Please read the entire thread before posting, it will save all of us some time and wear on our digits. Thank you.

Anyone else have problems viewing the 1280x720 movies (http://startrekonline.com/trailer)? I first tried the WMV in Windows with Windows Media Player, but the video was jumpy and hard to watch (with nothing else running). So I tried both MPlayer and XINE on the WMV and MOV in Linux, with the similar issues on the WMV. The MOV...the video played fine, but the audio was about 10s ahead of the video. I tried the same on a relatively new computer (Intel Core Duo 2GHz). Both machines have plenty of RAM (2Gb+) and fair to really good video cards (both play Lord of the Rings Online just fine). XINE even complains (at the end of the video) that the WMV is a broken file.

That's two different computers, two different operating systems, with three different media players (not three each), with similarly unwatchable results.

Makes me fear this quote from the trailer page (http://startrekonline.com/videos):
This trailer is created with 100 percent in-engine gameplay footage. What you see is what you'll play!

Works fine. Get a better computer imo.

As I stated, one computer is considered "fast", while the other may not, but both can play games which require quite a bit more processing power than a movie file (both can play DVDs, which required decrypting a video stream along with rendering it, unlike these). I am also able to watch other videos (some even HD) just fine on both of these machines, only the 1280x720 videos from here cause problems.

Wow if your having trouble running a movie I thnk bigs might be right. I mean if your comparing a computer to being fast by demonstrating that it can play a DVD I'm not sure if we can rely on your definition of "fast".

Are you downloading these or steaming them?

Works fine in Quicktime. I never use Windows Media to play anything. I haven't tried the other apps, but I can say with experience that Quicktime Pro works. :)

Not the streaming, I downloaded the WMV and MOV versions of the video. In case it matters, I can play the webcast (http://startrekonline.com/node/75) just fine on both boxes in both operating systems.

By jumpy, I mean it'll be going along normally, then all of a sudden the video will stop, or the audio will stop, while the other continues, then it'll jump to another frame/segment further along, or in one case, the video will seem to be playing normally, but the audio will be 10s in the future. For Windows, I just have the standard codecs that come with it, no 3rd party codecs installed. For Linux, I'm using XINE and MPlayer to try and play it, both of which are capable of playing other videos (including HD and DVD) without issue, even when the CPU is already "in use" (e.g. by Lord of the Rings playing via WINE in another window, or the computer compiling a bunch of updates). To me, this shows it is not the computer, nor the software, but rather how the videos (at least the 1280x720 ones, since the others play fine) were encoded. As mentioned earlier, XINE mentions that one of the videos is broken (I didn't look into the details of how it said it's broken, I'm not a videophile and don't care).

In summary:

Other, higher resolution and larger (several gigs, for some) videos play fine
Other, higher resolution (and larger) videos play fine while the computer is otherwise busy (see above)
At least one of the files is reported as broken by at least one of the media players
This happens in multiple media players
This happens on multiple operating systems
This happens on multiple computers

I've had the same problem with game trailers over the last few months.

My games themselves all play fine and my machine isn't a piece of junk, but I must be missing a magic codec or something, because the videos I download always have this same irritating video stutter.

lol ok. Well I read your post above the one I just quoted. Sounds like you're not getting the entire file. I had a similar problem and it ended up being connection related. I recommend resetting all of your IE settings on whatever computer you're using and try redownloading the file and WATCH it to make sure it doesn't download like 80% and then jump to finished. I had that problem and had to clear my temp internet files to get the whole thing. Do all of your computers share the same internet connection?

Please carefully read my post, I did not say it was fast because it could play DVDs, but that it was fast and could play DVDs, which require more processing than a simple MOV or WMV file. This machine was purchased as a new model within the last year, if a year-old machine is considered too old to play video files, then someone needs figure out how computers from five years ago were able to play video files.

I downloaded the movies, I hate streaming them. ;)

I hate Windows Media Player as well, but this machine is used mostly for gaming. ;) That's why I tried my other media players, which have worked for all other videos I've tried (including recent ones such as the HD Starcraft II and the normal Diablo III videos).

I have not tried QuickTime nor QuickTime Pro, nor will I since I got the smaller videos to play and wasn't too impressed, but thanks for the information. :)

It might be a missing codec on my end, except that the smaller versions (same format/codec AFAIK) play fine. Recent game trailers (e.g. the HD version for Starcraft II and the Diablo III videos) all played fine, even streaming (which I try not to do).

Ahh, thanks, I hadn't even thought of that. :) I'm downloading them again and will try after making sure they finish (I'll even compare the checksums with my old copies, just to see if I missed them not finishing last time).

Well, I've re-downloaded the files, no such luck. Here are the checksums:

$ md5sum {,old/}STO_Trailer_1280x720.mov {,old/}STO_Trailer_1280x720.wmv
90bde186e4718a28fe58e08de6bda231 STO_Trailer_1280x720.mov
90bde186e4718a28fe58e08de6bda231 old/STO_Trailer_1280x720.mov
7eac239f57c27e1c974ceac64e6faf36 STO_Trailer_1280x720.wmv
7eac239f57c27e1c974ceac64e6faf36 old/STO_Trailer_1280x720.wmv

The files I tried earlier and the fully downloaded new files are the same. :( Good idea, though!

During the video, my CPU usage reaches 40%, at most, so this is not a CPU issue, my memory usage is at 20%, so that's not it either.

I found this information from MPlayer, and using the -ni switch helped, but the video was still jumpy:
Too many video packets in the buffer: (236 in 8397310 bytes).
Maybe you are playing a non-interleaved stream/file or the codec failed?
For AVI files, try to force non-interleaved mode with the -ni option.

Then I saw this:

Requested video codec family [wmv9dmo] (vfm=dmo) not available.
Enable it at compilation.
Requested video codec family [wmvdmo] (vfm=dmo) not available.
Enable it at compilation.
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
[wmv3 @ 0xf3f3a0]Extra data: 8 bits left, value: 0
Selected video codec: [ffwmv3] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg M$ WMV3/WMV9)

So, at least in Linux, I do not have the latest and greatest codec, but why would it still be failing with Windows Media Player in Windows? WMP does not ask me to grab a codec and does not complain about anything.

Thanks everyone for their help, this isn't a huge issue as I've seen the 640x360 versions just fine, and since others can watch them, there must be something about my computers (in all their media players, OS', and hardware specs ;)) that is causing them to not play (perhaps I have the right codec type, but too old of a version; I only have what came with Windows Media Player 9 on Windows XP Professional).

Yeah that ****ed me off the first time I didn't watch the download and then I'm like "oh it's done!" and the movie wouldn't play. AHHHHH!! LMK if that was it.

About all i could suggest is update your codecs and try VLC media player. I've had problems with videos stuttering and pausing up but VLC seems to work fine when other players do this. It even bypasses all those annoying copyright warnings at the start of dvd's and starts them right at the menu.

Don't have VLC installed, but I'll try it. Usually plays less movies than MPlayer or XINE (for some reason it cannot seem to find the codecs I installed which MPlayer and XINE find without problems), but that was years ago, perhaps it's improved. ;)

I have shown it's not the hardware, it's not the OS, and it's not the media player throughout this thread. The problem, most likely and as others have pointed out, is outdated codecs. I have not, nor will I, be trying newer ones. Your, and most of the others', machines probably have newer codecs, which is why they seem to work.

ok now that i know your not usingvista it ...have you tried playing movies in that resolution before ...if the same has happened before it may very well be your graphics card drivers "being played in that resolution" it maybe just that your using media player 9 and it when it was made it wasnt designed to run on that resolution becuase back when the program was made it didnt exist ...theres a version 11 out but that includes all that copy write stuff...which people dont like so they opt for vlc or that media player lite ...that i recommended it a good program it doesnt add codecs and ya dont have to install it ...it runs off the .exe file
