What are your thoughts on this latest chapter in the life of Star trek online? Happy? Sad? Did you want Blizzard to do it?

I would be forced to brutally murder whoever sold the rights to Blizzard if that were the case, and the entire Blizz dev team when they were announced. :D

Did you want Blizzard to do it?I'm a die-hard Blizzard fan but if they're going to get into sci-fi MMOs, they need to do StarCraft.
First impressions are that my laptop isn't going to be able to run the game at all. Hope I can get a new computer by release. Oh, and I hope the game is available on Mac, too, because that's what I'm switching to.

I agree. I'm worried that the console version will require the game to be "dumbed down". Yes it'll reach a much larger audience, but it's difficult to have an inventory with consoles or to do complex macros or chat with text or emotes, ect...
Good for fighting, but I don't think it'll work for the player interaction. Heck, how can you even have a general chat channel without mics on a console?

Sounds like it. Hopefully gameplay isn't too arcadey with it being on consoles.
I like the style they want to use. Sort of a mix between comic vs. realism. The colors on the screens look really vibrant. I'm getting very excited again....finally :)

I was also expecting news about CO, but this totally caught me by suprise. I thought for sure that STO was dead in the water with the snafu over at Perpetual, but it looks like I was wrong, thankfully.

Almost definitely. It isn't entirely realistic (LOOOTS of ships) but it's more fun than trying to work out a way for people to play as a ship crew that isn't amazingly lame or dependent on people cooperating. I can imagine what would happen on most ships, and it's ugly. Mutiny with a side order of screaming expletives over voice chat and the loud questioning of other people's sexual proclivities.

NOOO! They've ruined enough lives and so has Sony. WoW has gone nowhere and that's where it's staying unfortunately. Sony just likes to sabotage other MMOs (Vanguard) so as to keep their own rambling corpse moving for a bit longer.
PS- Heh world of starcraft. mmmmm nah.

I was looking forward to that, dammit. D: Nah, but I did want to be a crewmember rather than a captain. You can't fly a starship by yourself...:(

My first impression is "ooooh, shiney!" Everything thusfar looks great. The promise of gameplay in space, ground and on ships is great, and although I don't intend to play one, the inclusion of the Klingon Empire is very exciting.
Still, I have no idea where they're actually going with this, in terms of era, overall plans, or anything. I'm impatient to find out more, but I'm also a bit dubious until I know exactly what Cryptic are throwing our way. I guess that's the Perpetual Effect.

Yeah, I'm not to crazy about the console parts either. I hope it doesn't turn it into a segmented parties with pc people able to do this and console people only able to do that.
I HOPE we each don't get our own ship. I don't want an EVE Online clone. I want to experience Star Trek like I'm really living it.

As far as the whole ship thing is concerned, I think they're going with what was originally setup where everyone would start with their own personal ship (shuttle) and as you gain experience, you can get better ships, but you can dock with a larger starship/starbase and crew that if you want. Not captain, but work tactical or what not.

yeah to tell you the truth im worried cause how are we gonna be able to fly these HUUUUUUUUUUUGE capital class starships without a crew?!?!? ,well i mean think about it, if the crew has to be run by players then their wont be any crews because if everyone has their own ship then no ones gonna want to be a crew member on yours, unless theirs computer player crews? gah im so confused right now, this is gonna be a loooooooong couple of weeks until the gameplay footage comes out and then we will get to see whats up:(

I am hoping it will be a setup where once you get larger ships, one player can fly them with limited capabilities, but as more players come aboard they open up more options.

I'm reserving judgment on the console part. Hoping it won't affect it too much. Hoping they will set some requirements of console owners such as require them to have a keyboard for chat...I can't stand voice communication for general chat. Squad chat is ok for voice...but not general.

Are you mad? Security Officer for the phasers! Being captain is boring. All you'd do is give orders and sit there watching people do their job, and maybe the occasional exploration trip.

I think there was said that some greater ship classes will only be available for clans or armadas (via a player with the fleetadmiral rank).
About that console stuff i can only say this:
PLEASE, cryptic studios, PLEASE do not the same mistake like SOE did with Star Wars - Galaxies, by cutting a game to console level!
That doesnt work! Also I dont believe that any console gamer will play an online game via gamepad.
Well, ok there are keyboard and mouse addons for consoles and stuff... but then you can also play that game via pc from start.
Again... PLEASE just concentrate on includeing and improveing the game features and dont waste time and money(!) to check the compatibility between pc and console version, or this game will just be something like a Star Trek Legacy MMO edition at last (you will see that you need to cut off more and more features because of incompability with the console version - like SOE did with SWG).
SOE tried it, and SOE fataly failed with Star Wars - Galaxies. Dont do that mistake again!
Please dont cripple the hope of us fans!
Our hope to play, no, to life Star Trek! To play a game that´s worth it!
About the new website:
err... guys I really thought after this "epic countdown stuff" you will show us something really interesting... something that looks like... err may be Star Trek?
The crappy screenshots just look like EvE Online. No federation spaceships, nor battle scenes or even some characters moveing around or do some stuff. Ok... nice graphic...
But nothing really new at all.
Oh ok... i forgot that new countdown :D
At last we need to wait another 13 days for the first "usable" stuff.
I think if they had set the website launch after August 10th, the page would have something to show really worth seeing.
Maybe they´ll add soemthing new the next days (hope so)

I don't think we'll all start off captaining our own ships.
What I HOPE they do is what perpetual first had planned, where you start off at the Academy and then work your way into a small shuttle, then a bigger vessel until you finally are apart (or captain) a bigger vessel as seen in the actual series.
If you think about it, it would make the most sense for them to make it like any of the other MMORPG's out there, where you can pick your discipline (The Matrix Online, WoW, etc) of what you want your character to do (i.e. Engineer, Pilot, etc)
That would boost at least my view of the overall game itself.
Now to wait for the 'in-game' footage. *le sigh*

I for one am very relieved to have Cryptic at the "helm"!
My only concern is to restore the starship interiors for personal ships. I hope that Cryptic will do so, if not at launch then very shortly thereafter. On the old STO.net forums (PE's unofficial forums run by fans), that was a VERY hot topic of which I was actively engaged in constructive feedback on why starship interiors for player(s) ships should make it into STO. Think "Bridge Commander-esque".
So I have faith Cryptic will make this a game what Star Trek fans have been waiting for YEARS in an MMO!

My first post on any game message board and I have played many, many games including SWG:
Epic, you have been handed one of the most exciting intellectual properties since Star Wars went to Sony and we all know what happened to that. I think if you listen to the hundreds of people already flooding your message boards you can already see consensus among most players regarding almost all aspects of the game. Normally it seems that people on these boards are torn between what each person wants, but all I am reading is showing an amazing level of unity. I firmly believe if you work hand and hand with those of us that will pay the bills that this game could give all MMO's a run for their money. Personally I like everything I see except maybe the cartoonish level of graphics, although I think it is too early to judge based on what I have seen. Just remember you are dealing with a unique breed of people and I don't know what your market research tells you, but I find it hard to believe this will appeal far beyond the sci-fi/star trek realm of fans. I realize it is probably an impossibility at this point to explore another graphics engine I just hope to see a bit more realism.
Good luck Epic, we all wish you the best.

Have you read the other posts yet? Jeez, these forums are one fire! Everyone has an opinion on what they'd like! Its great, I love it! :)
I wonder when we'll start seeing hissy-fit posts about people leaving because the game isn't being developed THEIR way. Most likely when more info becomes available, hopefully when we see that gameplay video.
The impression I get so far is that STO will be far more casual than the likes of EvE. Personally, I'm happy with that. My head hurst when I play EvE, I find it too.... deep. Plus all the space ships in it look like se* toys.
I'm happy its coming to consoles too, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this change as time moves on. Most MMOs announced for consoles either fail (Marvel UO, True Fantasy Live Online) or go to PC first & the console version never gets mentioned again (AOC, Warhammer, SW Galaxies).
You paint a disturbing picture, but very valid. I of course would love my own ship eventually but I would really want to start out on say a NPC ship with others to help build socialization, etc. All I really know is this is a hard genre to make into a MMORPG and I wish cryptic the best of luck. They've done well with CoX, hopefully the trend continues.

My first reaction is excited then an instant letdown that it will be yet another console/PC mashup that I hope will not depress me as much as Champions Online has. I like my MMOs to have depth and I just don't think that consoles can pull it off. I also just don't think console gamers are used to monthly charges and I just think it is a total waste of time.
The only exception to this is if they are making similar games but they will not share the same servers ever so that PC/Mac people can play and get more of the depth and the console people can have more of their twitch play. I just don't get it. Call me biased but I think that they are entirely different markets that can not both be appeased. I hope they change their mind about trying to make it both, it just disappoints me.
