You want enforced rules where you can't be named LeetKilla or SirFartsAlot?
I kinda do. I don't mind some silly names but stupid ones just bother me. :p
Also I'd like you to be able to put a first name, middle and last. Maybe a roman numeral at the end or another Middle name. Also the naming conventions could be different for different species.

my post: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=4685
The final part of Character creation is, of course, the name. When naming your character, you have to create a last name, and a first name; this will allow game characters to refer to you by your last name, or your first name, or whatever they’re programmed to do, but it allows more flexible dialog. I realize for some species, like Klingons, they typically don’t have last names, so it shouldn’t be a requirement for those players.
Now, maybe it’s just me, but nothing ruins a MMO’s emersion more then running around and finding characters with names like ‘fnknakjn’ or ‘Mr Big Ballz’. So I propose that a word filter be put onto character naming; names like Jean-Luc Picard, Data, Worf, James Kirk, Seven of Nine, as well as all vulgar words, rank words (commander, Lord, etc), be filtered out. Also filtered out should be periods and brackets and such. Numbers should be converted to roman numeral form (3 -> III) , if possible, or just not allowed also.

As long as we can first and last names I'm cool. As for naming conventions I'd say anything remotely resembling the name of any star trek character or item or location (don't wanna meet Lt. Farpoint) should be forced to change.
Silly names I don't mind, if I get a chuckle out of it, so much the better.

I agree that players should be required to give their characters real names. When I bumped into "irtehpwnz" on Phantasy Star Online I realized that people can be incredibly stupid in naming their characters.

Obviously its a good idea to filter names. I'm sure they will put some effort into this but I don't expect to see nothing that any better then most games.
They really have to allow a broad spectrum of characters due to other languages etc. But it is easily possible to have a dictionary/list. If someone really wanted to be constructive they could start a list with a plan to submit it, this hypothetical person would first need to establish criteria on what is not allowed.
Post-thought:
Making such a dictionary/list would also require a list of pre-defined acceptable names and/or allow people to generate names. Some folks are just no good at thinking up names, they should not feel frustrated in anyway by a character creation process.

LOTR limits names to the languages of middle earth. maybe something simular can be done?

some guys are famous by their well thought of names, this process should be vetted somehow, or a reporting process be implimented, where a player finds another players name in-appropriate, files a complaint, a mod, checks on this and generates a *random* name for the offending characters name which can be changed by support ticket. this may seem like a long winded process, but for those that are knobs about their names then it is just a case of grow up!
for the player who just cant decide on a name and decides to change it there shouldnt be any penalty because a complaint hadn't been recieved by an offended player. eventually a word filter database would be built of the dumbass names banning them into the depths of the interwebz for eternity.
but then again, just make sure you shoot their escape pod if they have a player name like that :p and run a photon torp enema for their troubles:D

Sticklers for detail. The usual MMORPG mob will sign on, and begin grinding, griefing, and chatting in L337. The names found in these forums, mine included, would probably not qualify under a naming convention recognized as Star Trek cannon. I would guarrantee avid fans would dig out their Star Trek Encyclopedia to look up obscure character names to use. It would be a breach of privacy to ask your subscribers to be called "Commander <their real last name>" which I think Gene Roddenberry would have endorsed in the 80's before identity theft was a common crime. Be proud of who you are. Your decendants may indeed realize Gene's futuristic dream and your familys name echo into eternity. I for one do infact share a last name of a character in an original TOS episode, and would be crestfallen if I couldn't use it.

I did suggest this on STO.net, When it comes to naming. You have 2 options, The first, default option is a random name generator, Specific for each race. To allow some flexibility, if you like say your firstname but not your surname you can check an just have the surname change. Choosing this system allows you to play instantly.
The 2nd option is allowing the user to enter his on name but it having to be approved by a GM, or perhaps the community like potbs user content. Players would not be able to enter till their name is approved.
This allows those who really want a specific name to use it, and discourages those with 1337 names and show rip-off names to use the random generator.
I know at launch there may be a severe backlog, So perhaps before launch you can allow players to register their names, like the BF2142 Veteran program. This would allow suitable time to check and approve all names, add disapproved names to a filter that are automatically rejected.
too much work for such a simple and important thing?

i would prefer to have both of those options in because i would love to name my own human character but with races we havent heard or seen much at all it would be tricky making up names so the generator would be usefull aswell :)

Just let people Name their Avatars what they want, if you see one that's offensive report it. if you're on a RP server i'm sure they'd be more diligant about the naming of avatars.
Just remember, if you hav a stupid "Leet" name I won't even talk to you, much less group up with you.

I'm hoping for strict naming rules that are enforced. Nothing kills immersion like some yahoo with a ridiculous name (IE xCptKirkx, Ipwnjoo, Theshiznik, etc).

I completely agree with you Parralax. I do not want to be running around seeing guys like "tehnoobkilla" and "leetsauce". It just makes me kinda mad. I am glad that they are filtering out Ranks and Character names because i also dont want to be surrounded by Kirks and Picards, otherwise when you get to the real characters you think. Wow, this really isnt too much fun for i have seen too many noobs that have made your name so uninteresting.
People are gonna have silly names, i wont use the name Squirrel, ill go for a more traditional (what i think is traditional) name depending on my Race, but there are gonna be people named "Fribble Dinkles" or something like that. I do like to create names with plays on words (e.g. i am a WoW player and my Guild was called "Control Alt Defeat"). Something i like to do, just to put a smile on peoples faces. Also names like "Pheasant Plucker" which some people have heard before. If you havent, try and work the play on words out.
But yeah, i understand there will be people with stupid names, but i generally have the idea that Star Trek Fans are smarter then the average person. You dont find dumb people watching Star Trek because they just dont understand the concept and ideas in the Series. So you will find less people with Stupid Names, hopefully.

This would be a great idea, though if you like unusual chracter names (like I do) then it will get a bit annoying if my favourite character name is not on the list.

RP servers should have strict name rules. Any general server can have what ever name you want. Some peopel want a 'real' trek exprence, names and all, and other dont care.
What I wonder about, name wise, is if we will be able to use the culture names. T'rehes, or will it have to be Trehes. Will it be Krom, Son of Grog or will it be Krom Grogson?

One problem with this philosophy is that the Trek writers themselves used 100's of names throughout the various series and films, and the books alone contain 1000's more. Maybe if we came up with a definative list on this site.... maybe Cryptic might be prepared to act....

We are Borg. Your primitive naming conventions are irrelevant.
There are many names that have not yet been taken.
For instance , Class 4 Tactical Cube 456 of Unimatrix 032, or Class 4 Tactical Cube 778 Secondary Adjunct to Unimatrix 324.
That second one is a double entendre though, so it might not make it past the name filters.

This is unfortunately a fight that cannot be won. People are way too creative in their 'silly' names for any filter to actively catch them all. There will be innumerable Jimkirk ILoveGreenLadies and the like. I don't like it and I wish people, even though it's a game, would at least take their character name somewhat seriously.
Though I did always get a laugh from the guys named Sideshow and Carnival in old EQ, when I first met them I naturally assumed they were just tards because of their names. Craziest pair of halflings I ever met though. That example could really be taken either way, however. You could say it's not the name that's important but the person, but I would really prefer people to look at it more regarding the fact that first impressions mean a lot and they really had to work to make me like them since I first viewed them as tards.

I <3 you. I love you posts....You need to find a Janeway to chase you around.
All thae peopel who wnat true names could go to the RP server, the peopel who wnat to have r0X0rs names, or just don't care, can go to the gen servers. No need to have a list of 1000's of names.

A well-written random name generator can really help those who would normally just put in something nonsensical.
I'm absolutely for strong name restrictions, on both RP and non-RP servers.
Names, especially Klingon and Vulcan, should allow one apostrophe in the name, between other alphabetical characters. A single hyphen might be acceptable too. Too many games deny all punctuation marks, in the name of avoiding --==SillyNamesLikeThis==--.
Players should be able to easily flag names that are inappropriate, and have GMs make a determination.
Names used by characters in the movies or shows should be disallowed, as with references to anything else in SciFi or pop culture. I don't want to see Ensign Kirk or Lt. George Bush.

Then again how many 'tards' are going to want to play Star Trek?Hmm... It'll be the newest MMO when it comes out, likely available in retail stores (and possibly even downloadable through something like Steam), decent graphics, well-recognized name... I'm thinking everyone into MMOs will be playing it for at least the first two weeks, especially the n00bs that bounce from game to game but never get anywhere.
About the only thing I see stopping a flood players (good and bad) is if STO is released at about the same time the next over-hyped World of WarCraft, Age of Conan, or WarHammer game comes out. Then (hopefully) we'll only have the people who want to be here show up. It'll be more like graduate school than high school then.

People with names like 0wnj00 arent gonna rename their chars just for you and CS wont ban people or make people with names like that change them, so if it annoys you that much then DONT PLAY. People might not like your name but they dont have a cry do they? So stop being a bunch of moany lil girls and just play, no one is forcing you to talk to them or even look at their names so you have 2 options. 1. get over it and play or 2. Dont play, i'd rather play with someone with a name like 0wnj00 than some moany lil girls that crys over such stupid lil things, grow up.
