View Full Version : What happens when you die?

I searched the threads and didn't see any in relation to this topic.

What does everyone think will happen when you die?

Of course no one wants their ship to blow up and their crew to be killed... but everyone wants to kill other peoples ships right? I imagine if there is a PvP battle ground there will be no consequences for death, just an all out war to see who is better. But world PvP? I realize this isn't going to be anything like WoW, but if I can't kill other players I will not be impressed.

How does Eve Online death work? Will it be like that? A ship graveyard or something?

EvE online works through two premises.
First, when you're ship is destroyed you're ejected into a pod. You can get insurance on your ship to get money back and such but pretty much it blows up, you lose it, move on.
Secondly, when in a pod, if killed, your character actually dies. You lose a ton of skill points that can take you weeks to build up. This is compensated by the skill clone, which basicaly allows you to create a clone of yourself that retains a bunch of skill points more than you would have without it.

Basically, I think the pod and ship lost would work well in STO but cloning? Nope.

I doubt we'll see Players actually dying, there's not a good canon way to bring them back to life.

I think there may be a lot of surrendering too, ship systems all fail and such and you're forced to just surrender to your enemy. Having this in the game in some form seems to make more system. Not in all cases, but many.

Not neccesarily no!

I for one am not all that into PvP eventhough i would enjoy it from time to time considering the fact it's not a gank fest 'o course! But for me this game will be great to immerse myself into the diverse and different cultures of the Star Trek universe and to deepen out my own character as i go along. Meeting with others is crucial and great fun therefore i consider myself to be more 'o a socialiser and not neccesarily a killer that does nothing but fight star ship battles...

I like these ideas. Especially surrendering once your ship is basically done for. Sticks more to the Star Trek way to. Maybe once you disable a ship you can teleport some goods of their ship... if there is a pirate class or something.... but I doubt Klingons would have a problem with doing it.

quoted from the "starship destruction and you" thread:

Person - Person, lets assume your ship is boarded or you are on a planet and get shot a few times and 'die', I think it would be conceiveable to be transported to sickbay and revived.
yeah that would probablly be the best bet, especially since Geordie developed a personell transporter which could of been developed further so that when you reach critical you would be automatically teleported to Sickbay and healed :)

Ship - Ship, I always imagined your ship becoming a flaming hulk to where at a certain point you would be unattackable, at this stage you would have to go around and help and coordinate getting your ship back online, and prioritize, once you bring weapon systems back online you should be a target again, so repair your shields and hull first.

that is exactly what i want to happen!! :D

also, if it gets implemented, you should be penalised for self-destrucing your own ship

Well it could be like CoH where when you die, you get beamed back to the ship orbiting your location and be "revived".

As for ship to ship... ejection pods or perhaps they just get crippled and you gotta repair it or something.

We are Borg. Your mortality in irrelevant. A sign of your inferior nature.

In the collective, when biological components expire, they are rendered down and re-absorbed as nutrients required by the the biological components of the active drones, in an endless perfect cycle.

But that's just what works for us. We think you'll enjoy it.

If the game becomes full of FedHead who merely want to spend their time being munchins then this will get boring very quickly - though the thought of a Kilingon fleet terrorising the Alpha quadrent... oh yes :)

dont worry Resj ;) thanks to the "what side will you pick" most people are splitting between the Feds and Klingons about 60/40 to the feds so far from what i gather but then i am probably wrong on the odds :)

Die during 'on foot' missions: I would say you get beamed back to the ship and you take a hit (be it time (WoW), xp debt (CoH), temp loss in ability (LotRO), etc).
Ship gets blowed up: You get 'towed' back to the nearest Starbase or Shipbay or whatever they are called, for ship repairs. this would be one of the few monetary sinks, especially if a good number of people have their own ships.

No permadeath please.

No ship permadeath please either but make a good amount of incentives to NOT have your ship destroyed. Maybe it takes resources and influence to fix it (or rez it, permadeath is too much to ask for from a lore perspective for gameplay). Maybe it takes a bit of time.
However I want to be able to PvP without much if any badness to come out of a death. Just give me badness when I die to an NPC.
