So does anyone know what the odds are of Cryptic being allowed to and using the new DMM system for Star Trek Online?

I don't know what DMM stands for but as far as ship collision I'd say yes, please. Player collision I think is more trouble than its worth.

Trouble, not just because of idiots blocking your path as npc's do that as well (aoc). I can totally understand ship collision though and maybe even damage due to collision depending on how they handle lag.

Sorry wasnt thinking it stands for Digital Multi Matter and it makes things like materials in game act realistically when struck and what not.

also its not a plaayer collision sys Im refering to its a materials collision sys. Example phaser blast strikes the hull of a ship. How does the hull take the realistically react to the hit in the star trek universe.

I gotcha, just remember a lot of us are geeks (and proud of it) but not all are uber geeks :) Btw coming from me that's a compliment.

I'll let you know when I get back to earth. :p

I think LA is using something similar, in SW:FU, called Digital Molecular Matter or something like that. I think something like this would be a massive system hog in an MMO. I don't think we would find something li ke this in STO.

I would still like to see some sort of collision detection (that causes damage) though. Give captains the choice of ramming their ship right into the enemy (Star Trek: Nemesis) or make us wary while travelling in debri-heavy zones such as asteroids or other junk. It would certainly add a new level of tactics to the game. :)

I'd like for ships to be able to collide, you could ram another ship as a last ditch attempt! :p

I know this would be asking to much but I would like to see some major hull // structural damage when this happens. Not only would it have a visual effect on the ship but also forces you to close off certain sections of the ship because of hull breaches, ect. :)

No.
This is due to the limits of the servers mostly as well as the necessity. The Galaxy will be a mostly unchanging place. You won't be shooting a phaser at a tree, burning the tree up, then anyone who comes by will see a burnt tree. When you shoot a tree it'll show a burn mark for a few seconds then disappear.

Yeah SW:FU is where I first heard about the DMM fireburn. Also I realize it would have limited applications in an MMO but it would still be nice to see this sys. applied to at least ships and possibly away team missions (where everything would most likely be instanced anyway thus reducing load on the server cause it would all go away when you go back to your ship)
