I wanna be part of a crew with real other people playing with me, not NPCs.
Yeah, it may be difficult, but we worked around it on EVE Online all the time.
You set up times, you meet online, you have a clear command structure, and you do it.
Does anybody back me up on this?

Does anybody back me up on this?Yes and no. I like the base idea of having multiple players on one ship but I don't have the time or inclination to join a Raid Guild (or the equivalent). I'll be playing this game to have fun, not take on a second job.

You make a good point, but everyone has different levels of activity.
Hopefully they'll give people the option.

PE was not planning on doing this and they were going to make you Command the ship all by yourself i think but hopefully Cryptic will let us get a limited number on Real people on board.

Originally PE did say that this was the idea, it's just that they kept cutting things as time went on--probably because they knew time for them was running out.

it does say "You Are the Captain" but I hoping that is the sellpicts :)
but it also says "Missions will take you and your friends into space, planetside and even inside starships! "
I also want to be part of bridgecrew insted of being captain, I love the video that the old site showed where you control the enging out put and repairing systems or rerouting power in real star trek style, that is what I love to do.
having the buttom of my sreen being a consol like that and the top view of the brigde seeing part of the main screen on it

i believe this is going to be the best mmorpg game ever made if they make it right. and yes i believe you shouldn't have to start out immediately as a captain you should start out as a crewman or something or if you want go through the academy and work your way up. that's what it should be like, to me it would be a more realistic star trek experience instead of going straight into the thick of things but that's just my opinion

I would love to be able to always play with real people in a crew. It will be interesting to see how Cryptic handles the different positions aboard a starship if there are simply not enough players to fill the roles and how the roles will work out in general.

I think you'll have a small shuttle to start and work your way up, BUT you can crew a large capital ship (Enterprise-E) as a crewman or what not. Possibly even make a "Starship" yourself in the same way WoW has "Guilds" and CoH has "Bases". You use the signatures and credits of others and yourself to get something together that you all can use.

I share the sentiment. I liked the "bridge crew" approach of Perpetual. I'm a bit wary about the "You are the Captain" bit here, but it's too vague to know exactly how Cryptic's game will work.

If our characters aren't all top-of-the-class command school grads, I'm going the security route. :D

Well, from the little info we have it doesn't look like you can be a crewman. You'll captain a ship and band together with other ships to fight stuff and travel around. I would have liked to be a crewman personally, working on navigation or something.

I believe if they got enough man-power and had enough time, it could be the most epic MMO ever. I would love to see you being able to start out as a new recruit in a spaceship (though in the beginning it would probably be an NPC ship), and then at a certain lvl there would be a roster of currently active ships. Maybe it shows you the best one for you, and then you get to choose which one you want to serve on.
Maybe the upkeep of the ship would need to be monitored and if you let it lax, you suffered for it. Like you would have to have an engineer check up on the engines at some point within a week or your efficiency will wane. Maybe have it like a "Crafting" type deal, where the better you get at servicing something, the higher skill level you become and you can be deemed Chief engineer or such. Same with others like Medical officer, Helmsman, security officer etc.
We don't want to leave out the Klingon structure either. Maybe you can start outside of the federation and be on a working Klingon ship. We all know that the higherarchy is totally different and you would have to fight for the top.
Enough ranting for me. =P

This really could be an amazing MMO and deeply expansive. As long as they keep the Star Trek feel.

You know what? I'll say it one last time. Hopefully, since this this thread is dedicated to that subject, some of the people I've seen making this claim elsewhere will take notice:
Just because the About page says "You are the captain" doesn't mean you have to be the captain. I'm frankly astounded that anyone has even come to this conclusion. To bring back an example I keep using, this is them saying "lead your guild", and everyone else saying, "so, you're only letting us be guild leaders then?" It's like D&D saying "be a fighter or a wizard!" and everyone complaining that there'll only be two classes.
Relax, everyone! You're not going to be forced to be a captain. However, I'm sure that path will be open to anyone who wants it. I'm sure that even low level characters could get a runabout or even a small starship if they have the resources. But MMOs are team games by definition, and I've seen nothing to suggest that this is Admirality Online. Just because you have your own runabout doesn't mean you'll be confined to it forever. I suspect all ships other than runabouts will require additional crew, and players are always better than NPCs. With planning and good communication, you could effectively spend your entire career serving on the same ship under another captain.
Anyway, you will not be forced to be a captain. Chillax.

When I was a kid, my friends and I made up our own ficticious Star Ship called the USS Destiny and each of us had a position on the ship. My friend was Captian, I was second in command (and sometimes cheif of security), other friends would take on engineering and the helm.
This is how I would like to see STO. With crew members being acutal people (maybe NPC's can take over if your crew is not online or anything). I yearn for a game with a Command Structure.
Yeah, it would be cool to Captian your own ship, but I want to spend some time getting orders from my bold and intrepid Captain.
(Its hard to stay on topic with STO, I get so excited and my mind starts to think the possibilites with this game. I just had a cool idea for a mission, where intruders, maybe Borg, invade your Star Ship and you got to fight them off from the interior of your ship! I dont know how many times my frienda and I played that exact same senario. I cannot wait for this game!)
