I know it's been done but instead of necro'ing an old thread I'd restart a nice new fresh thread.

So who do you think or would like to be the Ancient Threat?

During Trek various episodes have hinted at ancient powerful races that are now, supposedly, extinct usually through archeological finds. I'd like to see one these races not be so extinct and back to reclaim their former "glory".

There is already a thread discussing this on the front page of the forums titled - Therory on why species 8472 (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=30403).

I've just contributed my theory in that thread too so I will link (http://forums.startrekonline.com/showpost.php?p=929464&postcount=28) it rather than retype it :)

To summarise I believe many are trying to go too deeply into this, into obscure areas where the common person would not know them. Common person meaning someone who hasn't read all the novels & watched all the shows. Unless, of course, the mention by Cryptic of the 'Ancient Threat' is aimed specifically at hardcore Trek fans & not at the wider audience.

Sounds good to me, I personally am not impressed by species 8472. And by now the borg are getting old.

"i highly doubt its species 8472... there not Acient and there not from this space... there from fluidic space.
and as I'm aware an acient threat would be from our galaxies past."

re-type of my respoce in that thread linked by Katarine

Shatners hairpiece?

not a chance

It would be to frightening for people, one encounter and they would cancel their account.

It was that thread that influenced this one. I just felt that one was too specific to Species 8472 so created this one as a more generalist thread on the topic.

Um, considering Voyager encountered Species 8472 during their journey maybe a little more than 30 years earlier and Janeway/2nd generation of Voyager people are still alive, I don't think you would refer to 8472 as being an "ancient" threat.

I still think it could be the Iconians, as they certainly are ancient and may or may not have been threatening. And the Guardian of Forever is a demonstration that some ancient lore and knowledge is already in the game. However, they are only a very small handful of very small references. I believe there may be either another Crystalline Entity or another Doomsday Machine out there, and that someday, they'll wander into Klingon/UFP territory.

In TOS (season 2 - "By Any Other Name") there was a species that was invading our galaxy from the Andromeda galaxy called the Kelvans. Their scouting party had taken over the Enterprise and was taking it back to the Andromeda galaxy to report back to their empire when Kirk convinced them to stay on a world in our own galaxy since their galactic conquest mission started 300 years ago, and it would take them another 300 years just to get back to Andromeda.

Maybe the Andromedans (Kelvans) are coming back after their lost scouting party?

It could be as simple as the Romulans. Romulan Earth war the 2nd. With the new Borg ship upgrades we will kick your fedrats buff

I'm hoping it's more than just species 8472 ~ it's got to be something epic -- =)

it's also possible that the ancient threat is not from star trek history, but from legends we have here already on earht, a species that visited earth centuries ago.

could be crappy, but could also be made very good.

The Goa'uld, of course. Obviously, the Stargate Worlds development project has secretly gone bankrupt, and cryptic brought the rights for a MASSIVE CROSSOVER!

j/k

I think it's the Parasites from that aborted arc in TNG, I wanna see more of those.

those parasites were originally intended to be the borg, but cost too much on the CGI side so they made the big enemy the Borg

I doubt it's the Doomsday machine. That sounds like a story line that would be difficult to maintain for more than a episode. However I'm still hoping to see the Doomsday machine in the game at some point. It's one of my favorite episodes from TOS.

...fascinating. I think the Borg were probably a superior Big Bad for the series, but I'm curious as to how TNG would have played out if the Parasite invasion continued. Then there's the ripple effects through fandom and popular culture. The Stargate franchise would probably have had to have a whole different premise for their Ancient Astronaut big bads... hmm.

^ This thing.

It would be epic if it was, However as it has been said I would be hard to keep this going all the time. Oh well hopefully we will learn what it is soon.
