I doubt it. They seemed just as thrilled when they announced CO as now. It's just the "new child in the family" effect...
Not to mention the fact that Jack Emmert is a long-time avid Champions player, and CO is the spiritual successor of their first MMO.

The graphics do indeed look cartoony, however, we have no information to back those claims and quite frankly, even Perpetual had said they wanted it to look more "stylised" - Lets not get ahead of ourselves, performance wise this game should be a dream.

Of course they're more excited about STO. Star Trek is in the hearts and minds of all computer geeks (MMO Designers as well), even moreso than comic books. Plus after CoX I'm sure Cryptic is very enthusastic about a change of pace.

Well, the space scenes don't appear "cartoony" in any sense of the word. I expect that the ground game will have the same feel and asthetic as we see it space.

If this game has stick figure graphics, I'm still going to love it.
From a "commercial" market, Star Trek, Star Wars, and KISS (not in that order) have the most loyal buyers to a product regardless of quality (KISS fans demand the least quality, but now a days I suppose its hard to get a ton of new "high quality" stuff). I have loved playing World of Warcraft for 4 years now, but I knew as soon as I even heard this was coming out that unless it was so bad that... actually no, no level of bad would stop me from playing this. That's not a sign to the producers of "don't try", but me personally would play this if it were an old fashioned MUD text based game.
I'd take "slightly cartoony graphics and the game exists" over "real to life CGI graphics and it doesn't come out till 2014".

I think the graphics will be updated a bit over the next year so i don't worry about them.

I don't think so either. They now have 2 potentially very profitable IPs. Even more so if they keep their promises & release them on consoles.

They are for sure excited more about STO the Co right now, but that's just because they anounced STO just now.
If done right STO could be a great success. It would also help if the new ST movie succeeds.
I know i am more excited about startrek then super heroes game. I bet the dev team for startrek might be too, but you know, whats wrong with that? lol Im sure the CO team still wuves u ;)

Champions Online is nowhere near as popular as Star Trek, and I think that would be reflected in the Cryptic staff. Champions Online looks like a great game, but Star Trek Online will be epic.

Never understood why Cryptic was creating CO in the first place after already doing a great job on City of Heroes. From what I saw it's basically the same thing, just different game mechanics.

Cryptic is a business. They are thrilled with whatever franchise will make them money.

Indeed, Gods and Heroes was nearly done and they just dropped it.

Cyjack is notably a Cryptic fan and very much looking forward to CO.
and I understand where he is coming from, but this thread goes back awhile - what are we thinking now?
I seen CO and it's gonna be pretty cool. I might enjoy the people playing CO more than STO. STO seems to have attracted an interesting crowd. Take that however you want, it's always been a lucrative franchise. I've been playing Star Trek games for a very long time.
But the CO crowd might just be a tighter knit and more friendly group of comic book and RPG fans that will be very supportive of whichever direction Cryptic takes it.
I wonder if you're still more excited for STO Cyjack, or if all this bickering has put you more into a wait and see approach.
Is Cryptic more excited about STO. I don't think so.
Excited about potential revenues? Yes
Excited about proving the worth of their MMO engine by bringing STO up from the ashes? Certainly !!!
But at least with CO they have something that they can call their own.

Well personaly I'm deffently more excited about STO than CO, I'd never heard of the Champions universe untill they announced CO. Then again Star Trek has a much larger fanbase in my opion and a lot of dedicated fans (I almost want to say these forums are more active than COs but seriously don't quote me on that). For instance take me... I've been following this game for the last 4-5ish years of my life :p

Well, I don't like to encourage thread necromancy, but as you asked me directly...
Im still very excited for CO, but I think they've been bit of a media/hype vacuum. Whenever this happens, it usually means theyre making moves behind the scenes and preparing to set something up. I would expect some big announcements on that end soon which should start up the hype machine again. The poor people on those boards have been languishing for the better part of a year, and haven't benefited from recently launched boards, a couple much ballyhooed countdown timers and recent notable gameplay trailers like the people on this site have all had over the past month.
But as big a supers fan as I am, there's something especially appealing to me about STO. No matter how cool Champions turns out, with however much customization potential for making the character *you* want to play rather than some cookie cutter class that has been written *for* you...
...I still don't get a Star Trek starship.
In fact, knowing the philosophy and potential of the design going in to Champions Online, it makes me even more exited to know that these elements will be filtering in to STO as well. All those open ended customization elements , and powers, being applied to characters, ships and crews in STO...being applied to my *Bird of Prey*...it sounds like a micromanger/customizer's dream. Being an old Mechwarrior lover, Im an instant fan of any game that really lets me build my own "rig". Train my crew how I want, name them what I want, trick out my ship in the Star Trek...In addition to the entire Champions-esque experience of of creating entirely my own character with the abilities I want...this alone has me sold on the game.
Its sort of like everything I want from CO...and then even more stuff on top. I know some of the posters here have been through the ringer over the past few years with the various incarnations of the previous proposed game that never really existed, and can get kind of hung up thinking about the game in terms of how they imagine it could be, or could have been. But I tend to compare the game to other games I've actually played, and from that viewpoint STO looks to be the game Cryptic is really putting some interesting new stuff in the mix for.
The whole minion thing is a really big deal. The minion system was the coolest thing about Gods and Heroes before it evaporated, and the Minion class in COV is one of the funnest gameplay experiences in the game. Seeing it expanded an developed much further, and giving every character in the game minions is actually a pretty big deal in and of itself in the MMO realm. Other games would build an MMO around that aspect alone and hang their hat on it.
From the "cryptic" way Crpytic has been speaking about the Exploration and Research aspect of the game, this also sounds like its going to be something fairly interesting and fresh.
The fact that it's going to be the only other major dedicated space gameplay MMO besides EVE, but with Cryptic's signature focus on fun, customization, and playability is going to be a big deal for this game, Star Trek or no. I think the decisions Cryptic has made are not going to result in a game that will fulfill everyone's idea of what the *perfect* Star trek game *could* be. But I think they will result in a good game, a good *Star Trek* game, and one of the few approaches to an impossibly broad IP that could really work AND be fun. I also think it has the potential to do what none of the Star Trek projects in the last decade or so has managed to do...actually *grow* the fanbase.
The quality (or lack thereof) of these boards hasn't put me off the game...its just put me off the boards. But that's an inevitability with any pre release MMO message boards. Eventually , I always reach a point where I cant take all the repetition, un-informed knee jerk speculation and ill considered wall of text rant-a- thons...and just plain bad manners. It just happened sooner here because, I think, of how fractured the whole Perpetual thing left the collective psyche of people who were following that game...theyre like a dog that's been beaten, caged and poked with sticks for too long. I never bought what Perpetual was selling, so I was spared that trauma.
So as I finish my little novella here, it occurs to me that by comparison to some other posters on the boards here, this puts me squarely in the "fanboy" camp. So be it. But it wasn't something I was anticipating. I had written off STO, as I had no confidence in the previous version(s). I was even indifferent when everyone in the world *knew* Cryptic had picked up the license, so it isn't primarily a Cryptic fan thing. But with their announcement of what the game's focus will be, and some of the features they have planed...and contrasted with other actual MMOs I have played, this game sounds like it's going to fire for me on several different levels.
It just sounds fun.
Sorry, but you asked.

I agree...
and I don't know what you're appoligizing for... because you gave it deep consideration?
This could be the best game that ever came from what never was. I like the exploration aspects... as much as I participate with the loudmouths here... I will probably set straight out for unexplored territory and hope Cryptic gives me cool stuff to discover and doesn't plague me with unfriendlies. This makes my participation and opinions regarding teams and ships rather moot. I wonder how many people will be in this MMO on a deep space basis such as me... To boldly go :D
