Does anyone know how to use stardates. No well I do! First you need 8 for the year 2008, 07 for the month of July, 28 for the day, and then in military time the hour and minute. So it should be YMMDD.HHMM. So the time I did this is 80728.2339

unfortunately thats not how they got the stardates in the show....First number is the season(at least in TNG) so all stardates are fictional.

Actually there is no real way of getting any meaningful stardates. In TNG there was some order to it, but a lot of the time most of the numbers were random and resulted in episodes having stardates that were lower than the stardates of previous episodes. But there are some websites that will "calculate" the stardate for you, you just have to decide which one you like the best.

Stardates are, supposedly, used to somehow compensate for the complications that a space-fairing civilization must face when dealing with spacetime geometry, such as time flowing at different rates and simultaneity differing between different systems. There's not much real science behind it, but I suppose it helps with the suspension of belief.
I recommend Memory Alpha's article on the subject (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Stardate) and in particular the external links they list - to anybody who's interested in learning more.
