I know PE said that ships couldnt be lost, but I think that was another poor PE idea. (of many)
I agree that it would suck to lose your ship, but that just gives you more incentive to protect it.
Being able to actually lose your ship would make for some interesting content.
You could pull a Star Trek 3 where kirk blows up his ship and takes over the bird of prey.
Or instead of fighting until your ship is completely crapped out, but you dont care cause you cant lose it.
You would be forcecd to retreat to repair, or just to save your ship and crew.
Escape pods could be fun too.
Say you abandon ship, and have to land on a plant. You would have to survive until rescue.
That would be interesting no?
Losing your ship should not be a common occurance, but I think if that risk is present, it makes for a dynamic in the game where you truly can lose something that you hold dear.
Not to say if you lose your ship you are totally screwed, the definat was lost and they replaced that in no time. Some times its not the captains fault if you lose the ship.
All in all, the loss of a ship would be horrible, but real.

I agree, having the possibility of your ship being destroyed makes every battle that much more meaningful can you imagine the adrenaline rush upon entering a large battle on the scale of "sacrifice of angels" however I believe your character should not be subject to perma-death in this case or any case for that matter.

Agreed, your charater will go on, with transporters, and the tech. in the 25th century death should be almost impossible. (but for the sake of the game, we will call it impossible)
So your character will still go on, but you can lose a ship.
(You just always seem to make it to that esacpe pod some how, or there is a ship just close enough to pick you up and treat your injuries. These Starfleet folk just dont die)
But NPC's die all the time.........on away missions, you know whos not going to make it.....random redshirt NPC

the only time the loss of ships should be common is when there involved in war time operations.
because thats risky.
very risky.

apart from eforcing Falins post and direct you to the other thread i think it would be safe enough to say that people are split with having destroyable ships vs non-destructable ships

i think when a ships hp hits zero and all of its major functions are gone, you have to abandon ship, and then you would respawn back to the nearest starbase, and request a runebout, to tractor the ship to the starbase, then repairs begin, also, if you dont retrieve the ship within 3 hrs it will explode

if noone can attack the runabout while your bringing your ship, then yes that is a good idea. during wartime however, this might be a bit risky if your side has lost the battle or your side advanced with out you

I really like this idea, I agree that a shp shouldnt be indistrucable. And there should defintly be some kind of consiquence for your actions. Perhaps the only way to have a truly player destroyed ship would be if the Captian and his/her senior staff set the ship to self distruct.

I honestly think that ship should not be permanently lost.... how ever upon respawn I think that abilities (whether it be crew.... such as the command nerve for the ship only) or the ship itself should lose some abilities, should detract some money from the guild/ship account as a default insurance premium, and have to purchase ammo for upgraded items (or energy for upgraded items, etc.).
I know that sounds rather pansy, but for the fun factor, if you had to rebuild your entire ship each and EVERY time, then think of how many people would be signing off.
IMO.
I also really like Lootra's idea as well. How ever, I can foresee camping becoming a problem. If you're in a runabout and you have several war birds or something about your former ship, they'll just wait. Ohhhhh! Perhaps have a lockout timer or zone around the fallen ship to protect it from enemies!! Canon wise, it is sound since command codes and areas would be locked out by protocol anyway.
