New recruitment thread: http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=31815

Hi all, I'm Capt. Crandall of the USS Explorer.

I've been following development of this game since day one with the hope that it would turn out with a much better exploration element than the past ST games. Not knowing how the game is going to shape up yet, I would be interested in having a fleet comprised of ship captains looking for a good blend of all elements of Trek. Exploration being the primary mission, battle will ensue at some point in order to maintain the integrity of the Federation.

If you are interested in a fleet dedicated to a primary mission of exploration, then I welcome you to join up under this fleet's flagship, the U.S.S. Explorer.

Activities will commence once the game is released. Given the uncertainty still involved, I have no idea what the future will bring to this fleet. But given the information released so far, it seems likely that a mission of exploration will be very possible, and enjoyable, in this new Star Trek universe. I am very dedicated to running the game as canon as possible, mostly like a 'simulation'. But I am aware it is a game and some flexibility must be included.

Feel free to reply with thoughts or initial applications to the fleet, as final selections will have to take place closer to the release date.

I am happy to hear there is some interest in an exploration oriented fleet. In response to your applications, once we are closer to the release of the game I will message all who voiced an interest in order to make sure your interest is still there and to formalize the fleet. Those ready and willing to explore strange new worlds and civilizations at that time, will be welcomed into the fleet. Thanks for your replies and, in a preliminary fashion, welcome aboard! :D

Captain Crandall,

I am currently at the low tide end of my fortune. I am not even sure I can purchase a ship right now. But I am willing to work my way aboard and until such time as you go left and I go right I would gladly crew for a fellow explorer.

I have a few of questions.
When the distortion is over and we can set sail do you know where one goes to put their X down?
Is your ship in the design phase or has it been built?
Could you replicate me some soup?

While I enjoy reading your creative words, I'm not sure I completely understand what is being asked. But I'll give it a shot:

1. I assume you mean how do you join the fleet.

Real response: I will be contacting each person who requested to be part of the fleet once the game is nearing release. Please read my previous postings regarding this.

Trek response: Please continue to monitor this channel as we approach the end of the distortion period.

2. I assume you mean the ship I describe in my signature.

Real response: It is in the design phase, and my next step is to try and build a model using parts from existing ships.

Trek response: As captain of the ship coming from an engineering background, I am overseeing the ship's design in Utopia Planitia's shipyards. Initial construction has begun, and the ship is expected to be completed within 3 years. It will carry the initial registry of NX-93031 as an engineering prototype and once commissioned for traditional service, will be given the registry NCC-93031.

3. I'll see what I can do.

Thank you for your interest in the fleet.

Beta testing has not begun yet for this game. I would strongly suggest watching the webcast that is posted on the site in order to get a better grounding of where the game stands. We are less than 3 years away from release date, but that is the best knowledge we have.

Thanks for your interest in joining the fleet.

I would like to join your fleet of explorers. My ship and crew are at your disposal. I also wish this game tro be as canon as possible but there are sure to be some players that will not conform i hope the developer finds a way to inforce the prime directive because it wouldnt really be starfleet without that.

Im quite sorry for my terrible punctuation.

Thank you for making a exploration based fleet it seems people have forgoten the main objective of starfleet in game production.

"To explore strange new worlds and civilizations, to boldly go where no man has been before."

Capt. Klang of the uss Republic. I'm not sure if this fleet is still recuiting or not. I was the 2nd capt of the USS Explorer on msn chat role playing a few year back (large rp). It would be an honor to capt a ship in an exploration fleet again.
I to think it cool that there is a USS Explorer in the online game. I am sure Cpt. Mcquinly (were ever he is now) would think it cool to. If there is an opening in the fleet I stand ready to transfer in at your request Capt Crandall.

Thanks for your interest. Yes, I will be keeping open the 'initial interest' registration until probably about time of the public beta, when I know enough to finalize the fleet. Really, I don't know if I ever plan on closing it. At this rate, the Explorers fleet will be one of the largest in the game. I just hope interest stays up given the potentially long wait to release.

You are the second person to mention something about previous RP ships named Explorer. I hope that my ship can live up to that legacy and that the fleet name will be even more an extension of that.

Once again, I thank everyone for their continued interest.

I wanted to address something that had been on my mind (and I'm sure some others) for a bit now, the official Explorers fleet website.

While I don't think it is yet truely necessary to establish a website, I would like to be making intial inroads into the thought process. I am not a very skilled web designer myself, having only dabbled in some basic html. However, I assume at some point a fleet member will surely come along who has some web authoring skills.

I am thinking the formal website should be up and running by time of fleet finalization, or shortly before. Therefore, that time frame depends on what release date information the developers give us. In the near future, I may set up a preliminary website which would provide a basic registry of 'interested' members and a forum to discuss the fleet.

I forsee a website which will explain some about the game, our misssion of exploration, and provide a registry of members and their related information. It will have a place for guests to express interest and members to speak their minds. Hopefully, this will all be done with some nice graphical flair and trek related touches.

At first, a free, basic provider should suffice. Once we get more involved and a web authoring person secured, then something hosted and more substantial developed.

Let me know your thoughts here on the fleet thread (if you have expressed interest in the fleet). I look forward to your ideas.

Capt. Crandall,
I would like to toss my name in the hat in support of this endeavor, I like the idea of a Exploration based fleet, and would be interested in helping to what ever is needed to building a top notch ship yard to build the best deep space exploring vessels in the galaxy.

Although it maybe a bit early for me to commit 100% as I am going to have to be sold on the game play before I make a hard choice to play it full time. I am a long time fan and very excited to see what Cryptic puts out, I am currently playing COH, so I have great hope they are going to do this up right.

Hopefully after they get Champions launched, we'll see more details on what were going to be playing and how things will be done, so that you and this fleet can make choices on how to move forward.

Here is to the hope we get a great game and billions of new star systems to explore, photograph and share stories about. I look forward to it.

Right now, this points to this official fleet thread, but once a website is established it will be changed to that. One more step in the process is now done.

Greetings, Captain Crandall! May I ask a few questions, please?
I like your mission, to explore the galaxy. Obviously, your ship is being constructed according to developed and tested technology. But, as a would-be Engineer, I am interesting in exploring various types of propulsion for starships. Would I be allowed to conduct such research aboard the Explorer--just using computer models and simulations, that is?
Also, Engineering responsibilities include safety protocols, and I have a few ideas about safety products that might be useful aboard a starship. Would I be allowed to offer suggestions from time to time about such (futuristic) inventions?
If so, I would be very interested in serving aboard your vessel, Captain! Exploration is the key to learning!

Thank you all for your interest in joining the fleet! I'm excited at the prospect of this fleet continuing to expand.

As it grows, I see it as possibly being a more loosely tied group of ships and commanders than what other fleets may have. This would allow for each person to 'do their own thing' while creating a bond between people that would foster cooperation in completing group missions or in surviving, and hopefully winning, battles.

For instance, when an Explorers Fleet member would find themselves exploring unknown space an encounter a hostile force, they could call on their other members who are online to aid them. Or, if there is a group mission that peaks someone's interest then they could put a call out to the fleet for assistance.

As I've said before, once more details are finalized and we near the release of this game, much of this fleet will be formalized. A website will be created and it will have a forum for us to discuss all of the fleet's news and happenings.

I look forward to serving with each of you and preliminarily welcome all whom have applied to join the fleet into Explorers Fleet. If you do happen to find another fleet that better matches what you are seeking, then please feel free to switch. Final collection of fleet members will be done at a later time closer to game launch. Thanks again.

P.S. There continues to be some people under the old impression of what the game will consist of. It is no longer you as one crew member on a ship who works through the ranks. You are the commander of your own vessel. I encourage you to read more on the game and get a better handle on what it will actually be like. Thanks.

Deep Space Hail From Deltan Chryse - Somewhere near the XB47 nebula - Beta Quadrant
To Fleet Captain Crandall aboard the "Explorer"

Greetings Fleet Captain Crandall

Your communcation about the new Explorer fleet has only just reached me here deep in the
beta quadrant. I have been looking for a fleet that is dedicated to the goal of exploration and am impressed
by your posts, and by those seeking to join. It would be an honour to serve in such a fleet.

As you know, exploration can reveal great knowledge and power that in the wrong hands could
threaten the peace and stability of the worlds we inhabit. I am sure you would agree that the Exploration fleet therefore needs the protection of ships powerful enough to protect it from both known enemies and from hostile forces that are as yet unknown.

I offer you my services and the resource of my new ship that is being built near the XB47 nebula. Rest assured this will be a ship capable of taking, and when nececessary inflicting, great damage in order to defend the crews aboard our ships, and to protect the lives of all our allies.

I look forward to further communication when possible.

Greetings Captain Crandall

I guess its stil too early to start doing things....but....what about ship numbering conventions for the explorer fleet? Maybe we should have a fleet designation numbering system ? Just an idea....

Oh and I just read in forum that it will be possible to visit DS9 - thats gonna be so cool if it happens....

May Majel Barrett rest in peace.....

crandall31
12-22-2008, 10:48 AM
That's a valid idea, but we'll have to see how the game handles the ship registries. It may be automatic based on when you got your ship. I remember reading somewhere that they hope to allow you to choose your number, hence why I've already chossen the one in my sig based on extrapolation of the sereies and movies to the given time period. I could be off though.

I'm sure DS9 will be a busy place. They will have to add more docks for sure.

ThePurpleNinjaa

crandall31

crandall31

I'd like to informally announce the fleet's flagship. Knowing that this is only the first ship in the game to be detailed, it does however almost perfectly fit the description for what I'm looking for as the icon of this fleet. An exploration vessel well equipped for battle is exactly what is needed at the head of our front lines of both exploration and defense of territory and resources. The NX-91001 (formal class name is needed!) class vessel will be the goal I shall strive to obtain as my ship, the fleet flagship, and it will become the USS Explorer with the registry of NCC-93031. This ship could also become the standard ship deployed in the fleet by advanced members.

delta.deltan
12-29-2008, 04:24 AM
Ohhh - Maybe all the classes could be Explorer Class but with different Level ranks. For example, a 91001 could be an Explorer VII. A base ship might be Explorer I. Then there could be some lvl system as a ship in the fleet evolves. Not sure if this suits what we want or how the game evolves....

Damn i want this game to start....

And to you also Capt. Remy and Traveler. I forget where I was reading or watching, but I got the hint that we should see this game out late this year, maybe Q3, probably Q4, after Champions is released and that fanfare dies down. I've already lined up what graphcis card will be powering my machine, as by that time it will be cheap enough and quite powerful enough. The new 55nm based revision of the GTX 260, shown here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-130-441
And that is my recommendation to all, is to get those graphics cards primed for the amazing show that this game will surely bring. I'm sure my 8800 GT would do fine, but I want the max amount of borg garbage blasting around as Explorer Fleet rips them to shreds when they mess with the Federation! And who knows, maybe physx will be incorporated and that old card will be dedicated to handling that side of things. comments welcome!

"However, you do get to keep your ships. So, if you find yourself in a situation where an earlier ship would be more useful, you can switch back to it for that encounter. For example, you might want to shift back to a smaller and more maneuverable ship for running a blockade."

Pulled this from the latest "ask cryptic" article. This puts an unexpected spin on things. So it would be wise then to build your way up through the game with the mindset that what ships you chose earlier may come in handy later on down the line. Very interesting. I'm seeing my NX-91001 class being backed up by choices of a defiant, nova, and saber (heavy tactical, small exploration, and light/small tactical). Thoughts?

The-Traveler
01-11-2009, 03:30 PM
Well, just a thought here, but if they do a whole academy thing they could give you a shuttle. then once you are an ensign you would get a small ship i.e. Defiant class. Just a thought.

Capt.Remy

Ship choices along with Crew training will be vital to being able to utilize the different vessels you find important or useful in certain tasks, if I remember correctly, fleets will have the ability to build special ships and or ship items important to our cause, so there will be a need for Captains to perform tasks that promote these advancements and in turn give our fleet a edge in our endeavors.

On a side note, I have noticed many people have been picking out names for their Ships, there will be the inevitable run in with not getting to use the name you want, like many MMOs you sometime have to have back up names for your avatar. In that light I have been putting off the choice of a name, mainly because I had not been able to come up with anything that I felt was something I liked nor, was somewhat meaningful to what the Fleet was about, until today, when i had the Idea to use the names of great Explores from the past, so i wanted to purpose to the Fleet commander and our captains the thought of using these names as alternative to those that you have already chosen, It would be fitting I think to have this kinda of Idea in mind for people coming on board that may not have a ship name in mind, and could use this as a guide. Just an Idea I am throwing out for opinions, I myself am going to be pulling from this source.

That list is great, Capt. Remy, and I think it's an excellent idea. You're talking ship names, correct? A whole fleet of these explorers would make it quite clear what we're all about. There's only one little hitch...they're all Terran names. Realistically, in the Star Trek universe, we would see a list of "famous" explorers from all over the known universe. This is not a point I would push but it's something to consider. I'll be participating (more than likely) as a human so I would be quite proud to represent some of the listed names. However, for those who plan on participating as an alien species, they might want to come up with their own historic explorers. But the results and intent would be the same.

I must say, Capt. Crandall, I was pretty surprised when I read about maintaining possession of previous ships. That's a lot to keep track of on the servers....a whole crew PLUS a group of ships per player (although you can only fly one ship at a time). But, as our Fleet continues to grow, it will mean that as a group we'll have the flexibility to accomplish whatever we set our minds to.

As far as video cards go, I'm running Lord of the Rings Online with a 8800 GTS with all the settings maxed out and it's running fine. The only thing I'm missing, really, is DX10. For some reason I'm not imaging that STO is going to "outdo" LoTRO on the graphic front. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just think at best they'll be on par. So I'll wait for the specs to come out and see. Maybe I'll just add more memory.

Happy New Year to the Fleet and I look forward to seeing everybody in the game soon.

This list is excellent Capt. Remy, but there are a couple things wrong here. First, it is Terran names. Second, this is all WAY before 25th Century stuff. There has to be modernish names. Such as Zephram Cochrane who invented warp drive. Or Captain Kirk who discovered a vast majority of stuff. Or Janeway who explored the Delta Quad. and made first contact with a BUNCH of species, and fought the Borg. So we have to consider pre 22nd Century and post.

Capt. Remy, excellent job on that list. I believe you've captured the spirit of this fleet well.

I'll agree with our fleetmates that if one were to limit their thoughts and choice of a ship name to explorers, the list should include the great explorers that the history of Star Trek has brought us. But I think that same person can do the necessary research into it if so interested, and we can even add on to your list if someone cares to go ahead with that research.

But I'm not going to limit the name of a fleet member's ship, as for example they may have had some fantastic Trek world going for some time now and just because they join this fleet means they can't have the ship name they always wanted. Like I have always wanted my ship to be named "Explorer". Simple and appropriate in this situation, but I think you'll get the point if you think about if I had joined or created a combat oriented fleet and wanted that name. Now I will refuse outright stupidity or what have you, but I think the list is a great "suggestion" and starting place for those looking to join this fleet and the mission of exploration.

But I encourage this type of thing further and at some point I'll get a simple website and forum going, something that can be expanded out as time allows. I've done simple sites before it's just a matter of finding the time to sit down and do it decently. Then we can have dedicated spots for things like this. So I guess once this thread starts getting into a few different lines of conversation, that will be the definite time to make something happen.

I look forward to more interaction between fleet members.

The list was merely meant to be a jumping off point, and as always, a suggestion for those looking for ship name Ideas, as a big COH player, sometimes coming up with a name that has not already been taken can be tough, and the Idea of using past explorers to name our ships seemed to be fitting enough an Idea to post it for opinions, I am by no means saying we restrict members to using only the names on the list, but merely a list of suggestions when your stumped in finding a name that hasn't already been taken, as I would assume we'll see 40 different USS Enterprises spelled in a multitude of different ways or with numbers behind them, and we don't even yet know if Cryptic will be allowing us to name our ships anyway, so this Idea may all be for not, should they see fit to just assign us a pre named ship, it isn't like Kirk or Janeway chose the name of the ship they commanded, they were assigned to it. Anything can happen until we have in in our hands.

I do realize the list is earth based and not up to date, again, a starting point and with the hope that others here would toss their insight and information into the mix to make the list more complete and useful to those interested in using it.

I have been involved with COH for 3 years now, and prior to that I spent 5 years running a Day of Defeat clan, our forums were a place to exchange ideas and help build the community to make playing as a group like hanging out with friends, always a good time.

I was checking in on the home page of STO today and found a new entry about a contest. They are seeking a story to be written about the first encounter with a new, unexplored planet. Given we've got some exploration types around these parts, I figured I would post it and draw some attention. If any fleet preliminary members would like to enter, permission is granted to mention the fleet name or anything related to the fleet in your story. But be sure and send me a PM with it so I can have a look. Well, I wish luck to whomever enters and the link to the rules page is below:

crandall31
03-05-2009, 08:33 PM
That's some interesting conversation going there. Maybe there is a ship discussion thread somewhere? I think the Intrepid class stands a good chance of carrying through as we know we will see ships like the akira class which was out before intrepid if I remember correctly. I would expect them to finally retire ships like excelsior class and those old 'orginal series' era ships. Ships introduced in the next gen era should be safe I hope. I see the Nebula class becoming a popular choice for this fleet, unless the Luna class makes it in to replace it, as these classes were created for exploration.

I'm glad we are still attracting new people interested in our mission of exploration. Hopefully everyone will still be interested come d-day when the game is released.

Salutations, Captain Crandall.

I have been perusing fleet forums, and I must say that the Explorer Fleet sounds incredibly promising. Its stated mission of exploration and advancement lies most in line with both my goals and the goals of the Federation. Additionally, I have been heartily impressed by your own intelligence, tact, and respectful manner as fleet commander.

I do not know what the future will bring- namely whether I will command a ship when the time comes or not, but I would be honored if you would consider my preliminary application. Assuming the galaxy opens for exploration within a reasonable amount of time, I think you would find my ship and my crew a valuable asset for your fleet.

Respectfully yours,

I'm curious, Captain, if you plan on having a rank system within the fleet. Perhaps not a traditional rank system per se (Lieutenant, Ensign, etc), but a structure of positions and responsibilities within a classic chain of command. Shall you have a second-in-command? Will certain individuals be tasked with coordination of science expeditions, warfare raids, and so on?

I realize it is very early to ask, and having no answer would be completely understandable, but I'd like to hear any thoughts you may have on the subject.

Will certain individuals be tasked with coordination of science expeditions, warfare raids, and so on?

I realize it is very early to ask, and having no answer would be completely understandable, but I'd like to hear any thoughts you may have on the subject.

Thank you for your inquiry.

I personally do not see the need to have a sophisticated command structure set up at this point in time given the large number of unknowns about gameplay. I also want this fleet to be comprised of players on the same level, that are part of a fleet in order to have better access to resources whether that is a mineral on a planet or fellow ships ready to come to your aid in a conflict. Also, given how the developers have revealed that some missions will require multiple ships to complete, we can band together to accomplish those tasks. Everyone is going to be a Captain, and I'm merely the facilitator of interaction between those that share a goal of exploration.

Once the gameplay mechanics are known (maybe something such as a fleet leader being able to delegate responsibilities for certain taks or items), then I can begin to see what I will need for a command structure. I do plan on having a few people as second-in-command or such to able to help implement the fleet in the game, but that is still TBD.

i know I've said it before, but I do plan on starting a website dedicated to the fleet where members can communicate, ideas can be expressed, others can learn about our mission of exploration and express interest in joining, and so on. I plan to implement that before game launch and have all interested members on that site and ready to support fleet operations come launch. I want this fleet to be recognized for being leaders in seeking out the unknown while balancing protection of the Federation.

And I will also throw out a new thought that this has brought up. I will be choosing the Engineering specialty for myself. I will more than likely ask that my second in command be science oriented. Also, I will probably find the need for a lead person in each specialty so that they become the expert for the fleet in that field and when it comes time for a mission we can all collaborate and determine the best course of action given our unique perspectives. So whatever the game may bring like tactical, medical, ops, etc. for specialties, keep this in mind.

Again, thank you for raising the question and I encourage anyone who wishes to know more about plans for the fleet to ask and I'll try to respond best I can.

If Crandall hasn't privately greeted you already, I'm sure he'll get around to it soon enough; he seems like a rather busy man.

On another note, recent posts have begged me to pose these questions to everyone who wants to be in this fleet: What field do you plan on making your specialty (science, engineering, security, tactical, etc)? What ship configuration would you want the most?

I personally am planning on taking a Tactical focus in a Sovereign class starship. My primary goal is peaceful exploration, sure, but I like to have an edge if I find myself in a firefight.

I'm heavily leaning towards a focus on science. I'm hoping to make a lot of first contacts, gather data and technology to send back to the Federation.

My favorite show was always Voyager and I love the Intrepid class, but since I plan on going to the edge of nowhere with little support, I'm going to need a ship that's capable in many areas. The NX-91001 seems to be the best so far, but I'll wait to see what else is up developments sleeve.

Thank you for extending a welcome for me. My real life duties as an aerospace engineer have kept me from the forums for the past little while.

I am really happy to see the thread buzzing with a conversation point (specialties and ships). I encourage everyone to speak their mind and keep engaged with fellow fleet members. One of these days, I'll sit down and startup that website.

But I have a comment for those of you talking ships. It is reasonable to assume we will be given something little more than a scout type vessel to begin with. Then, as an individual captain earns prestige (to reference a previous trek game), we should gain the ability to upgrade and enhance our ships. So I'm expecting starting classes to be those like a nova, steamrunner, or norway. While I'm sure we all want a sovereign or galaxy class level ship, it will most likely take time to reach that point.

But on the topic of specialties, I shall choose engineering for obvious reasons. I hope that I may be able to lend my fleetmates a hand in the design of their ships with my real world experience in mechanical and structural design work.

Until next time....

I have read this Thread and i believe this is the fleet for me. So I request permission to join this fleet? I plan to go with Command / tactical and hoping to start in or get a stream-runner while I work for a deep space explorer with heavy influence on defense so if we run to trouble it will be able to take a beating and still be able to take on two more if need be. I want to go deeper into space then anyone has gone before. But if need be i'll run a excalibur class doing grunt work because someone has to right. I don't want a big ship I believe in tough small ships are better.

FYI for Explorers fleet preliminary members, I have replied to the offer for an alliance with the following:

"Greetings Starfleet 360 Empires, I have reviewed your offer for an alliance between our fleets. At this time, I am not entering into any alliances due to the uncertainty that is still about with the gameplay and the fleet system, as well as the premise that everyone in Starfleet operates under the same flag and therefore should support each other in that fashion. At a future point in time, I will be revisiting any alliance offers made to determine if they are right for Explorers fleet. I thank you for your interest in an alliance and look forward to our encounters in space."

Anyone that feels differently or has a comment about my position on alliances at this time should send me a personal message for consideration. Thanks.

Well said.

Until we have additional information from Cryptic on how things work, it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to move in any particular direction.

It is curious that there has been very little info released on the fleet system.

This one's tough as well. We have even less info regarding quadrant maps. Will Cryptic use one of the canon maps? If we head to specific coordinates will we find Vulcan? or will there be no map system at all (Bridge Commander)?

Additionally, they have the creative license to add interesting locals for us to explore and to advance the story. We have no idea what to expect.

I guess my point is that we're making the assumption that things will be where they ought to be and that we'll still want to go there after the game launches. We may find new places that were never discussed in any of the shows/movies.

I would expect a map to be utilized that followed the canon alpha, beta, gamma, and delta quadrant setup with the known planets in their proper places. I don't see a reason to do anything other than that. But we shall have to see how far we can get and how quickly. I don't plan on setting my navigation on a random target in the gamma quadrant and running at top warp for two weeks. But I do plan on making my way out into unexplored territory, which I think there will be a lot of. I expect the fleet to follow suit, keeping relatively together but each person exploring on their own or with fleet members as the situation warrants. There are just too many unknowns at this point. For instance, we probably don't want to tangle with the Borg too much so we shouldn't steer that way unless we have a very formidable force with us or a very good reason (resources?).

Since there was mention at some point of fleets being able to set up 'bases' of some type then I would think we would reach a point where setting up a good outlying base of operations for not only ourselves but for Starfleet would make sense. A good departure point for further exploration so you can come back and refuel, repair, or refit. But, that is still largely unknown and all we can do is make a plan once we have the necessary information. Great question though.

My fellow fleet captains,

I am seeking inputs from the fleet regarding a free forum I can sign up for and transfer all fleet communications to. I would like the ability to have multiple catagories and threads, as well as multiple levels of user control that I could assign. Some level of customization would be nice as well. Please send me a personal message with your information as to where I can find the service and any details you may have supporting its worthiness. Thank you in advance for your help, as this will aid all fleet members, present and future, in better communication regarding the fleet.

In regard to free forums:

I created a free website a while back using webs.com (formerly freewebs.com), and it had forums as part of the customizable site you could create. It was simple, easy, and it allowed for multiple pages for a site which i think would be useful in our present situation (a page for an intro to the fleet, a page for fleet members, then the forums themselves, etc).

Aside from that, a simple google search shows me that free forum sites such as forumer.com and lefora.com appear the most promising.

That's my two cents.

Good morning everyone.

Captain Crandall and I have discussed the need to pull all of the relevant STO facts and post them in one location for the fleet to view. Cryptic has a way of releasing info in nanobits thru various outlets. This has been so frustrating to many of us that posting what we do know may help ease the pain until the game is released.

I’ve volunteered to track all of the game news/interviews that directly affect the fleet. This list is focused on fleet operations and exploration news. Some of you may notice that many of the items on the list came from HyorD’s “Everything we know about Star Trek Online” (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=14535). His list is much larger in scope and I encourage everyone to read the data he’s collected.

I will continue to scan the forums to pull as much info as I can. Perhaps when we get the website it will be a better location to post the entire list, but this will have to do for now.

Last word; I have not tracked sources. If many of you feel that it is important, I’ll do so. I HAVE avoided speculation. If it didn’t come from Cryptic, it didn’t make it on the list.

“Make it so…”

Cmdr. Logan Summers

• It has been said that species you meet will inherently like the fed or Klingons because of diplomacy or past relations. If a player plays as a Klingon, finds a new civ and destroys one of their space ships, they would be more likely to make friends with the Federation.

• You may see a "Cryptic" fleet but they will not be "Q" level or buffed out. Cryptic has a policy in place that prohibits employees from using any kind of Dev or GM power (on live servers) to make themselves more powerful.

• Highly suggested that since the starter ship will be a "small" Miranda class; explorers should consider grouping together for deep exploration until they have access to the larger ship classes.

• You'll have the ability to recruit bridge officers from planets you've done missions for. There are rare Bridge Officers that you'll only get access to when you do high-end content, some you'll get through luck and exploration.

• Space exploration takes place on different scales: Galaxy, sector and system. On the galactic map, you can see what different sectors you can visit. Upon selecting a sector, you will be taken to the sector map, where you will see a tactical overview of the sector, with information on the various systems you can visit. Once you have entered a particular system, you control your ship through 3D space from a third-person point of view. In the sector view, you will be able to choose a warp factor based on your Engineer's skills and the quality of your warp engines.

• 3D space environments have "edges", although they're large enough that if you have two players at different edges of it then they will be unable to detect each other.

• "Infinite exploration", with new worlds constantly being created by the Genesis system. Star Trek Online has embraced the concept of Genesis as a method to generate planets and systems that no one has seen before. The core concept of Genesis in Star Trek Online is to create places for you to go without requiring hours of art and development time for each location. In a lot of ways, when Cryptic thinks of Genesis they think of the Holodeck computer.

• Technology and knowledge acquired through exploration will be "funneled back" to your faction. What faction benefits more from a civilization depends on how much "favor" they have with it.

• Travel time will be "semi-realistic". There will be transwarp conduits and wormholes to help you traverse long distances faster.

• You cannot enter warp at a whim within a star system; impulse is the norm. You can warp between planets within a system, however.

• The environment will be built to encourage socialization; for instance, some travel routes will be better than others, thus increasing player density through those.

• You can name stars and planets you discover.

• The rank of Admiral will be attainable.

• Within a fleet you can "pull your resources" to create various structures such as mining plants and space stations, enabling you to build better ships to "be handed out to the rest of the fleet". "Some things can only be accomplished by a lot of people working together."

• Although players in Fleets will likely end up establishing some sort of chain of command, there will probably not be game mechanics in place for ordering other players to perform certain tasks.

• Fleets will have "basically any of the guild mechanics that you are used to".

• The Bajoran Wormhole is in the game, and you can explore the inside of it.

• There will be different types of tricorders, and how you can use them depends on you character's abilities.

• There will be "all sorts of medals and accolades that you can achieve by exploration."

• There are some very big creatures on the ground, and even larger ones in space.

Thank you for finding that information Mr. Summers. It has already given myself, and I'm sure others, greater insight into the game in the aspects that matter most to the fleet.

I've quoted two of the items of most interest. The first confirms that working together as a fleet will certainly yield its advantages. It will be interesting to see how it is actually implemented in gameplay (if there will be automatic contribution of resources from members of the fleet or if they will have to 'volunteer' what they gain themselves). I'll say this right now, don't be greedy people, it's in your benefit to contribute to the fleet so you will get a bigger and better ship.

The second brings up a good point that I was hoping to see. I view everyone as equals in this fleet. I would like decisions to be made by the members with some people in place to execute those decisions. The first member of that executive part is myself of course, with anticipation that more will follow based on need. There is going to have to be some sort of system implemented of who is allowed to make the decision to spend fleet resources on building a base or such, and once that system becomes clear then I will be asking for candidates to step up, judging suitability, and placing people in those roles.

I"m very excited at the opportunity to lead a skilled and driven fleet that will succeed at whatever mission or challenge is assigned or attempted. I will see to it that one of the finest fleet bases in starfleet is constructed, so that the finest fleet in the Federation can be brought together and equipped to handle the mission of exploration we seek. Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest so far and I look forward to making Explorers fleet a reality come game time.

(if there will be automatic contribution of resources from members of the fleet or if they will have to 'volunteer' what they gain themselves).

My guess is that based on 1) The mention of cooperative creation of mining planets (resources) & 2) Different ship classes have different cargo capabilities, that the requirements must be very large to build anything substantial.

So, if you had an Intrepid class and I had an Excalibur class my ships holds will be able to contribute more resources in a single trip.

This is a long way of saying that I think it will be automatic but variable based on our ship choices. To me this makes a lot of sense, you may have the better science vessel, but I can provide better fleet support.

crandall31
07-02-2009, 08:58 PM
Hopefully we will not end up having to do dedicated mining runs to gather resources and our ships will just 'pick them up' along the way. Or maybe our ships can do that sort of thing on 'auto pilot' while we are offline. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Let us know if you are able to find anything more on that topic Mr. Summers.

I came across a thread that claimed to have evidence of a possible map used in the game. I didn't put much stock in it until I saw the screenshot for myself.

During the Day as a Dev podcast, someone noticed on the wall behind Zink was a star trek universe map.

Here's a link to the screenshot: http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk171/Neo-wolf06/542235.jpg

The original video is actually for Champions Online, but Zink (Executive Producer) makes an appearance. The screenshot was taken @ 3:32. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKNKiDiBLRs&feature=channel_page

This particular map is the most detailed that has been released. I suspect that it's not used directly, but more so as a reference. If anything more develops from this I'll report back.

Very interesting find, Mr. Summers. I'm wondering if this may be a map previously published, unrelated to STO. There is some faint memory of something like a "Star Trek map of the universe" from my younger days. Maybe it came with the Star Trek Encyclopedia at some point. But nevertheless, good job on the research. No doubt they are making an effort to duplicate what is already established for the layout of the Trek universe.

You are correct. I did a little hunting and I found that this map came from "Star Trek Star Charts" (http://www.ucip.org/science/newmaps/).

The communities best guess is that this map lends itself to the 2D "Sector space" that's been discussed. Here's an except from a dev chat from April that supports the theory.

"Our 'overworld'... currently we're playing with a 2d representation of what we call 'sector space' which is kind of our overworld universal map. It's the map that you go between star systems, various points of interest, you know like Star Base One, you fly out to the different places that you'll be exploring, the different places that you need to go on your latest episode.. so it's an overworld where you actually see other players, you see everybody else in warp space, this is kind of where you are going at warp ten... doing your general travel between places, but right now its 2D with just a little bit of 3D movement to make it look cool."

I wanted to address an interesting addtion to the game that was just revealed. The Klingon Vo'Quv (http://www.startrekonline.com/node/320) class has been detailed, and is perhaps even more formidable than the Romulan Scimitar. They have mentioned that this will serve many as the flagship of their fleets. While I do believe it will take great time and resources to obtain this ship, I would have to think that there will be a federation counter to it. I believe even the mighty Prometheus class would be incapable of handling this monster on its own.

I am excited at the potential to command such a presence in space, and I hope that with cooperation Explorers fleet will be able to construct an almost "mobile base" such as this from which to support the fleet's endevors. It will be interesting to see if one individual will command it or if it will be a fleet resource like a base. Also, the addition of fighters will bring an interesting new aspect to gameplay. You will have to make sure that your ship is either maneuverable or has a full sphere of phaser arcs to account for this threat.

Thoughts and comments are welcome.

With a suggestion by Mr. Summers, I am making an official call out to the fleet for submission of a fleet logo. I would like to review many submissions and either choose one or ask the bset designer to make some modifications. I can do the simple image grab off the web and add some word art in, but that's about it (see my avatar). I'd like to see some conservative styling, possibly incorporating the federation logo with "Explorers Fleet" slightly stylized and incorporated. Also, I believe a motto such as "To Boldly Go" would look nice if added. Use of the STO logo could work also. Please post links in the thread to your creations or if you feel uncomfortable with displaying to the world, PM me. I look forward to your submissions.

Some quick questions about the new fleet logo:

How large should the image be? (pixels x pixels or some such)
Should there be a background picture behind the logo, or simply a solid color?
Is this to be used as an avatar for fleet members or simply a logo that will go on our future website?

Let me see if I can provide a bit more clarity. While re-reading the April dev article (http://vault.ign.com/View.php?view=e....detail&id=249), I noticed a section regarding the ability to add fleet related emblems to our ships.

Here's the exact quote:

"I think that they are definitely customizable options in terms of trim color, material color, decals on the ship, your emblem trying to get.. trying to get a fleet emblem on your ship. Instantly recognizable, that’s really up tot he fleet to pick something that really does stand out I guess."

Unfortunately we may not have the necessary specifics until the game is available. I'll continue to scan for any additional info and report back. I'd suggest at this point we cast a large net and refine any designs as we learn more.

Welcome Nate. My gratitude to our members for extending the greeting.

As far as the emblem/logo, it can be an imaged background such as you've submitted. The size should be made fairly large but scaleable for use in a variety of ways. This could mean a high res version for the hulls of the ships, lower res for avatars, and whatever is appropriate for the future website/forum.

I'm liking what I see in the two submitted thus far. The whole "new day dawns on a strange, new world" flavor is appealing.

If we can manage it, maybe the font can match that of the STO logo (the "old is new again" thing they have going with the original style font with new colors)

Also, if we use the Cochrane Delta maybe we can give the blue one used in the STO logo a go and see how it looks.

I'd like to tie in characterisitcs that reflect us as a fleet in the game STO, a member of the Federation, but unique to us as Explorers fleet.

Let's run with these ideas for now and see what happens. Discussion is encouraged. Great job so far.

One thing that's been bothering me is the available space on a ships hull for our emblems. If you look at this screenshot (http://uploads.startrekonline.com/screen_sto_0019.jpg), there's really not a lot of room there.

Might be good to keep this in mind.

I would really prefer to see everyone in the fleet display the same logo when it comes to the ships. In forums, I don't have any problem with people expressing their involvement with the fleet in their own tasteful way. That can be customizing an avatar or something in the signature. I hope this will be acceptable to everyone.

And a new thought on the logo development. Maybe simpler is better when it comes to it (See Summers's post above). I am referencing the logos of the different races (Federation, Klingon, Borg, Romulan, etc.). They are relatively simple but unique with their own symbolism. This is good for standing out even when shown in smaller sizes. So for example maybe taking the STO logo and replacing the large text with "Explorers fleet" and possibly doing a motto in the other, smaller font. But it's only an example (and something that is beyond my skills to implement in a design without fonts, etc.). I also like the idea of blue as being representative of the Federation.

Also, if anyone is needing ideas I see there are several other fleets that have logos. Maybe some inspiration can come there.

Keep the discussion coming, we want to work out as many issues now as we can so come game day we are ready to shine as a unified and refined fleet that sets an example for all.

In light of Crandall's suggestions/observations, I submit yet another potential logo. It's basically just the STO logo with our fleet name, although not EXACTLY the same. I'm still getting used to photoshop and I didn't get the coloring or font perfect. Anywho, here it is:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff220/mandrew_bucket/explorerslogo2.jpg

On a side note, I can always make simple modifications such as color changes, position of text, and sizing. So keep coming with suggestions!

In the design engineering profession, we have what we call "Design Visualization" folks. These people take our ideas and artistically create them so we can see how something might turn out before doing a full design on it. This work on the logos reminds me of that.

I want to compliment Mr. Shephard on his latest work. It is very close to what I was looking to see. And with that said, I think I have to back off a bit on how much association we give to the STO logo. Also, if the concensus is that the motto is corny then we can dump it. But instead, maybe just change it to "Boldly Go" which I think has a much wider range of possible contexts as it relates to the fleet name and imagry of the logo. The latin is also an idea. And come to think of it, I know one that comes from a spaceflight memorial patch for NASA. "Semper Exploro" - always exploring. I think a poll on mottos is in order once I get the forum up and running.

Now that I have the names in the font, I can work on some more concepts. Let's try combining the name in the STO font and colors coupled with something exploration or federation themed. But remember, simplicity is valued so that it shows up well on the ship hulls.

Excellent work, keep it up!

I had the idea of using the arrowhead "swoosh" symbol that starfleet historically used in its logo at one point (http://rigilkent-online.com/EarthStarfleet.gif) and then incorporating our fleet name somewhere on the design or some latin like "semper exploro," when I came upon the following discovery:

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/File:Earth_Starfleet_Command_flag.svg

Apparently the flag of starfleet command in the 22nd century had the exact design I was thinking of!

I still think the swoosh would be cool as part of our fleet insignia, but we would have to add in some unique touches to make it our own. Thoughts?

The path we have historically taken is for the recruits to come to us. I approve of any efforts to recruit those looking for a fleet whose goals are close to that of our fleet's.

My thoughts were that we can start off wtih whatever fleet we gain through our presence here on the forums and then once the game is launched we would quickly pick up those we interact with in our travels who seek the same goal of exploration. But I am certainly not against a small bit of recruitment where we pick up someone that just hasn't made their way to our thread yet, but would join had they known of us. I really don't feel like we should 'force' it on someone who isn't really committed to our goals. So I would suggest that a potential recruit be invited to read our thread then express their interest if they would be so interested.

As always, thoughts welcome public or privately.

Where are we going to go when the game is up? like, the gamma or delta ect.? First I think we should get the fleet together and split them into equal groups maybe 5 or 10 people in each group. maybe more depends how many places were planning on going to but, I think we should have at least 1 medical ship per group and 1 science, tactical etc. so we are able to protect ourselfs from enemies, since we will have small ships to start off with.

I apologize if you were not given a direct reply. The fleet has been preoccupied with the emblem as of late and I forgot to address your post.

I don't believe the game will have capacity for you to create a custom class of ship. Now with that said, there will be a great deal of customization of the base classes that they give you, so if your design is based off a class that will be in the game then you may be able to get it to something very close to your design.

Welcome aboard, I look forward to working with you.

I think to start off with we will all want to work on exploring the ins and outs of the game and federation space. Once everyone has gotten on board and settled in, we can come together to formulate a mission plan. I'm sure each mission that is either asssigned to us or choosen will require a different approach, but I imagine a standard exploration detail will emerge where certain types of ships will be assigned to more standard missions.

Of course, the high profile missions will see the flaghship leading the way, with the best of the fleet on my wing :p :D

Bottom line is we will have to see what types of mssions come up and we will make the call as to who gets assigned at that time. I'm sure everyone will want to feel out the game to start off with though. Everyone will have their time to shine and do great things, I'll see to that.

Great question

I am looking forward to the games release and when it does come out I will be more than happy to join up in your fleet and boldly go were none have gone before,

I’m not sure what ship I’ll have but I’m hoping for an Excalibur Class, but what ever I do end up picking I hope it will contribute to the fleet.

But until then, Link8909 out.

Let me know!

I think it's great! (granted, I did find the original picture, so I'm somewhat biased :D, but I think it's awesome). One thing that drew me to it originally was that it carries a striking similarity to one of NASA's logos- http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/25/Nasa-logo.gif I love the idea of paying homage to space exploration's "past" while still keeping a bold, futuristic design.

P.S. I don't mean to be America-centric, and I don't mean to alienate fleet members outside the US with my allusions to NASA. I am well aware of, and greatly admire, the accomplishments of other space agencies such as the ESA, JAXA, and the Russian Federal Space Agency. I just think that NASA has a great logo!

P.P.S. Interestingly enough, the Russian Federal Space Agency has a logo that incorporates a symbol very similar to the Cochrane delta!http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9f/RKA_Logo.svg :p

P.P.P.S. This is a really long post, and I'm done now.

Captain Crandall et al:

I haven't checked in since April and it seems I've missed quite a bit since then. (I'm supposed to receive email alerts but it doesn't seem to be working.) I'm glad to see such activity on this thread and really look forward to registering on our very own forum.

In regards to some earlier topics: I plan on entering into the field of science and my ship interests are open-ended at this point.

I agree, it's far too early to discuss alliances. In fact, it's too soon to talk about missions and how we're going to operate as a fleet until we have more information.

The logo idea sounds great. I've got an idea kicking around in my head so as soon as I get a moment I'll try to get it out there with the rest of the great submissions.

It's great to see everyone here! Looking forward to working with all of you in the name of exploration.

After reading through the forum I had a go at putting together a logo for the fleet.

http://link8909.deviantart.com/art/Design-Explorers-Fleet-Logo-132730133

I done it on windows paint so It is basic, the silver outline is where the fleet name and motto was suppose to go but I wasn't able to put it in there.

Perhaps any one who has better editing skills can use this as a guide line and improve upon it.

Hope this helps out.

I see that the fleet is indeed still alive, and my e-mail notification of posts seems to have died instead. Weird...

At any rate, an update on the forum. The work I promised to do on it stalled out as deadlines for design work at my job has picked up and I've been working some good old OT. Nonetheless, I intend to get that up and running in the next few weeks so we can start getting some organization to our posts (and just plain have a home of our own).

If there aren't any objections, I'd like to stick with the style of logo Mr. Shephard had found in the "old" starfleet flag with the motto and make minor modifications to include the fleet name and possibly change around the colors. I think it fits the criteria of a simple logo that is very symbolic (as he has since pointed out) and it will look very good on the fleet ships themselves. I am grateful for the inputs on the logos and the hard work that went into their research and creation.

My appreciation for the motto comes from the following NASA patch:
http://www.spaceflightnowstore.com/ww/catalog/popup_image.php?pID=178&osCsid=9312dcdc90b4134a5764aa887329479a

This patch represents the astronauts that have died on the 3 fateful missions. Besides such a sobering fact, the statement is very true to the core value of Explorers fleet, "Always Exploring".

With that said, please provide suggestions for colorization or styles, either in description or in the form of a modified image. As you can see, I added my own touch to it as shown in my avatar by simply adding the fleet name in the same color blue to the top in a serif font. I have come to expect much more from the talented others in the fleet than my simple job in paint, so I'm looking forward to the results. I'm not sure if I'm sold yet on the yellow background, hence my call for color suggestions.

Hopefully I will have some time to work on the forum soon. My desktop PC at home is coming up on a significant overhaul over the next couple of weeks (upgraded CPU, replacement of bad motherboard, new case) that will reuqire an OS wipe and rebuild but I'll try and keep up here using other means. I'm prepping my machine in anticpation of STO, as well as some other games.

Keep it up fleet, I like what I'm seeing and I hope you do as well. If you don't, as always please provide suggestions.

Good Day Fleet,
Mr Crandall, the Logo in your avatar is quite good, it is simple yet speak volumes, kudos to all involved in its design.

I have been getting the weekly updates on the forum thread so no issues there. (just and FYI)

I want to make the comment that although we have no idea as to how we will have to gain the resources needed to build and supply our fleet, I Captain Remy, pledge to volunteer a certain amount of time to this task should the need arise, there is always times when playing an MMO that friends are not online to join in tasks or you do not have the hours needed to catalog a star system, and those will be the times to do the things needed to make the fleet run and grow, again, should it be needed, I also challenge my fellow captains to take this pledge, for to do great things one must have great support.

Now, having been a COH player for some time, the "Super Group Bases", were funded through members having to earn prestige for the group, in the new Champions Online, the Heroes earn "Resources" for completed missions and defeating foes, with this as a guide, I don't see Cryptic making its player do something as boring as mining like that of the game " EVE", but it maybe any number of different methods, and should it require a dedicated moment of time to complete, I will put some time to the cause.

I look forward to the new forum where we can spread our wings a bit and branch out in to other discussions, trying to cover so many bases with one thread is tough.

To my Fellow Captains, I take my leave of you now, too all, peace and long life...

but instead of UFP on it you have the new symbol of Star Trek Online...

Well I don't mind if I change my profession to something else, I think the reason there are alot of engineers is because they all want to be 'a miracle worker' (and to be honest so do I :D).
When we do have a full roster we can see who wants to do what and then have a sort out so that the fleet has an even amount of all professions.

mandrew

While it might be convenient to have the fleet equally divided into groups of science, engineering, and tactical, I don't think it would be wise to require people to take a specific focus just to fill a quota. For example, if Johnny Startrek wants to be engineering but we have 20 people in engineering, 10 in science, and 5 in tactical, we shouldn't make Johnny change to tactical just to fill slots. While it might be convenient for the rest of us, I imagine it would make Johnny's game experience pretty lame. Now, if someone doesn't really care which path he/she takes, I agree that it's reasonable to suggest to this person that he/she fill a position we most vitally need.

As for me, I plan on having a Tactical focus. This seems to be the fleet's minority, but there's not necessarily anything wrong with that. I'm fine with having my help be in high demand :D

Like if we could go to Veridian III and find the wreckage of the Enterprise-D or Kirk's grave, or travel to Talos IV (in secret thou, I think it's still a death penalty for going there:eek:), or even Deneb IV and see a new Farpoint Station, or even Wolf 359 and find the derby of the thirty-nine Starships that were destroyed there:(.

I appreciate the welcome, Captain! It is good to hear from you.
I will also be participating in the Closed Beta. Can hardly stand the wait, but for anyone playing Champions, don't hesitate to PM me and we can team up.

Cpt. Crandell and associated officers:

It is with great pleasure that I see such an enthusiastic group of officers coming together for what, in the end, is the true purpose of Starfleet: the exploration of our galaxy. To seek the unknown, to uncover all that is covered, to learn who and what is out there and to extend our hands in friendship.

In the last forty years, we have had our complacency challenged time and again. From once occasional conflicts with the Tzenkethii or the Cardassians to the horrors of the Borg or the Dominion War, followed by threats, challenges and sometimes untold destruction, we have sometimes had our convictions tested. More and more we use terms like 'Escorts' or 'Tactical Cruisers' to hide what so much of Starfleet has become: warships, meant for battle, to defend our Federation and punish our enemies.

We are meant to be better than this. We can be better than this.

I and my ship will stand at your side, if you will have us. Those much of what we might do will be solitary work, charting and scanning, starmapping and communicating, I would be honored to join a fleet with like minded Captains and their crews, to assist when needed, commiserate when required, and socialize where possible. Together, we can stand for what we have always believed in: knowledge. Friendship. And most of all, Federation.

E. Tirkoff,
Captain
U.S.S. Borysthenis

(Also in the Closed Beta, for the record.)

Hell all,

My name is Beavis from the United States. I'm very eagered to join up with a fleet as I plan on enjoying this game as soon as it comes out like all of you. This group of explorers seems very interesting and active to say the least.

Haven't been around here much to say how things work around, but this would be a great chance to find out.

Welcome Captain Tirkoff, I see you share in the great vision of a fleet that remains true to the core values of the Federation and the principles upon which it was founded. I invite you to join up under the flag of Explorers fleet.

Also welcome Beavis, a newcomer to the world of STO.

I look forward to working with each of you.

Good morning. How is your fleet doing today?

From news updates and video's we are getting a good picture of what to expect in game and what we can find and go to, like visit Deep Space Nine or find the Guardian Of Forever, but there is one thing that has not yet been mentioned, is there going to be an Enterprise?

I think that the Enterprise-E would have been decommission after 40 odd years of serves, but still, would StarFleet have commission another to continued the voyages? And if so what class will it be? Who is the captain? And if there is an Enterprise, will it be controlled by CrypticStudios, or an NPC (non-player character).

I'm sure there will be lot's of people who will want to call there ship Enterprise, but which will be the pride and joy of StarFleet?

In other matters, I watch the Press Demo of Online at GamesCon 2009 on YouTube and I notice some similarity's to the ship combat of Online and Star Trek Legacy, such as the W A S D keys to move the ship, having to maneuver the ship within your firing arc to strike your opponent's weak side, and the ability to divert power form systems.

The "path to 2409" articles have been mentioning the mission of Captain Data's Enterprise E. Once we get to 2409, I guess we'll have to see if it is still around. I doubt it will be the last ship to carry the name, and I would have to believe that if one ever did run into it that it would be computer controlled. Also, I would have to believe that the game will have some restricted names, like Enterprise. But this is speculation and we will have to see.

In other news, I'm working on my unreliable desktop these days. There was the possibility that Capt. Remy was going to set up a forum for us, but I haven't heard from him recently so I'll try and wrap up what I was prevously working on before too long.

That's all I've got. Seems like things have quieted down a bit. Everyone is back in school I suppose. Or everyone is giving me the silent treament until we have a proper forum up. Either is understandable.

Applications for closed Beta testing are out there. I won't be participating for three reasons: 1) I really don't want to spoil the game for me. 2) I don't want a head start on my fellow explorers. 3) I learned from the Lord of the Rings beta testing that I'm not very good at it. That is, I play the game alright, but I stink at submitting problem tickets. I just never make the time to submit screen shots, run DX diag, and all the other stuff that goes with it. I shall remain patient for the real deal.

Good evening fleet. I've come to provide another update on some items.

First off is the forums. Between my job, getting into a masters program, and trying to maintain some time with my friends, I haven't had any opportunities to work on the forum. I invite any member that would be interested in setting up and maintaining a forum for the fleet to send me a PM with your background and maybe even a sample of your work if available. I think it would be prudent at this point to try and have someone else that might have a bit of free time (or more experience) take that on.

Next is the beta. I've put in my application. I hope to be accepted so that not only can details be reported back to the fleet, but I can see how the fleet system will work so that when the real time comes, we are that far ahead. I don't know how the beta process goes for MMOs but maybe they will reset the stats prior to final release so that the playing field is level. I guess we will see.

I apologize for the forums not being up yet. Come another month or so my hectic pace at work should slow back down then I put some energy back into fleet development. My gaming desktop is in the process of being rebuilt so hopefully I should have a great machine once game time rolls around. Hope all is well, I hope to hear from some of you in the near future.

Great news everyone, I have completed set up of the forum! I am looking for someone (or a few people) to "beta test" the forum for me. PM me and I'll give you the forum's address. Thanks for the help, and if all goes well I'll be posting the address for everyone here soon.

Welcome to the fleet Captain Moyer. I encourage you to fill out the application to the fleet once the fleet's official forum is online here in the near future.

On another note, do we have any takers for testing out the forum? I'd like a few existing fleet members to give it a once over. PM me for the address.

Correction: I received no notification that I had PMs, so I caught that after I posted this message. We have 2 testers so far, we'll see how it turns out.

Captain Crandall, if you're still accepting applications, I would greatly enjoy the opportunity to be a member of your fleet. It sounds like exactly what I've been looking for.

Regards,
Captain Thoqvaahl zh'Dra of Andor.

I have nothing interesting to say, just making an appearance to notify everyone I'm still alive. Classes start up again pretty soon, so I've been somewhat occupied, but I lurk on the forums unseen pretty regularly.

I must say all the news about an official forum is quite exciting. I look forward to seeing it in finalized form.

I've had a few people go through the forum and haven't had any big flaws pointed out, so I'll go ahead and open it up to everyone. Please make your way over and register as a forum member, then go to the Recruitment topic to apply to be a member of the fleet. I hope to see you over there soon.
