Now, I'm a Fed. I know a few of you that get scared by that. But don't let that make y'all fret too much.

My name is Dr. Amy Weaver, Captain and Chief Medical Officer of the USS Kaywinnet Lee and temporary commander of Serenity Rescue Station. We're looking for a few good captains and crew. Not good, necessarily, as in clean, upstanding, A1A Academy wetnoses.

I mean the ones who know how to survive.

Our mission over here at the Station is simple, and well known. We do search and rescue. Some call us angels of mercy, some call us tow truckers. Some call us worse things... at least until they need us. People might not think that's a glory job, or a danger job. They're forgettin' something.

Any ship that got itself in trouble got in trouble for a reason. And nine times out of ten that reason is still going to be out there hanging around when we show up.

So I'm not looking for glory hunters or fake bravado. And I don't care what you were before. Lovable rogue, pig-brained mercenary, toy-obsessed pilot, button-cute greasemonkey or ninja courtesan, that's all behind you if you want the job. Let me worry about the politics, and the criminal records.

All you need to know is how to get your crew out there, get our folks out, and get 'em all home. How, in short, to keep flying when it's all against you.
Because I've been to one side of this 'verse and t'other. And there's no reward, no medal, no payoff, like bringing someone home to their family.

So if you think you can take it, I can dish it out like you've

*CRUNCH* *HISS* *QUEEP* *BLIP*

...what was that?

Did my primary comm array just fall off my gorram station for NO GORRAM REASON?

Hell with it. Call me. If I don't pick up, I'm out there with a welding phaser fixing this myself because... because. Leave a message.

Serenity out.

**MESSAGE TERMINATED: LOCATION DATA FOR SERENITY STATION, SECTOR WH3-D0N ATTACHED**

For those of you who are wondering... yes, this is a call to arms for all Browncoats, Whedonheads and other related geeks out there - and a way of shoehorning the Firefly family values into a cold and clinical Federale-lovin' verse. It's also for anyone who loves playing "support" characters (clerics, engineers, defenders, empaths, etc) and want a guild / SG / fleet affiliation that understands your nature. Though the odd psychopathic phaser-crazed James T. Kirk type is welcome to sign up too.

Would love to hear from all Browncoats out there anyway regardless of if you're signing on for Fleet duty as well.

Let's see what's out there.

Browncoat signing up here, I'm pretty good with a wrench and would love to sign up. Let me know I'll hop a shuttle and help keep your station together. I'm not the best engineer but I get the job done. Have a good one and don't drop your hydrospanners.

I'm interested in signing up. I'm a shuttle pilot based out of K-2 Space Station and really do need to find a better posting as this place is just not rubbing me right. I can pilot a shuttle anywhere it needs to go. I have training in piloting a Oberth class prior to my posting at K-2 Space Station and able to learn the rest if you need me to.

HA! I thought I was on the wrong forum when I read this thread.

It'd be nice to hook up with a bunch of folks that think a friendly fist fight was a past time and not a court marshalling offence.

My name's Chase. I'm an engineer. Or a mechanic. Or some other nickname or title you wanna give me, I don't really mind one way or the other.

I know my way around anythin' that moves. Anythin' don't work the way it should, I'll fix it up good. I can mess about with any gizmo or contraption you throw my way. And when it comes to ships, I keep 'em flying. I love all the birds I have the fortune of sticking a wrench into.

I've got bad experiences with people, especially those folk who expect me to blindly follow commands or orders without letting me toss in my thoughts. That attitude of mine's got me into a few rough spots in my life. But if it comes to helping people, no need to put a gun to my head, I'm willing to do that any day of the week.

Make no mistake there, I a'int the model person that everyone expects everyone else to be. Plenty of folk have it in for me, plenty of folk don't appreciate all the tinkering I do just 'cause I don't put on a smile when I do it.

If you need someone to fix your birds, keep your guns hot, and make sure you got a warm place to sleep at night, I'm your man.

Well, Starfleet etiquette it ain't. But I know things can get a little stuffy on an outback station like ours, and some people just gotta let off steam sometime.

Just keep to the three golden rules, and the one platinum rule.

1. Fists only. No knives, phasers, blasters, bat'leth, tribbles, whatever the hell else you want to throw at each other, it ain't happening. Just fists.

2. Confine it to OB/DECK 4. It's a good arena, as private or public as you like (bets will be taken by Qu'narth at the Second Chance on Deck 5, gold-pressed latinum only, and don't argue the toss over his odds.) Anything happens that could endanger anyone not damn fool enough to fight or the safety of my station or mission, I will come down on you HARD.

3. When a fight ends, it ENDS. This place is too small to keep grudges in.

And the platinum rule:
If I have to explain any of my rules to you again, Sailor, with you on the other side of the TransAlu glass and my thumb on the EMERGENCY AIRLOCK PURGE buttion, you should have damn well listened the first time.

PS: Jon: pierogi are very welcome on board. And do not underestimate the power of a the skillet.

hands Jazz a stack of welding plates, a welding phaser and jerks thumb towards the Leaning Comm Tower Of Pisa

...thaddaway.

OOC: Seriously, I have no idea what fleet/guild roles there are until the gorram game comes out, kids, and we get some details confirmed. However, a loose alliance of lunatic Whedonhead pilots who (grudgingly) run search and rescue and tow/beam bravura idiots out of dangerous situations, thus giving us an "outlaw angels" reputation, would be right on the money. Keep to the code: No-one on our crew gets left behind. And if you're in trouble, you're going to want to be on our crew.

Until then, let's use the tools the Devs have given us - as well as the inspiration of His Great Purple Fluffy Easily-Distractedness, (http://whedonesque.com) may his name be praised and WGA fees be paid forever . Let's have fun with this, make our plans, tell some stories. And let our little band of awesome see what's out there.

EDIT: PS - thanks for all the positive commentary so far. I do have ideas for a proper RP thang over on the Holodeck, but sleep is also important to me, being human. However, to begin with...

FLAG CARRIER
The USS Kaywinnet Lee is a remodelled Intrepid-class (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Intrepid_class) vessel, capable of both warp and atmospheric flight. The Intrepid-class became the favoured vessel for the Rapid Deployment Force's Recovery Squadron in 2375, towards the end of the Dominion War.

It rapidly became clear that The Dominion did not respect the status of hospital ships, hunting and striking them in preference to other vessels to increase crew attrition rates and attract the wrath of other Federation vessels.

The refitted Intrepids - known as Valkyries - replaced every luxury and a sizeable amount of cargo space with medical loadouts, rendering it capable of comfortably supporting up to 48 critical patients and enable a rapid throughput of minor injuries. The mess hall was also extended to provide shelter for refugees and recovered crew, while the tractor beam array was beefed up to enable low-warp towing of much larger vessels. Where a longer-term deployment is possible, the Valkyries tend to land and deploy a full field hospital setup under and around the main body of the vessel.

Between their small size, high speed and exceptional maneuverability, the Intrepids made much better work of ducking into a system under the nose of the enemy and extracting personnel to the nearest Starbase than the cumbersome Olympics ever could - while their heavier armament could effectively deter any pursuer fast enough to keep up.

FLAG OFFICER
Dr. Amelia Weaver earned three special mentions in the Academy: the highest grade ever achieved by a Medical Officer on a Tac Evaluation, beating 90% of her classmates: a Commodore's Distinction for a daring rescue while on a training exercise: and the highest number of discipline demerits earned without actually being thrown out bodily since James T Kirk. (Admiral Kirk himself presented her with this final special award at her graduation - a hand-made cat'o'nine tails with the inscription "Figure out what making a lash for your own back means, kid. You've got a rep now.")

Suffice to say, she doesn't fit in very well in regular Starfleet circles, which suits her pretty much fine, and most Admirals have given up trying to give her direct orders. She would have been long gone if it weren't for her amazing talent for saving lives and the hope she brings to the average crewman. Because no matter how dangerous, or remote, or diplomatically difficult the situation, there's just that chance that five foot five of henna-haired warrior woman will dive out of the sky, snatch the fallen back into the heavens, and then chew them out for being dumb enough to get into trouble in the first place.

The reputation leads some of the more glory-hunting members of the Fleet and Academy to seek service on her vessel. Nine times out of ten they don't last. She prefers to hand-pick her crew for their resourcefulness, cunning, and ability to think independently - which means her best selections often come from the New Zealand Penal Colony. But a second chance is often all these patients need.

Since the war, Dr. Weaver has been in charge of the refit and repair of Serenity Station, a small outpost along a troublesome section of the Cardassian border and close to several trade routes. Her management style is described by various reports as "dominatrix", "pirate queen", "Western bar-room madam", "wheeler dealer" and "the finest base commander in our fleet". With frequent rescues, a station to run and a crew of misfits to subdue, life's rarely dull, but equally rarely peaceful..

Dr. Weaver's command is also unique in using freelancers, merchants and mercenaries on contract terms to carry out plausibly-deniable jobs. Rumours persist that the Doctor may be affiliated to Section 31 in some way: but they do not persist long in her presence.

Dr. Weaver is currently single, and does not discuss her private life extensively. It is known that her long-time partner was killed during the early days of the Dominion War. She corresponds regularly with Col Kira Nerys, commander of the Bajoran station formerly known as Deep Space Nine, and the pair's drinking sessions are the stuff of Starfleet legend.

OOC: If we're gonna have something this in-depth, I recommend taking it to a private forum for our use. More flexibility and implementation can be gotten somewhere like that rather than just consolidating everything into just one topic. Or over on the Holodeck works too, but that might be hard to manage. /endcorporatespeak

I like this idea. I am all for a loose alliance, I just don't know how far I would want to get involved with one group as I have never played an MMO before. I'll keep this in mind and see how things develop as we learn more about the game. But I am all for the idea of an association of Firefly fans. They can't take the sky from us!

And I absolutely adore Summer Glau. :D

SUMMMMEERRRR!!

Have to say my two favourites are Jewel (yay! Shiny!) and Capt. Tightpants his very self (aka Captain Hammer these days, probably for the same reason).

Very pleased that Jewel, having been a good girl, ascended to the Valhalla enjoyed by all sci-fi characters who were cast off before their time (ie: Stargate).

Weird Whedon connection: apparently Neil Patrick "Dr. Doogie Horrible" Harris tried out for Simon Tam. That would have made for a veeerryy different show...

Jewel is awesome too. Her character is pretty much the nicest person anyone could ever meet. Come to think of it all the women on Firefly were awesome and VERY good looking. With Jewel on Stargate and Summer on Terminator TSCC it is a very good time for fans of Firefly. Now we just need to get Serenity 2.

I'm a fan of everything Whedonesque, and I'd love to be able to play a non-shoot-em-all-and-let-Star-Fleet-sort-em-out type of character. I also like the idea of a frontier style, which of course was the inspiration for the original Star Trek. It's way too early for me to commit to a group, but I'll definitely keep Serenity Station on my list of "preferred deployments."

And, yeah, pretty much every woman in all of Whedon's shows was the bomb. Even the crazy, evil ones who would've killed me as soon as look at me were hot.

Well, with the success of Dr. Horrible "webisodes" The Wondrous Creator Of All That Is Most Awesome When He Gets Round To It (may his forehead forever shine wiith the light of ultimate truth) is now being bombarded with requests for an online Firefly serial, and has the means by which to achieve it.

However, it's not likely to happen. Much as all the Firefly crew loved the series, they're mostly all working hard right now. Fillion's doing his jobbing actor / sex god thang, Jewel and Morena jumping ship to SG, SUMMER! trashing robots, Adam trading a grumpy, one-liner-firing merc with a rifle for a grumpy, one-liner-firing FBI type in Chuck, Ron was semi-regular on Shark, Alan's doing character roles in Proper Big Grown Up Movies and Sean... well, who cares?

So I'm sure they'd all want to do it, it's just an awful lot of diary sync and a much bigger split for the money.

Plus Joss has a little thing called "Dollhouse" to contend with, although the new bunch of morons at Fox are already mucking around with the running order. *gulp* Let's hope they get beaten up, killed and ground to a fine pink powder before they can do any damage.

Welcome aboard, Achilles - and if we do get round to this, Serenity Station will be less of a formal SG / Guild / Fleet / whatchamacallit than a loose association of pilots who watch each others' backs... and everyone else's, come to that.

DrAmyWeaver

As far as I've thought it out:

(1) RP basis: a loose band/fraternity of edgy Fed pilots, mercs, ne'erdowells and - ahem - gentlefolk of fortune who either work for, have been rescued by, owe favours to or are otherwise affiliated with Serenity Station and its rescue programme.

(2) On chat/TeamSpeak: Talking in Space-Western/pseudo-Chinese speak to baffle others (eg: liberal use of "gorram", "shiny", "shoot that torp right up his pae gow" etc) is encouraged but not essential. Bonus points for doing mini dinosaur radio play epics, going into mystical River delusions, inviting Klingons over for tea and dumplings, pretending to have been shot through the chest with a telegraph pole or any other comedy items.

(3) In-game element: Serenity Station members watch each other's backs, tow / beam each other out of bad situations and team together for difficult mishes. It's not an exclusive club - you can belong to other fleets or wear other fleet "tags" and still stick with us.

(4) Building our reputation: Serenity Station members are also expected and encouraged to listen out for mayday broadcast calls or teams in trouble and respond wherever possible -the more suicidally dangerous the situation, the better. Generally helping out n00bs with controls etc is also good. If they thank you, casually mention that Serenity people just do this kind of thing and would they like to sign up?

(5) Fleet Tag: if we get into tags like on EVE, I'm taking suggestions for a Fleet tag. However, the first and most obvious one would be: o=O=o (which doesn't, admittedly, look all that much like the front end of a Firefly, but hell with it.)

Dr. Weaver, this is Admiral Mullaly. We've never met, and I doubt you've heard of me before (a good thing in my line of business) but a few complaints from some of my fellow Admirals have come across my desk. Frankly, I'm impressed. Not many people choose to pick a fight with Admiral Nechayev and live to tell about it. That sparked my curiousity. I've been keeping an eye on you and your crew, and I like what I see. You've taken what no other commander wanted, and you've turned it into a fleet capable of surviving, while keeping with the Federation spirit of helping others.

We need more people in the Starfleet like you and your crew. Keep it up and you just might get promoted, although I suspect you'd like to avoid that. Which brings me to what I came here to talk about. Whatever you need, consider it done. I've given authorization for all officers of {UFP} Fleet to work with your crew. I'm also offering to get in the field with your fleet. I have...skills that could be an asset in sticky situations. Let me know.

PERSONNEL FILE

Name: Thomas Mullaly
Rank: Vice Admiral
Fleet: {UFP} United Federation of Planets
Nationality: Canadian

Thomas Mullaly has a checkered past with Starfleet. His rocky start began during his time at Stafleet Academy, where he was part of five seperate incidents involving dangerous shuttlecraft manoeuvres. During his hearings, he chose to represent himself with the defense that “it could come in useful someday”. During all five hearings, before a decision could be reached, the hearing was disbanded, and evidence destroyed. Rumors circulated about the involvement of Section 31.

Once he graduated from the academy, at the top of his class, he began his service on the USS Bellerophon - Intrepid Class, under the command of Admiral William Ross. He served as conn officer until the ship's return from Romulus, attending a conference on Dominion War issues in 2375. He was then transferred to Starfleet Command, and promoted to Captain. Details on his career after this point are classified, Level III – Top Secret.

OOC: This seems like alot of fun, and I wanted to join in without leaving my fleet, so when I saw that you don't mind people being in other fleets, I brought it up with the rest of the Admirals of our fleet, and decided that we would allow our members to work alongside your own. I'm looking forward to working with/on Serenity Station, and I'm willing to help as much as possible. I have highly developed organizational skills, and I'll try to fit in as much time as possible, between {UFP} and Real Life (I'm going into Military University)

OOC: Well I suppose that depends on who/how many {UFP} members wish to/have time to work with Serenity Station. I know that I would personally like to work with you guys while still being part of my fleet, but I am in no way committing my fleet as a whole to working with Serenity Station. I am merely opening the "legal" and diplomatic pathways for our members to participate in Firefly Fleet, and to open working relationships between our clans. :D

Greetings, Tommy - I've heard of you from an old Academy buddy. Nice try at breaking the Quatrarch Maneuver record :D

The thing with Admiral Nurkforbrains you probably know more about than I do from your end, but nobody sends me a Chief Engineer who (a) doesn't know one end of a hydrospanner from another (b) is carrying 50 units of illegal protomatter explosive as personal luggage, then (c) demands to be sent into the Neutral Zone under cover of a rescue mission with threats against my personnel.

That sort of thing just ticks me off, frankly.

I thought Section was supposed to be subtle, do things all quiet 'n' kunoichi-like. I hope standards are improving. Incidentally, I hope your "engineer" is okay now after we dropped him back off at K-14. He's just a minion and probably didn't deserve the whole thing with the bar fight, K'Jenna demanding he marry her immediately, and that whole "mating ritual" thing she thought up with the greased Profion cobra. Man, that was pretty, and I still owe her some ale for that. He was begging me to toss him in the brig and send him home, and I happily obliged... I tell you, you ever need black ops done properly, bring in Klingon women. They know how to get TWISTY... oh, and they have a sense of humour. A little on the deadpan and downright evil side, but damn funny nonetheless :D

Anyhoo, we'll keep an eye out for the {UFP} folks, and you keep an eye out for us.

Cya out in the black stuff.

Well Amy, practice makes perfect. I beat it the fifth time, when I slightly revised the firing pattern.. :D

Actually, the engineer was admitted to Starfleet Medical for psychotic behaviour and halucinations. Apparently his belief that he was part of Section 31 was a part of his illness. I'm personally not sure if his illness developped before or after your "treatment". In any case, he certainly deserved what he got. His list of broken laws fills two PADDs. If he ever recovers, he'll spend the rest of his life in a penal colony.

By the way, I have indefinite periods of leave time coming up. The section of Starfleet that I work for doesn't have much to do in these peaceful times (although appearances are decieving). If you need help constructing pars of your station, I'm pretty handy. It might even be fun.

Mulally out.

My favorite show, my favorite Trek ship, my favorite kind of people! I think my heart skipped a beat after I read this I loved it so much! I am going to stick with Lotus Fleet, so I'm kind of in the same boat as Mullaly. I will definitely have a character with you guys though as I love Firefly/Serenity and this seems like the best of both worlds.

If there is anything you need help with send me a PM! My specialty are graphics, but by the looks of that banner you linked it looks like you've got that covered pretty well!

I'm usually one of them phaser-toting Kirk types, but you Doc types need some kind of protection. Sign me up! I recently got into some trouble with an Admiral I'd rather not name, something involving his daughter, and whatnot, but that's a story fer another time! Needless to say, right after me beatin' him in an honest fistfight, I got myself busted down to Commander rank, and lost my ship. It was a gorram piece of junk, anywho... But I'm happy to enlist with ya'll, and bring some fist swingin' action of my own!

OOC: Awesome banner! With your permission, I'd love to save that to my computer!

Welcome!

Just need to do a bit of paperwork here, don't mind me...

OK... Mysterious preacher man with mysterious past who appears... mysteriously... check.
Psychic ninja... check.
Laconic doctor... several...

FYI, will be registering website address and setting up forums, SereniTrek 'Verse Guide and other such goodies shortly, but today busily building a random SereniFly quote generator to stick at the top of the page. (eg: "I don't like fellas who kills me, not in general). Suggestions welcome.

Also, for those pedants who were wondering about how these two 'verses came together - choose your answer from:
(1) hell with it, it's fun:
(2) if you really insist on having logical reasoning -have you watched Trek at all? It's not exactly hard science even for science fiction...
(3) It's all Q's fault. Probably.
(4) Ninja space hookers? HAWT. I'm in.

Options 1 and 2, rest easy. Option 4 - please report to your quarters until you've calmed down.

Option 3: stand by for ye first chapter of a groundbreaking, mildly epic abomination against literature (fanfiction) entitled:

THE VEILS OF NIGHT

PROLOGUE

The child sat quietly, crosslegged, framed by the jewels of the universe. Swirling stars reflected off her dark eyes, focused unblinkingly on the spot where the man had been. A dozen others watched the empty space with varying degrees of horrified fascination. No-one wanted to be the first to speak, or move, or breathe.

The child smiled slightly, and tilted her head, closed her eyes, slipped back her sleeve, and held out her hand in a plucking motion, waiting for the right moment, waiting for her audience, ready for the conjuring trick that would enthral the room.

"Aaaaaaaand... you're back!"

The screaming started once again.

It was not one voice, neither was it many, neither did it seem to be in the room - yet it filled the room. Where the man had once stood, a rapid blur of shapes suddenly whirled. Some loomed massive and threatening, fur and claws giving way to tentacles and slime and...worse things. Some shapes were piteous: a terrified baby being lowered towards hot coals, a deer with eyes too large for any creature surrounded by poison spines, a writhing tortoise on its back, slowly baking under the merciless rays of the sun.

The child spoke into the blur, calmly, in a lilting, sing-song voice.

"You do this too, you know. You toy with things. You meddle for amusement. Curious. So very curious, eyes all agog with the apples and toys, you look so long, so large, so small, and it's all fun till someone gets hurt... they always get hurt..."

Now the child was speaking to herself, to her twin. But while one sat on the floor, the other was strapped into a barbarous, ugly device, legs and arms spread, writihing against the straps, as long, long needles inched their way toward her ears and the back of her spine...

"Too much. Too NAUGHTY. Go away again."

And the vision vanished.

"Back."

This time the man took her place in the torture device - but not as a vision. It seemed more real than possible, more substantial, more threatening. The screaming had stopped, but the look on his face was far, far more horrifying. The rage, the pain, they were still reflected in his eyes - eyes as deep as the child's, as he finally understood the truth. A master of all, a shaper of galaxies, was no longer in control, even of his own form,.

The child walked towards him and stared directly into his eyes.

"You build things up, then throw them down in fits of temper. You create and destroy on whims, depending on your state of mind. You think you know me, like you think you know it all - every speck of it. But I know you. I know you better. I know all you are is mind, a state of mind, a whim of existence, a trick of your own light. I know you, because I know minds. All minds. And how to change someone's mind. Yes to no. Right to wrong. On to..."

"Please... no... no more..."

"Oh, you learned something! Lookit the puppy learned how to beeeg!" She danced around the man, a thing of graceful, gleeful destruction.

Then she stopped.

"Oh, two things. Two things. You learned two things today." She sang it and bounced merrily back towards the bound man.

"You're not sure what that is. That little tickly feeling that grabs you by the throat, makes you burn in the head, burn to run, burn all over..."

She stood on tiptoes, level with his face.
"Scaredy cat".

She twirled away, then struck a pose in front of all the others. "Well, I can see little Johnny has learned a lot today. So hometime. Hometime!"

The man was standing now, free of the shackles, but no less a captive.

She raised her hands before him like a flamenco dancer, fingers ready to snap. The man's eyes widened.

"Class... dis..."

"STOP."

Two other voices spoke in unison. Two hands held on to hers, breaking her flow. One was rough, calloused, grimed with the dirt of a hundred spaceport cafes and days spent crawling about a greasy engine room. The other was smoother, elegant and feminine, yet with the faintest traces of deep scars - left there by choice, not by luck.

"You know what he did, You know what he can do. Will do again. For ever and ever and EVER!" The child's voice of command had broken now, becoming petulant, lashing out trying to justify itself.

Her friend spoke, straight and true - he had no choice. He knew any lie, any deception, any spin was futile. "I know what you can do. I don't know if you want to. I don't want you to."
The woman in the strange uniform squeezed her wrist gently, gaining the child's attention. "And I know him. And I think you're better than him."

The child looked directly into the woman's face, not struggling in her grip, then looked back towards her the friend that held her, looking for signs of fear or rage, and found neither.

"Am I?"

TO BE CONTINUED...

This is why I want a transfer to the Serenity station... The most exciting thing so far where I am was a collision between a runabout and a paneling of a ship from somewhere... Now that you mention it, I remember hearing one of the engineers complaining it probably came off one of the ships from the Firefly Fleet passing through there. Seriously though, pilot like me needs to get off this boring little station and find something better to do before I kick the bucket from bordom watching the dilithium crystallize. I heard a ship heading to the station should be passing through here so I'm jumping on it and heading out there. Screw fleet reassignment orders. I bet that admiral you butted heads with is holding it up.

Real Name: [deleted]
Known Aliases: Pandemic Shadowhand
Rank: Lieutenant
Current Assignment: Starfleet Scout Service (Detached)

Duty Assignment: USS Saratoga (NCC-31911) - Battle of Wolf 359

The pilot designated 'Pandemic Shadowhand' served his first term with Starfleet as a helm officer aboard the USS Saratoga (Starfleet Registry NCC-31911), and was serving in his second year when the Saratoga was dispatched as a part of the fleet to stop the Borg incursion at the Battle of Wolf 359.

Incident reports after the engagement detail courageous, if extremely unorthodox, piloting ability. Shadowhand's medical records also detail a clinical inability to experience the emotional sensation known most commonly among organic species as fear, though this condition hardly speaks in his favor.

After his performance during the encounter with the Borg, as well as the recommendations of his Executive Officer of the time Benjamin Sisko, Shadowhand was permitted to continue his Starfleet service under Sisko's command when he was assigned to DS-09.

Duty Assignment: Deep Space 09 - Dominion War

After recovering from injuries sustained in the line of duty aboard the Saratoga, the pilot known as Pandemic Shadowhand requested and was granted permission to transfer to DS-09 under the command of his former XO, Benjamin Sisko. He was on station for less than six months when the Dominion War began, during which he served in the same daredevil capacity for which he had demonstrated unswerving ability aboard the Saratoga.

Reports from DS-09 and Captain Sisko during this period indicate an extreme talent for the helm of any starship, as well as a deliterious inability to feel fear even in the face of near-certain annihilation. This lack on Shadowhand's part has come to be recognized by other pilots as a death wish of some kind, likely attributed to the traumas of the Battle of Wolf 359, and a subtle mythos has begun to attach itself to him. An irrational belief that where Pandemic goes, warfare and death are sure to follow. While Starfleet Intelligence has investigated these allogations unofficially, there has been no evidence to suggest that Shadowhand is either a focus for the generation of hostilities or an agent of some other nation.

Duty Assignment: USS Defiant (NX-74205) - First Contact

After the events and horrors of the Dominion War, and having exemplified himself in performance of his singular talent for handling of a starship, Captain Sisko assigned Shadowhand to the helm of the experimental combat vessel USS Defiant (Starfleet Registry NX-74205). It was in this position as pilot of the Defiant that Shadowhand was taken aboard the Enterprise (Starfleet Registry NCC-1701-E) along with his commanding officer Commander Worf after defense of Earth against another Borg incursion.

The elements of this encounter - [SECTION CLASSIFIED]

In the wake of these events, it was believed by the chain of command over Shadowhand that he would be able to serve Starfleet best in a solo capacity, rather than as the helmsman of a larger vessel. To that end he was transferred to the Starfleet Scout Service, where he was assigned an extended-range light reconnassaince craft and permitted to set his own course. The vessel he was given possessed incredible range and sensor capabilities for such a small hull classification, both of which were thought to have been benefits in the kind of duty that Shadowhand seemed best suited for.

At last report, Shadowhand has been out of contact for more than two years, wandering the depths of the space lanes, until a recent coded request from him to dispatch his personnel records to Serenity Station. This turn of events gives no indication of where he has been or what he has encountered in those two years in unexplored space, but it provides an opportunity to gather that data if he can be brought in.

Always room for one more here, just so long as you don't wind up hitchin' your way here.

And now...

THE VEILS OF NIGHT: Chapter One
STARDATE 54973.4
P'karn Village, Santriaginus V colony (Class M-II - Primitive Earthlike - UNDER PROTECTION - NO INTERVENTION)

"Burn the witch! Burn the witch! UNCLEAAAAAN! BURN! BURN!"

The struggling, hooded figure was taken up and laid down on the crude pyre of wood. The man was slightly taller than the villagers, and looked well-nourished and strong compared to their scrawny frames - many clearly marked with smallpox scars.

A wild-eyed, wildly coughing village elder scrambled up to the edge of the pyre, waving a ornately carved stick of some kind with a curved tip over the captive. "Only the Great Sky can cure the plague of ages! Only the Great Sky can bring relief! This is an impostor! This is not the one of Eight Harts!"

His audience seemed impressed bar one - the one frantically struggling to escape his bonds. So impressed, in fact, they failed to notice a small patch of long grass being gingerly peeled aside, and the situation carefully assessed, judged, a decision taken.

"And heeere... we... go."

The crowd wheeled as one in horror at the sound... a deafening, cawing screech that rent the air around them. Over the top of the low clouds circling the hill, the source could clearly be seen: a gigantic, pterodactyl-like shape, with the kind of claws that could tear apart a runabout like tinfoil. Impressive.

"An angel of the Great Sky! An angel of the Great Sky! We must burn the witch to appease it!"
Oh, hell no.
As the flames began to lick around the captive, choking noxious fumes from the green wood assaulted his nostrils. He flailed, looking desperately for help from anyone, but they were all dancing, singing, and pointing to the Great Sky Angel.

Except for one.

A redheaded woman, dirty-faced, small and slim, dressed in native garb yet unmarked like those around her, she also carried a heavy backpack with ease. She leapt upon the pyre, screaming wild-eyed to the sky, yelling "LOOK NOT UPON THE GREAT ANGEL'S WRATH!" and howling like an animal. And as the flames began to rage, she looked him straight in the eye, smiled, and saluted.

He nodded, and shut his eyes. The priest raised his staff in anger...

...and lo, there was light.

The worshippers reeled back from the sudden blaze, blinded. Shortly after, a screaming whine rose into the sky - surely the Great Sky Angel carrying off its prey - and they milled about in confusion.

"Quit struggling! This pack isn't buiilt for this!"
"Marhff harff hmnnfff hrffannn!"
"What? Oh, the gag..."
"I'm scared of heights!"
"Madre mio... you live in space, for godssakes. How far down is that!"
"There's never this much space under my goddamned feet, that's why! Get me down!"
"Not wise."
"Why not?"
PTWANG...
"GO UP! GO UP!"
Evidently the flash grenade hadn't been entirely effective, as several of the congregation had spotted their prize was not being rent apart by airborne demons but instead spirited away. And while a Starfleet regulation flightpack was a fairly nimble transport for one, it struggled under the weight of two - and was clearly no match for...
"EAGLES??? They have giant gorrammed EAGLES here?"
"It's a kind of buzzard, I think. Geranoaetus loxodontis. No idea if it evolved here or if it's a mutation, but quite fascinating. The locals use them for hunting."
PTOING!
"I could see the fascination more if they weren't shooting at us! You could have warned me!"
"Through the gag?"
"Don't get technical! Going down...AAAAAARGHHH..."

Farmhands fled as the neatly-made haystack exploded and began swearing profusely in eight different languages, none of them native to the world. The woman hit the ground rolling and running, looking around before yanking her wriggling companion out in front of the astonished onlookers.

The woman threw back her hood, unleashing a mane of gold-red hair that caused one or two of the farmers to gulp in awe. Most bolted when she pulled out an eight-inch knife that glowed oddly at the edge, and sliced through her companion's living, twisting diamondvine bonds as if they were no more than daisy chains.

She stood and smiled for a second, before diving to her right- just avoiding the talons of a passing Geranoaetus loxodontis as it fascinatingly tried to decapitate her in its charming native way. The man stood and grabbed a bamboo pole from a nearby fence, throwing it to the woman. She stood ready at the second pass - then, to her companion's astonishment, ran towards the oncoming eagle, vaulted neatly on a bale of hay and slammed a hefty boot into the astonished rider's face.

She tumbled, rolled, came up and sprinted, grabbing onto the tall man and charging into the barn. More and more eagles swept around the crude structure, some firing arrows, some dropping torches, and all the while the crazy old man yelled for blood and sulphur.

"No way out - they've got us front and back!"
"You didn't beat Kobayashi Maru, did you?"
"No, nobody can - wait... YOU?"
"Yeah, yeah. All you have to do is think about it a different way to the way they think. Hold hard to all you hold dear, sailor."

As the flames reached their crescendo, once again the worshippers were thrown back as the barn erupted straight up in a blaze of blue. And as the old man screamed in victory, he never registered the shuttlecraft hurtling towards the sky, shedding loose strands of hay and one unfortunate chicken, who thought it had finally achieved amazing powers of flight...albeit briefly. At least the old man got a decent lunch out of the day.

"So... you've gotta be the Valkyrie?"
"The name's Weaver. Dr. Weaver to you."
"Do I need to say thank you?"
"You need to say sorry. This place is off limits, has been for years. Too much Beltran radiation to beam in or out".
"But that's what made the colony so useful to study. I know I shouldn't have interfered but the smallpox..."
"Hippocratic Oath. For the good of the patients and use your judgement to never do harm. Do you know how long that little funfair could screw up their minds for? How many will die when that old coot decides they didn't please the... what?"
"Great Sky God. And it was already contammed. That was my other crime. I stole the Book of the Great One. And still..." the man dug under his shirt..."got it."

He tossed the wrinkled, antique tome onto the dashboard, accidentally setting off a ventral thruster that jerked the ship wildly. After correcting course and giving her companion a nasty glare, Amy picked up the book. It seemed to be mostly pictures of men with strange battle clubs in brightly coloured tunics, though one pale man seemed to be revered throughout.

She looked at the cover: Hockey Gods of the 20th Century. Hmmph. She'd look it up when she got home, but first she had an idiot researcher to get really angry at. The only thing that tempered her rep as the angel of mercy was the tongue-lashings she gave her salvaged souls - which they often spoke of in as much awe and fear as the situations they'd been dragged backwards out of.

Being loved was one thing, she told herself, being famous was another, but being feared as well made for a nice round three - and if it meant fewer idiots to pick up from situations like this, so much the better... But first, home for a shower.

Home.

She smiled, as always, when she thought that. Arcing gently around the planet she came, streaming blue-green Beltran radiation off the shields in long ribbons, like one of the dancing maids at the county fair. Beautiful. Truly beautiful. As the Kaywinnet Lee swept majestically into view, the autodocking sequence quietly clicked into play, nestling the dropcraft into the saucer section snugly. And that wonderful "keeelack-clunk" as the hull guides locked on and the airlock pressurised... home again safe.

"I really should thank you, but..."
"You want to thank me? Don't do anything so damn fool again."

Her XO looked at her quizzically as she stumbled out onto the bridge, still covered in ,but she simply made a face and shrugged. She was too tired after all the stalking and crawling and being shot at by gorrammed eagle-riding maniacs to care about form.

"Take us out, Mr. Harkness, take it easy."
"Aye, Ma'am. Helm? Set course for Serenity Station, warp two, charging programme enabled".
"Sir. Changing to 368-18 mark two, warp two, excess power to charging stations".

All she wanted...

"Lock door. Activate shower, 33 degrees. Coffee, large, sugar, cream, one shot bourbon."
"Affirmative. Exception: ingredients "bourbon", "sugar" and "cream" not recommended due to Starfleet health promotion campai..."
"Stow it. Medical override 12684-Charlie-Two. I need to sleep and not go hunting through my ship for which gelpack that idiot idea's stored in. With a welding phaser."
The ship ignored the empty threat - as with chidren, the ship knew the captain's most spectacular threats and blustering were saved for those she loved most. However, it decided not to take chances, and s steaming, frothing mug of joy materialsed next to Dr. Weaver's desk. She sipped, then positively skipped into the shower, beginning the words of an age old melody that sprang into her head, unbidden.

"...my love, take my laaand, take me where I cannot staaaaaaaaAAAAAAARGGGHH...""

(Supplemental)
There are many things a bridge crew don't get to see in their life. A dripping wet, half-naked woman is generally speaking one of them. However, this was the Captain, and her face blazed redder than the alert beacons as she stormed out of the ready room in a towel.

"Commander. I need to understand something". Uh-oh. She's being patient.

She surveyed the situation.
"Why have we stopped, why did I get thrown across my cabin into next week in doing it, why are these damn sirens kicking up my migraine, and what in the name of the...."
She stared.

"Gravitational distortion, Captain. It's fading off our screens already, but looks like it caught a dose of the Beltran radiation we were venting out of the nacelles. And sneezed, I think."
Oblivious to her state of undress, Dr. Weaver swung herself over the rail into the command chair, and looked intently. Off to the starboard side of her ship were the last flickering traces of a vast sidelong rainbow - soon so faint it could have been a trick of the light - then gone.

"Mr. Stinson? Analysis, please."
"Warp distortion of massive size and power, Ma'am. Judging from the residue..." the science officer flicked the display to the main viewscreen, and described the slowly fading arc of energy with his finger - "that little burst of ours activated an arc a couple of thousand klicks long. See - it's still spreading out beyond sensor range."

"Check sensor calibration - we can see a junebug across half a star system."
"Already done. Estimates suggest that the object is nearly a light year across."

A less experienced starhand would have come out with a line like "impossible" or "fantastic." Amy simply sighed, leant back in her chair, and gestured to her comms officer. "Becca? All officers to bridge. Damage report and a sci writeup, stat."
"Aye, Ma'am."

She swept the chair around majesticaly to face her XO. "I want everything we can get out on this thing before we bug out of here - not our job to figure it out, only to figure if it's an immediate threat to life."
"Aye, Ma'am".
"And get my coffee."
"Aye, Ma'am."
She stalked over to the comm board, where a familiar light had begun flashing ominously. Don't you do that. Don't you DARE. Not there...
The light held steady, pointing straight into the distortion. Damn.
"...and some clothes. Oh, and all hands: gold alert, imminent rescue. Wideband planetary mayday from point oh-six-nine-mark-oh-six-seven. This is not a drill. We got work to do."

For Attention of Dr Amy Weaver.....
From Cmdr (Ret.) Daniel Bartholomew (Engineering Dept.)

I was sorting through my files getting ready to make my posting recommendations when the next batch of students graduate and I thought you might like a heads up on this young chap. He's hardworking, bit of a trouble maker, but then weren't we all heh and extremely loyal. He has command possibilities, but he won't hear of it at the moment. Anyway, I heard through the grapevine you were recruiting fresh blood and thought you might have a place for him.

D. Bartholomew

BACKGROUND & PERSONNEL FILE : JARERED B. KILGANNON

Age : 20
Height : 6ft
Nationality : Irish / English

Primary Area : Engineering & Maintenance
Secondary Area : Weapons, Tactical & Security

--Background--
His father Michael is originally from Dublin, married Janet Weston whilst working and living in what used to be the London area of the UK. Both are accomplished Botanists and now live in a remote area of Southern Ireland where they are involved with studying the adaptability of new plant life to Earth's ecosystem.
Although more than intelligent enough to follow in their footsteps, Jarered never really found that line of study interesting enough to hold his attention. He found he was more at home tinkering with and later maintaining the equipment his parents used for their work. He also took an interest in the ancient martial arts of the far east, studying what he could on his parents computer and also acquiring rare books where he could.
When he decided to apply for Starfleet Academy he was unsure about which area to primarily concentrate on, so he decided to apply his time equally to both Engineering and Tactical/Security disciplines.

--Description--
While Jarered is an imposing figure at 6ft in height he is by no means large, the best way to describe him would be wiry. He excelled in his physical courses due to the level of fitness he has maintained.
Although he can be loud at time his manners are generally good and he is able to organize those around him with relative ease. His only weakness is his self organization, his ability to organize others is fine, he himself though, it seems, prefers chaos to order and bizarrely seems to work better for it. He has had the importance of being organised stressed to him so whether this comes to be a hindrance in the future is yet to be seen.

I'd be interest in this here group.

Of course, I need a bunch of quantum torpedoes and the prefix codes for our mighty fine commander for... ah, technical reasons.

Just looking for a determined bunch who aren't afraid to just live free and keep flying.

*looks around the dusty station*

Wow. I mean really. I've been through places that would make your eyes pop out of their sockets and go running for cover. But I'm very rarely surprised. I didn't think 25th Century technology and mud went together? Kinda homely. I like it.

I'm Preacher Alex Ridry. My friends call me Aardy. Well actually everyone calls me Aardy on account of everyone being my friend. Here, have some Saurian Brandy. It's a little wersh, but its not from this universe, so that's all right then.

Yeah, I just popped into this universe. You won't believe some of the places I've seen. One of them was full of shrimp. Not pleasant. Thankfully, the beat up craft I arrived in lasted just long enough to get me to this here mudhole.

Can I have some water? Thanks. Replicators? Sure that's pretty neat. Tastes a bit funny. But of course, it's all good.

I'm done travelling around. I still ache from the last jump. Perhaps I'll tell you about it some day. It was not a good war. Like there's anything like a good war.

What am I good for? Well, you look like fine people, very determined. You've got that zealot rescuer look about you. If you ask me, I think you lot are the ones to fear. Those crazy *******s who lead the charge? They got nothing on you. You need some kind of spherical object to even consider doing what you do.

Now, I may be a man of god (which one? Oh that would be telling. Sometimes, even I don't know. Depends on the day of the week. No, it's not Norse), but I have no objection to stopping someone from doing bad. And I'm not one of these who debates the semantics until I'm raw in the face. (Kneecaps, a good, dearly departed friend of mine, once used to end a debate with me). I know right and I know wrong and I know arrogance intimately too.

So I know it's wrong to attack crazy medics, hell bent (ah, that's my god today) on saving people. Which is why I'll happily fly any pile of metal between you and harms way.

I'll never let you die alone, that's a promise. And telegraph poles are a specialty of mine (avoiding them that is). If I ever hear you utter a profound statement, I'll take the torpedo heading for your pretty little forehead.

and any stray torpedoes, well look at the state of this place. What are the starship's firing systems like if this is any indication?

So this is your lay preacher, who knows more than he's telling, but doesn't know enough about any given situation signing off for now.

Chase
08-10-2008, 11:20 AM
Chase was on his back, sweating, and hard at work - A situation where, without many further details, he was quite happy to find himself in. However, reality had a much, much different plan lined up for him, and thus decided to make the isolinear bank, which Chase was working under, emit violent blue sparks once again. They spewed from the bank like confetti, falling through the air like fireflies. A couple found their way to Chase’s face and neck, exposed when he had removed his tunic.

“Owch!” he winced quickly.

Once again, the life support systems on the Discovery had decided to treat the inhabitants of decks 14 through 16 to a hot summer holiday, with temperatures reaching up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the best of conditions. Decks 1 through 13, conversely, were distributing overcoats and blankets to the on-duty officers and crew.

Chase blinked away a bead of sweat from his eyes, writhing himself deeper and deeper into the maintenance conduit. Three spare isolinear chips were wedged in his clenched teeth, a forth tucked behind his ear, and a fifth was migrating it’s way down his tunic to rest somewhere above his belt. He still had five meters to go before the Primary Maintenance Shaft (Or, the PMS, as the Knuckle-draggers in engineering liked to call it), and then it was a simple matter of replacing all five of the chips in the Life Support Control Unit.

Chase sighed, rolled his eyes, and continued to slowly wiggle himself down the conduit. The lighting bars that lined the top of the conduit flickered slightly, with more showers of sparks crackling out of seemingly every orifice.

This must be what going mad feels like, he thought.

At last, at long last, the conduit ended, and Chase planted his boots firmly onto the bottom of the PMS. He looked up, wistfully, and removed the chips from his mouth as an old Terran would do a cigarette. The shaft, while only spanning a few decks, nonetheless leered imposingly down at him, seeming to almost damn the engineer for interrupting it’s hissy-fit.

“You best knock that off now,” Chase said, waving the spare circuitboards to the top of the shaft. “Once I fix you up proper, you won’t be giving me that look no more.” He sighed, then opened his tricorder. “Now where is the little bugger, anyway?” he murmured to himself. The tricorder beeped, and the small display on the device indicated that the control unit was three decks up, opposite the ladder access.

“Well… a’int that just fantastic.”

Forgetting he was holding the chips, he dropped them to the deck. They made an odd tinkling sound as they landed down, one on top of another.

“Gorramn it!”

Isolinear Chips are physically durable. They aren’t easily smashed, chipped, snapped, or melted. The only time that they went wrong is when the electronics go bad. Chase was (reasonably) sure that no harm was done – he just wanted to get done fast.

He kneeled down, setting his tricorder off to the side while he picked up the small chips. Once he had safely tucked them in his boot, he stood up once again.

He rolled his neck around on his shoulders, feebly attempting to work out the kinks that the crawl down the access conduit had gifted him with. Chase again looked up, biting his lip anxiously. He wasn’t a huge fan of heights. Normally, each deck would have it’s own Jefferies hatch to seal itself off from the large shaft, easily turning a long fall to one’s death into something less serious. But, unfortunately, McClellan had to open all of the hatches, otherwise Chase wouldn’t have been able to access the Life Support bank. Chase recalled the conversation he had with McClellan just a half hour prior.

”It’s a bungy little situation we got here, Chief,” he frowned, looking at the systems display. “Because the Life Support system’s got it in it’s stupid conduit-laced brain that each deck should have a different environment, each deck is sealed off from every other one. We caught a lucky break with the lifts and were able to isolate those into a different control cluster, otherwise we’d be stuck tapping messages to each other in Morse code on the bulkheads.”
“Morse what?” Chase cocked his head.
“Never mind that. What matters is that we’ve found a back door. The life support bank is here,” he pointed to a flashing dot on the display. “A few decks from the bottom of the PMS. If we can get into the PMS from here,” he pointed to a conduit leading into the shaft, “We can send a general override into the shaft, open all the deck hatches inside. It’ll be stinkin’ hot at the bottom, but at the top, don’t be too surprised if you freeze your nipples off.”
Chase sniffed. As irritating as McClellan was, he knew he was right.
“Fine, do it. ‘soon as I’ve written the replacement chips, send in the override, and I’ll take a nice stroll and find a place to stick ‘em.”
“You got it, Chief.” He started to walk away.
“Oh, and by the way, Ensign,” Chase called after him.
“Chief?”
“You’re lucky as hell I’m not shoving you in there to freeze your nipples off.”
“Thanks for caring, boss.”
“I try.”

My nipples are the least of my worries.

Chase took one last look around, then reluctantly made towards the ladder. Clenching his teeth, he grabbed the rungs. They were warm to the touch, which did nothing to encourage Chase to continue forward. Nonetheless, he began to climb… very… slowly.

It dragged on for ages, the time amplified even more so by all the things Chase started to notice. His nose itched, there was hair sweeping in front of his eyes, and the chips were digging painfully into his heel. Nothing could convince him to take his eyes off the ladder, or let go of anything else.

As he made his way up the ladder, he started to shiver. The cold air from the decks above was beginning to set in. Sooner or later, he figured, he’d start to see his breath.

At last, at long last, Chase made it to the panel. The metal-meshed floor could have been covered in cow manure, but Chase still would have been happy to release himself from the ladder and jump down onto it. He landed with a satisfying “clang”. Clutching himself for warmth, he slowly looked around locating the life support panel. After a few tries (he kept missing due to trembling hands,) he prised open the cover to the panel, revealing a matrix of thin, colored chips all held snugly in place, doing their best to keep the air clean and the temperature pleasant.

“S-s-sorry mates, but your b-b-best just a’int good enough t-t-today.” Chase shivered from cold and laughter, regaining confidence now that he was almost done. Again, he pulled out his tricorder. Or, rather, he would have, if it was on his belt. He grabbed at empty air for a moment.

“…”

He pulled on his nose for a moment, then, hesitantly, looked down the shaft.

It was a long drop down. That was the first thing he noticed. And the second thing. It wasn’t until the fifth or sixth try that he actually registered a small instrument laying at the bottom. To Chase’s misfortune, that small instrument happened to be his tricorder.

“他媽的!”

Chase leaned backwards, looking anywhere but down. He sighed, and cursed all the gods he could think of offhand for his lack of room to pace. Temperature wasn’t a problem now, he was red hot with a nasty combination of embarrassment and rage. He looked at the ladder, swore again, and clambered on to make his somewhat more rapid descent.

The shaft seemed all too happy to jeer at him for his mistake. The bottom gaped at him, daring him to miss a rung and fall. The top got smaller and smaller as Chase went lower and lower, taunting him for his departure.

Chase, unhappy with his near poetic anthromorphisation of his workplace, shook his head to clear his mind and descended the last dozen meters or so with haste. He picked up his tricorder and, out of reflex more than anything else, checked it for damage. He knew it was foolish, it didn’t have any reason to be broken, but Chase didn’t want to have to make a third trip down for anything.

After completing a short diagnostic, Chase fixed the device to his belt and all but scampered up the ladder back to his perch, where the chip panel remained open from his previous meddlings.

“Right, where were we, then?”

Replacing the chips was a stupidly easy task, as opposed to the trouble it had taken to track down the problem and actually reach it. He put the burnt chips in his boot, then called McClellan.

“McClellan, this is Chase.”
“What’s up, Chief?”
“I fixed the chip problem, replaced ‘em as per the plan I showed you earlier. You should be seeing the LS systems making nice with each other across the ship now.”
A pause. No doubt McClellan was confirming this.
“You’re absolutely right, Chief. It’s actually starting to cool off down here rather nicely. And the captain reports that the bridge crew is beginning to feel their toes again.”
“Shiny. I’m gonna close up and run off to my quarters.” Chase began towards the ladder.
“No joy there, boss. Cap’n Heibegger wants you in his ready room before you start anything else.”
“Tell him to ram a stick up his 碰撞.”
“I would, but I’m actually rather fond of not having to scrub the plasma conduits.” Chase could almost hear the young ensign’s smirk through the badge. He sighed.
“Fine. I’m on my way. But don’t expect to hear from me for a while.”
“Why’s that?”
"I reckon the captain intends to load me in a torpedo tube and shoot me into space."

To be continued…

Chase
08-10-2008, 09:38 PM
(Continued from my previous post)

“You look well-used, Chase.” Captain Hans Heibegger frowned, regarding the engineer in the manner a housewife would look down upon a muddy dog. Chase, having just come into the captain’s ready room, was still slick with sweat from before.

“I woulda stopped off for ‘shower and a shave, but I reckoned you wanted to speak to me all nice and quick-like.” Chase smirked, crossing his arms.

Heibegger raised a finger, as though about to scold Chase, but evidently thought better of it, instead using it to point to the chair in front of his desk. “Sit.” He instructed.

Chase sat, leaning back in the chair while Heibegger perused a document on the computer sitting on his desk.

“I’ve received a troubling report from Security Chief Dawson.” He began.

“In this day and age, I’d be worried if a report wasn’t.”

“She says she had to forcibly restrain you from starting a fight with my first officer.”

“Does she? That’s nice.”

“She also lists a dozen other crewmen who saw the same thing,” Heibegger looked up from the screen at Chase. “As well as a rather thorough list of places where you told her to stick her PADD into after she subdued you.”

“Good for her.” Chase returned the captain’s gaze, crossing his arms.

“Don’t you have anything to say to this?” the captains swiveled the computer to face Chase. “Are you saying that you had nothing to do with this – that fourteen of my crewmen are lying just to get you in trouble?”

“No.”

“So you’re accepting responsibility for what you did?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Well, denial of conspiracy against you and not accepting responsibility in the matter seem to be mutually exclusive in this case, don’t you agree?”

“I’m not sayin’ I didn’t do it. I’m sayin’ that I don’t take responsibility for it.” Chase kept a level gaze towards his commanding officer, who was ever so slowly beginning to fume.

“Starfleet has rules, Lieutenant.” Heibegger said. “That’s what those four years were for before you were allowed near a Starship. In those rules, it says that when a rule is broken, someone has to be held responsible for it. After all,” he continued, “you can’t break rules without having someone to break them.” He stood up and began to pace around the desk. “So, what I have here, is a rather sticky situation, Lieutenant.”

Chase followed the captain with his eyes, attempting to see what he had planned for him. “What we have… is a situation where one of those rules has been broken, but nobody’s
willing to be held responsible.”

“Well, who would?”

“In such situations,” the captain ignored Chase’s remark, “the evidence must be examined to determine exactly who, or what, was at fault. Who broke the rule? Why? All questions that need to be answered before the responsibility is forced,” he slammed a hand down on the desk, “upon a person. And right here,” he pointed to the monitor, “I have fourteen accounts from fourteen different people that say that, at 2323 hours last night, you were in ten forward, along with First Officer Winters, attempting to start a fight with him.”

“Does that ‘evidence’ of yours say why?” Chase butted in. The temperature of the room was rising, and it had nothing to do with malfunctioning life support systems.

“No, it doesn’t. It does, on the other hand, say that, after a few minutes of loud banter between the two of you, you took a swing at Winters. And you tried to take a few more before Chief Dawson stepped in to subdue you and prevent you from assaulting a superior officer.”

“Assaulting a superior officer!” Chase burst out of his seat, furious. “I decked him once! He didn’t even get so much as a black eye for his troubles!”

“So you admit that you hit him.”

“That was never in any sort of debate, sir.” The last word stressed so hard it shook the air around it.
“And you believe that whatever reason you had for hitting him justified doing so. You believe,” Heibegger said, looking Chase straight in the face, “that whatever reason you had is more important than rules that have stood in tradition for three hundred years? You actually believe that?”

“Not in as many words, no.” Chase stared back at Heibegger, daring him to continue.

“Well, out with it, Lieutenant.”

“Winters…” Chase began, “Winters an’ I go back, Cap’n. He and I were in the same academy class, the same four years of rules and regs that you did your shoutin’ match with me about. He and I, we, ah, we didn’t make nice so well. He and his goons always looked down at me for comin’ from a less than fanciful upbringing. My parents weren’t scientists or diplomats or nothin’ like that. They had the stones to go and volunteer to go live on some planet on the edge of Fed space. There was little luxuries or niceties to go around, we made by through hard work and holdin’ on to every damn man we had. And Winters… he had this… damned arrogance around him that’d make me want to punch him in the face every damned time I saw that 兒子一個蕩婦.”

“So you did.”

“So I did, cap’n.” Chase sighed, shaking his head, “And to be quite honest, if I’d’ve known a month ago that that sonova***** was the XO on this here bird, I likely wouldn’t have taken the transfer.”

“You took his arrogance as a reason to use physical force.”

“When you say it like that, cap’n, it doesn’t sound the way I see it.”

Heibegger leaned back in his chair, rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Lieutenant… Chase… This is the third time since you got on this ship that you’ve caused trouble, at least that I got wind of. And if there’s one thing I detest on board my ship, it’s insubordination.” He gestured a hand at Chase, “Surely, you being an engineer, you have to understand. A machine has to have all of it’s parts working together. If there’s a single fluctuation, a single ‘broken’ part…” he closed his hand, “eventually, the whole machine falls apart. And I will not have that on my ship.”

“If you’re suggesting that I leave, it’s my understanding that it’s pretty cold outside.”

Heibegger sighed, and then looked back at his screen, pulling up some more documents. “We’re docking at Starbase 145 in a week, we’ll be undergoing some major overhauls and we’ll be settled there for about two more. By the time we leave,” he said, looking to Chase, “I want you off my ship. I don’t care where you go. Go to Deep Space Nine, go to Earth, hell, you can go to Cardassia for all I care! But you will not be allowed on board the Discovery again, or you’ll find yourself in the brig. Do I make myself clear, Lieutenant?”

Chase didn’t know how to react. It was the first time he’d ever been ejected from a ship, but at least he got a free ticket away from that ******* Winters.

“Crystal, Sir.”

“Good. Dismissed, Lieutenant.”

Chase stood up and made for the door. They parted, feeding off onto the bridge. Chase was about to go through, but then turned around to look at Heibegger. He was studying something on his screen intently. Chase cocked his head in thought, studying his (former?) commanding officer. Did he care? Did he regret his decision? Was that actually his explanation for Chase leaving? More questions than answers. After a few moments, Heibegger repeated “Dismissed, Lieutenant.”

Chase shook his head suddenly, snapping out of his trance of thought. “Of course, sir.” He walked to the turbolift, aware that the majority of the bridge crew was following him with their gaze. He stopped, turning around and gave his darkest look to the crew. Many of them turned quickly back to their station, with the exception of Winters, who kept his glance firmly locked on Chase. They gazed at each other, their eyes drilling holes to the back of each other’s skulls. Chase broke a smile, and laughed in Winters’ now very confused face.

“See you in hell, Chuck.”

Chase turned to enter the turbolift, called out “Deck Nine, Officer’s Quarters.” But then, before the doors completely closed, he turned sharply on his heel, looking once more at Winters. Chase tossed off the most mocking salute he could muster, making damn sure that Winters saw him before the turbolift doors hissed closed.

***

Chase, after finally cleansing himself with a refreshing shower, flopped himself down onto his bed. He lay there for a moment, letting the day’s events wash over him completely.

It seems like ages ago that I went crawlin’ through that damned PMS to make sure the Cap’n didn’t freeze his damn 碰撞 off, Chase thought, but now seems I’m lookin’ for a new port of call. He stood up, still trying to wring the last few knots out of his back. His thoughts drifted like a crippled starship through a nebula, seemingly aimless through a soupy mess that almost no one could understand.

Wish I had a place to call home, even if it was only every once and a while. Chase scratched his chin, bristles of a beard were starting to manifest themselves now that he’d forgone shaving for the past week. But then, he remembered something. Something he read…

Not like you got anyplace else to hang your boots.

He sighed. “Computer, begin recording message – send it along to Serenity Station when it’s done.” The computer chirped once, ready to send his message to a small little outpost light years away.

“Serenity Station, this is Lieutenant Chase Benedict… I hear you’re hiring….”

To be concluded...

So it sounds like we will be able to build Serenity Station in the game. Where shall we put it?

Somewhere a little out of the way to support all those reckless adventurers going out into the black. Preferably a little backwoods planet with good surfing, suitable atmosphere for farming hops and barley, no major strategic importance to the Borg (I'm a doctor, dammit, not a mechanic!)... anything else?

...oh, and no damn Ewoks. Critters always stealin' your stuff.

Welcome, btw, to everyone who's joined post the launch vid. Serenity Station is (as far as we've planned it) a place for Whedonheads and those who love to play support toons (medics, empaths, scientists, etc). Our primary mission on NSV-01603 is search and rescue.

Doesn't sound difficult, but as I mentioned in the OP, there's always something interesting that people need to be rescued FROM. So the basic Browncoat philosophy applies - keep flyin', and help your buddies do the same.

In game terms, we're non-exclusive, so you can affiliate to SoS and other fleets too.

Well, they seem to be geeking out so far as they can - even down to the new books and the partial-canon stuff, so I imagine that might be a good place for a beat-up old space station in need of some TLC to be parked and accidentally be thrown into adventures...

“Serenity Station, this is Lieutenant Chase Benedict… I hear you’re hiring….” He began, standing up to look at the stars warp by outside his window. “Come a week from now, I guess you could call me the former Chief Engineer of the U.S.S. Discovery. After them seven days go by, I’d hate to find myself scratchin’ my head findin’ a place to sleep every night.

“Word passin’ round the fleet says that you all’ve got some pretty edgy livin’ styles on that station of yours. Well, compared to normal Fed standards, anyway. After spendin’ a coupla years of my career living all pampered and fanciful on a starship, I start missin’ my roots – not always bein’ sure of exactly how or when some new comforts arrive for all the little folk to swarm over. A fringe station like the one you all’ve got there seems to be bein’ more than a lil’ match for my dilemma, as it were.

“Well, you all bein’ on the edge of space at the corner of no and where, I get a large notion that you could use a healthy bunch of mechanics at your beck and call. Well, me bein’ a Chief Engineer and all certainly backs my rep a bit, I suppose. But a lil’ somethin’ from the heart never hurts.”

He paused. It seemed like a good start at first. His eyes glazed over, mesmerized by the white streaks flying by.

Good a time as any for a drink.

He blinked a few times, coming out of his trance briefly to have the replicator integrate him some alcohol. A glass full of amber-ish liquid shimmered into existence in front of him, which he took an immediate gulp from.

Still don’t beat the real thing.

He returned to his spot in front of the window, looked into his beverage momentarily, and resumed.

“I know my way around anythin' that moves. Anythin' don't work the way it should, I'll fix it up good. I can mess about with any gizmo or contraption you throw my way. And when it comes to ships, I keep 'em flying. I love all the birds I got the fortune of sticking my hands into.

“I a’int the perfect person, but if the station’s rep is anythin’ near the truth, I get the notion that an underabundance of charm and regs won’t be too troublin’. Just don’t hold a gun to my head and expect me to abandon what little morals I got just ‘cause you said so. Then we might have the odd tussle here and abouts.

“So, in an attempt to make this call just the littlest bit shorter, let me wrap things up for ya. You got a job, I can do it. Don’t much care what it is. If you need someone to keep your birds flyin’, keep your guns firin’…” he paused, then added, as an afterthought, “and makin’ sure you got a warm place to sleep at the end of the day, I’d like to reckon I’m your best choice. And, well, if I a’int, give me that other 兒子一個蕩婦’s name.

“Give me word ‘soon as you make up your mind. End message.”

Chase sniffed, gazing into the bottom of his recently-guzzled glass.

“Message sent.” The computer lifelessly toned.

Now… Now we hope for an albatross.

Dr. Weaver, this is Admiral T‘Kahe of Deep Space 4. I am writing you in regards to the recent transfer of Liaison Officer Jonjah Danto. I apologize for not sending her file earlier, however, we have been busy here keeping an eye on the Romulan Empire. I would like to say that we will be missing Jonjah very much. Most of my fleet have come to know and rely on her, besides, she‘s one of the best cooks around and can make a mean drink too. Just make sure you take care of her out there in that hell hole of a wasteland. Wish you guys the best of luck out there, I know you‘ll need it. Let me know If you need anything else. Also, make note that her husband Lt. Cmdr Pyriel Danto will be transferring with her, I’ll be sending his file to you shortly.

Height: 176.7 cm
Weight: 68 kg
Hair color: Lt. Brown
Eye color: Hazel
Status: Married
Spouse: Pyriel Danto

Mother was a Vulcan. Science Officer T’Mar of the USS Crazy Horse.

Bio: Jonjah was born upon the ship USS Crazy Horse in the year 2333 and was raised mostly on Earth by her aunt Eileen. Young in Jonjah’s life, her mother, T’Mar, died in a tragic accident and her father, Chester Havens, had a hard time dealing with her death. He asked his sister to help take care of Jonjah and she agreed. Jonjah never really got to know her father because he rarely came home on visits, however, she grew up with dreams of roaming the stars. She joined Starfleet Academy and studied to become a JAG officer. After graduation she was involved in a case in which she ultimately decided to resign from her position in JAG and took up a liaison position aboard Deep Space 4. While on Deep Space 4, Jonjah became good friends with the bartender and eventually worked part time to help him out. After several years of being aboard DS-4 she met and fell in love with a half Human, half El-Aurian named Pyriel Danto. They lived aboard Deep Space 4 until recently when they heard news of the Serenity Station accepting positions. Excited by the new possibilities that Serenity Station offered, they haven’t looked back since. Jonjah is now the proud owner of “Second Chance Saloon” and looks forward to serving the hearty crews of the Serenity Fleet.

Dr. Weaver, this is Admiral T‘Kahe of Deep Space 4. I apologize for the delay on Lt. Cmdr Pyriel Danto’s file, and thank you for your patience. Things here on this side of the galaxy are quite hectic as of the moment. Other than the facts in his bio, I can’t personally tell you much about him. Lt. Cmdr Danto stays pretty much to himself, however, he is an honest and reliable man with whom some of the crew easily confide in. I can tell you however, that with his experience in the Dominion War’s Lt. Cmdr Danto is someone you’d defiantly want around out there in the fringes of the galaxy. I know the Danto’s will be a valuable asset to your crew. Take care of yourselves and don’t forget…if they bring the fight…give’em hell!

Simon Tam Avatar (clicky) (http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d191/radicalbunny/uss_ariel.gif)

I gave him USS Ariel (because of the episode where he proves he's considerably more of a criminal mastermind than Mal - one of my favourites, as it's got the introduction of the Blue Sun mob, Jayne attempting to be sneaky, and Mal's favourite motivational technique on display). It's also quite a good ship name anyway - Prospero's flying servant from The Tempest.

Of course, USS Overstuffed Shirt With No Regard For Winsomely Cute Geeky Mechanics or USS No, This Is What Going Mad Feels Like would have been more appropriate, but didn't fit.

Put it together from odd bits in Photoshop. The "laurel wreath" is from the official Federation logo, the Caduceus (Wand of Hermes - aka the double-snake medical symbol...hey, you learn something new every day!l) is readily available clip art shrunk down, and a few other bits I did myself. Font is Federation, available from DaFont.com along with other trekkie resources, just italicised.

Once I've got my site up I'll upload the PSD (builder) file so you can have a play.

Sure thing. Have edited the list.

Speaking of which - everyone should read the FAQ over at www.startrekonline.com/faq/ as this gives a few hints about how the career structures are going to work.

Remember, even the lowliest redshirt will get their own craft.

As for Serenity Station itself, I'm beginning to think that parking ourselves a short distance from that "unclaimed" PvP zone might be an idea - to go pick up stranded vessels and bring them back to the edge of civilisation.

"Aye", but provisionally. Like everything else, we don't know exactly what the game mechanics will allow us to do. Maybe we have to plonk a station down near a certain type of planet or some sort of nebulous crap like that. As with everything else, more info is needed before we start chiseling things in stone.

I'm trying to think of a good way to integrate the "all the grunts get their own ship" mechanic into our plans. But, like I just said, more info is a definite must.

Stepping down from the shuttle, Lt. Chiro Cassul found himself aboard a Oberth class starship that had entered stationary orbit around Deep Space Station K-6.

"Ah, you must be Lt. Chiro Cassul, glad to welcome you to the Freyja." Commander Richard Green saluted.

"Thank you, sir!" Chiro saluted back, a sign of puzzlement on his face. Normally a captain would be present to welcome new crew members but then again maybe the commander was the captain of this vessel.
"Sorry for not notifying you ahead of time, command thought it would be interesting if they just sent us without notice to pick you up." Green chuckled.

"I see... I was getting worried that my request got lost in the system like usual." Chiro exclaimed worriedly. This was very unusual. Even if command was slow they always sent orders ahead of time incacse the person they were picking up gets sent on duty when the ship arrived.

"I am certified as a pilot for Oberth class ships sir, I'll look forward to piloting one again."

"Actually, you won't be piloting it." Green grinned, you'll be captaining it."

"Sir???" Chiro nearly dropped his bag. What kind of joke was this?

"I'm not the commanding officer of this vessel, I'm just delivering it to you. We're short on captains lately and this ship needs one. She's going to be part of the Firefly Fleet which I'm sure you know all about since you requested reassignment to it. Right now she's got a skeleton crew but they know what to do."

"Sir, normally command goes to the highest on the ship with command training..."

"And that would be you." Green beamed, though the smile was more along the lines of 'Thank god!' Sweat began to cross Chiro's forehead. This was most unexpected...

"In any case, I need to transfer to the USS Deneb, we're shipping out towards the Deep Space 9 for patrol, take good care of the ship!" Green spoke as he walked past Chiro into the shuttle which quickly lifted off and exited the docking bay.

Perplexed, Chiro entered the hall connected to the docking bay and found a young female Lt. Jr grade officer standing at attention. "Sir, welcome aboard!" She saluted.

Chiro hesitantly saluted "Thank you... you are..."

"Lt. Jr grade, Sai Himemiya sir, I'm your first officer." She beamed.

'First officer? Oh great, so I am the highest ranking on this ship now' Chiro thaught. "I am Lt. Chiro Cassul... I'm apparently the captain of the ship."

"That is correct. If you will follow me, I'll show you to the bridge."

It took then about 10 minutes to get there, through the endless detours of areas closed off for maintenance. There was definitely something about this ship that made him uneasy. Something oddly familiar. Sure he had been on a Oberth class ship before but something else was nagging at him. Stepping off the turbolift, he scanned the bridge only to bink and do so again.

"Himemiya... is it normal for a bridge like this to not have a captain's chair?"
"Um... actually no it's not. They said they were going to have the chair shipped to Serenity Station to have it installed when you arrived." She answered nervously. Chiro turned his eyes towards the commemoration plate next to the turbolift. USS Freyja it read... but it was too new a look for a ship that isn't suppose to have gone through refitting.

"Tell me Himemiya, how many crew members do we have?"

"About 22 sir, skeleton crew, all Lt. Jr grade or lower sir. Only myself and the chief engineer has command training right now. Most everyone here is on their maiden voyage."

"What??? Maiden voyage? You can't be serious." Chiro exclaimed.

"Sir, most of us are fresh out of the academy..." Sai continued. This was unheard of. A bunch of wet-noses out of the academy and he was the only experienced crew member. "Actually most of us couldn't get postings to other ships because of grades and such. We barely made it out of the academy in one piece.

Sighing, Chiro continued to look over the bridge. "Do we have a doctor incase someone gets injuried, I hope they have some type of field training." He asked but somewhere deep down inside, he knew there wouldn't be.

"No sir, we're dependent on the EMH. Would you like to meet him?" Sai asked. Chiro nodded and Sai spoke up. "Computer, Activate Emergency Medical Hologram."

Before then an image of a doctor in a previous starfleet uniform popped into existence.

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency." It's spoke out, then looked between the two officers on the bridge. "Please state the nature of the medical emergency." He stated even more annoyed.

"Wait... your an EMH mark I..." Chiro began to question.

"Yes I am... were you expecting something else?" the doctor said with an annoyed expression.

"But they said they upgraded all the ships to the Mark III and Mark IV versions..." Chiro stated, still in a bit of disbelief.

"Yes well apparently I got overlooked so deal with it. Is there an medical emergency or not." The doctor was beginning to tap his feet.

"There might be in a minute." Chiro leaned against the bulkhead, not sure what to make of it then he realized that he was in the bridge. "Wait, when did they install holo-emitters on the bridge?"

"Actually that would be Ensign Arturia Valeth, she's the one who thought it might be something important to have. Most of the major decks have them now." Sai beamed with the first bit of good news she could give him.

"Look... if there isn't an emergency then please deactivate me." The doctor interrupted.

"Computer, deactivate Emergency Medical Hologram." Chiro chimed quickly before the doctor became more annoyed.

"As the doctor began to disappear, the dawn of recognition passed over his face and pointed at the Lt. "Wait i reme..." and then disappeared completely.

"Might as well check to see if there's even a captain's room." He walked across the bridge to the door leading to it.

"Um... sir, it's not ready yet..." Sai chirped nervously. Chiro turned to look at her as the door opened. When he turned around, all he could do was stare in disbelief. There wasn't anything in there but the bare desk and a chair that had been stripped of it's cushions. There wasn't even a computer terminal there either.

"Right... were they suppose to finish refitting at Serenity Station?" Chiro asked, knowing full well what the answer would be.

"That's what we were told." Sai said nrevously.

Frustrated with the turn of events, Chiro spoke up. "Computer, what were the last major repairs done tot his ship."

"The last repairs on log are emergency repairs to the power conduits along decks 5-11 after engaging in a battle with Romulan warbirds on stardate *zzzt* and repairs on *zzzt* were *zzzzttt* BY captain *zzzzttttt* *zzzzttt*..."

The computer voice started go haywire and Chiro punched a few buttons on the control panel to kill it.

"Well good to know she actually flew right before... I don't get it, why would they send this ship out when it's not fully repaired. Any ideas Himemiya?"

"Please sir, call me Sai, only my instructors called me Himemiya, and I have no idea."

"Right, see if you can get engineering to fix the computer, we need that working right if we hope to get her going further without escort." Chiro punched a few more buttons before a far panel near the turbolift lit up and exploded sending sparks flying everywhere. "Son of a...! Are you okay?" He shouted to Sai, who had hit the deck as soon as the sparks started flying.

"I'm okay sir!" She called from her prone position, looking back at the panel that was the communications block.

"Damn, they could at least have checked the power grid up here before sending her out." Chiro walked over to the now burned out panel and noticed the plake had fallen off the wall. That was never a good sign. He picked it up to return it to the wall when he noticed another plaque already sitting there, this one more aged with burns and damages. Sai was behind him looking at it too. Carefully he wiped the soot off the plaque and gaped in disbelief. It read, USS Solstice. Chiro let go of the new plaque and it hit the deck floor with a audible clank and turned towards the piloting controls then signed as he realized just what ship he was on.

"Sir? What's going on?" Sai looked perplexed.

"I think we just got screwed over by someone in command. I can take my guess who... this ship is suppose to be in the mothball fleet. It was designated unsalvageable after a scuffle with the Romulans a few years ago. I was the ensign pilot on duty during the fight." He pointed to the console, sighing, he picked up the plaque and stared at it. It has false engineer names and start dates of launch and tapped the plaque against his legs.

"Sai... go down to engineering... i suggest the Jeffery's tubes as I won't trust the turbolifts right now and see if we can get the most basic things working so we don't end up with injuries a plenty. I'm going to see if i can get this communications panel working again to see if we can get some parts and supplies so we can be underway. I'm sure K-6 won't mind. We got a bunch of shines in storage dock 4 that's been sitting there for a while now." Chiro pulled the burned communications panel off the wall and stared at the mess of wires. "Christ... this is going to be a long journey..."

TO BE CONTINUED...

[OOC] With the way they're handling the captains, I thought I'd play on the idea. I had a tough time with naming the ship since I wanted to avoid stepping on any cannon ships and knowing my luck I just might have.

Neither do they have telephone-pole-sized spears, whereas we have shields. Which ought to reduce pilot wastage a bit.

I can just see it now... some dud torpedo pierces the viewscreen and pins me to the pilots seat. *shivers* Knowing the condition our ship is in, that just might happen. I'd better sit in the navigator's console just in case.

(OOC: Sorry, maybe I should have posted a link to the story rather then the actual story ^^; )

OOC: Count me in. Not sure what I want to play yet, but as a long time browncoat and ST fan this looks pretty cool. Probably looking at an Akira Class for myself though what ever the ship featured on this link (http://www.startrekonline.com/gallery/screenshots/?img=39784) is pretty darn cool too.

I typically play "leader/support" or "defender/tank" personnel in RP games so think I should fit in well. Though the Akira is a "warship" I see it's extensive shuttle bays to be used for rapid SAR and evacuations while the ship itself covers the "strategic withdrawal". Should be fun.

Colonel Steven ShadowFax To Captain/Dr. Amy Weaver,

My Name Is Colonel Steven ShadowFax, (Formally Known as Steven Ayres), Captain of the [i]'U.S.S Britain', a Federation starship of the United Federation of Planets, formally known as the 'U.S.S Serenity', Galaxy Class Starship.

I commanded the Serenity for 8 years and it was eventually destroyed in the Dominion War, In Particular My ship was disabled by the infamous Breen Energy Dampener in the Battle of the Chin'Toka system.
Starfleet graced myself and my crew with a new Sovereign class ship, and I am a loyal Browncoat, and I've also served as a commanding officer for the UNSC.

When My ship in this Universe is complete and has departed the Utopia Planicia Fleet Yars, at the Descretion of the Cryptic Ship Command, my vessel, my crew and myself will gladly be apart of your fleet, Captain.

Please keep me aprised of any further information, developments or other fleet or anything that would provide useful to me,

I have worked alongside other decorated Officers and Captains also; Jean-Luc Picard, Benjamin Sisko, Malcom Reynolds, and Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

Colonel ShadowFax Out

Any information on Star Trek: Online and when it comes out, is also apprecited, I can't wait for this game:)

Definatly in the Bajoran Sector...

Maybe DS9 has been renamed 'Serenity Station', Being in Control of the Wormhole would be a tactical advantage

DrAmyWeaver
08-14-2008, 01:51 PM
Welcome aboard Mr_Phazon and Col. Shadowfax, good to see the Britain back in our waters. You've been added to the manifest.

OOC: out of the way is one thing, but if there's a zone where PVP is active and we're right next to it we ought to get a decent amount of passing trade (or, ass dragging backwards out of a pile of Klingons type trade). No good being a rescue station with no-one to rescue. The "unexplored" (aka EVE lowsec) sectors would also be interesting, so long as we're not somewhere PVP-enabled. Having the station blown up because no-one logged in that particular day isn't favourite.

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 01:51 PM
Ya, DS9 would make things shinier, but I ain't no dreamer. The badlands is my guess.

shapeless79

Yeah and if they lump all countries/continents onto a single server I see it being even less of a problem because all time zones should be covered :)

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 02:10 PM
I know I've said before I would like to be a tactical officer, but I could offer you another service. I could be the station's cargo ship. I would transport any cargo that could use some relocation.

Steve88
08-14-2008, 02:22 PM
I think A main base of operations, space station, maybe several in one spot or perhaps if it's possible, maybe a colonly with orbital facilities, and space stations, shipyards etc would be good, as well as the bulk of the fleet, and praps going off exploring and establishing outposts and other stations wherever to obtain either new technologies, resources, territory whatever will also be good.

But it's all academic, because the game is so new and we have no exact idea what, where or how much we are going to be able to explore.

As in terms of officers, I think it would be good also to have each of us as many people already have mentioned, a specific internet in a field, science, tactical etc and our own ships, but we'll see how that goes, looking at how many people are in or want to be in OUR fleet :), I think it's going to be good and yeah I think the risk of losing a station due to no one being on is unlikely too :)

Steve88
08-14-2008, 02:26 PM
One thing I did pick up on in the video, was the mention of the Borg and I was thinking how they were going to manifest themselves into the game...

One thing to always bere in mind when exploring and befriending new bizarre and wonderful species, is caution.... It would be terrible to establish space stations, colonies, fleets and planets to suddenly have the borg turn up and take it all away and in turn assimilate us or what we achieved....

Maybe assign larger vessels in bulk to more dangerous or uncharted areas, and to constantly keep an eye on the wormhole, the Dominion was defeated, but who knows what the founders, Jem'Hadar, Vorta or even the Cardassians would have gotten up to in the 30 years....

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 02:30 PM
I don't think the Dominion will mess with the Federation for a while, but the Borg are certaintly on the move even after the Federation has beat them down several times. All I have to say, is that there is no shortage of ugly out there.

DrAmyWeaver
08-14-2008, 02:36 PM
I don't think the Dominion will mess with the Federation for a while, but the Borg are certaintly on the move even after the Federation has beat them down several times. All I have to say, is that there is no shortage of ugly out there.

So there's no shortage of people who mess with ugly either - and that means plenty of work for us to do.

And I'm not letting Cardassian tailors on the station. Not even plain, simple ones with no ambitions.

Steve88
08-14-2008, 02:40 PM
So there's no shortage of people who mess with ugly either - and that means plenty of work for us to do.

Can't wait!

I do hope to emplore the more Prime Derective approach the federation holds, as well as making peace wherever possible, if the Dominion, The Borg, Cardassians, Romulans or even the Klingons turn on us, the more allies we have the better, not that we would be ill-equiped at self defence, strive for peace more than conquest, freedom.... but sometimes freedom has to be fought for, and defended.... definatly up to that!

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 02:47 PM
Heres to freedom. So as far as exploration, where are we going? The Gamma Quadrant? The unexplored fringes of the Alpha Quadrant? Or what if we could somehow quickly get to the Delta or Beta quadrants? So many possibilities, so little gorram time!

shapeless79
08-14-2008, 02:48 PM
Getting awful crowded in my sky...

I think and of course this is only speculation on my part, that vigilance will of course have to play a part, also imo I think the Borg have become more tactical and somewhat less random over the years, I doubt anyone would attract them straight away, unless it was a pre-defined event, because we would present no significant threat and no significant tactical value until we started to get our game on. The same goes for all the other 'enemies' out there as well I guess...

Steve88
08-14-2008, 02:55 PM
To invade another territory or want to eliminate something, yeah it definatly has to play a threat, or a target.. particular for the borg, and anyone else it will more likely be as competition, or fear that an "enemy" is more powerful than them, and could overthrow them...

Expanding a Federation is a good idea but mainting freedom of will and letting planets decide if they want to join or not is the main issue also, gorram alliance!

Defence will stil remain important too, as important of course, perhaps we shud consider the possibility of other fleets in Starfleet or perhaps another empire, race or other potential ally, calling on us for help and offering benefits and re-wards (as Jayne would say)...

Prosperous thought!:)

shapeless79
08-14-2008, 02:57 PM
Certainly I don't see the problem in forming alliances with other Player Fleets, that's probably a given for a game of this magnitude. As for calling on other NPC races/fleets/etc.., anythings possible I guess. Be nice to see if they tried to implement it in some way...

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 02:58 PM
Oh, trust me the Borg are gonna come pretty soon. Earlier I said the Dominion wasn't going to be a threat, but I've been thinking. 30 years after the last trek movie is quite a while after the Dominion war. 30 years to regroup and rebuild. And then some artical somewhere said that the main antagonists will probably be some new empire from the Beta Quadrant. It is indeed gettin crowded up there. But hey, no one can take the skies from us. Not without gettin at least a broken nose.

Steve88
08-14-2008, 03:09 PM
A new Beta Quadrant Race is extremely likely, and yeah 30 years is a long time, mroe than enough time for old foes to regroup or rebuild, and indeed for more territory to be charted, more species made aware of Starfleet, some hostile, some friendly...
Exciting and daunting to know

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 03:29 PM
So what race do you guys want to be?

shapeless79
08-14-2008, 03:35 PM

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 03:39 PM
I'll probably go Andorian or Klingon.

Steve88
08-14-2008, 03:41 PM
I thought about this, Definatly Human, Earth.
But I like the Idea of the Trill... and Joining of trill, a 300 year old symbiont, memories, skills and life experience.
I would like to think of myself as Human but maybe one third Trill, having a human and trill parent, etc etc, the only Trill feature being I am able to be joined with a symbiont, but I don't have other trill features such as the spots etc. I would be all Human in every other aspect.

Mr_Phazon
08-14-2008, 04:14 PM
Weird....but sounds cool.

DrAmyWeaver
08-14-2008, 11:33 PM

Even though I'm going with the Federation I think I might choose to play as a klingon. Or human. Or Breen if possible.

And IMO I hope the Dominion are a decent size threat. I've always thought that they're the best race to go to war against. And 30+ years since their defeat is more than enough time to regroup for a race made up of clones.

Steve88
08-15-2008, 01:25 PM

But I'm an Animator in training, so I can sympathise with the amount of work, and time a video game takes to create.

I hope I have enough time to play the game and participate in our fleet enough.

We'll definatly need a site, our own specific customisation for something too, plaques etc, should be cool!:)

I am currently playing eve online right now, been playing since 2002. I remember when I saw the previews and heard about the game in 2000, It came out 2 years later. It was the closest MMORG to star trek that was out. I'm glad finally that the true star trek online is finally coming out. I think I can wait a year, I just hope I'm not disappointed. Yeah a website with LCARS is easy to setup now a days. Maybe it's not to early to get something planned and in the works.

Cheers,

Cool, I've never played an MMORPG before, I couldn't see the fascination in World of Warcraft or anything, and anyone I knew or talked to who played it were always a little strange... lol
I've always been into FPS games mainly, I suppose the closest RPG game to an MMORPG I've played is, Oblivion... but not very close.

Star Trek Legacy was a HUGE letdown in my oppinion, the game was good, but it needed so much more, and had so much potential.... oh well:(

You can say that again. Legacy is a good game, but when you get down to it, it's pretty hollow. They could have done so much more with that game.

You can say that again. Legacy is a good game, but when you get down to it, it's pretty hollow. They could have done so much more with that game.

Definatly, I think it's because they rushed it to get it out, it was delayed several times near the end, I've noticed it tends to Crash on the Xbox in Skirmish Mode when A lot is going on, Like if a Borg Cube Explodes along with several other ships, it freezes up.... which was always irritating.

It's good, worth playing but didn't meet expectations.

Out of 10, I would give it 5.5

Mr_Phazon
08-15-2008, 03:13 PM
That game definatley has some bugs. I have it for the PC. I probably have the fastest computer in my whole area, but the game still freezes up a lot. It's definately the game, not the system running the game.

That game definatley has some bugs. I have it for the PC. I probably have the fastest computer in my whole area, but the game still freezes up a lot. It's definately the game, not the system running the game.

Yeah, I heard it was even more glitchy on the PC, with clumsy controls too? I originally thought it was my Xbox causing the problem, but no other game froze up, GTA4, lots of graphics, Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Oblivion (made by same people as Legacy), All of which In my oppinion have to deal with a lot more going on, and a lot more graphics and content than Legacy and none of those ever freeze up...
So I leant towards the game itself freezing... Shame...

Anyway, back to Star Trek Online!

I'm really curious and In awe to how much exploring area there will be, from what We've all heard and seen, it's going to seem to be ever lasting... amazing! I can't wait to fly through the Wormhole, into the Gamma Quadrant, Maybe Dock at D29, Hopfully which will have an interior also...

Gona be soooo good!!!

Mr_Phazon
08-15-2008, 03:22 PM
Ya, it'll be pretty intense as far as exploring. Ok, so I have a question. Who would you have as a Tactical Officer: a joined Trill, or a Betazoid?

Steve88
08-15-2008, 03:38 PM
A tough question, A Joined trill, assumably one with a host which has experiences 5 previous lifetimes or more, with 200 or more years of experience, or a Batazoid with the ability to sence, read emotions or perhaps gain knowledge of an advarsary's plan....

Hmm, a tough question, indeed....

I would want both species present on my bridge, perhaps the Trill with the rank of Lt. Commander as my tactical officer, and a Betazoid as my Right Hand Man/Woman.... Merging both Jean-Luc's and Ben Sisko's senior officer species.... I believe would be very effective and invaluble on the bridge of any starship.

How about yourself?

Mr_Phazon
08-15-2008, 03:50 PM
I would go with a joined Trill myself. Maybe no mind readin there, but lots of experiece.

@Steve88 - I'm pretty much a photoshop amateur, just picking things up as I go. What would be cool though is if you could take the emblem, just the ^ not the circle, from DrAmy's banner and convert that into a layer I can put on the plaque in place of the normal ^ that is on there. That would pretty much make them all unique now wouldn't it hehe :)

Steve88
08-16-2008, 02:34 AM
What part of the emblem sorry? Not the inner gold circle, but the outer part what looks like feathers (probably a correct name for it? and put that into a layer for you?

From left to right
Dele Seiwari, Ops Officer, Lagos, Nigeria, Earth
Dr. Nurvek, Medical Officer, Vulcan
Poppy Harpswell, Science Cadet, New Darwin Colony
Qiuyan Zhang, Executive Officer, Chengdu, China, Earth
Truman C. Davis, Captain (from Science Branch), Boston, United States, Earth
Tyr'el Shurat, Engineer, Andoria
Paulo Oliviera, Conn Officer, Rio De Janero, Brazil, Earth
Sari Nikkanen, Tactical Officer, Petsamo, Finland, Earth

Didn't enter ranks as I am not sure how that will work in the game, but am now leaning toward a younger less experienced crew that we can see grow. Expect Captain Davis to be about a Lt. Commander, Zhang and Nurvek Lts, Oliveira and Shurat LT JGs, Nikkanen and Seiwari Ensigns and Wainwright a first or second class cadet (3rd or 4th year) aboard for the summer break to conduct research as part of her thesis. Most likely going to start off with a Nova-Class (USS Aphelion ) and grow from there.

I simply did a general search for "Star Trek" on the website you gave me, and it found 7 pages worth of goodies haha, I did download more but some of them didn't work, they are there in the game and can be selected but don't appear in the game, which is a shame.

My game also wouldn't run after I had put loads of custom content into it, so I had to delete a lot of it, thankfully the uniforms, ranks, insignias, interioir walls and some objects still worked though, it is really cool

Greetings!

If you're still signing folks up, count me in!

I'm a physician by training and a military officer by trade, but I can do just about anything. Know enough science to tell if a rock is worth something or how to blow just about anything up. Can do basic repairs, and change stations on most comm panels. I'm a damn good bartender, and know that no war was won without reliable logistics. I've been a leader of men in a time of war, and broken the law a time or two. Hell, I've even been a minister during my short time in the 'Verse. Whatever you need, I can do it--someone out there might be able to do it better, but if they ain't here you can count on me.

In the meantime, our enemys our out there, bunch of ri shao gou shi bing (Chinese for "pile of sun-baked dog poo," for those of you less refined). I aim to misbehave, but might as well make sure we're in it for a good cause. Let me know how I can help!

I simply did a general search for "Star Trek" on the website you gave me, and it found 7 pages worth of goodies haha, I did download more but some of them didn't work, they are there in the game and can be selected but don't appear in the game, which is a shame.

My game also wouldn't run after I had put loads of custom content into it, so I had to delete a lot of it, thankfully the uniforms, ranks, insignias, interioir walls and some objects still worked though, it is really cool\

A lot of the stuff on that site requires you use some or all of the expansions. If you do not have them they may not all work. I found a great set of ships (residential lots) but they require all the additional stuff. I only have nightlife university and free time so can not try them out. I may do so in the future.

Yeah, that might have been the problem needless to say I got the game working again, no problem and I still have lots of star Trek extras in it, I've only got the original copy of the sims 2.

On that site you can set your user profile to only show mods for the expansions you own. It comes in handy, but sometimes it is nice to see other options.

I may fiddle around with a few more crews to see if I can get the team I really want but the USS Aphelion crew seems pretty good for a first whack. T. C. Davis actually kinda looks like a idealized and simmed version of me. :P

So, any room for the USS Strathcona in here somewhere? As her acting captain (don't ask) I'm willing to have her assigned to your cause. 'Course, it's just a refitted Reliant, makes her a mite persnickety, but I do love her. Question is, could you use an Andorian Command officer? I've mostly got experience with Logistics and I did a stint as a lowly Red Shirt, but I aint stupid.

I've just been informed from Starfleet about changes to my assinged vessels.
(Partly as to Why I was back at Starfleet Headquarters)

My (now)former ship the, U.S.S Britain - NCC - 74677, has now been designated my temporary command vessel, of Akira Class, Whilst My Permenant Command the U.S.S Canton, NCC - 11707, of Sovereign Class is now being constructed.

Stages 1 through to 7 of the ship's construction will be conducted at Utopia Planitia, she will then recieve a provisional launch whilst under tow to Serenity Station, where final stages 7-10 of construction will be undergone, the process will take sometime to complete as the ship is only in stage 2 of construction, so Starfleet saw it fit to grant me temporary command of the U.S.S Britain, Both of which are serving in the Firefly Fleet of Serenity Station.

((OOC: OK, I'm gonna say this once and then I'm going to leave it. I have no wish to tell you how to RP, you do whatever feels best for you, I just want to point out a few things which may make it even better and closer to the game, therefore making it easier to play-out as you play through the game. Some speculation maybe, but close speculation nonetheless;

1) We will *NOT* start as Captain in rank, only in position. Those of you who have already promoted yourselves I would suggest you demote yourself to say Lt. and your bridge crew accordingly so (I have a mixture of up and coming Lt's and Ensigns) Will save awkward in-game explanations at launch.

2) Most likely we will start with Steamrunner/Nova/Saber size craft, those of you who have taken command of Ambassador/Galaxy/Sovereign classes adjust accordingly so at game launch you aren't continually trying to explain that your Nova class is a Sovereign in disguise ;)

3) Try and break the mold a little with crew composition, cookie cutters are ok, but I prefer to push things a little. Vulcan science officers are probably 95% the norm, but what about the other 5%?

4) Learn as much about the races as possible. Humans are easiest to write for in my experience, but to write as a vulcan or a bajoran or klingon? Research is the key and a safer alternative to carrying a Bat'leth and killing random people for dishonoring your family ;)

Once again I don't mean to tell anyone how to suck eggs, but this is important stuff and with a few little tweaks we can make this fleet even better :)

There probably is more, but it's mostly common sense at the end of the day))

Steve88

Well my Soverign class ship is only in the early stages of construction, so it's probably not going to be in service for a very long time yet, and my command on my current vessel is only provisional, Starfleet will continue to assign me various different vessels for me to command, prefferably smaller vessels, they are easier and need more experienced captains, plus It will be easier for me to command smaller ships until mine is ready.

And yeah, I know we'll start off with small ships, hopfully we will get larger vessels fairly quick too...

shapeless79
08-19-2008, 06:00 AM
And yeah, I know we'll start off with small ships, hopefully we will get larger vessels fairly quick too...

I hope not, or at least not to quickly, agreed it should be less of a gap between between smaller craft, but I personally think we should have to wait a reasonable amount of time between say Ambassador and Galaxy type classes, for example.

How would you class a Defiant, would you out it with the same size, less powerful ships or with the larger same power-esque type ships? Or would you make it a special one or two per server only type award as it can't really be categorized along with other federation ships?

Just something I was thinking...

Steve88
08-19-2008, 06:15 AM
Well, I would class it as a small ship, but powerful... with the cloaking abilities it's probably one of the most powerful small vessels in the fleet, Not THAT strong though, a nova class vessel is probably O.K, mainly for planetary research, it wasn't specifically designed for combat, so it may struggle in a firefight against an equal ship or more powerful. But still a decent ship

I was hoping we would start around an Lt. Cmdr. in game but plan on starting my character's back story RP at Lt.

2) Most likely we will start with Steamrunner/Nova/Saber size craft, those of you who have taken command of Ambassador/Galaxy/Sovereign classes adjust accordingly so at game launch you aren't continually trying to explain that your Nova class is a Sovereign in disguise ;)

I want to spend most of my time with a Nova Class ship (USS Aphelion) so that should be fine with me. I might want to upgrade to a Luna Class (from the USS Titan series, currently leaning toward USS Proteus as the ship name) if/when it is available, but still sticking with mid sized explorers. However the back story is going to start on a simple runabout (USS Saco)

3) Try and break the mold a little with crew composition, cookie cutters are ok, but I prefer to push things a little. Vulcan science officers are probably 95% the norm, but what about the other 5%?

So far my revamped crew is packing a Vulcan Chief Medical officer with horrible bedside manor, but great skill, a bolian engineer, a bajoran or andorian XO, and a bajoran or andorian security officer (opposite of the XO but kinda trite). My ops is hopefully going to be a Caitian or a custom race if I can do a good sims mesh for them.

4) Learn as much about the races as possible. Humans are easiest to write for in my experience, but to write as a vulcan or a bajoran or klingon? Research is the key and a safer alternative to carrying a Bat'leth and killing random people for dishonoring your family ;)

Agreed but the counter balance is that in some ways you are writing about yourself. I think this is a toss up. Personally I prefer a human captain with varied race pets. I thought about playing an andorian but that would be a more combat oriented character and I am more of an explorer/support guy than a combat junkie

PS I found the "All good things..." "Visitor" "Endgame" uniforms on sims 2. The new crew will be trying out those duds. Hopefully they will make in to the game since they the cannon uniforms for this era.

Star Trek and Firefly are both primarily about their characters. The only thing that really doesn't mesh between the two series is the technology, and since Firefly was never about the technology, you don't lose anything by transporting it into Star Trek's universe.

The political situations are different, but that's where we have to exercise our imaginations. For anyone who needs a starting point, the Brown Coats have an obvious spiritual cousin in Star Trek's Maquis (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Maquis). I wouldn't be surprised if some of the ship captains in the vicinity of Serenity Station are children and/or survivors of the Maquis who escaped the border worlds before the Dominion massacres. I wouldn't be taken aback at all if Serenity Station weren't partly founded by former Maquis lookin' to start over on a new frontier...

Sometime ago there was this "man" that thought Star Trek and Halo combined well together, can someone please explain why Firefly is any different for i do not see it!

U have to realize the characters we grew to love in all of the Star Trek series were the Main characters mostly. What about the behind the scene's guys? The cargo runners, the transport only ships, the contract guys who build ships? Take a look at some of the earlier episodes of TNG where they explored the outer colonies. Those colonies were a lot like the people u see in firefly; small groups of people struggling to make it out there on the edge of the galaxy. The show Firefly explores the lives of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and now make a living on the outskirts of the society, as well as the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In addition, it is a future where the Alliance rules much of space, not unlike the Federation. As far as bad guys go, take a step back and really look at the Borg. Are they not similar to the Reavers? Sure they don't wear your face, but they do steal your individuality and assimilate you into the collective, in a sense...just like the reavers cannibalizing you? So come on now. Do some research hun...Star Trek and Firefly are a lot more closely related than you seem to know. They tell similar stories, it's just that one series focuses on the main guys of the Federation, and Firefly focuses more on the background characters. In the end if you still disagree, no one said you had to fly in the firefly fleet, and you don't have to come to Serenity Station if you don't want too. We're on the edge of the world hun....that kind of gut busting action isn't for everyone. Stay in the mainstream if you like....but keep your eye in the skies. We just might be there saving your backside one day. ;)

Then Akira After that and eventually Soveriegn class.

In my opinion/speculation will probably go along the lines of ;

Steamrunner/Saber/Nova -> Defiant/Nebula/Miranda -> Ambassador/Akira/Intrepid -> Galaxy/Sovereign etc...

There are so many ways it could be handled, not sure if I grouped the ships correctly even, but it seems sensible :)

Steve88
08-19-2008, 03:26 PM
Yeah, I would agree with your speculation there seems very accurate, as well as those being the standard class vessels, obviously as we know there will be a large opening for user custimasation as well, and probably a lot more vessels to chose from also.

Should be a lot of fun when the game is eventually released!:)!

I would like a TOS era Klingon Battle Cruiser. It might not be the biggest or the fastest or the most powerful ship in the quadrant, but if you treat it right it will be with you for the rest of your life and it can still handle itself in a fight. I think it is better to have a ship you love than to have a ship that has the biggest guns. Get me the right crew and I can fly forever.
