Im gonna be honest with you man, if this game is out before Spring of 2010, I will be totally surprised.

So I tell ya what, start saving now, or telling your loved ones you want a new comp. Your best bet is to get a new rig for a game like this and play it with some better quality components in a new rig. Dont use some old out dated rig to play an awesome MMO like this.

Just my 2 cents, as I am getting a new comp for this game for sure.

At the very least a few upgrades may be in order.

Personally, I will be going into STO with a brand new quad core process with a minimum of 4GBs RAM and 1GB Vid Card.

My computer runs Age of Conan fine... so I assume if it is still working when this comes out, I will be fine.

Age of Conan is the current game I'm playing. I can tell you it's not always about your PC. The developers have to optimize for SLI, Mult-Core Processors and DirectX 10.

My computer specs are:
MOBO: eVGA Nforce 780i Chipset Mainboard with a long list of goodies.
CPU: Intel E8500 3.4Ghz CPU Overclocked to 4.2Ghz
Memory: Corsair Dominator 2x 2GB DDR2 PC8500
HDD: Western Digital Velociraptor 10,000RPM SATA
Video: TWO XfX 9800 GTX 512MB Cards OC'd slightly running in SLI mode.

Now with all that said a pretty cool PC.
Still, Age of Conan runs like CRAP on my PC.

WHY? No optimization for SLI, Having SLI Actually cripples the game.

No Optimiztion for Multi-Core Processors, it seems like Funcom only uses single core processors at their development labs. I have constant freezing and lagging when the game get's lost in between the CPUs.

No DirectX 10. I saw the previews and they all had DX10. Game isn't as pretty as promised.

Why am I saying this? Not to compain about AoC, cuz it's a cool game despite it's flaws. All I'm saying is your PC matters SQUAT if the game developers don't have all their ducks in a row. Is Cryptic focusing on all these problems to ensure a smoother gameplay across platforms?

I have an 8 core personally that I hioe to last me a few years. that i can expand to 32 gb ram and 4 SLI cards but Warp Core is right on the noney it is to early to say what the game might or might not need at this point. If Screenshots are any indication at all though, it looks intensive.

Just to take a guess a recommended would be
2.4 to 2.8 ghz Dual core
1.5gig ram XP and 3gig for Vista
8800 GTX - cause I am hoping you can see the whole solar system in a 3d view
4 to 6 gig hdd space

Min would be
2.0ghz Dual Core
1.0gig RAM XP and 2gig for Vista
6800gtx
4 to 6 gig hdd space

When STO launches I will definately be purchasing a new pc. If this game stays on par then I'm not even going to put myself through the mess of playing it on an older machine. I want to see the stars in all their glory! 8)

I think its going to be a lot bigger than that. Prolly some were around 10 for minimum. Warcraft takes up 6 GB on my Computer, Eve online takes up close to 3 and this game is going to be both of those combined and some, so be prepared for a huge game

Since the sole mission for this STAR TREK fleet is to understand all living things, the game should be explorable on all computers. So I think good old basic and 64 kB should do the trick (just as commander Gates has predicted years ago).

MMO's want to appeal to the largest audience possible. As such I expect the games visuals to scale mightly from run of the mill system to fully tricked out running far cry on the highest settings fly ass system.

Regardless, I doubt this question is going to be answered anytime soon, way to early in the development process.

They bought engine and a hell out of lot of the world was already done. This game will be about in a year or a year and a half. Have to remember Cryptic bought a lot of the game and its engine along with most of the dev team that was already working on it before hand.

I intend to build a new PC either next month or in October (Nehlem launch) of course with a quad, some nice ram and hopefully a 4870 (possibly 4870X2 if its a october build).

I'm still using an old Pentium 4 with this so I need to really get an upgrade.

Well, either way we will know much more on August 10th when we see the gameplay footage. That will be a big signal on how much progress has really been made.

If it's a 2010 release, it's too early to tell, and to early to buy parts. I'll be pulling my Quad Core CPU by then and upgrading my now new GPU. And from what I'm reading, My fancy 775 board might be useless for upgrade.

But that's because your talking about 2 years - by then a 9800 will be old junk compared to what will be available.. If it comes out by the middle next of nexy year -   your 2.6Ghz duo and 8800GT class machines will handle it just like they handle everything you throw at them now. (you did say minimum)

That's all I want out of my big machine... I'm rockin DDR3 on a Bonetrail MB because it was time for a new board, but the truth is I just want playable framerates like everyone else :D

I hope it's not SOOOO high...

I have a laptop and a desktop and they're both about the same regarding specs...

The desktop is running an 800Mhz Intel with a graphics card, not on-board, simply because the on-board graphics chipset blows chunks... The HDD is ATA and about 200Gb. The graphics card is a VisionTek 7K 64Mb with 3 outs: S-Vid, DVI and SVGA. Also has 4Gb RAM.

My laptop is running an Intel P4M @ 2.5Ghz. Using 2Gb of RAM and an 80Gb HDD. This is running a SiS 652M graphics chipset and runs EVE Online pretty well-- two drawbacks: space is WHITE! and the texts are sometimes illegible and run in streaks.

No matter: I am going to be playing with my laptop for some time... I have friends on EVE and I could convince them to play STO! So that's a HUGE PLUS! :D

I'm not too worried about STO being SUPER-graphics intensive or having CRAPPY animation because of my laptop's crappy gpu. As long as they can support my native 1400x1050x32 color resolution, then I'll be quite satisfied...

IT'S NOT ABOUT THE GRAPHICS-- IT'S ABOUT THE GAME PLAY, THE IMMERSION!
As far as that goes, these screen shots and 'in-game engine' videos could all be a ruse, and we'll be getting a version of "Diablo: Star Trek Edition"...!

UNDERSTAND: This is just speculation-- I'm not telling anyone I know more than these words convey; I'm just stating things I've noticed before with other companies-- and then the VAPORWARE: the game never releases because it was cancelled or put on permanent hiatus or whatever...

Anyway, to regain my footing... I just hope Cryptic will cater to DX9.0c users, since DX10 will be backwards compatible, and that they take their time to include the LCD (least common denominator, not liquid crystal display) of graphics capabilities, and ramp up the GFX to those who possess the higher-end cards/systems.
