Is the game going to hold with original idea of what PE was hoping for, and having you work through the ranks and become captain and possibly recruite your crew. Or is this going to end up being EVE with Star Trek ships... aka, Star Fleet Battles?

I personally liked the PE idea. It was far more Trekki and less gamey.

Will there also be a FORCED naming system? Where you have to have a REAL name for a charecter/toon, not some stupid screen name thats so common in the MMO circles nowadays..... example Good Charecter name Lou Hodo, Bad (MMO common) Cpt 1337ph8zorz4tw or anything like that.

I dont personally care what ships are available at the start, or what races. I plan on only playing one race, and working towards a ship that fits that charecter. I understand what ROLE Playing is unlike many MMORPGers.. (Read WoW)

2nd: to answer your questions

yeha most of us here want to work our way through the ranks and such instead of becoming a captain from the word go but untill the 10th comes along this is all speculation

again no idea but its a mixed discussion as half of us want a naming convention to stop all the stupid names like "n00bkillaz" etc wheras the other half want to name their stuff freely

Personally, I would like it so that you have a character that you form, mold, and adapt to how you feel is necessary, so in essence a skill based system. But while I think EVE is a beautiful game, I hope that STO adds to that. For instance, starship interiors, I feel, is a must, interaction with both essential and non-essential systems should be at a high level, the ability to modify your vessel and name it to your whim and to what roles you want to accomplish. I want a game, that is complex, but simplistic, I want a game that is going to make me think, not point, aim, and fire, I want a challenge, and I want to be in the Trek Universe.

I agree, I really hope it's not all about battles, but I do want the chance to show of my ship's big guns every once in a while ;) The name problem( both player and ship) may be solved simply by either having a database of 1000s of names, or having the option of submitting a name to Cryptic for review. If it's okay, you can use it.

Thanks for the welcome and quick responces...

I would love to see just the cardnel ship names in the game at the start. This will give people things to work towards... Of course some ships will be taken, like the NCC-1701E and the Defiant. But nothing says that you cant command the Enterprises sister ship another Soverign class, or another Defiant class gunboat. (Even though it breaks every Rodenberry Rule.) I am opposed to the Defiant class all together personally.

I really hope they stick with the PE idea of building a charecter to command a ship. And keeping you inside the ship not 3rd person ship flight.. that would get mighty boreing. Or at least give the option so you can switch between charecter view and ship view.

My last wish for the game is to have the Nebula Class in the game... cause its the closes thing to the Saratoga, Relient class ship. And I dont plan on fighting much... it is after all Star Trek, not Star Wars.

From what I remember, cryptic bought the IP but not the code that PE created. Im fairly sure that cryptic started from scratch. So aside from some of the devs, im not sure what of PE we will find in the game.

Personally, I hope they ban idiot names on sight.

I'm tired of people forcing their wit on me with "IpwndURmom" or "Jiiz'dOnU" type of names. Get a grip, get some imagination. Try not to be a dork. It's not that hard to think of a "Trekky" type of name...

Too early to say.
Checking the main news page now and then will slowly tell you what is brewing at Cryptic.
And, of course, after the 10th we might know more.

Until then, you are free to enter the passionate debates about what STO you want :)

I hope their is no stupid names. I like the list idea with the option to request a custom name. But stupid ones should be banned.

I really really hope this game is more than just Trek Battles, though I happen to like the Defiant, but agree it not really what Gene's Star Trek would have had.

DS9 showed a bit more of the darker side of the ST Universe but it was still a great show. The Universe is a crazy place, and though it was never shown in TOS the romulan an klingon wars would have been brutal.

I do however agree that I dont just want to be battling, and this game be nothing more than a violent potrayal of Star Trek. (Which is not Star Trek) Many Star Trek games have gone this route, I hope this one does something different.

I have yet to really get into any MMOG. I played EVE, but once the free month was done, did not feel it was worth the monthly fee. Have no interest in WoW. Played SWG for about a year, but I couldnt get anywhere and found it difficult to meet and socialize with people. Then some guy would come kill me.

Star Trek Online however can be something totally different than EVE, WoW, and SWG. Its Star Trek, which has much much much more than just fighting and violence. I just hope Cryptic realizes this, and capatalizes on it.

For the naming problem I would like to see a database that you can choose from be it character or ship (more in favor of getting a ship assigned to you verses you getting to name it). If that is the case we should start up a Database from Cryptic to draw upon. Similar to the one we had over on the old PE board. I think we had quite a few approved back then.

This is a video game. Of course it's going to be combat dominated. I've never seen a good diplomacy game or a good engineering game. :p

Star Wars Galaxies in its prime; the problem there was the design arguably didn't fit with what the player base expected in a Star Wars title. Star Trek could be different. Engineering is obvious enough, but as for diplomacy...what about letting heads of guilds operate a Starbase, similar in spirit to Benjamin Sisko?

Cmdr Sisko didnt want that assignment at first. After all Turoknor (DS9) wasnt a ideal place for a cmdr who should be on a ship.... But he was damaged goods and was thinking of his son.

I loved DS9 it was my favorite of the star trek shows, but it definately had its problems when it came to meshing with the Roddenbery Standard. It was FAR darker than all the other star treks combined. It also was something none of the other star treks were, besides not on the Enterprise, it was a complete story, from begining of season 1 to the end of season 7. All the others were a group of short stories put together centered around 1 ship and its crew. DS9 actually had little to do with the station and more about the emissary aka Ben Sisko, and his relation to the Prophits. Everything else was "fluff" to feed to that point.

I am a trekki yes, but I am more of a B5 fan, both have there place with me... I often compair the two stories, seeing as B5 was accussed of stealing ideas from DS9 seeing as they were on at the same time. But I have watched all 7 seasons of DS9, and all 5 seasons of B5, and I can tell you. That when compared side by side, the acting in DS9 was better, but the writing in B5 was far more belivable. And thats what matters most to me.

Sorry got off on a tangent.
