Obviously people have the ability to name there own ships, some Starfleet vessels are named for famous people- The Roosevelt and the Newton being just two examples- the question is, which figures from our own time do you think represent the values of the federation and deserve to be honored with a vessel- I KNOW people can choose whatever they want, I was just wondering who we think the prime universe starfleet would feel is worthy- contemporary only please-
My 2 pennys worth:

USS Sarkozy (a well respected and capable figure)
USS Hansen (named for the amazing reporter who does so much to protect the kids out there)
USS Gates (whatever u think of the guy the sheer amount he has given to charity at least gets him an old stargazer class)

USS Rush Limbaugh (just because it is the PERFECT name for an enormous fat bloated galaxy class lumbering around the alpha quadrant doing nothing but driving people into the arms of its sister ship the USS Ted Kennedy

Locking weapons on the Abrams standing by to fire.

USS Joe Biden Anyone- could be the setting for Star Treks first soirtee into comedy series, centred around a gaffe prone and unfit group of officers...

The same could be said about the majority of present day figures and in fact most historical ones to. History remembers what a person did generally speaking rather than the commentary.

With that said it is my hope that we do not see space filled with ships named after present day figures. None of which have yet earned a place in history to the point we can say hey they would remember that.

I'd like to suggest a couple names of people that represent ideas, that I think reflect some aspects of the Star Trek universe. It would be cool to see that the game has a real emphasis (viable game progression paths) on diplomacy, science, design and exploration.

As a model of diplomacy and non violent resistance:
USS Mahatma Gandhi - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohandas_Karamchand_Gandhi

Design/Engineering:
USS Buckminster Fuller - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buckminster_Fuller
USS William Mcdonough - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_McDonough

As an example of exploration that honors the ways of indigenous cultures:
USS Wade Davis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wade_Davis

If and when we are going to fight, let us remember that some of the greatest fighters are also philosophers
USS Bruce Lee - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Lee

the problem is, that you need in my opinion at least one generation to judge about somebody who's important for history. today, we can say, that gorbatchov would deserve a ship named after him, but if obama deserves a ship named after him can be decided in 2 or 3 decades - but not today.

What? No USS Roddenberry? No tribute to the Great Bird of the Galaxy?

Or the USS Takai? Set phasers to FABULOUS!

All the cast members would make excellent names.

As for Roddenberry. He already has a ship named after him. I think one of the Dreadnaughts from the Original Star Trek Technical Manual.

What ideas do you guys have then???

Um. Rush isn't fat and He isn't driving anyone anywhere. He would be better named after a Science class ship. Fairly harmless yet exposing the enemy despite their attempts to cloak.

As for other names you could go political. Any senator or Representative. an Obama would be appropriate. Ships are often named after elected political figures. You could well have an USS William Clinton, USS Algore (hehehe), USS George W Bush, USS Dick Cheney. USS Pelosi. USS Pence. USS Al Franken.

Past that ships are often named after Locations and landmarks but those are generally already well covered. Famous battles or Generals also tend to work USS Patreus, USS Powell. USS Falluja. Of course I'm going from an American viewpoint here. Other nations heroes also would work well as names I just can't think of any other than Montgomery from England who is hardly contemporary.

hmm...

Past that there isn't a whole lot of contemporary stuff that would be appropriate as a name. Of course people are free to name their ships whatever they want I'm just taking this all as a theoretical mental exercise in what might ships be named for based on what we have now.

That being said I Agree whole heartedly with this:

the problem is, that you need in my opinion at least one generation to judge about somebody who's important for history. today, we can say, that gorbatchov would deserve a ship named after him, but if obama deserves a ship named after him can be decided in 2 or 3 decades - but not today.

Ok I have to ask, Why? He hasnt done anything yet. Don't get me wrong I am not anti-Obama.
But just like when he recieved the Nobel Peace Prize, you have to scracth your head and go "HUH????"
Give him his term then evaluate him. Dude hasnt been in office a full year yet and he is already up there with Jesus Christ???
You want to name a ship after a "passed" President that has made a difference "after" his office.
Name it after Jimmy Carter, now that man deserved the Nobel Prize.
Granted he wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes as the Klingon Chancellor, but he is a good humanitarian.
