a bad idea. It could work. Lets see if they touch on it.

I would agree, but the Federation aesthetic is far more SPARTAN!!! than some would like. The only decorations you ever see in the corridors are chairs, plants, and a painting; ONLY in a sitting area.

So maybe, but doubtful.

Ummm but you see all kinds of decor in crew's quarters and this is where it should go in your personal quarters or your ready room.

This would certainly add alot to the atmosphere and 'history' of a server as time progresses if all of the first contacts and discoveries, who, what, when, where, and maybe any later 'important' developments (like say, Race G allying/joining the Federation) recorded and accessible to all.

The decoration idea would also be rather good as, in the two games I've played that have had similar abilities (UO and SWG) alot of people took a great deal of pride in their customised house (in this case Quarters, though if you think about it, being able to customise tiny details on the bridge such as the name plaque would be interesting as well).

While in the series most quarters are very bland and uniform, they're still different. Picard has his fish and the model of the Stargazer in his ready room, Spock had some Vulcan items/banners I recall, in 'Space Seed' Micgivers has paintings and sculptures all over her quarters.

So basically, yes they are generally all the same shape, all the same furnishings and colour, they do also have potential for 'decoration' I think.

I origionally mentioned those two locations. I doubt it you will have decoration access to crew quarters or anyplace else in the "whole ship."

This is a great idea! as some of you have said maybe even if your ship finds a race that offers new technology that would be a great improvement could maybe get their name in the holo logs or something in the star fleet HQ in San fransisco(sp?)
I love the idea especially as a RPer.

Why? It has already said they want to give us some level of customization when it comes to the parts of the ship we can access (Bridge, Engineering, Medical) why would adding one room as the captains quarters be that outrageous?

I love the idea, its really good, perhaps a more detailed version for each person, maybe including PvP battles you've won, or diplomatic ties that you have achieved. While their would be a faction(Star Fleet HQ/Klingon Council) version for the server which would portray events that effect the servers relations between players and major quests/events that players completed with a list of those who helped.

While the decor for your quarters/ready room is a great idea, having come from MxO its something the players have long wanted but the Devs can't seem to make it fit into the engine/storyline. STO has a ready made reason to have personal medals and decor.

As far as deck decor. It doesn't need to be pictures, statues, trinkets, etc. It could be new electronic devices and interfaces you mount in different areas of your ship. The items could grant buffs or special skills.
