I believe STO is PC only like most MMO's.

I ask this:
How do you console players expect to chat? Voice won't cut it when 500 people are in the same area (starbase) voice chatting at the same time so it MUST be keyboard chat (with voice for parties) or no chat at all.

That's probably the point of the cross-platform release. It was done with FFXI as well, though that game fails in my opinion because too much value was placed on graphics, and because of the xp loss on death (there's actually a level-down animation!!! The horrors!!!). I sense another wave of USB-keyboard purchases coming...

why would it have to be Keyboard chat there is a thing as hailing and u could use your headset

What if you want to say... Get an away team together by asking in general chat on a starbase?
Or perhaps buy something?
Or ask a question?

Hailing one person is fine, but that means you'll go through a list of people until someone answers your question/request?

I would hope yes!

general hail = anyone can hear
Secure commuication + one person can hear
Conference communication = guild or group chat

hasnt anyone read the "about star trek online" from the main page??

here is a quote from it:
Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek® Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!

i think that answers your question :)

Consoles do allow the use of keybaords as well, even mouse. I would say that tthere will be voice chat for 1 on 1 or groups and fleet chats.

but what conserns me is that the PC version is going to be dumbed down and the controls are going to be very simple. I could be wrong but i hope not. On a plus side, please cryptic please.... if the controls are going to be based around the use of a game pad, add support for all gamepads, not just xbox or ps pads. Star Trek Legacy anyone? Or at least make the commands customisable.

Keyboards will probably become necessary for the console version of Star Trek Online. The 360 already has a keyboard that attaches to the controller, and I have a funny feeling that the game will be on the 360. I'm sure because the headset on the 360 is so successful it will be available for use in-game as well.

This is a very important point, it's key to make Star Trek Online mainstream and a commerical success, I think it is the right way to go for the long term sustainability of STO.

I've alway wondered how you can connect different platforms in one game. I think the ultimate goal is not to notice if another player plays on a different platform.

I have to admit knowing that it'll be directed at console as well as pc has me a little worried as a mainly pc gamer. Mmorpgs should never be "dumbed" down in favor of making it a console game too. At least in my opinion. I'd rather have a robust PC game... but we can't really make heads or tails out of that just yet. Hopefully when we start seeing some in game play videos we might have a better grasp on how this will pan out for both PC and Console users.

MMORPG's have not really been dumbed down, they just let to you learn as you progress through the game, complexity is still the same in LOTR as it is in SWG, as it was in Everquest.

Consoles are capable or online gaming, and evidently too, of persistent worlds, I would say that developing on a console in far easier than on a PC given the support that is given the console developers over PC gamers.

But lets be absolutely clear, it has not been written ANYWHERE that Star Trek Online for PS3 or XBOX360 will share the persistent world of Star Trek Online for PC. The console and the PC game could have entirely different server and perhaps even game play suited for each others needs.

We need to be careful at how we perceive this, we do not have the necessary information to claim "dumbing down" because we actually don't know if the Console and the PC's version will be the same, and if players from both platforms can interact with each other.

Agreed, Jaz.

And I'm not crying worf... er... wolf yet. But rather just reiterating something I've seen as a concern before. Smart, for a lack of a spiffier word, games are better than the Button Mashing games associated with many console games for a lot of mmorpg players.

Mashing button A or equivalent Toolbar slot 1 for a basic Phaser attack just isn't quite as cool as having a slew of skills and strategy as your arsenal instead. ;)

Let's just hope the console part of it that has me worried doesn't pan out that way.

I hope it so.... A console mmo run to be another AoC...
the Gameplay should be simplified and graphics is set too high for most PCs in use...

 I seriously hope they don't "dumb down" the game for the benefit of consoles. It kinda put a damper on my excitement when I read the announcements and all. *sniff*

I don't see any point to worrying: you know they're only gonna release it for the HD capable consoles (i.e. XBox360, PS3) just from the trailers and screenshots, which look awesome.
And as far as the PC-to-console interactions, I 2 box it all the time with FFXI (360 and PC at the same time), keyboards are very helpful for both, and so are gamepads, it's just a matter of how you like to play and there's very little difference between the two systems. Granted this is an ancient MMORPG, it's still a great example. Because there's almost no one that trys to play it on the PS2: too slow, reduced graphics, frequent disconnects, etc. making you unreliable in any battle, so they can never level and ultimately quit trying.
I'm sure the game will rock, and if there's any down-grading it will only be console-specific and won't effect the PC version.

Have they even made a cross-platform playable MMO game for PS3 and PC ?

I'd be willing to bet Bill Gates money this will be PC and XBox, and we will indeed be able to play together.

Assuming the game will be playable on consoles, I definitely think that the universe should be cross-platform.

They have said they can do cross platform servers but they haven't said if they will do it or not.

In an FAQ published on the game's official site, the question "Will console and PC players be on the same servers?" is posed. The response goes as follows - "We would like that to be the case. There is nothing technologically keeping us from making it so."..........

Don't quote me on it, but Sony's DC Universe Online is supposed to be PS3 and PC together if I remember correctly. Given Champions is 360 though and (I'm under the impression) 360s and PCs are more similar, I'd say the 360 is more likely.

Actually this is a recent news item... this is why I'm skeptical about PS3. XBox however is already doing it with other MMOs like CO and Huxley.... There are MP games like Gears of War as well
......

From G4TV

Sony's DC Universe Online might not have that feature. Patch updates may hinder the cross-compatibily play between consoles.

In an interview with MTV, creative director Chris Cao explains what may prevent PS3 players from taking on the universe of DC with PC heroes/villains."When we add stuff to the PC side it’s a different route; going through the PlayStation Network and getting it to our console person is a lot different than getting it to our PC person," said Cao.
