One thing that was never asked. I wonder if we only get one character slot or will we get more character slots. If we all start out as captains you really dont have classes that we know of. I just wonder how many slots they will let us have. What do you guys think?

I imagine we'll get at least three to start with. And, while we don't have classes, he said that our character backgrounds will have an effect on gameplay.

It will be more than 1, and less than 10.

So the number of character slots is unknown. :(
I guess we will have to wait.

42 but 42 is too few for the word count, so these extra words have been brought to you by the number 42.
I would hazard that 4-8 is almost perfect, but I've been known to be wrong.

Yep, the number is unknown. I'm sure they're saving that for a nice little devlog. :)

Well at least one for each different division would be nice (5)

i say its to early to tell since we do not know how the gameplay is going to be. In guildwars there was no point to having more than 1 worrior because that worrior could get all the skills in the game, having 2 is just a waste of time. In CoX you can make many tankers and non of them have any of the same skills.

Well I know one thing.
I don't want to be forced into only having a Vulcan, or Klingon. I would hope that the attributes of each race are different enough that having multiple characters is going to add a lot more long term playability.
OT: IS there a poll for Cryptic to get a good idea how many people will be spending how much time online? I'm a little strapped and I'm worried that could tax.

Definitely a good question. I would guess that they would need to decide whether or not everyone is playing on one big server first though.

Well they chose to start with 8 on COH, although that may have been mandated by NCSoft at the time.
I think 8-10 is a good number to start with (assuming multiple servers). I'd also be interested in buying more slots as time goes on (if my other MMOs have been any indication.

It really depends on what the options are for characters. I know we get a number of species options, but if all Starfleet Captains play in a similar way, then there's no point in having many slots. On the other hand, if there are major differences between an Andorian scientist and a Vulcan diplomat, than we'll be needing lots of slots.

-I'm sure we'll find out! As for my preference, i will be content with whatever number they have but regardless of how many they include i will likely play my standard number of characters: 1 'main' and 1 'alt' no more, no less. Not for everyone, so i hope they include enough to expand the player base and future of the game...whatever number that may be.

Personaly i would like to see them have 1-3, anything more is just redundant, Wish there some way to lock the factions in so you cant have people switching toons to spy on the other side for sake of PvP, but then again a work around needs to be in place to prevent people from having multiple accounts to prevent that even further.
But what we'll probably see if 4-8 charachters as that is the norm these days, I am against being able to choose a seperate faction, but that would lead to people wanting multiple servers just for the sake of doing something different as well.

I dont know, but I think it would be somewhat pointless of having more than 4-5 slots. Ive played many mmos and I found that using 1 main and 2 alts was a bit too much. The third alt barely had any play time since I was stuck doing two different "jobs" anyhow.
However in STO, it would be interesting to be able to scout ahead and check out your surroundings with some crappy alt in a pvp zone before deciding to risk taking your main through there.
Having so many alts is also not very necessary if they arent going to be played. Just delete the alt you dont like to play and create a new one... no need for having 8 slots :)

I'm gonna say Ten. One for each department/ each faction

At ten characters though you can never play each of them enough to get them high enough so instead of a few really good characters you'll have a lot of decent ones
