View Full Version : Beta Testers

I know this is a ways out, but I am *highly* interested in being a beta tester. I have been for many MMORPGs and can offer a great wealth of knowledge, experience, and suggestions for improvement when that time comes.
I searched through the forums and did not find a thread for this topic. Perhaps one can be created? Perhaps this one can be used to generate a Beta Tester request base?

It will probably be a lottery it usually is post counts or something else havent mattered before so when the time comes just apply upload your dxfile and smile:)

I'm sure when the time comes they'll have some type of beta signup page for people to apply. Really doesn't seem all that necessary to start up a topic like this right now.

was wondering how long it'd be before one of these showed up, 1 week, must be a record.

No, but can I suggest patience? The Dev's will announce beta when they reach it, I'm sure they'll ask for current and relevant PC spec info at that time. Numerous (not having a go at you) threads asking for beta will not make it happen any quicker or determine who gets selected. We're all anxious and eager to see what it's like, we just have to allow the development process to happen at it's own rate.

You could get a job, go to a park, see a movie or even gasp... talk to a GIRL.
At the rate your going you will probably develop severe carpal tunnel and probably get blurry vision from staring at your screen 24/7.. Oh well, to each his own.
Have fun.

For me, the beta process doesn't start when I get to play the game. It begins by formulating and sharing ideas, learning from the folk here and getting to know the community I guess. As this is a multiplayer game, I figured it would serve me well to join up here and say hello to the other potential players.
Regardless of my desire to play this now, I've waited long after launch for some games, just because I like to make the time commitment when it suits me. I know some people need to be on board day one, and it's often boasted that 'I was an alpha tester' gives some sort of prestige. I'd much rather at this point the community grows and focuses on just hanging out and getting to know one another, rather than trying to ensure they distingish themselves by putting themselves forward at this moment in time.
No need to segregation right yet, and I'm sure given time, the people with the best input will ensure they are welcomed into the testing process. I've seen one or two people who's posts I greatly enjoyed so far, that I'd definitely like to see help shape the game in fashion, from being active contributors at a more involved level.

Betas probably not what you think. Its probably not just checking out the currently constructed version of the game. Theres probably alot more to do with it, but, how will we learn if we never do Beta Testing, so i might not know what im getting myself into but im open for learning.
As for Beta itself, there probably will come a time when they need Beta Testers, in no way will they bring Beta Testing forward because someone is over-eager. I hope the signup is a random lottery kind of draw. Otherwise i have no chance of beating the big guns in this community. Hey im really really really excited about this game too and i really really really want it, but i cant put in the time and effort to post on this forum every 5 seconds.
If its random, then everyone has a chance. Its fair.

Beta testing will most likely be done in house by Cryptic. After that they will probably have a beta stress test to make sure the game and servers can handle the load they'll get so that will be open at which point you will get a key, download the client, log in, find 500 people all in the same area as you doing the same exact missions, which may make them very frustrating to do. You will then log off and leave, having made a bad impression of the game and thus won't buy it when it does come out.

lol LordDave, well thats a cynical view you got there!
personally, i think they will go through the normal processes, alpha testing in house. then they will do a *experienced* beta test, using people who can prove their previous experience in beta testing, then thay would probably move onto a *load* section, where they get all the nub Betas like me, and some other unnamed people to fill the server up and just hammer the game for a good 6 months or so to find the remaining bugs.. (there are ALWAYS bugs out there). once that has been done they'll have the official release, offer some cookies to teh beta testers and officially forget and screw us for our hard work.. (j/k)
either way we'll probably find out more in 6 or so days...

Beta, I have done so many going back to before meridian online, back then started mostly with Alpha clients, or on some, even just a chat system and up from there...
Would be nice to be involeved here, but they sound like they are past alpha, and moving along well.
May only be a beta when it is time to star really stressing the systems, questing, etc... Should be interesting.
But beta is not get in early, it is suposed to be play and work, hunt find, and duplicate bugs, flaws, and world issues, mechanics etc...

sorry mate but you aint the only person who has tested Beta before hell this shouldn't even be taken into consideration for beta since this is what the closed beta will consist of. Lastly the majority of the people in these forums want to be testers why should they take someone who isnt even that active in relation to some people in here.
it should just be a random selection of people from these forums

Yeah beta's are good to get into espicially for asppiring game testers that want to get into the biz like me. I already got a lot of bug finding experince myself but find it hard sometime to find certian bugs somebody else finds.
So if I do get in beta and you find a bug and I can't bare with me..

Agree.
I have multiple computers (desktop and laptop) with different specs and OS so itd definately benefit from a wide array of testing.
Fortunately champions online is coming out first as noted in the presentation so if we can play champions we can play star trek online

Anyone who asks or begs to be in closed beta or say “ I’am a big trek fan and would like to be in beta” is mainly looking for a free ride.
There is more to beta then free game time you should be only in beta if you want the final product a polish as it can be by looking for bugs, looking for broken game play, playing in the same location weeks on end to find problems that can be game breaking later on.

I think every single member on this site would like to become a beta tester, but unfortunately with the number of people who have already signed up that will probably not be a reality. That being said, I am anxiously awaiting the details of the beta testing program and hope that as many people as possible (including myself) get to participate!

Aye, agreed.
Beta for the most part stinks, servers go up, down up down up down, whenever they feel like it. Bug's like seeing your arm stick through your chest for several days, or plain crashing.
Its nearly a second job. Having said that, they are fun and you do get a tiny peak at the game :). Think it would be a good idea for them to take people from the forums. I remember AoC forums asking them to do that, since some people had been on there for well over three years and still not getting into the beta. A mix of a forum lottery and sign ups would be good, since it would give most of the 'oldies' on the forums (im talking a few years down the line), a thanks for sticking with the game, and lets face it, if you've registered on the forums, you at least are showing a tiny bit of interest in the game.
Kudo's to the guy on the webcast asking for it though.

I liked the answer to Linux was No I wonder if it will work under WINE or something similar.
I run various versions of windows as well as Linux, and if required including vista all 32bit can
be run on 64bit machine but only as 32bit on a 64 bit machine.
We will all just have to wait and wait till someone gets the nod, when its coming near ready.
