Anyone ever play TradeWars 2002 on a BBS YEARS ago?

I can remember dialing up the local BBSs here with my 2400 bps modem just to play TradeWars... I actually still Telnet into some BBSs just to get my fix. :)

Now they are making a graphical MMO Trade Wars called, "TradeWars Rising"

Interesting nonetheless...

Oh how I miss thee golden days of BBSs!

I didn't play on the old BBSs, but I do have a valid TWGS (TradeWars Game Server) license and I run a game now and then off of my Windows box at home for some friends. I've been thinking about setting it up again (especially with my Trek races/ships that I had created). I just need the time, sadly.

*Raises hand* I and about 5 of my friends were all over TradeWars on BBSs. We would spend hours looking for perfect 'dead ends' to build our strongholds. Was always sad when the enemy used genesis devices to put so many planets in one sector that our cool ones got destroyed.

Interesting to hear about a MMO Trade Wars. Have to give that a look!

Nothing like setting your empire back in a 4 sector dead end and putting mines and fighters everywhere... I love this game.

I remember. I used to run a 3 node TAG board for awhile back in the early 90's and had TW2002 running. Very popular game it was.

Is this a day to day game so you can only do something once a day?

I'll break it down pretty simply.

It is based on "x" amount of turns 'per day'. There are usually anywhere from 2000 - 5000 sectors, each sector taking an 'x' amount of turns (depending on the ship size, could be 1-10 turns).

It's pretty complex for being a text based game, and was pretty ahead of its time for being around so long ago. :)

But you can do a lot with 1,000 turns. Usually the first thing you'll want to do is go to "Terra" sector, get some people to colonize your planet, do that a bunch of times, build a citadel... from there you can do so much.

Some games also have unlimited turns, others unlimited turns but you only can play for so long each day (an hour, etc). Each is a way to try and provide ways of giving all players the same chances.

Now I'm wanting to scour my old hard drives to find my Trek mod... Maybe I'll get a game or two going in the next couple weeks.

All I need to do is find my Trek mods (had some Star Wars ones, but they weren't as 'fleshed out'). I already found my TWGS key. Of course, I need to think of where I'd host the game. The only Windows system I could possibly do would be through a rather poor DSL line at my house... I'd be open to suggestions on that.

I use to play with the Ferangi, Borg and tons of others. TW2002 is Star Trek enough too. ;)

You could host it on a webiste. THey have it so you log onto a site and it will telnet and you don't have to worry about people logging into your PC.

So long as the TWGS software can run on the server, yea. All of the servers I own are Linux based, so I might have to consider running a Windows emulator to do such a thing.

And yes, it was Trek enough, but I wanted more. ;) I added in Klingons, Starfleet, the Borg, and had a framework ready for Cardassians and Romulans. The Klingons, Starfleet, and the Borg each had 6-8 ships, and I also had included one or two more ships that people could buy. It was definitely fun.

I'm pretty sure you don't need a PC to run a server. I've played some TradeWars via a website. It was the same game, just used your browser to log in.

You might use your browser to login and play, but you'd still need the game server up and running somewhere that you can connect to. TWGS is only built for Windows based machines, as far as I know.

Hmm...

Anyone have an old Pentium 60Mhz floating around?

As I said, I've got a box at home I could run it on. I just would hate to just run it on my DSL.
