Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch.

It's funny how Trek touches so many lives. Brings on so many memories, etc.

Jack and co. - I am ecstatic that you have taken on this daunting task, but I know that if any studio could pull it off, it is you guys. I just hope you know what you're in for from some of the more fringe elements of the Trek community. LOL

I, however, have faith. You kept me entertained for almost 4 years with CoX, everyone in my guild is looking forwad to CO, and now this - as I said in another thread, you guys RULE! :)

Okay, enough fanboi stuff. Let the good times roll!

Wow! Cryptic is off to a fantastic start. The new official site is very sweet. There is nothing here to upset the fanbase nor those who were following Star Trek Online when Perpetual had the license.

I am sure however when we get some more details about the game there will be plenty of bones to pick. I for one am urgently waiting for information about ship interiors and I want to see more of the visual look of the game. It appears Cryptic Studios is not going for a photorealistic approach, but the visual look is pretty good as it is.

I have had some good money saved up since the last attempt to buy a collectors edition of the game and pre-pay 6 months because of how much i've been looking forward to such a game. Two things excite me:
1. Jack Emmert, it is great to know that the lead for this game is someone with such a strong set of Trekkie credentials!
2. Cryptic Studios - you guys has great reputation yes?

One thing worries me:
1. It's being made for both PC and console.

I love console games. I love PC games. I hate console to PC ports. Please, please, please don't let this be a negative point for Star Trek Online, a game I plan to buy and play at all costs.

Thanks so much for picking this up and reviving my hopes for this game to be made. I can't concentrate on anything else today aaaaa.

It's about time! With Perpetual's total and complete failure behind us. I hope that Cryptic can ship both MMO's it is currently working on without one destroying the other. Ala Gods and Heroes.

The screen shots do look much much better than that World of Startrek look from P. I can only hope the characters look as serious and not Goof-trek. I will be following what they do with it. This will be the hardest project you guys will ever do. Good luck. The world is watching.

Absolutely great to see Cryptic's initial presentation easily outstripping much of what Perpetual had teased the community with in days gone by. I and the players of my Trek roleplaying simm from Obsidian Fleet are definitely looking forward to STO.

And folks, please don't bug these these hard-working people at Cryptic for release dates. It's miracle enough that another picked up this game when they did. Bottom line: It'll be done WHEN IT'S DONE!

Thanks.

Thank you for getting the LP for Star Trek Online, I've been waiting for it for quite a while (was it first announced during CoH Beta or after it launched? It's been a while).... :)

I'm very grateful it's in good hands, I know that Cryptic didn't want to tip the hat too soon, but the 'they have the LP, they might have the LP, they don't have the LP' was starting to kill me.

It was an illogical reaction (we need some Star Trek emotes, STAT!), for which I must appologize.

The only thing that was worries me (already! LOL) is that there will be a console release?
How is that going to work? Please don't "dumb" down the controls to make them fit a console.

But otherwise I like the initial screenshots, they look very nice.
I can't wait to see how the ships will look.

Looking forward to boldly going in the MMO space ;)

I never understood the appeal star trek had over my parents and family members. As I grew up I began to see the appeal in each of the star trek shows and movies. Now, as i am in my early thirties, I can understand, appreciate, and even enjoy Star Trek.

I was heart broken when perpetual gave up on star trek online. The star trek series has limitless possibilities and an MMO centered on the star trek universe could expand those possibilities even more. In other words, we can now make our own adventures and go where no man has ever gone before. With cryptic holding the reigns we can now enjoy the star trek universe in a way that we never could before.

Thank you cryptic for keeping STO alive.

I can't think of a better company to have at the head of this, perhaps the most important MMO development in the history of online games. Remember that character customization is nearly as important to this game as it was to CoH. Though I would like to see a bit more uniformness in the uniforms...uniform uniform...aye.

Look to EVE for your space travel influence, because that game has a pretty good lock on that aspect. Perhaps taking a look at where Earth and Beyond went wrong would be a good idea as well.

All in all I can't relate just how excited I am that Cryptic is at the reigns on this one. Live long, and prosper!

I've been a trek fan ever since TNG. I use to watch it every saturday night with my old girlfriend who got me into the show. I never missed an episode of TNG and went to tons of Star Trek conventions meeting a lot of the folks who were on the show. I got into DS9, but it never captured my attention like TNG did. Watched Voyager and enjoyed that series for the most part and I honesty really liked Enterprise, but felt the pulled it just as the series was starting to come into its own. I had watched all the regular Star trek movies, but as I was young when the regular series was on NBC I never really could identify with that crew.

I really look forward to this game! The MMO market is flooded with fantasy games and most of them arent worth playing. There are only a few games coming out in the future devoted to the Sci Fi market and Cyptic can really hit a home run if this game is done right. Wish you all the best and I hope in the future I can in someway help shape the game either through suggestion or actually helping test to make this the best representation of the Star Trek Universe it can be.

This is such great news. I was up last night/this morning as the timer counted down and was listening to the Hailing Frequency's pod cast and navigated to this site with them and saw all the awesome screenies and read all of the news posted by Jack and Co., and thought, Wow, its still alive. Doubts that began to creep into my mind with the long delayed announcement were instantly vanquished when the timer finished this first countdown and the site went live.

Now we have another friggin' timer, but this time we know what it is for and again I eagerly welcome our Timer Overlords and their countdown to gameplay footage for STO.

Can't wait for that. Engaging Time And Relative Dimensions In Space device and moving forward 13 days. See you all then.

There is one thing though, I hope you can be the first DIFFERENT space mmo by having a cockpit view , inside view of the ship your are in not like the EVE mmo wich made a LAME excuse for not having an inside view of your ship by saying that there is a drone above you so you can have a better perspective, there is almost no one here that woulnd't love to have a cockpit view so you can really immerse yourself in the game, so please please don't become just another mmo!

I can't wait for this game to come out. I've been waiting ever since it was announced. I loved City of Heroes so I have faith in Cryptic Studios.

I hope we can build space stations, and be able to not pilot a starship by yourself but have a whole crew of others online to be able to man a ship. For instance, a person who is lvl 20 can be a starship captain. Anyone can be an engineer or a weapons specialist. I hope the battles aren't just a click then watch the battle ensue. I hope you can use the mouse to point were your weapon will hit. I been tired of the same old think where you press a macro or left-click; then watch the battle go on auto. You sit and watch when your character or the other person takes damage and wait and wait. It would be cool to man a Klingon ship and cloak. It would be great to be an engineer and depending on your ability to fix the shields, give more power, fix the weapons systems and life support systems. Would be cool to build colonies or bases on planets, mine astroids and have epic battles on land or in space. For all of this, I wouldn't mind paying a little extra month. LoL Im getting ahead of myself. I hope STO sets a new bar!

I hope I can also join the beta testing when it is announced. Any date?

While I agree that Star Trek was never about a single character, I do think that the "ship" experience -- a dynamic group of diverse and talented crewmembers hailing from varied backgrounds coming together to perform a single task -- is the more defining characteristic of Star Trek's lasting legacy. I look forward to seeing how Cryptic - which did such an impressive job with City of Heroes - will depict this dynamic in Star Trek Online.

I am truely excited about this game, and with Cryptic Studios on the bridge, I'm sure we'll see great things.

If anything, Cryptic's in the Engine Room, making it happen.

Don't worry, we'll get on our bridge soon enough. Quite happy to hear that Cryptic picked the game/license up, as I did not want to see ST:O die.

Please don't make an NGE crap out of it, that's all what I am asking for!

Unfortunately I know, it is impossible to make this only for the ST and the sandbox lovers, because it's about making money again, instead of pleasing the niche market, but I had to say it.

Hope dies last...

Ah, the most-anticipated game in years is finally on the horizon!

It's my fervent hope that this game feels more like Star Trek than SWG did Star Wars.

Congrats on obtaining the IP for ST:O look forward to seeing your vision of the Star Trek World.

Personnally I'm not sure about a console version...but as long as the game play is great and the scope is large I'll be happy. Please don't do a NGE or WoW, Trek is unique and I feel that any MMO for it should reflect that.

Again great news and I look forward to playing ST:O

Jack Emmert, chief creative officer of Cryptic Studios, launches our web site with a letter to the Star Trek Online community:

Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch.

I just heard about Star Trek Online from my family. They sent me the links and what I needed to get started with this, and here I am.

As an avid Star Trek fan since 9/8/66, I have wanted something like this for a long time. I am definitely looking forward to the game.

I do not know anything about Cryptic, but from what all you knowledgable folks say; they are the people I want to have doing this game.

So, GO CRYPTIC, get us going a GREAT Star Trek Online game in the not so distant future and I, for one; will be a very happy Star Trek person (Trekker/Trekkie???????).......

I have been watching the progress of STO for quite awhile. Almost thought it was dead for a time. But now that I see that Cryptic has picked up the reins, my hopes have been renewed.
I just re-logged and registered to this site (I noticed that someone stole my original STO website name....errrr  ), but I'll be here and watching patiently until release.
What I would love to see in this game is a rich, immersive gameplay that will not be a cookie-cutter version of so many other MMORPGs.
I want PvP and PvE.
I don't want to see the almost total gank-fest of EVE, but I also don't want to have my orifices clogged by wads of pink and powderblue carebear cotton broadsides, either.
Balance is a good thing.
Make it so....

Tall Order's from those Immortal word's,

As my senior years come about, I can prolly say with confidence, that as the few " Grey Haired Gamers " of the MMOG community, I am so pleased that Crypitc had the vision and fortitude to bring about what could very well be the best MMOG Liken to NONE ever produced..

Gean Rodenberry left a his mark on generations of TV viewer's accross the planet we call Home.. within in the hope of Star Trek.

Paramount studio's has sought after many deveolpement's of this Legendary gaming premiss, to bring a measure of excellance to the gaming community.

And now with Vision and Reslove it is good to see this development come true, into the MMOG web based Gaming Inviroment it was destine to be....

I salute the effort's of those whom caught the Vision, And wait anquiosly for the debute.

You have taken step's to make a " Real History " unflold before our very Eye's and Ear's, and I will lend to the expertise of the Dev team's, and the artist's, to create a real 3D exepreince.

" Craft your Wear's " Ladies and Gentlemen,

Your audieance await's you...

Nice to return to yesteryear.. and Revisit a positive upbeat topic and commentary thread.. is it not?

Q: Did JFK ask what Cryptic could do for you.. or Whats in funding NASA for me.. .
A: No..

The Nuclei of Trek for me from TOS to Enterprise.. has been the Gateway to the Minds Eye Theater of creativity.

If you meet half your mission statement without thinning the construction cement your score an achievement
worthy of the Legacy..

Thank You,

Star Trek captured the imagination of so many of us.. the adventures of Kirk, Spock, Scott, etc made a huge mark on our society in the sixties.. then came the movies and the Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager (and even Enterprise).. Trek has made it into our lexicon, our imagination, our culture as whole.. how can you NOT be excited about the sci-fi series that let us know that there was Hope in our future; that humankind could change and live up to its promise.

Yes we miss DeForrest and Gene and Majel and James.. but their characters and their dream remain with us.. they always will. There is nothing like Trek... and this game.. this project can be so good if Cryptic can live up to a high standard, listen to the community and do not release the game until they ABSOLUTELY get it right.

I cannot wait for STO... and any true Trekkie or Trekker I am sure, even if they may not admit it, is probably feeling the same way.
