I have a few main questions that id like you to answer please.

1. General location in AU or NZ (state will do, but if you wish to be more specific thats fine).
2. Anything else that you might think we'll need as a fleet.

well thats it.

We'll have our own fleet website very soon guys! Commander_Daedelus is getting it arranged this very moment!
HOWEVER! we have a need for anyone who is good with graphics to help build up some banners and images for the website.

You are totally cutting some of us off over here in Japan and in the East =p. I had mentioned a Dark Diamond Fleet as well for Oceanic and PST players but it will be interesting to see what you develop.

Commander Daedelus, we can run out of the Outback Gamers forum if you'd like. I can setup access for all pretty sharply, and its an established website for a number of MMO's and other games.

But i'd have to admit that a *FLEET* website would have a certain amount of prestige of our own......

In which case i think we'd all better get to work on some startrek-australiana images to have as banners and such....

I eventually remembered to join up... (just about had enough of NF... for now)

I live in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria (fly 130km east of Melbourne until you hit the cooling towers).

As for a suggestion of a Start Fleet name, I'd like to keep ANZAC, but the AC needs to be something in the StarFleet universe. There is clearly a StartFleet Command, so we can make the C = command. Now for the A.

ANZAC = Australia New Zealand Absurb Command
ANZAC = Australia New Zealand Admin Command
ANZAC = Australia New Zealand Alliance Command

The last one is perhaps the best of the 3 (if we are a serious bunch of players).

Bugger.... Fleet name is settled... so I better think about the fleet tag.

As we are supposed to be an Aussie & NZ fleet, we should not use something that is just Australian, so that rules out the Aussie flag, the kanga. The red poppy is not just for us to use for Remembrance Day. The southern Cross is used by other countries, especially them ther ones that are south of the equator. Holden car symbol is a bit commercial.

So what do Australia and New Zealand have in common that would be unique to 'us'? Well ANZAC is both common and unique to both countries. According to the Australian War Memorial, ANZACs were allowed to wear the letter "A" on the shoulder of their uniforms.

Strangely, have a look at the StarFleet emblem, it is a bit like an A.

I suggest we have a Capital A as our fleet tag (both in keeping with the first offical symbol to identify the ANZACs and as it is close to the StarFleet symbol)

I just had a look at the "Australian Star Trek fan club - Starship Mawson", who also appear to be forming a fleet for this game. Will be interesting to see how they go, given they already are an organised group.

Perhaps we should consider some sort of informal treaty with them?

I'm willing to open up a comms channel to them (Does that make me a communications officer?).

I used to play ST RPG, I was Medical Officer and progressed to Chief Medical Officer.

as of today we have 12 members. and I dont think we should rule out being part of a larger fleet. however i would insist on Eureka Sqn having its own independant authority in-house. as well as own website and independant image....

It's so obvious but I think it sounds great and will attract alot of Oceanic gamers to want to be in our fleet! My friend who's making the banner loves it as well. Let me know what you guys think. He's already started and by the sounds of it, it's going to look great. I hope you like it :)

I think that you should, for the moment at least, stay as you are and not join a larger fleet. Lets see how many members we get first and how the game system pans out so we would know if it was necessary.

In regards to Star Trek, I have just started to get into it. I saw some late night eps of TNG when I was a kid a number of years ago and so thats where i've started my addiction; by getting through TNG. So far i'm into the second series and i'm loving it. It's so good having all the other series waiting to be watched!

I really like the concept of this one too! What about tweeking it to:
1) make the star trek (A) logo the same height as the other letters
and 2) less of the shimmery effect on the ANZAC?

Wow! I love this one, what do you guys think? It keeps the traditional old gold Starfleet feel, which ties in with the old ANZAC theme, but the blue background brings a really refreshing change. :D
I think it looks really cool with a black background, what about adding a slight gold tint to the inner of the blue, like the logo is the sun, and the sunlight is spreading out slightly?

Okay, tried out a few different things...

On the top row we have the Southern Cross logo and the Kiwi logo
Next we have the All Blacks Fern and a Map of A & NZ
And the last two are the same as the first but with slight changes, both have a glow coming from the centre and the last one a bit of a colour change.
All of them have been darkend and a bit desaturated to give them a more metal look a bit like Strik3rs

I quite like the idea you've got going there. I like that it's a little more abstract that the current favourite. I love Lords Design too, but it strikes me as Original Series, not 40 years after the events of First Contact, when the game is set.

we'll need a 2IC, to be there for when our illustrious leader is out to lunch or AFK.

a Diplomat to handle those stupid people who crop up in all MMOs

and well a Logistics Officer, to co-ordinate things within the fleet... (ie trading crew or ship items or fleet resources for things we need to function as a fleet).

thats about all i think we'd need off the top of my head, however.... things may get complicated later on, and we'll need another post or two for the fleet to aid in the normal day to day functioning... (ie: training officer, for the newbies)....

its justs a thought... kick me if you think its a dumb idea.... actually no DONT kick me! LOL... just let me know...

I reckon the older designs look awesome. So awesome my main nassell is leaking plasma. How bout we keep it the same and just alter the stars? Like have the 6 stars for the Aussie crew members and the 4 stars for the Kiwi crew. And like to define the styles, as on the flags, like bring up or down the edges on the Kiwi stars. Just an idea. So it's same but different.

I'm a writer of sorts and a salesperson, I reckon I could handle Diplomatic/ Negotiation duties...

2) Nice and Sleek, inspired by Perpetual's STO logo and captures the old (Rising Sun) and the new (Updated Delta)

4) This one came about just by messing around with a bunch of different shapes and then refining it into something presentable, lol

Must say that all the logos and banners have been great to view. Wish I had half the talent that is being shown. That said, the chosen #2 does bring to mind a slightly more futuristic adaption, in line with the "30 years later" setting of the game.

I guess now the question I have is, do we have any particular mission slant to the fleet? I mean that I've seen some that are gearing towards just pure exploration, others are more combative... It could have a bearing on the types of positions that would be required.

Like one of the earlier posts from boydyma, I could see that there is a need for logistics, and diplomacy.. how about intelligence, research/exploration, strategic command?

Any other thoughts?

yea, good call from Landwaster and the Commander, it'd be cool if we could establish a collective objective... to an extent. As peace/exploration orientated as Star Trek is, we've all wanted to fire torpedos at the Romulans at least once... I know I have.

I suppose the easiest route would be to explore and tackle what may come. I don't know. It's hard to balance the Trekkie and the Gamer.

On another note. A commendation for the Lord for churning out design after design at quality every time. We all appreciate it boss.

The Starbase is going to be a very important Fleet objective. BUT I think it is one we should really consider an afterthought. Lets have fun playing it, look in our collective virtual pockets and realise we have currency enough for 10, then worry about it.

I think a poll would be an appropriate method of determining what aspects of the game people are most likely playing for, and then focus the fleet around that. Of course, there is no reason we need to exclude anyone, and I would expect from trekkies a diverse and almost equal lust for each aspect of the game. We are probably the most diverse people on Earth so I certainly would not expect everyone to leap at Tactical only.

Play to have fun. That's really all I can say. Don't let it get too strict, but at the same time make sure you have the infrastructure to support an organised system of play.

I agree with what you have said Cuddles.

It is just sometimes helpful to have (and I hate using the words) a mission statement *shiver* to guide us in how we should be approaching the game (from a fleet perspective)

The show says "To Boldly go where no one has gone before".. simple and elegant example of what the goal of.. well.. Starfleet as a whole I guess. Anyway it's something that came to mind and we can throw it around and see what comes up.

As for people.. I agree that there is no need to exclude anyone from joining. There is great advantage in having a diverse collection (as we well know), and there will be no doubt that we will need people from every discipline. People will naturally gravitate to the areas that they like the most.. be that diplomacy, exploration or combat. I just see that we would need some people co-ordinating the efforts rather than letting everyone act as they will.

I will put it out there.. how much structure is desired.. and how regimented should we get?

Firsty i have no intention of making this fleet a hardcore group of elitists, my main goal is to have a tightknit group of "mates" who can do a range of things whether its Endgame, PvP, missions or socialising i want the atmosphere of ANZAC to remain the same regardless of what were doing.

(we should consider a Teamspeak server so we can talk between ourselves person to person)...

as a collective group you will find we will lean towards doing things together, wether that is making a starbase and maintaining it, or flogging it off for some resources so we can build a better one somewhere else, or just plain cruising around space doing *stuff*. The possibilities are endless...

We also need to think about drafting a Fleet Charter, and Law (things that ARENT allowed, ie abusing other players etc.)

i'm so seriously looking forward to this game releasing, we are going to be very organised... 42 players FTW!

Good point all round. I'm sure once we get into the mix of things it'll be easier to map out ourselves as a Fleet based on the opportunities afforded to us by the game itself. The trailer outlines quite a few possibilities, but like I said, we won't know for certain until we all get in there.

I agree with boydyma, putting some sort of charter in place will be a great idea as far as all of us knowing that by joining this fleet, we can count on other members to help out when we need it, making the experience all round as positive as possible. Cannon and lore aside, it still is a game and to know that people have you back when in a tight spot, well that's just tops. That being said, we all have our own wishes as far as things we've always wanted to do if ever given the chance to actually explore the Star Trek universe, but having this fleet in place will enhance the experience 10 fold.

And by the sounds of things thus far, it all seems like we're pretty open minded and willing to make this as enjoyable a fleet as possible. As the Commander said, a tight knit group of mates is the ideal situation for this fleet.

I would definately agree with this statement. In the spirit of the previous quotes, and the general direction of thought, would it be easier to just get a basic "Charter" out, not thinking in terms of any positions as described earlier, until more details of the actual gameplay is released? We can always come back to the question of strucutre later, as long as we have the basis of a common viewpoint, which so far from the posts seems to be existant.

Exactly. I think it'd be easier to base a charter on a really loose structure that only really comes into play when we need collaboration to accomplish certain goals. So in others words, something more along the lines of an agreement, or a call to arms if you will when the situation arises. Well I'm with you all in terms of the 'Fleet Charter' and the direction we're heading. I'd rather this not be an elitist group, if anything I think we should be the sort of fleet to try to help out anyone who needs it, a fleet which is known for its friendly, positive attitude in everything it does. And being an 'all-rounder' sort of fleet, in that we don't focus on just diplomacy, or just exploration, or just PvP or whatever else, is the best way to go I think. It'll make it easier for people to join in the future, if they see that we're not like 'oh, well you have to be good at this, or else you won't fit in' and that we're just friendly and open for all kinds of players. But yeah, I'm liking the direction we seem to be going. :)

Heres something thats been niggling at me for a while.

Lets not have ranks.

Let me clarify.

A lot of players will be joining us to just play. To enjoy themselves, play in a team environment and with friends.

The exception to my above statement is those people in a position of responsibility. If you are willing to take on keeping the website maintained, organising fleet raids and groups for missions, then you deserve a rank/title.

This way, we have enough infrastructure to support end game content and organising groups, but enough freedom to let players play as they like without having to worry about anything. I don't think anyone should be chosen for these positions (if and when we come up with them) until D-Day, so that we know the people that are picked have the time and passion to take on any extra responsibility.

Also I feel that behaviour is something that should feature in the charter. We all know what model starfleet officers are and how they act, and it's something we should all aspire towards. So acting like a complete tool and treating other players with respect is definitely something worth frowning upon.

I agree totally, as I said, I think being in our fleet should just mean that you get the support of a large group of dedicated players, and the only requirement for entry should be a willingness to act like a decent Starfleet Officer. Like I said, we shouldn't just be willing to help someone out who's 'in distress' because they're part of our fleet, I think we should be the kind of people who'd answer anyone's distress call, the sort of model starfleet officers who other players would respect.

I'd love to go out on a mission, or go and socialise on Risa, and have other players speak with admiration and respect for the way our fleet stays true to Trek's ideals.

And I'm also with Cuddles in the waiting for the game's release to determine 'ranks' and 'positions' its just too hard to try to decide these things now. :p

as for the charter, i didnt think we would be able to make any permanent decisions on fleet goals like build a starbase, or body kill 600 n00bs or anything lol, i merely ment that we should have an idea on what direction we want to go, particular race? attitudes towards others and our own members, pretty much what you guys have been saying. this will be an awesome game. i do not in any way doubt that. but it will also mean it will be open for exploitation by some moron or other who then decides to build an elitist group to go out and make life miserable for other players. I would love the support and backing of a good core group of gamers to help my butt out of a tight crack if i come across players like that. maybe if it was provoked enough.. go give em a ****** nose, so they know to leave all our other future members alone.
HOWEVER i am not asking for a charter to go out and declare war on someone cus they are a tool.

but this is something that should be open for discussion.

I see we have some words saying "Protecting Earth and Federation since 2161"

I would like us to just say "Protecting since 1915"

Not many other fleets will be able to claim that sort of heritage.

When I pushed for us to use ANZAC, I suggested that it was appropriate as it picked up the two countries on concern to us, namely Australia & New Zealand.

I see that the Fleet name is slightly wrong in that it is been shown as:

AUSTRALIAN & NEW ZEALAND ALLIED COMMAND

We are mixing up words. If we keep Australian, means pertaining to Australia, the we need to alter New Zealand so it is meaning pertaining to New Zealand (what word is it?).

Anyway, the we Fleet Web site has got the more correct name in that it says we are:
AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND ALLIED COMMAND.

But the banner for that site say Australian. I vot, change the banner text to Australia.

RP is short for role playing.

We have a freeform PBMB at the moment (Play by message board)

but most role playing (of the star trek kind) is done as PBEM (play by email).
