Ship names

Will we be able to name our own ships, or will the ship name be assigned by STO? Will there be an Enterprise, and if so, who will get to be the captain? I bet at least half of everyone would wnat to captain the Enterprise, following in the footsteps of Archer, Kirk, and Picard.

Yes, you can name your ships. And ship names are not unique, so you can name all your ships "billyyanks waggon" if you want. The unique part comes in the registration number for each ship. That cannot be changed (but you can also choose your own number on ship creation I guess).

I think it'd ruin the game tho if there was 100 Enterprises and 100 Voyagers and such. Also it'd be really stinky if people started naming their ships "Voyager B" and "Defiance C" etc as only the enterprise was given the honour of keeping her registery number.

See this is why every Fed player needs to roll up a Klingon so you can blow up those ships that make you angry. I have to agree though that having cannon names used over and over would be a bit lame. I but they'll have those names locked but it wont stop some inventive players from flying the 3nt3rprIs3.

Yep, I agree.

This could also happen with players naming their Captains as well. There may be a filter in place, or a list of 'banned' names that cannot be picked (such us 'Picard' and 'Kirk', and also 'Enterprise') but this will not stop some people trying to find ways around it, which inevitably makes the game less immersive.

it has been revealed by the devs that the copyrighted familiar names (enterprise, defiant, voyager, excellsior, etc...)will not be allowed for player ships. It is likely we will see the TNG era ships (ent-e, voyager, defiant, etc..) as NPC ships, and may encounter them from time to time

other than that, u mak pick what ever name u want. ship names are NOT unique so several people could have the name "good ship lollipop" if the so choose. the reg numbers WILL be unique , though it is unclear weather they will be choosen or assigned.

Yeah, I think users should be more creative with names. I mean, it's time for we players to make names for our own ships, rather than try to command a ship with a famous namesake.
