STO is using the Cryptic engine. We haven't seen it in action yet, since this and Champions Online will be the first games to use it.

That... is the name. The Cryptic engine.

It is not the same engine used by CoH/CoV. It is new.

A Quantum Slipstream engine, with warp- and character customization capabilities the Federation has heretofore only ever dreamed of.

This was posted on Nvidia's site, specifically dealing with CoH:

The proprietary Cryptic engine used in City of Heroes is at the forefront of next generation graphics technology. The game engine takes full advantage of the GeForce4 chipset through extensive use of vertex and pixel shaders. Cityscapes are composed of millions of triangles and character models are skinned, bump-mapped, and animated using vertex and pixel shaders. Progressive detail layering and high-resolution anti-aliasing combine to immerse you in the super hero universe.

Dammit! I wish I had thought of that first.

Its their proprietary next generation game engine, for their new stable of games (theyve got at least one more in the works besides CO and STO) It is not the CoX engine. Like all game engines its flexible, and can accomodate different looks and outputs.

Last I heard Cryptic uses the Hero Engine (http://www.heroengine.com/) (there's a video of hoe the engine is used by the devs to make a world environment, too. Unless Cryptic has changed/update to a different engine for ST:O I supect the information at the link will show you what it's able to do.

Some media sites got the chance to play Champions Online recently and were very impressed with how it played, however we shouldn't expect it to play the same way for STO.

Oh, I know, I was just posting that so we'd have a frame of reference. (I should've said that though.) :)

They built their own in-house engine.

New engine, CoH uses their old game engine.

I'd assume that it's been improved, similar to the constant updates to the Unreal engine.

I don't know how anyone can get more clear. Brand new. We've never played anything using it, no. As Dart said, this and CO will be the first games using it.

However, we do know it was specifically designed to address many of the shortcomings of the CoH/CoV engine, including hardcoded abilities and VFX, among other things that were ongoing limitation problems in CoH, and we know that it has been designed to expand customization options many times over from what CoH allows, is expandably into the future as graphics detai needs change, and is in general pretty flexible and robust.

However, it's worth noting that engines, when written well, have very LITTLE bearing on how a game looks and plays. It's simply a flexible foundation on which the games are built.

Incorrect. Cryptic has never used the Hero Engine. You're confusing it with the HERO System, by Hero Games (http://www.herogames.com/home.htm), which is the tabletop RPG system that the Champions tabletop RPG was designed on.

Well, youre right, unfortunately. Some people are not well informed. Heres the deal from Cryptics website:

Cryptic utilizes a proprietary MMO engine that contains all the tools needed to efficiently build and operate massive online games. Developed in house, the engine continues to be upgraded and adjusted by its original creators to improve the engine's versatility and functionality. In addition, Efficient content generation tools have been incorporated to streamline the development process, allowing real time testing of art assets within the game environment.

Its their own engine. They made it. It is the next generation of their engine , designed to power their new line of games , of which CO and STO are only two. They may have at least one more in some stage of development.

No 'may' about it-- they've said officially before that the engine is being used on CO and two(at the time) unannounced titles. One of those was clearly STO. I'm holding out hope that the other one is going to be GSaW Online. :D

Actually, I think It's a Warmachine (Privateer Press Steampunk Minis game) game, and have built a case to support my theory:

Don't care, still holding out hope it's GSaW (which, for the uninitiated, would be a reference to the concept art on the Cryptic Website of-- say it with me-- A Girl Shooting At Wolves).

I know said game is on their list, in whatever form it actually exists, so it's likely coming eventually. I just love the concepts behind the concept art.

In support of Cyjack's WarMachine theory, I have created an image for comparison.

Cryptic art is the right side - Warmachine on the left

I'd say he is either correct, or there was, at least, an obvious inspirational source... :D
