Odd choice of original Star Trek font style and design for the logo, considering it seems to contradict the imagery of 24th century ships... any thoughts?

Well STO is in the 25th century i believe so things are going to look a bit different when you get in-game.

The retro Vibe will be *in* when the new movie hits. Its a good design decision.

I kinda miss the old one but I guess this new one will fit in.

I'm not convinced it'll last -- although due to the movie they might keep some design elements from the font. It's still early days, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it change every now and again.

I think a new developper can have his own logo. The classic design is nice.

its actually a mix of both TOS and TNG era's

the commbadge-shaped part is from TNG while the font is from TOS

The big Sovereign on the front page and the logo up on top of the forms makes me think they might be taking this back to the TNG era. And yes, it's probably due to be movie.

Indeed, with the upcoming film the font was a good decision. It doesn't completely fit, but then again I doubt that it will stay that long. I think that they need to make a new arrowhead that is recognisable different than the ones used nowadays. PE did a fairly good job with that, it only needed some minor changes to look super. I've put it on several of my ships, if people are wondering how it would look like...

I'm so glad they went with the 25th century. It keeps them from getting accused of violating canon.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Even my mom (who is responsible for me being a Trekker btw) likes the retro look better than the other logo.

I think this new logo looks tacky and to old school. I think the original logo that perpetual designed was a lot sleeker and sexier to be honest.

I'm pretty sure it's because of the new movie. I hadn't noticed. I guess I'm blind. I don't mind it though.

Actually, it is 100% easier to violate canon in the future, because so much of the past has set the presedence for the time frame they are trying to create.

Heck, for a game supposedly set 20 years after Nemesis, they can't even get the uniforms right. 20 years after Nemesis comes the "future" uniform worn in the "future" scenes on VOY: End Game and TNG: All Good Things. So if they can't get a simple detail like that right, how are they gonna manage the big stuff?

They went to the 25th Century to try and ignore canon and write their own stuff. Probably not the wisest move they ever made. Almost certain it will backfire on them.

To be fair the future suits shown in the show were ugly. Plus that was merely a possible future since often those events like in Voyager were changed.
As long as there's not a lot of armor on 'em and they keep them simple and within the style of Star Trek I'm okay.

Understandable, and in theory, I agree with you.

What I am getting at is the following of design lineage.

If Cryptic thinks creating a new uniform is a good idea, then so be it. But make it look like the next in line uniform format.

The last official "canon" uniform was the grey shoulders FC/Nemesis Uniform. Then all of a sudden, Perpetual goes a bit wild on the wacky tobaccy one night and decides that Starfleet officers now wear scuba suit action super hero costumes, complete with utility belt. I ask myself, where in the wold did this come from? And up to the day PE closed, they hung on to that idea.

Now, Cryptic has the same uniform in a background on their front page. I hope it's just there because they bought it from PE, but really they plan for something better.

That's what I'm trying to get across. I don't think Cryptic has the knowledge level of Trek canon, much less the resources or dedication to accurately continue the Trek beyond Nemesis.

Guess time will tell.

Actually a lot of the people at Cryptic including the boss man seem to be trekkies. Even so video game Devs seem to go too far quite often (see Stargate Worlds).

I guess I'm somewhat okay with those designs because I've seen how TRULY HORRIBLE Devs can do. Looking at Stargate where basically they wear little more then what regular army people wear (with a Zat gun here and there) then looking at Stargate Worlds which takes place at the same time in the show... yet they're wearing BATTLE SUITS LIKE HALO... the horror.... :(

But I do agree. I want to see something in the spirit of the show. I wouldn't mind them adding a belt or a few somewhat crazy details as long as it's ONLY a few and in moderation.

it's a hint, they're gonna relaunch the game in TOS time, hence the fed/klingon choice :p

then gradually add expansions that bring the game forwrd to TNG timeframe ;)

You brought up a good point though Parallax, those suits were quite ugly!

Seriously, how did they go from the awesome hotness that was the First Contact uniform to the sheer ugliness of the 2404 uniform, with no step in between?

 :D

I would TOTALLY buy into that game! Or something along the lines of Rick Sternbach's idea from the other night about having a "temporal nexus" type event that would allow everyone to experience all the eras of Trek. I would love that game.

well as they haven't announce when the game will take place just that the feds and klinks are in it, it could totally be starting off TOS and moving forward, like a relaunch of the franchise with the move, maybe a relaunch of games with STO. we may yet get our first reall good quality ST game, but i'll reserve judgement till i see what they do.

It's a given that this game will take place in a post-TNG era. While I believe that the original STO logo fits better, this new one encapsulates the whole Star Trek franchise, which is good :)

I actually like the logo. (and I think I am able to give a good opinion because I am studying graphic design) I will admit that I was kinda shocked to see it at first, but if you think about it.. it kinda does reflect a more retro style which could be a popular fad in this time period.. you know how styles are recycled and what not...
