I really do want to have to search half the galaxy for "Trylitium Warp Core + 10 power" or some other random thing that gets attached to your ship to improve stats.
All ships should have a stock layout, and only limited by captain rank. I think items will muddy the differences between ships and their unqiueness and difficult to balance. also it will encourage the pvp a race to the best items.
If you want differences between ships, make it officers/crew skills abilities (crew gains XP/ levels and preform better), as crew tend to vulnerable especially those red shirts.
