Because they folded and went out of business?

Most companies tend to abandon the lion share of their projects just prior to, or at some point shortly after that particular milestone.

The more I read toward the end, the more I think their goal all along was to embezzle development funds and run for it.

I'm guessing the fact that their flagship MMO Gods & Heroes was suspended right before release had a lot to do with it.

I heard that their publisher yanked the funding out from under them. Fortunes of war.

Ya they lost the license because there was legal issues regarding Gods & Heroes.

Yeah, licensing issues and money issues make for a nasty combination. Regretfully for PE, it cost them too much.

Well, I'm glad that what happened did happen. If anyone can break the "All ST games suck" curse Cryptic can.

Then again, I had the same thought when Bethesda got the ST license too

Hey now, not ALL Star Trek games suck. Star Trek Armada II was a pretty decent game. Not groundbreaking in any particular way but it certainly was funny playing a strategy game with Star Trek ships.

PE was so broke that they had to use the forums at the official Star Trek site. Those forums are still up I believe too.

I believe they are, it's going to be very weird with new official forums replacing what were essentially old official forums...

I feel like this is for the best since the last pieces of news before the belly-up were bad IMO. Not too often I get to be happy about someone going bankrupt.

The how's and why's aren't too important imo, I'm just glad that they lost it.... their announcement they were going to re-focus and aim at the casual market really had me worried about the franchise.

Ran out of money.

Making an MMO takes a huge sum of up-front cash with zero income for the duration of development. Gods and Heroes running over budget wiped them out. Forming P2 was a shady attempt to protect the STO rights, but Paramount would have none of that... and thankfully so.
I'm totally psyched about Jack Emmert and Co tackling this game.

Its actually a comedy of errors, one that started with one of GnH's main investers running into money problems, this caused them to drop out and thus left GnH without the funds to release (insanely sucky since teh game was so close to been finished). Once GnH went down, thier investers went after blood and targeted PE's other project STO, which in all fairness I believe was crap since that project had completely different investers. Due to court orders and the like this caused major issues for PE.

However, PE soldired on, one of its benchmarks was to get the publisher for STO finalised, this was an invester benchmark and thus very important since if it wasn't reached some investers would pull out. The publisher was found, but at the last minute (a week before), they pulled out, which they did with a few other companies too, not just PE, due to finacial reasons of thier own. This left PE with no money and thus they had no chance of continueing, which led to Cryptic getting thier hands on the assets.

As you can see by the screenshots, the PE models all got transferred, however the game engine didn't, which is pretty obvious since the screenshots lack the polish they had in the PE engine, from what I can recall when I saw them.

The tragedy in all of this is that STO would be in beta now if PE hadn't gone under. On the bright side, all of PE's work wasn't in vain since Cryptic is using it, also, Cryptic has the funds to give this game the extra treatment it deserves (hopefully).

I don't know, but honestly, at this point, I just want the thing made.

Why did it take so long to sell the rights to Cryptic?

They sold the rights quite quicly actually, its just Cryptic has been getting all the behind the scenes stuff sorted out before announcing they have it, best they know what they are doing afterall before having 6000 people register on thier forums asking questions they can't answer :-)

Yikes! From what I was reading, it was on PE's end. But hey! If Cryptic is going to do it, and do a GOOD job, then I'm happy.

I think you misunderstand what I'm saying, PE passed on thier rights to Cryptic after they hit finacial trouble, the deal was done within a few weeks of PE closing, which was a rela´tivly quick transfer, it had nothing to do with CBS or the like, since PE had purchased the rights, so it was upto PE to either give them up or pass them along with thier assets, I say this as many people seem to assume CBS had a say in all of this, which they didn't, they just sell the rights and thats it.
