If slavish allegiance to any single, puny galactic government is not to your tastes, then you should sign up here, with the Mercenary Alliance! A loose conglomeration of varying ship classes acquired through both force and guile, exploring the galaxy for our own profit and swatting aside rival fleets like the scrapheaps they are.
No wimpy Federation morals! No thickheaded Klingon aggression! No untrustworthy Romulan duplicitousness! In the Mercenary Alliance, you come and go as you please. We rarely travel en masse, so as not to put all our eggs in one basket. The only rule: always help out a fellow Mercenary if required.
Eventually, if the game allows, we'll build our own Starbase, which should somehow incorporate the word Awesome into its title. Failing that, we'll take someone else's.
So, if you're only it in for the money and the pride.... the Mercenary Alliance is the place for you!
Plus, we get all the chicks. And the Orions. (Have you seen what the Orions get up to at parties...?)
