Why, those were only from a possible future, which isnt set in stone, maybe in this timeline the tailor who designed those was killed in a freak boating accident.

Looks good.
But why is space so cloudy? Most space battles in the ST world took place with a jet black background unless they specifically chose a nebula to hide in.
Even with all the screenshots, it seems the artists can't leave the background alone ("we'll just put a happy little cloud right there!).

This looks awsome. Im just shocked at how great this game looks in such a short space of time.. pun intended..
I was very interested when Jack Emmert said the following in his interview with Associated Press, ''Everything that people will see on Sunday is going to be taken right from 'Star Trek Online' as it stands today, so hardened people should know that a release date might be closer than they think.''

I was very impressed with the trailer. It looked great both visually and from a gameplay standpoint. It was nice to see the bridge and know that ship interiors will be in the game. That adds a lot of authenticity to it. And it was nice to see the exploration/fighting aspect too. There can be something for everyone and even though the Federation is friendly it can still fight. And the Klingons killing the bridge crew was awesome. I can't wait for this game to release.

I agree, I am hoping there is something to be lost, at least shipwise. Playerwise I can understand it being kind of harmless, or a rez type of thing. But if you loose your ship there should be bigger consequences.

The presenter would not say except that it "won't be as long as you think".
He said that his PR people and his CEO would give him a hard time, but that he knows when the launch is.
Feel free to speculate wildly. My guess is they won't want to step on the toes of WOTLK or Champions Online, the
later of which is to launch next April.
We just watched this as a community with our shoutbox-chat running next to it. Unfortunately it was 22:30h for us when it aired and not as many as we expected were with us at our side, but all of us just stood there, translating words or sentences for our members with a weak english. But when the Trailer showed up during this Webcast we just freaked out and you could see the box get flooded with "Yeah, a bridge!" - "Awsome graphics!" - "Can't wait to play!" and stuff like that. You did it, Cryptic, you now have your own bunch of followers! Very nice work, we couldn't believe it when you said: "All ingame, no editing", unbelievable!

Really enjoyed the trailer. The space exploration should be enjoyable and the combat looks authentic Star Trek. As for the release date everyone has been referencing, don't forget the contest stated that it was for the game when it ships in approximately one year so. That would be perfect with CO coming in the spring then STO in the fall. Someone else mentioned the uniforms and not liking the idea of them being Voyager style uniforms. I wouldn't worry to much. I'm thinking you will be able to choose what you want your uniform to look like (at least within certain limits ) since they are going to be big on the customization aspect.
Now my quick analysis of the trailer:
- Looks like a new class of ship, kind of a mix between the 1701A and the 1701E Enterprise
- I saw a galaxy class ship and what looked like a city on top of a space station. Makes me wonder how big the space stations will be
- I actually liked the uniforms shown. Modern but still Starfleet traditional
- Someone mentioned earlier in the thread about why Klingons are attacking Starfleet. If you watch the video, they never show the faces of the characters that look like Klingons from the back. They could be another race we don't know about yet.
- From the trailer, I would say the Borg are going to be a big part of the storyline when the game launches. I really enjoy the Borg but I'm kind of surprised they aren't going to use a new species as the main antagonist.
All in all, a great trailer. I can't wait to see more!

Trailer looked pretty good, but they have plenty to do in the art department before this game goes live, if it is to be of interest to most Trek fans.
#1: Graphics looked sub-par, especiailly on the planet-side graphics. Space-graphics looked okay, but nothing spectacular. Eve Online has superior space graphics, and it's run on a single server, much like Jack Emmert said he wishes STO to be. I for one hope the graphics gets an upgrade before it goes live.
#2: Some of the ships seen looked pretty good, but the NX01/Sovvy wannabe needs to go. It had a mixture of NX01 and Sovvy nacelles, and a weird "pod" thingy between it's two nacelles. Just the look of the nacelles indicates to me that the game has the potential to "go where so many other Trek games have gone before"... straight in the trash.
#3: Gameplay-wise from what little we actually saw, has its potentials. Much more would need to be revealed for me to be truly interested in this MMO.
#4: They said the game is set in the year 2409. We have at least 3 separate Trek episodes which clearly indicates what the look of Starfleet will be around this time, at least when it comes to uniform design. The TNG/VOY-style uniforms from the trailer, is NOT what is suppose to be in use according to canon. Designers should have a look at TNG's "All Good Things", DS9's "The Visitor" and VOY's "Endgame". All take place around the year of 2404, merely 5 years pre-STO.
In conclusion: The game certainly has potential... but it is far from being "LIVE-worthy" to live up to standards required by most gamers today. I will not buy this game simply because it has the label "Star Trek" on the title. Cryptic needs to prove alot more for this game before I make my decision.

Well...needless to say the graphics will be polished and overhauled ALOT before Beta even opens let alone going live, it's the nature of development :) I would say that having game play like that is quite a promising sign at this stage! ...but...comparing a EARLY gameplay mock-up to a game thats been developed, released and has had years of polish and an entirely new engine and look tacked onto it like EVE has is hardly a fair comparison. (Before they upgraded the look of EVE I always thought the games ships and stations looked rather bad compared to the look of space) Writing off or condemning something at this stage isn't giving the game a chance at all.
I would think that after watching the pod cast, if they deliver half the things they said they were going to do with the game then I think STO will be the game alot of folks are looking for and not another twitch grindfest like many had feared it would be, I know I feel alot better right now! Personally I think a hats off to Cryptic for putting things together like they are at this early stage is in order. Can't wait to see how it comes along in the following year/ years :P and hopefully we get all the things that they would like to bring us :D

I agree in that shooting holes into what Cryptic has shown us at the present moment in time would be counter productive. Things will be polished before it is released out into the open world.
I also must agree and say well done to Cryptic for what they've accomplished so far in the development process. I am amazed by what they have done in the time they have had up to this point. Nothing to sneeze at friends. I'm looking forward to seeing what else is in store for STO.
I still get goosebumps/chill down the spine feeling plus a smile every time I watch the trailer. :)

That "pod" thingy is what's known as a weapons pod. A good example of it in action is in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Edit: Looking at it again, it may also be a fifth implulse engine as well (it has four of them on the saucer section, a pair on each side of the back).
There is time yet for development of the game, this is merely how it looks at this given time.
Since this is generally accepted by the developers to not be taken canonically (TV shows and movies are one thing, but novels and computer/console games are another), it's not such a big deal if they don't follow exactly what is shown. And there's plenty variation between the uniforms shown in the 'future' episodes, to allow differences anyways.

Two opinions...
First, exterior/space graphics look great.
Second, interior graphics, okay but lacking. I know with time these will be polished, but I'll throw my two cents in and hope that uniforms completely overhauled. Hire the designers of the Perpetual uniforms.

The Perpetual costumes, errr, uniforms were too clunky. Very '90's comic book hero, with all those accessories, straps and so on.
The ones shown are a combination of the different uniforms, but with some noticiable differences.
Golden (Engineering) and red (command) uniforms have are mostly grey with the appropriate colour for the shoulders, and black collars. The blue (science) uniform is mostly blue with black shoulders. Fasinating. Then there's the guy with mostly grey with black shoulders.... Is that guy a member of the Security (possibly Marine) branch?

Klingons vs. Federation.
Considering the past history of the two galactic powers, here's my theory:
The Federation's ready to expand, thanks to the transwarp conduit technology. The Klingons are worried that this will leave their Empire to stagnate, and possibly die while the Federation picks up the pieces. Maybe the Federation offers to share the technology if the Klingons become members of the Federation.
I wouldn't doubt that the Klingons demanded to use the transwarp technology so they could expand their empire. When the Federation refused, the Klingons broke off from their truce and sought to rip it from the hands of their former allies. After all, they both have their ideas of how to expand and the Klingons aren't exactly the type to not seize any opportunity that they they can find to test their warrior mettle and lay claim to the galaxy.

Wow.
I must admit that is a very logical and possibility. It makes sense to me. :)

I hope not, it's possible, it looks like STO's main PvP avenue, I wonder what Nimoy said about that having been such a large part of Trek 6's story. Making peace with the Klingons was a monumental victory for Galactic peace, and in it's own reflection on earth, the end of the cold war and the wall coming down. :(

A most enjoyable preview trailer, and a pretty good presentation, down to earth detailed info on what's coming. Thank you for your honesty Cryptic and not giving us the usual bells and whistles. This license has had more than it's share.
Also thank you for keeping the basic gameplay focused around the player but with great potential for teamwork.
Thank you also for understanding that we don't all have 30hrs a week to spend on these games even though we would like to sometimes.
And above all else... THANK YOU FOR UNLEASHING THE KLINGON EMPIRE!!!
Soon it will return to its Glory days of conquest and Honor. Qa'Pla!!!

Just downloaded and watched the Movie , and um this is a very sad day :( ... Where I was looking forward to this game. Based on the video , now I am not.
The Graphics are Sub Par compared to other Space related games such as Eve Online and even E&B.
E&B graphics are actually on par with this , and Eve Online blow these graphics out of the water with a much sharper and cleaner look.
I'm really dissappointed , having been looking forward to this for a while , and having played most of the SCI FI MMO's (Anarchy Online, Eve Online, Earth and Beyond) , this is a huge let down.
With Age of Conan , Requiem and other Extremely High Quality Graphics (Sharp, Clean, Sophisticated) MMO's just coming out, and not to mention what will be possible within the next year... to see something that reminds me of a Sub Par Saturday morning cartoon for STO is just extremely sad.

Overall:
GREAT to finally see this come to life and the scope of the game looks immense so Kudos to Cryptic for having the guts to go for it... really excited.
--------------------------------------------
GAMEPLAY:
Massive game, tons of game play mechanics to work out, a lot of balancing and systems to deal with... hard to tell from the footage how that's all going to work out BUT... if I can be a Klingon and kick the crap out of the Federation that might be all I need! ;)
VISUALS:
Overall:
I thought it was a polished dev demo... not a polished shipped game demo. To me it looks like the lighting model needs work. I didn't see any dynamic shadows in space, no real bloom anywhere, no player / AI shadows etc. I'm not sure if these things will be implemented but to me... space and the ships / planets in it looked a little flat at this point.
Ships:
Loved the variation of ships and can't wait to see more. I agree with those who have said some of the ships may have come across looking strange because of user customization. Can't wait to see what the possibilities there are. Again a better lighting model will help bring out the scale and detail of the designs. Warp looked nice and the impulse engine trail was nice as well.
Space:
I was a little underwhelmed BUT... again, dev art. A lot of people have been comparing the look to EVE and I think that's fair.. .in that... it's not there yet. Space felt really disjointed to me. A lot of elements, a lot of colour and asteroid belts but you could FEEL the separation of the parts, the whole didn't come together for me. At times I could almost see the geometry that was being used to encapsulate the elements.
Polish and lighting will take care of all of that down the road I'm sure.
Ship Interiors:
Disappointing, felt like Play-Station one level graphics. Now.. I can certainly understand trying to make these as simple and quickly as possible. A game this massive and assets cost / production hit ads up very quickly. BUT... again the lighting left a lot to be desired and the actual sets / LCAR execution felt the farthest away from ship-able quality for me.
STILL... I have faith. The work this team has done on their other projects leads me to believe they'll work it out...
Ground / planet surface / sets:
Maybe even more disappointing than the interiors for me. They felt rushed, not thought out and thrown together... all trademarks of dev art. Once the missions and locals become more set and the visual style and lighting models come together I can image these environments being amazing.
I'm not worried at all really....
Special FX:
Lacking really... the engines and warp stood out for me but only in a crowd of average FX elements. The phasers / weaponry, explosions etc. all seem to need much more work both visually and timing wise.
That being said I know FX get tweaked throughout the projects life cycle so I look for massive improvements in this area as the game gets tightened up.
Characters / uniforms:
Animation felt stiff and I didn't see any facial motion at all. I'm assuming there will be much more done here... As for the uniforms they looked standard issue. Nothing spectacular or controversial. My biggest question here is how will they handle player customization and how will leveling / rank / experience be visualized on the player? Certainly when I was with Perpetual that was the 1st issue we tackled. The uniform is a very iconic element in Star Trek (maybe THE most iconic visual next to the Enterprise itself) and modifying it is difficult. Our solution was for department based specialization (more that just colour) and a uniform based ranking system (instead of the collar pins). The equipment that could be added was all department specific and could be gained via experience and leveling. Our biggest concern was that how will MY character stand out in a world where uniformity rules? The above was our "solution".
It'll be interesting to see what Cryptic does here... or if their game-play mechanic even deems it necessary to have that level of customization. If anyone can figure it out, in regards to player customization, it will be Cryptic. I'm excited to see what they come up with.
--------------------------------------------
As I said... this was a development Demo and most of my issues are somewhat tempered because of the stage of production they're at. All I know is that if they are 2 - 3 years away and they're this far along already that I'm really interested to see how the game will look once all of the layers of iteration and polish have been added.
Really great stuff!
Congrats to the entire Cryptic team for pulling this off at this stage...

Although the new uniforms are non canon, (they should be the ones from "Endgame"), I really like them.

I love the new Starfleet uniforms that are being used in STO. They match what has always been seen on screen, a standard uniform for all Starfleet personnel with a color variation depending on the department the individual is in (Command (Red), Operations (Gold), Sciences (Blue))
I look the ships that were shown and the game looks pretty good from what was seen in the first trailer. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
As for why the Klingon invaders are using Starfleet weapons could be that Cryptic hasn't designed Klingon weapons yet or, since they are aboard a Starfleet vessel, it's possible the Klingons stole weapons out of one of the weapons lockers onboard.
I can't wait for this game to come out and immerse myself in the Star Trek universe.

I find this forum quite amusing. First this is all a demo, nothing near the final product. It is absurd to base your judgments on a few seconds of develpment footage.
second... all you people out there bashing the way it looks and how the gfx aren't up to par... Are you the same people who are gonna whine when they revamp the graphics for high quality and you have to have a $400-$600 gfx card in order to play it in its full glory? You cant have leading edge graphics and play it on 2-3 year old hardware. It just doesn't work that way. Since everyone is giving their opinion, I will give mine.. Because the game is a few years away, the minimum requirements should be the top end equipment at the present time.
but wait a sec, I bet half the people would even be upset about that in a year or so...
Cryptic.... It looks great, THANK YOU FOR EVEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE THIS GAME
we should all thank them for even trying it

For a game in this stage of development, I am taken back with this trailer.
As I listened to Emmert speak, I get the feeling this is a man that doesn't want to disappoint the fans. Clearly, at some point we're all driven by $$, but I didn't feel as thought that was his only motive behind developing this game. I guess it's hard to be selfish when working with such a pure genre like Star Trek.
If this is just the beginning of what we're going to see then I can't wait for a few years to go by when I look back at today and say to myself, "WooOoow... at some point the game was just ABC... today, it's XYZ!"
I'll say, I'm a fairly new Star Trek fan... I don't know much about graviton pulses and tetryon radiation, but I have played my fair share of games... and so far, I'm impressed with what they've done thus far.
I'm REALLY looking forward to this!
Awesome. Need this game... now! I guess CO will tide me over, though. :p

I'm sure some people may fall into this Category , however, as things currently stand the Nvidia 8800 does not. Nor does 4 gigs of Ram and appropriate Processor speed to go with it.
For the amount of time that STO has been in development PE or Otherwise, the demo lacked a single WOW factor that made me say "Other than because I'm a Trekkie, I want to play this game" ... Only dev time will tell , but for now it was bit lackluster.

Niiiiiiice.
Though things like charactrer models (and ship models as well after seeing that close-in on the Vor'cha) could use more work. All of SFX could, for that matter. Really, it's not 2005 and the game is not called WoW: people do have more powerful gears now.

Oh ya , and just a quick reminder from the OP post:
This is 100 percent in-engine gameplay footage. What you see is what you'll play!
100% in game engine ... if that is the current in game engine , and what people can expect to play , then any Negative comments that have been posted here , have just as much validity as the rest of the positive feedback , because game graphics are based around the Game Engine, if you have any doubts about this .... Everquest .... Nuff said.

Well, it looks like it's going to be even more kick-ass than perpetual's game. Unfourtunately...the graphics are worse than World of Warcraft. The animations are shittier than the original Halo.
Dude. This is what I expected the original STO to look like: http://www.fl-tw.com
Hell...come on man, I know graphics aren't anything but COME ON. There's a point where I just need a little bit of new, high end stuff.
Oh well. I'm not terribly excited by this anymore. You're not exactly gonna get the same 'WOW' factor you would get with something like Infinity when you suddenly warp into a planet and see something totally new for the first time.
Oh well... :(. I'm not that excited anymore. It's like playing a slightly upgraded version of Frontier...which isn't bad, but...
Anyways, for an example of what can be done today on a low end computer, look at Crysis. Actually, look at Crysis Warhead, running maxxed out on a $600 computer. By the time STO comes out, the least everyone would have would be a gfx card the equivilant of an 8800 GTO (crappier version of an 8800 gt) and a Q6600. Hell, even an E6600 runs crysis awesome.
If they want the gfx lower for a much wider audience (china? lol), then there's obviously assets already produced for the ultra low end...

1 random dude from europe built that engine in 3 years.
Cryptic is a AAA studio with a few games behind their belt. I'm expecting them to beat that one random dude working with no pay on his own with a full time job!

Unfortunately that random dude has talent, Real talent. That is extremely hard to come by in the AAA gaming industry. Maybe they should get him the work on star trek online. LOL the first time I looked at infinity I said, " holy *$#% that's exactly what STO should be like." But then I saw the fact that there is no PS I (or any ship interiors for that matter) that they have planned for that game. But then I guess infinity is an entirely different game. And is also based on a procedural engine that randomly generates their universe. That would be rather difficult with star trek online as a lot of the content already exists and is hard to randomly generate.
And just so you know there is alot of little gaming nerds out there, who sit and make games for fun that make the AAA gaming companies look like second rate programmers. Then the only time the AAA Company manages to make a good game is when they actually have one of these little gaming nerds working for them.
But of course don't listen to me I'm just an idiot who doesn't know what he's talking about. I'm just happy that were actually getting a MMO. Because I can guarantee cryptic will finish this game. There's no guaranteed on how long it will be out and running. But I will enjoy it for as long as we have it.

Cryptic should hire both the creator behind Infinity and the creator behind NanoFX GE. Both of which have plenty of talent and both have been able to create really awesome looking graphics content, on their sparetime. NanoFX GE has graphics which are at least on-par with Eve Online, so I fully expect a AAA-company like Cryptic to be able to atleast match these guys graphics, and then some.

Hi to all.
I was watching the livestream yesterday and downloaded the trailer of sto, but after all I'm not very happy with the actual state of the game.
I came with huge expectations, but unfortunatly they aren't fullfilled...
The whole game looks to cute... to much colors ... there is no cool style in the graphics I saw till now.
What happen to the very stylish concept-drawings and ingame-tests?
(e.g. http://www.kill-more-people.de/images/games/star_trek/StarTrekOnline_scr2.jpg or http://www.kill-more-people.de/images/games/star_trek/StarTrekOnline_scr1.jpg)
I mean - ok... there might be restrictions to the game because of the hardware of the gamers, but this is no reason to create a lolipop-game...
I like some in-game screens... e.g. the intro-sequence of the trailer and the asteroid-field...
but the battles look like some kind of a star trek armada adaptaion and the planets feel like the land of the teletubbies...
Well ... of course... the gameplay is very important ... but for me, the style and graphic is too...
I like star trek because of the breathtaking shots of starships and battles ...
there was no feeling like this for me, watching the trailer :(

What are your thoughts on the uniforms that we saw a glimpse of? I noticed how the rank pips were large to make it easier to determine rank from distance I suppose. Seems like a step in between the First Contact era uniforms and the traditional "future" uniforms we saw in All Good Things & Endgame.
Speaking of, Endgame was set in the year 2404 by which time the Federation had adopted the new style uniforms. How come the characters aren't wearing them?

As far as the different looks go...I think everyone should remember that the game takes place 30 years after Nemesis and later than any of the future time line episodes took place (and even in those episodes the time line was usually altered, especially in All good things. There's been ample time for the federation to institute new uniforms, rank pips and what not. Personally I think it was a good idea to put the game in this time period because it would allow for changes like this (some which might be needed for game play reasons..like noticeable pips) as well as opening up all kinds of avenues for events and storylines which are not restricted by already established events (ie: SWG being perpetually stranded in the events after a new hope...and never able to really move out of that)
I mean the uniforms in the Trek shows often changed in look from movie to movie, season to season (traditional uniforms, to all black with colored shoulders, to black and grey with colored shirt beneath and so on...I still like TOS'S uniforms from the movies to be honest :P ) So really it shouldn't be a big surprise....and I think it's a pretty acceptable thing to do, and the changes are subtle enough to not be unreasonable.

First I would like to say for an alpha build of the game and only 6 months work done to it, it looks pretty good. I do hope though it will pick up and graphically become as good as Eve online for example.
Strahod: The game has only been in development for 6 months and probably wont be out for a minimum of 1 yr, so requirements, etc have not been thought about. I would suggest searching the forums for answers to the other questions.

maybe its just me but I'm getting tired of hearing all the complaining. No mmo is ever goign to live up to everyones standards, but for once why can't the trek community stop bickering over banal things like uniforms and graphics and finally embrace the fact that a 25 yr old liscence is getting new life, a new move and a virtual world the likes of which we as gamers and fans could be proud of. I've tinkered with basically everry trek game there ever was, and can understand the pessimistic attitude after seen so many devs turn the liscence into a joke. But, cryptic is taking this seriously and maybe its about time the hardcore fan boys just stop nit picking and join the excitemnt for once.

I think people are being overly critical about the graphics in the new video.
Seriously, cryptic has had the IP for months, not years.
Frankly, they could be better, but I was actually quite impressed and pleased with the graphics and general outlook for the game so far.
Which the new video left me quite excited for more.
I want more!
STO's graphics won't have to be perfect, and the game/graphics engine can always been upgraded down the road; like EVE did w/ Trinity.
I hope people with be more optimistic; what the heck is graphics anyway w/out awesome game play.
The graphics looks awesome, lets move on; imo.

I had a geek moment from watching that trailer :)
Firstly great stuff in the video demo:)
Now to see if any questions where answered?
Okay so we all start at a low officer rank and command our our ship. Not at the Captain rank.
progress through the game, players can increase in rank and gain larger vessels and more crew
Does this crew act like pets in other MMOs?
-Yes
Does leading a crew mean you can only have a Command career? As in you can't be a medical or science, etc career?
-No. Every player will have a specialy like medician or security, etc.
Will there be no classes, save for maybe crew members?
-Specialies not classes from the sound of it.
Is it just me or does this sound like Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, to anyone else, being that you lead a crew and not just one player character at a time? This is not a bad thing IMO I like this idea a lot.
what do you all think? was Cryptic inspired by PE's other canceled game?
From the video iI can see about STO from the Q and A video:
STO will be out after April '09 and less then 3 years.
Ships blow up, not sure if those are player or NPC ships though.
Starfleet is more ranged focus versus IKD's melee, but they both use ranged combat.
Holographic crew?! yes, but limited play, like maybe just on the bridge.
Holodecks FTW!
Perma death with cridet charges!? lol jk;) the death system woundn't be harsh to players.
Hand drawn animation.
No grind fest? it will be fun at least.
Dynamic events, players action effect the galaxy it seems.
Starfleet versus IDK (Klingons)
Team-ups with iother players a must for some missions.
Specialties are like jobs/classes.
Combat not like other MMOs and space combat is strategic.
They what one large server for everyone to play.
You can go on ither peoples ships, but not a game play element.
Not a level based MMORPG?!

I 've got a megaton of questions also!!! Will there be a first person third person switch? Will we be able to pick up and use weapons, sensor equipment , etc...? Can we help with creating and molding new lifeforms? The initial trailer looks great at high res., It would be great to approach a station on ship and have the control panel come up!!!

I'm not going to lie, I'm not loving what I saw in this trailer - but I saw from the webcast that this isn't necessarily going to be a project about fancy graphics but more about the functionality required for an authentic Star Trek, online experience, which I think may turn out to be a success - in all the other games we're limited as to what we can do but we are visually amazed (sometimes ;)) - but that gets boring after a while.
Having said that, this is early days and I'm sure the end result will be one which is of a good standard - having seen other works.
What I do love about the STO team is that you actually seem to be Trek fans, rather than generic game developers - that should see to the canon side of things (w00t!) and deliver the best ST experience possible!
-Good luck Cryptic!-

Overall:
Characters / uniforms:
Animation felt stiff and I didn't see any facial motion at all. I'm assuming there will be much more done here...
:D
This is the part I am definitely worried about. I took a break from World of Warcraft to play City of Heroes/Villians and was really turned off by the wooden features. My characters didn't seem to have any personality at all. No facial expressions, nothing. It was like going back to Everquest. So when I heard that Cryptic was taking over the license, I had my doubts. Here's hoping that the wooden characters are because of early development and not just poor design quality/laziness, because I've been excited about this game since I first heard about it a couple years ago.

3. wow, this is actully pretty sweet.
4. taking screens from the trialer fort he guild, AWSOME!
i must say that taking screens from the vid and looking at them actully gives a better understanding of the grafic and made it look better.

Ok the trailer was amazing but PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! CHANGE THE UNIFORMS!!!! Not to complain a lot but the uniforms that P3 had designed were better looking. The ones you are thinking of using look HORRIBLE. I never liked the ones P3 designed either so i think the best way to go is to use the SAME uniform that they used in the last movies and ds9. I think the game looks awesome and i cant wait to kill klingons invading my bridge. LOL

What else can be said but "WOW!" One point though, I hope it is just a marketing thing that there was a lot of emphasis on battling - and that there will be plenty of true Star Trekesque gameplay...sans shoot-everyone up... I really hope I don't have to wait more than a year for this...
I agree. There was far too much emphasis on combat in this trailer for me. I realize that an early stage of the game is probably going to involve making sure combat works properly, but if there isn't an opportunity to actually use diplomacy in most situations, I will be very disappointed. A Star Trek shoot-em-up game with other people is still a Star Trek shoot-em-up game, and that's just not true to the spirit of Star Trek.

*all tingly with a big @$$3d grin*
and only 3 micro nitpicks
1: Klingon disruptors do not sound like starfleet phasers
2: gotta get rid of lense flare. after all, you don't see it IRL, do you? unless you have a camera lens glued to your face. wait, that's the borg so maybe you would
3: the graphics are really great, but too cartoony/comicbook like. could be toned down a bit

I really want the uniforms from First Contact / DS9.....The ones they showed look HORRIBLE. Maybe they will let users pick their uniform (like different eras uniforms).....its gonna be a carnival of Starfleet uniforms but ohh well....my crew will be the only one in the whole Federation to look decent. :D

Well I will say this about the uniforms. I appreciate the argument that this is a different time frame where we could see a shift in uniform style, but we've seen in three different occasions in "canon" ("All Good Things" "Timeless" & "Endgame") the future style uniforms from this time frame. Everyone can argue that there were from altered futures... and that much is true, however, those are from three vastly different futures yet they all had the same uniform style. When we think this time period, it's those future style uniforms. So should they re-create some new uniforms for the sake of changing it? I don't think so. To me it's a copout that pulls from the realism of the game. In the future, are future Trek developers going to look at this game as providing it's own sort of canon? Or just making changes where it wanted to for the hell of it? I think there's some amount of respect for what's been established that just can't be overlooked. Thoughts? Or am I aimlessly ranting? haha :D

The uniforms are my favourite part of what we've seen so far. Slick, sharp, practical -- certainly more Starfleet than one-piece jumpsuits, and the white collars/cuffs seem like the perfect addition. I'm really fond of them.
Well, it looks like it's going to be even more kick-ass than perpetual's game. Unfourtunately...the graphics are worse than World of Warcraft. I wouldn't go that far, but I essentially agree.
In space, it is possible to do so much better, even with a very low system requirement target. Point in case: EVE. Dense planetary environments are another matter, but I expected better of space.
Then again, I suppose it would feel very strange if objects in space looked much better than everything else. Hm.

Jordan i agree with your point of view. No matter what timeline seems like Starfleet will eventually adopt the uniform weve seen in eps like timeless and endgame......tho i must say that i really dont like those uniforms and com badge.....to me they are horrible and i was JUST so glad they were from futures that were distorted. ALSO remember in timeless how we saw Captain laforge wearing the uniform from first contact BUT with the combadge of end game!? so i think it is plausable to have the first contact uniform on the game. what you think??

LOL Agreed Mr Tuvok. Im already planning to get my own Intrepid class starship and name it Voyager NCC 74656-F hahaha Intrepid is the best ship of the fleet....sovering class? give me a break!! hahaha
No but i really wish they make TONS of Voy stuff.......like missions to recue tuvok ( He will still be alive 30 years after nemesis.....) or idk what other cool stuff. I hope the make the intrepid class starship easy to acquire and upgrade...there are several improvements i already want for my Voyager lol.
Another thing....you think you will be able to control even the micro systems!?!? like the gravity plating on the ship. I ask cause ive always had this idea of augmenting the gravity plating of the decks when you are getting boarded....OR deactivating the life support systems (that will kill your crew tho..) but yeah. Im scared that klingos are gonna attack mer and board my beautiful Intrepid bridge so im already thinking how to kill them BEFORE they get there...well given they manage to board my ship

So will STO be 50%+ combat? The gameplay video shows basically nothing but fighting, probably not the best way to win over finicky ST fans considering ST was about 10-25% violence out of all its films and tv incarnations...I think I'd have rather seen a narrated gameplay video demoing non-combat systems.

I am generally looking forward to this game (though I would look forward to it even more if it was moddable - *hint-hint*), but I am so far unimpressed with the new designs presented in the trailer and screenshots. I haven't had the time to fully read through everything on the trailer, etc., so if they're only temporary, or still WIP, forgive me, but I feel that this image (http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k296/iammetwo/Misc/i_has_a_sovren.jpg), which a friend put together based on my comments on another forum, sums up my opinions on the new ships pretty well.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean any offense to the developers or the modelers or the artists who created the design, it's just that tweaking an existing design, slapping on a bunch of greebles and widgets, and throwing in a couple fins and a spoiler does not equal a good starship design. Far be it for me to presume that my humble opinion holds any weight, but I would strongly urge the developers to scrap that design concept all together, and create something original, or at least something that comes somewhere close to being streamlined, and I fervently hope that, through my influence or not, that comes to pass.

I must say, after playing CoH for close to 4 years, I grew to not exactly like the way Jack Emmert does things. But after watching the video and him answering questions, I actually think he is the perfect man for the job.
Also, Craig was it? You nerf my characters and I will personally send you a rotten egg! Haha, j/k.
Really looking forward to the release of this game. Glad Jack is on the job.

Don't wanna knock the game play footage but it's kinda cartoonish. CoH engine? I really was hoping for more realistic looking gameplay. I understand the having it play on "regular" computers, so i hope the immersion and gameplay make up.
Stormnet
08-13-2008, 03:42 AM
Well if they want to make it for all computers (Or a vast majority of them) cartoony is what your going to get. But looking at the trailer, it looks great. As much as realism is pretty cool in a game, it's still a game and I don't mind cartoony to be honest. Mechanics and Gameplay are much more important.

I can't belive anyone is complaining about graphics and uniforms it all looks amazing you fellas at Cryptic have done fantastic job. The uniforms look great, sort of a throw back to the Orginal series with a modern touch love them. And i love the general style of the game very colourful which is very star trek for me again another throw back to the Orignal series. The ships look awesome, they look like the old ships but more heaverley armoured which is the way the federation was heading up to and after Nemisis. Roll on release date or beta testing. Look forward to seeing all Trek fans out there, unless your Klingon.
