While none of us know for sure as there is very little information about actual in game stuff so far, the galaxy has currency, PE mentioned prestige points, but also the Ferengi had latinum. I'm sure there are others. As far as currency for the entire game, I'm sure they'll come up with something. A MMO absolutely HAS to have some type of economy.

Personally, I'm hoping that "prestige" will be the currency in STO. I think it's a fair way to explain how things get done in the Federation without having a standard currency. I still think gold pressed latinum should be in the game, too, but it should only be able to buy things outside the Federation. It's simple and makes sense in the Trek universe.

That's just what I was thinking :D

While the above idea sounds nice in theory, I don't think any of us want to be bothered with keeping track of two different currencies.

Be glad your not from germany. Al the Star Trek- site- owner of germany have been waiting since 2002 and now appearing in every single thread praising their Sites. Tey are making money bevor the game started. http://forums.startrekonline.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
really- you canīt say a word in german threads without having vour or five "comments" with advertises.

money is useless withing the federation it self. the only time money is ever used is when dealing with outside races. i don't think money should be a major part of this game seeing that most ships are self suficiant with replicators. also one of the things that has really bugged me is when people sell in game credits for real money on ebay or what ever

I think "prestige" would be the best idea, as opposed to payments, with regards to earning ships; you'd earn prestige with your respective command structure, which would put you through the ranks, and on to better ships.

this is very true, this is why the people at the previous Dev team (P2 or PE or whatever you want to call them now :) ) worked more exclusively with startrek-online.net.
I think the original poster was referring strictly to in-game economy. I think that we will see different forms of spendable items. We will likely have skill points to spend on ground and space skills. We will have prestige to spend on Officer advancement. We will have credits earned to buy non-combat items and likely black market items. All of this is speculation of course, however if Cryptic sticks with P2's model we should all see some of the above.

I see it this way, that you get fed creds for completing fed missions, but then that's just a grind to complete mission after mission.
And that you get prestige for completing fed missions favourably (i.e if you find a peaceful solution, rather than a shooting solution)/doing humanitarian/brave things (i.e saving a ship about to explode or make an important discovery), and you have to think to earn prestige points.

credits=more freedom and we still dont know if its gonna be a civilian faction in the game

I don't think there is any way that Star Trek Online won't have some kind of economy, it just remains to be seen exactly what kind. No matter what direction Cryptic takes economy-wise, I am sure it will be what is best for the game.
