My question, and my hope...

Will there be a place for smaller ships?

Will you be effective if you want to play a defiant or a steamrunner or another smaller ship. Or is this game going to be along the lines of the "platemail effect" where you have to constantly get the biggest weapons, the toughest armor or you're just a victim?

i guess it would depend on the upgrades, and retro fit. as long as a ship stays up to date, its all in how you use it i guess.

I think that small ships should always have some chance against larger ships, in the first episode of voyager a Maquis raider disabled a large Cardassian warship with some clever tricks, and this should be do-able in the game.

I think it will all depend on if ships individually have a role to play. While I believe there should always be disparities between the equipment a new character has compared to the equipment an older one does, this would not in and of itself mean that "bigger is always better".

This is the hope, that they will all have a purpose.

The only real comparable games are EVE, and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Both games have a real place for smaller ships, tackler's, harrasement, and so forth. I just hope this is something that Cryptic keeps in mind. I would really hate to see the more end game content filled with Enterprise E's or whatever the top of the line ship becomes. It would just be unfortunate to not have the mix of all the cool ships, without those smaller vessels being simple victims or a detriment to their allies.

this is why i suggested classes to be ship based, so destroyer class ships like the defiant or teh akira have a place and its not just everyone in sovvy's etc.

This was a concern of mine as well.

In the webcast they said that when we gain ranks we will get bigger ships and bigger crews. Does this literally mean bigger ships eg going from a shuttle craft to a galaxy class, or does it mean a higher class of ship.

I for one want only one ship a defiant, which as you know is not a big ship and at its max only has a crew of about 40. Am i going to at a disadvantage because i want to keep my small ship??

Then again even though i am small i will kick anyones butt :)

yeah this is also a worry of mine.

if i want to fly around in a Nova then if i get into a fight with a Intrepid class (for example) i would actually want to stand a chance against it instead of being one-hit-shotted because of the sheer size comparison between the two ships and we all know that the Nova can go toe-to-toe against an Intrepid
