So, as i browsed the ship tiers and "roles" a question formed in my mind:
Will the player not piloting the combat oriented ship automatically lose a battle against a foe the same size? Or do the science nerds get some nifty tricks to generally mess with opponents?
Like Jamming, all sorts of disruption and stuff?
I sure hope theres a way to techno-bobble through fights...

Oh yeah, Science ships get some nice things that can bring down shields and the ability to sniff our cloaked starships.

so science gets buff/debuff, escort gets more weapons and cannons, and crusers get what big crews and engins?
im really going to half to see this in action to get my head around it.

Science ships are the ships that can affect stats on other ships (drop shields, reinforce shields, things like that)
Escorts are the fast, small ships, which can equp the heavier weapons in the federation arsenal, in other words, cannnon weapons like the Defiant class pulse phasers
Cruisers are larger ships with more crew, cargo bay room, much better shields, and as they are larger than the ote classes of ships, posibly more actural weapons. they are the tanks.

Hopefully support ships and equipment will be more relevant than they are most of the time in Eve. I intend to thoroughly beta test as Science to find out.

It sounds to me like we have the whole tank/healer/dps all over again. I can almost bet that the cruiser will have a way to redirect damage to itself, or "taunt" enemies, escorts will just be high DPS ships, and science wessels will buff and restore shields or something else. I'm not really expecting anything different...

I think it would be cool to be able to bring down shields of another ship. But honestly a science ship could never beat a cruiser unless the captain of the cruiser we inept. However the game I am sure will be made so you can solo it Science vessels will just be a bit harderto do it with. After all it is all about having fun.

Each ship will have advantages and disadvantages over the other classes like any good game should have.
Cruisers are the biggest but the slowest, science is in the middle and escorts are the fastest but the smallest

There can still be role differentiation and support options without invoking the 'holy trinity' (see: CO).
Note that the ships we classically think of as science vessels from canon, with all the durability and combat effectiveness of a wet paper towel, are in the lowest tiers. Moving up, you get ships like the Intrepid-class, which were fairly badass for their size. Then at tier 5 you have the Luna class, of which Riker's post-Nemesis command, USS Titan, is a member, and it was supposedly pretty sturdy in the books. Speaking of that somewhat, I want a Horta bridge officer!
