So far, Human and Klingon races are confirmed as playable.
Which one would you play and what other races would you like to see in the game?.

I would play as Human, maybe Vulcan if they become playable. Does anyone know the timeframe of when the game is taking place? Is it on the Site somewhere?

Seen somewhere 25th Century.

Edit: Immerse yourself in the future of the Trek universe as it moves into the 25th century: a time of shifting alliances and new discoveries.

It's a split between Human and Romulan (assuming the Romulans are a playable race).

I would play as Human or perhaps the Borg.:)

Personaly I would like to see them do away a bit with races. In character creations Id like to see you being able to choose skin colors ranging from white human flesh tones to deep blue and so on. For facial construction being able to apply pre-rendered "bits" so to speak like "klingon forehead 1-9" or "Andorian Antena 1-9" ect. They could have options like "cybornetics 1-20" which apply cyborg like parts so you could play out your "once borg" character, ear "bits" to have vulcans, bajoran ext type ears.

Once you have applied your "make-up" so to speak the next step in the process could be "buying attribute" like INT, Cha, Dex,Wis, Str ect or buying a pre-made stat pack like Klingon, Vulcan human ect.

That being said id like to play a Bajoran/Human as my main and an Andorian as an Alt.

Human. Part of my draw to the Star Trek universe is how we as humans came out of such a barbaric like state (er.. the kind we are in now in reality) and while still struggling with irrational emotions still manage to build something like the federation and the UFP.

Pretty sure that would butcher Star Trek lore. Races are very important and fleshed out in the Star Trek universe to just throw the Spore creator at them.

Anyway, I'd be a Vulcan if I could. The snobbiest Vulcan possible, of course. :D

I would love to have the ability to play a Ferengi as I believe they have great potential to be a thriving economic force in the galaxy as they are in the show. Theres so much I want to experience, I would also like to play on the side of the Klingon Empire and have glorious battles! I would also like to be maybe human, or Trill or some other race moving up the ranks through the Federation.

There are hundreds of races in Star Trek but my top 3 would be:

1. Vulcan - I am able to move my eyebrow in the manner that Spock does and even have a photo from my trip to Disney world back in high school with my face pasted over spocks. Good times. I love the Vulcan culture and alot of my favorite star trek novels were those revolving around Vulcan.

2. Human - Who doesn't want to be Kirk or Picard? Humans are extremely generic though and with the constant corruption that the human race portrays in most games, I will try to avoid making a human too soon.

3. Romulan - An evil vulcan like race? Hell yes. Romulans are simply too evil and sly which really portrays how I would like my game avatar to behave.

I am not really a melee combat guy and so Klingons just wont do it for me. I'm always the mage or the thinker in the games I play and I doubt Star Trek will be any different for me.

To get to grips with the game to start off with, I'd perhaps like to be a Freelancer, not a terrorist or a scavenger...just perhaps a freighter captain, just so that I can mill around the game and learn before I apply to Starfleet where the real exploration and combat will begin!

07-28-2008, 12:27 AM
At this point in time? I'd say it depends what each race offers, as is the norm in MMOs. Between the two we've been given, I'd say if the Klingon is a superior "tank" or "brawler" type of race, I'd gladly try that just to break away from all the human players... Similarly, I'd probably rather play a Romulan than a straight up Vulcan if they intend to take that route. It's not because I like to play the "evil" races if you will, it's just generally more fun from a roleplay perspective to break away from the human race. Yes yes, Horde for the win. >_>

Beyond that, my mind is rather blank at the moment on the myriad of likely Star Trek races beyond the extremely unlikely Q and Borg. But if I could, say, play a humanoid android similar to Data and the like, oh yeah, I'd love that.

LordDave
07-28-2008, 12:28 AM

I understand your theory here about lore but what is a Vulcan within the confins of a MMO? An elf unless the player takes it upon themselves to be a Vulcan, ie roleplay a Vulcan. Thats why I would rather build an original character and "buy" stats as opposed to getting pre-determined racial attributes, after all Worf for example wasnt a "typical" Klingon.

I kinda like the idea of a "make your own species" idea to some extent. The federation is home to thousands of species and they can really look like anything.
However the animations alone would be murder so it's probably best to stick with a set types of species.

Well what I was talking about, and its perhaps my fault for not stating it clearer, is pre-rendered features much like hair styles are in other MMO's but these would be bits like antena, ear types, eye types ect. That would be huminoid. Of course for non-human (Gorn for example) of course a diffrent species "bundle" would be needed.

Hopefully this will be included with the ingame vids in two weeks!

If they really go in-depth with the races and allow half-breeds. That would be so epic. In the show they have already shown that Half-Human/Klingons can happen. As well as many others.

I would love to play an Andorian, Vulcan or Klingon.

Personally, I liked the Gorn. When I played Star Trek RPG (the one made by the ones who created Battletech), a friend of mine played a Gorn security officer for our ship.

One of the things I liked about Star Trek that I hope they'll allow in this game is that Star Fleet's not limited to who can join. You didn't have to be from a planet that's a member of the Federation to do so.

I hope that there are many playable species in this game and, of course, the facility to create "alts".

I wonder what (if any) variables there come with choosing a race (i.e do certain species have specific traits or +/- modifiers to stats from the start) Even so I would be looking to have my main character as a human I think for me.

Hope this isnt too off topic but I would like to see from the games initial release, the ability to play as:

Humans,
Klingons, (in the empire, or in starfleet may be interesting)
Vulcans,
Andorians,
Tellarites,
Bajorans,
Trill,
Bolians.

Hmm have I missed any lol!
Having said that, there is no reason why in the ST future other races such as cardassians, ferengi cant be playable in this game either as federation officers or their own factions through expansion packs
Ok Im getting carried away so Im gonna stop - heres hoping eh :)

yeah you cant exactly have ALL the races in STO from the start and even if you could i dont think it would be a good idea at all because if you put everything in at the start what are you going to do to keep people playing? what new things would you give them?

yep, exactly - I only meant what I would like to see as playable federation races at launch. I went through, from memory, what I thought the main distinct Federation races are and used those.

I really hope you can choose out of a lot of races, so the diversity would be immense.
But the races whould ba mainly cosmetic, mayby have 1 skill or something that's unique for the race.
Only this will be a bit unfair towards the Klingon Empire, because they can't choose from a diversity of races,
or maybe you can be a mercenary race and allig yourself with the Klingon Empire. Mmmmm, that's not even a bad idea I guess :)

I'm going a bit offtopic here but it would be cool if you can not only be a Klingon when playing with the Klingon Empire but also with some race the Klingons could have allied with. I could see Naussicans, the Gorn and the Chalnoth (look them up) as potential Klingon Allies.

But anyway I would love to play as a Ferengi or an Andorian

Only this will be a bit unfair towards the Klingon Empire, because they can't choose from a diversity of races,

well originally the klingons conquered other planets and enslaved the populous and some rose up to be "loyalist" tot he klingon empire and were allowed to be on ships as crew and other high positions, but that idea got corrupted along the way to what we see now for klingons as a single set of idiot warriors who just want to fight and die.

Kinda disappointing but it seems that only Federation races will be playable, and only a few at that. Looks like Romulans and such will be relagated to being mobs and such =/

Maaaaan, as a long time Star Fleet Battles player I can only wish for some of the races of the variant Star Fleet Universe setting that SFB, Federation Commander and the Star Trek RPG draw from, cause I'd kick a kitten to be able to fly one of the Interstellar Concordium cruisers.

However, I'd wager that they're sticking to just the official canon storyline, so I'd start out with the Federation and move on from there when I'm tired of playing everybody's favorite pacifistic hippie *******s. ;)

... man I was waiting years for somebody to do this game, and I'm immensely pleased it's in the capable hands of Cryptic Studios.

Assuming that we'll indeed be able to play multiple races, I'll probably role something other than a Vulcan or a Klingon. Nothing wrong with them of course, but I can imagine the game will be over saturated with those two... at least initially.

So probably a human at first.

Half Human Half Bajoran/Vulcan? Thats why I dont think Cryptic should actually create hard ruled races but rather archetypes which are infinantly costumizable like heroes were in City of Heroes. Give us a few Classes, Prof's or Archetypes to chose from and keep the cutomization possabilities like you did in CoH and we could make Klingon/Cardassians or Tellurite/Ferengi half-breeds.

MetalHead
07-28-2008, 08:46 AM
Too many racial options is actually a VERY bad thing for this game, IMHO. I presume you are going to be on the Starfleet/Klingon side of the universe, meaning no Romulans, Borg, or other enemy races.

But that said, on that side of the ledger, how many ships have we seen captained by someone who WASN'T a Human or a Klingon? The answer is very few - and I think to stay true to the source material and setting you need to preserve that. Having scores of Andorians running around captaining ships might be interesting, but its simply not reflective of the source material.

I found something problematic about this when I played LOTRO. In that setting, most humans had never even SEEN elves or hobbits, yet in the MMO the streets were literally teeming with both races in human cities. Those types of things really can ruin immersion, espeically when its such a well-established brand like LOTR, or in this case Star Trek.

People want to see a setting the feels familiar. I'd keep the playable races, at launch, to just Humans and Klingons.

Terrez

In MMOs I enjoy playing characters that are the least like myself, whether it's an alien/fantasy race or changing up the gender/ethnicity. So I'd go for the least human-looking race available. If that's Klingon, then that's what I'll go with. But there are other visually interesting races in the Star Trek universe that would be fun to play, like the Tellarites.

I don't know, however i dont want to be restricted by federation so i could go with Klingon. Though i would love to see Andorian introduced at some point, as we only know about the two and most recognized species it allows Cryptic to introduce more races as the game goes on and we don't know how long it will take to get to different systems and this starting off with two i think is fine at the moment.

We are the borg. We will assimilate you. Lower your shield and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile!

Did I miss anything? :D Don't answer that lol. But yeah I think you'd be right on this one. We'd have like tons of borgs running around assimilating others lol. The problem with playing as a borg though, is that you have no individuality so how could you possibly play as one? :)

but an Andorian or Klingon alt would be nice.

Not too crzy about the thought of having a playable Borg since they are not supposed to have minds of their own, the slow walking would drive me crazy too. After what Janeway did to them though who knows the hive may have broken into mini hives and they may be more playable, but still a solo-able Borg doesn't make much sense. I guess former Borg aka 7 of 9 would be ok.

I think the Borg will seriously unbalance the game.

I could see Borg being a developer only thing, like the Jovians in EVE, or recon armor in Halo. On special occasions, or even just whenever they feel like it, they could fire up their Borg cube ships and terrorize the alpha quadrant for a while.

As for myself, I'd prefer to play Romulan. I've played them in just about all Star Trek games where species is a factor.

If they refuse to add them, and I hear that the game is good, then Klingon I guess, just because 80% of the player base will be Federation.

Odo is a founder / changeling. A founder would be too powerful though. Odo didn't know how powerful he was, but he was the expection not the rule.

I'd probably like to play as a Trill or Andorian. Romulan would be cool too, but I doubt they'd be a playable race since you can only be Federation or Klingon Empire. I also think it'd be cool if you could make your character a former Borg drone, that could be interesting.

SketchTrek
07-29-2008, 01:19 AM
Yeah that would be great. They may be able to implement that into the character creation. Maybe as accessories to add to your character when you are making them. Give you a few design options for each part depending on the area you wish to apply them to. This will allow players to still play one of the normal races, but still allow them to have the feeling and look of being a Borg individual.

Klingon is tempting. I wouldn't mind roughing up those dirty Borg in hand to hand combat. I really hope there is a character creation similar to Star Wars Galaxies. I identify best with Vulcans philisophically, Romulans culturally, Cardassians climatically, and Vorta physically.

However, I can easily imagine playing either such species in a manner that I can identify with, so, this may seem strange, but I am most likely to play whichever species allows me to appear youngest.

It is a long story, but believe me: it is the one trait I will not compromise, regardless of behaviour.

Gnurl
07-29-2008, 10:41 AM

I wouldn't want them to do away with races per-se, but I would definitely want to minimize each race's advantages and disadvantages, and definitely not start down the Vulcans Can Only Be Science Guy, Tactical Guy, or Security Guy type road.

Quite frankly, why you can't be any one of a dozen races eludes me. They may be trying to put too much work into each race, feeling they have to flesh out an entire planet and full set of missions from level 1 to 802 for each class of that race.

Don't. Just build your classes and treat the races as little more than a costume choice. Otherwise everyone starts at The Academy or The Klingon Academy, end of story.

Much better that way. Why I could "only" be a human or Klingon, I don't know. Pick Andorian, go to Klingon academy or Starfleet. Pick Bajoran, go to either.

Maybe later open up a 3rd training, Cardassian, or Romulan, or Founders/Whatever That Badass Warrior Race Of Theirs Was, etc.

You'll lose a lot of coolness if you design it as: 2 factions, therefore only 2 playable races. Don't! :)

If we can have more than one character (*crosses fingers*) I will also play as a Vulcan. It depends on what races are available to us. I would most likely have a human alt as well. I look forward to the many role-play opportunities that come with the various alien races. But first and foremost, my main character will be Klingon.

Actually, full-blooded Betazoids are full telepaths, they can read thoughts (of most races anyway). Deanna Troi was empathic (not telepathic) because she was half-Betazoid, half-Human.

EDIT:

I just figured out how you could incorporate Betazoids into a Star Trek MMO.

You make it a racial skill that Betazoids use, the way a cleric would use a Healing skill, or a tank would use a taunt skill (or using examples of racial skills from Lord of the Rings Online, the way an elf would enter stealth using Sylvan Shadows, or a Hobbit would feign death using Hobbit-silence)...

Make the skill called something like "Sense Target" or "Read Target" that basically performs a "scan" of the NPC / Mob. The resulting output would go to the Betazoid players chat box and say something like:

<Target> is lying.
<Target> is afraid but feigning aggression.
<Target> is thinking of the Blue statue.

Then the Betazoid player would communicate the results of their "scan" the way Troi would tell Picard what she just sensed.

I haven't really decided to be perfectly honest. I've always been kind of a role player so either Vulcans or Klingons could be fun. Even the Andorians would be a good role playing race. I see myself trying out several before I decide on which one is right for me as I do in most MMOs I try. My first character seldom becomes my main as I have to get a feel for what works best for me.

I really like this idea, though I think it is too in depth for what Cryptic is trying to make here - a more casual oriented game.

As of right now, with our seeming 2 races to choose from, I have to say Klingon. Honor, battle and blood wine!!!
My race of choice, however, would be Cardassian! Obsidian Oder = win.

If possible I'd like to start off as an Andorian. If that's not available I'll be a "Vulcan", but I'll say RP that I'm half Romulan or something.

My picture says it all. Been a fan of Andorians since TOS.

However I'm also pro-Romulan and I wouldn't mind having a hybrid (or full blood) of one if that's an option for Starfleet later on. If there's Klingons and Ferengi (Cardassians?) in Starfleet in this day and age, then I don't see why a few Romulans couldn't be added. Depends on the storyline in the game I reckon.

I was going to play Cardassian if they were available. Now I don't know. Probably a custom race.

Anything Robotic. At the least, something like Data, but I want to be more obviously robotic(Really, think more a Star Wars Droid, or a classic Sci-Fi robot, or something. Or, the Iron Giant, but less huge.). Really, that's always been my favorite race in anything.

I would like to play the aliens from Cheron. They were seen in www.startrek.com/startrek/view/series/TOS/episode/68800.html- Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. They would have a nice stun effect on most races I would think. I also like the black and white faces. I would also like to play El-Aurians. A humanoid species of "listeners" whose individual life-span can last well over 500 human years. El-Aurians appear to have an awareness that supersedes the normal flow of time and space, and while they might not be capable of explaining their sensing abilities, they detect time changes that would be impossible for nearly all other species to pick up. This trait has been recognized within individuals who were subjected to the nexus energy ribbon phenomenon, which may be related to the sense. They could come in handy in a time travel mission. It would be nice if they made some of these races "standard" so you do not have many of the same race running around with diffrent stats.

Which one would you play and what other races would you like to see in the game?.

I''m going to be Ferengi.

I wonder if you play a Trill if there will be missions dealing with your past lives. For example you could run into enemies or friends of one of your former hosts. Also(and this probably isn't likely), but I wonder if you could allow your character to die at some point and then come back as your next host (would you still have command of your same ship or would you start over at the beginning as if you are a new character).

Now, considering the age of the forum...

I have to call necro.

Philia can be disputed, so long as when you kissed the Trill, you didn't like it.

(Side note to that, gee wow, how surprising, another human.)

Does anyone bother to read the site info before they write...A: the game takes place 30 years from Star Trek Nemesis movie...B: All federation races are playable and the 2 starting faction are Federation and Klingon. Please read the game FAQ and other site info before you post. It makes you look ignorant.
