I don't know whether someone has already talked about this; I'm wondering how the ingame advancement system will work...

That is, in regards to ranking, skills, etc. Will it be something similar to the EVE ONLINE skill training system?
To me a passive system would seem best, as not to disadvantage people who can't play as much.

Any thoughts?

I've seen it mentioned in a few places but everything is pure speculation at this point. I'm with the crowd hoping for an eve type advancement system.

I'll give any type of advancement system a shot but that was the only thing I really liked about eve personally, the rest was just, I don't know, dated?

The MMO character systems I personally find fun are the ones where advancement is a means to further character customisation rather than increases in generic class power.

Take for example EvE Online and Guild Wars where character advancement is in principle rather basic but opens up a wealth of possible options for customising, refining, tinkering and experimentation.

If character development is going to play a central role in gameplay, and in a Star Trek MMO it certainly seems like it should, then in my view it should be fun and engaging even if grind is inevitable. I want to play around with my character if character development is central, I want to work on my character when I feel it needs worked on, not work to unlock the next "level" of a fairly linear class based system.

I personally am a very big fun of the skillbar system used in Guild Wars, limited slots, hundreds of choices, thousands of combinations, and I loathe the unlimited slot, near zero personal choice skillbars of so many other MMOs. Such a simple and subtle change makes a world of difference to gameplay, and to my enjoyment of these games and their character development options.

I see there is not much info on the subject yet - I like the idea of skill training though I do see some of the problems of such a system. Having a skill training system coupled with comprehensive and complex personal character improvement would seem like a good solution though.
