I watched the test video and it ran fine except for the colors being completely wrong (it was mostly a "pulsing" orange and neon green blob). I could make out the Star Trek Online logo, too.

Probably has something to do with the fact I'm using a (censored) laptop and the even more (censored) integrated graphics and shared system memory. :mad:

Yer camera guy needs some help, he was struggling in the initial piece. Tell him to stop making cell phone calls while rolling, unless he's going to scrap the audio. Tell him to put some background music in his webcasts. Tell him to loosen the brakes on his tripod because it looks like he's fighting it, not using it. Tell to plan out his shots a little more before he shoots to keep from looking like "Uncle Jim with a handicam".

Yes, I am super critical. I apologize. I am a card carrying member of Local 600 (Motion Picture Camera Union) and bad camera work makes me crazy. For the Nimoy thing I would reccomend getting at least 2 cameras on sticks with an operator picking off wides, mediums, CUs. (If you cant get operators, set reasonable static shots and change them from time to time as you roam with a 3rd camera handheld)

That's a pretty cool way of doing it though. Only problem I foresee is that it might be hard to get people to work together for the benefit of the ship. Guess that's what guilds are for though.

Anyway even if I am from Europe, i can understand that creating global sweepstakes can be a legal nightmare.
Hopefully at some point there will be sweepstakes for other countries too. :D

Stragate Worlds also had a similar sweepstakes for beta positions, that was only available for USA residents. But it seems that the invites fro early closed beta aren't limited to USA residents alone. At least if their registration page is any indication of it. :D

Question: Will it be more guild/fleet-based? Or can solo players enjoy it as well?

I love WoW and play it fairly regularly (with my usual 2 or 3-month WoW breaks now and then) but one of my biggest problems is the hours I play -- I get home from work early in the morning, and there's not many people online. Meaning it's hard to find a group of guildies... or a pickup group to go do the higher level stuff.

So will STO have enough solo content to satisfy those of us working Capt. Jellico's 4th shift?

I must say, I'm quite impressed. They have the hype down very well at least, here's hoping they live up to it :)

I expect the game to be out in about 3 years. Wish it was sooner, but I sure as hell won't stop watching these forums anytime soon after THAT display (plus I'll be trying to get into beta >.> hehe).

Wonderful Webcast! I had just got up to speed on the fact that Cryptic had taken over the IP. A friend and I were both supremely dissapointed when we heard Perpetual was shutting down. So discovering this fact, this site, and watching the webcast made my "year".

There were just too many "highlights" to this webcast to go through in detail in just one post. Anyone who has not seen this really should watch it for themselves. Personally I'm simply delighted that this IP is being handled by intelligent, creative, experienced people. And I await it's release with baited breath... :)

I've got to say, I'm VERY impressed with what Cryptic are doing - great presentation and Q&A period. Kudos to you, Cryptic I think the IP is in the right hands and you guys are on the right track.

Things I loved:

-Some of the ships looked totally new, and awesome :D
-Hiring STAR TREK writer to assist with the game is a huge bonus :D
-The level of dedication to 'get it right' is obvious and impressive
-The CHANCE of it all being in 'One Universe/server'
-The fact that a person's 'career path/specialization' is taken into consideration and is part of being a Captain
-'Surprise Events' such as a sudden Borg invasion of a system, having to rally and fight them out
-Space combat looked very fun
-Ground combat looks like it could use some work, but I hope they're both more twitch gaming style rather than clicking icons
-You don't have to spend a bajillion hours playing to have fun/be competitive
-Exploration is going to be a big deal
-A whole lot more I won't bother going into, I'll just say hat's off to ya and I'm looking forward to learning a lot more :)

It's funny they showed the Borg as an event. I actually brought that up and was like "Wouldn't it be cool to see events as the Borg coming to kill Earth."

And then boom! THey show it!
