Galactic Civilizations 2 (http://www.galciv2.com/) has to be one of the most in-depth and fun strategy games I have ever played. In the un-modded version you can create your own ships, race and form alliances and conquer the galaxy, but heres the greatest thing.... they have an awesome Star Trek (http://forums.galciv2.com/122770) mod. In this Mod you can play as one of the eight major races including the Federation, Klingons and Dominion to name but a few. Get this game and get this mod, its so worth it!

I must confess that I never heard a word about GC II until you mentioned it.

But speaking about mods, I guess many of you know "Star Trek: Bridge Commander" - okay, if anyone now comes out yelling: "Forget about it, it's boring!" I agree, the original is quite boring.
As soon as you lay your fingers on the mod "Kobayashi Maru" your view on the game will change. They added new grafics, new ships, new I-don't-know-what-it's-called's and lots of other great stuff to make "Star Trek: Bridge Commander" worth a second try.

Their webpage is kobmaru.de (http://kobmaru.de) - don't worry, although it's a german domain the complete site is english. The site design may not look like it has much to offter, but that's just not true.

Galactic Civilizations 2 is a great game and is my BOTF for the 21st century.

First, second or both games? I only played the first one.

Now that BOTF is mentioned: I also played that one, but something was wrong either with me, the game or my PC back in these days, BOTF had lots of fun kicking me out several times for no obvious reason.
If you guys say it's simmilar I'll just check it out as soon as possible, thanks for the hind!

Definitely Bridge Commander. It lacked in gameplay, but it really captured the atmosphere imo
Actually played it recently. Havnt tried the mod though.

It pushes the system requirements a lot, but it is worth to be tried! All the new ships will stun you if you just now the original version. In my opinion it's even almost balanced!

There's an other great mod, this one is for Half Life 2: Enterprise: Temporal Cold War (http://www.enterprise-tcw.com/website). It's not finished yet but seems to be great, it's a kind of fifth season to Enterprise.

I really have to second the recommendation for GalCiv2. It really is one of the best 4x space games to come along. And the Star Trek Mod is just icing on the cake!

I'm going to have to go with 25th anniversary as well, although Bridge Commander and both Elite Forces are very fun. Star Trek needs a game with the kotor engine.

I still play EF with the RPGX mod, closest thing we have to STO at the moment.

EF2 if you play the shooters... Not so sure STO will be good for the FPS crowd
EF2 has a bunch of RPG maps, but things happened, you know the story -

Hazzard Modding has converted a full complete EF2 mission from the Single player game available as a MP online cooperative game.

I play both EF (I was in GF in the DarkHunter era and I chatted with Zephyr not long ago)
and EF2 (as KO Gilligan)

There's a reason EF2 is still expensive on EBay

Have you played the Enterprise RPG map in EF2?

But it's also not very modern anymore.
I hope Temporal Cold War is great

The original EF is full of holes, runs like crap, and the Klingons look like elves.

Do as you like it. If there are any questions: you'll find enough acitve players around here to lend you a hand...

This idea with the KOTOR engine sounds nice to me, but I don't know how stable if runs in crouwded scenes. I guess we'll see which solution Cryptic will present to us in about 12 days...

Galacitc Civilizations 2 is an EXCELLENT GAME, however, I didn't know there was a Star Trek mod out for it... I saw ships but no mod. Can someone point me to the location of this Gal Civ 2 mod, please?

Also, I too play RPG-X mod (http://rpg-x.net/) for Elite Force 1 and it is great. No, the elves do not look like Klingons and it runs pretty good if you can read a readme. Check it out! (http://rpg-x.net/)

The only thing I dislike about the Kobayashi maru mod is that ships aren't scaled to one another. They really just went to BC files, took other peoples stuff and compiled it into 1 big mod.

As for EF, Yep, I think the first RP map I played was deralict 3. As for EF2, Roleplay never really got it's chance with it. There was 1 map that would have given it a chance and that was the Nova, all 7 decks. But it was cancelled.

Ha, I liked ST:TNG A final Unity (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Final_Unity). I must admit, being point and click adventure games meant that more emphasis was given on story rather than what you can do in the game. I even enjoyed watching a friend play through DS9: Harbinger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine:_Harbinger) from start to end just to watch the story unfold!

When it comes to creating a Star Trek universe, nothing is better than BC, especially with the mods. The problem is there is just not a game that could utilized everything that has been added to BC.

forgeting about role play for a second, just the star trek games I would rank the PC games I have as:

1. Legacy
2. Bridge Commander
3. Elite Force I
4. Armada I
5. Armada II
6. Starfleet Command 3
7. Away Team
8. Elite Force II
9. Hidden Evil

Haven't played GC2, these are the originals, apart from BC that is KM 1.0.

GC2 is a fantastic game by a fantastic company that I have a huge amount of respect for. I didn't know about the Star Trek mod... I might give it a go. I can swindle and covertly run various wars in the Star Trek universe just as well as the default one I imagine. :-P

Bridge Commander... That's a game I really wanted to like - it is, more or less, exactly the type of game I was looking for at the time (and still would like). However, it just didn't come out right for me. I believe I tried the mod for it and it still just... didn't fly. Maybe I'll try it again another time.

On a note for those who were posting about Bridge Commander, being one of the best ST games. Just wanna warn anyone new to Bridge Commander, it has a mean learning curve; especially if you don't have a manual. I remember the first time I played it took me like an hour just to figure out how to get to the right planet when warping, LOL. But once you get the hang of it, it really is a gr8 ST game.

I liked Legacy the best. As far as ship control was concerned, you really felt like you were piloting a gigantic starship, while keeping the action well paced. The Borg were crazy overpowered, but I guess that's to be expected.

But Elite Force was good too. I especially like getting to go to the ship graveyard in the "Goatee Universe" from the original series.

Away Team was another that I liked, but it wasn't very good. I enjoyed the heck out of it, but I can understand why it rubbed some people the wrong way. Besides, it has a crazy number of glitches. Like the one where you can't use the Dead Body Brig thing if their feet are in a wall when they died. That was kinda aggravating.

Other than that, I've found most ST games to be sub-par at best. And even that's being generous.

The link I followed from the Original Poster to the GC2 Star Trek Mod only takes you too a COMING SOON post on the GC2 Official Site forums. I was under the impression that this mod had already had at least one release. Does someone have a working link to any version of the mod, or is this mod unreleased as of yet?

UPDATE: GC2 STAR TREK MOD LINK

I finally figured out how to access the Star Trek mod for GC2 :D When you follow the link to the GC2 Official Site forum (from the original post in this thread). It looks like everything their all says coming soon, but if you look closely their is 1 link in their that takes you to the mod's official forums. You have to register for their forums, and it can take up to a week for an admin to validate your registration. After your registration is validated you can download the mod from those forums.

I know it sounds like a big run-around but the mod is there. I wish their was a more direct way to get the mod, but if there is I haven't found it yet.

I have to concur. GS2 is simply the best turn based space strategy available bar none. The ST mod is very good to boot.

You guys might also be interested to know that Sins of a Solar Empire has a ST mod being developed for it as well and from what I have seen of it - it should rock to say the least.

2 questions:
-can I dl that mod from somewhere else? and what version (addon) of GCII does it need?
-how do I play ST:Armada on a modern machine? it has problems with sound (all sounds are interrupted) and always hangs after some time.

ST: Legacy was just ok without mods nothing special: Install the Ultimate Universe mod and shaders 3.0 mod and then it is truly awesome.

Best game without mods: ST: Armada

For anyone interested in ST mod for Sins of a Solar Empire, simply called "Sins" or commonly abbreviated as "SoaSE" a demo has been released. You can read about it ClansofSin.com (http://clansofsin.com) or on the official forums (http://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/). So far the demo has received rave reviews.

I am actually a collector of mods, some for games I haven't played in a long time, others for games I hope to own one day. I am not talking about a few mods here or there either, I have about 19.2 GB worth of Mods for 23 games. I guess I do it as a means of providing an archive for these pieces of art. I would like to provide a list of some mods that I have played or seen that may be of interest related to Star Trek:

Homeworld 2:

Star Trek: Call to Battle

Armada 2: Too many to list

Homeworld:

Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels

Sins of a Solar Empire:

Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels 2 (it is a sequel from the same people)

Nexus: the Jupiter Incident:

Star Trek: Universe at War
Star Trek: Age of War

Star Wars: Empire at War

Star Trek: Federation at War

Honorable Mention: Not a Star Trek mod but I think it is really really good that it should be mentioned here.

Homeworld 2:

Battlestar Galatica: Fleet Commander

Idunno anything about the game but the videos left me incredibly unimpressed.

Ugly phasers that are slow.
Torpedoes that are ugly and seem to be a poor quality jpg image.
Ship scales that are waaaay off, tinier Borg Cubes have never been seen before!
Ships don't even explode, they just disappear when they die like magic.
Battles are fully un-epic with the ships just slowly hovering around shooting each other, not even the Defiant did differently.

Starfleet Battles was the BEST ST game ever made.

You played against real people, in real time.

It was tactical, and you had to use your brains.

But then, it was to hard for most of you.

Not exactly sure what you mean but the Mod itself is, atm, crap. Could it be excellent? With out a doubt. Is it worth playing right now? No.... unless your desperate for a game to play that has ST skin but no actual conections other then that.
