Following the latest interview with Al Rivera in which he stated.

" Throughout the game you are crafting Bridge Officers. You will acquire new Bridge Officers, skill them up, and train them in new skills. You can train them in several ways, including training skill, finding other Bridge Officers to train them, or acquiring data resources to train them at planet Memory Alpha. You can then trade Bridge Officers to other players, or transfer them back to Starfleet for reputation."

Sounds like pokemon to me!

All we need is Pokeballs! ( The isolinear tags in star trek: insurrection. )

We can capture new officers from the worlds we discover, train them up until they "evolve" ( err, rank up )
then trade em with your friends or give em to Professor Oak ( Memory Alpha. )

I can here it now. . .

"Vucazoid, I choose you!"

"Gotta catch em all, STAR-TREK-MON!"

Seriously though, I'm not a fan of pokemon at all, but I actually do like how BO's will be handled in STO. :)

Pokemon certainly was not the first game to have "pets" that could advance in skill. If that is what the crew system in STO seems like to you, perhaps you are new to MMOs :p

here is the deal

There is NO player crafting...at all, however, they are not allowed to say that cuz it will cost
them subscriptions

so

they say...there are crafting-LIKE things in game...like bridge officers
but that is not crafting....that is pet developement

in the end......they axed player crafting....

either the engine hated it
or
no time to make it
or
boss hated it
or
IP holder hated it
or
<fill in the blank>

it is an old marketing trick...if you don't have something the customer asks for...tell them
you have something just like it....then sell them that...even though it is nothing like it.

This really opens up a huge window for abuse. Here is a glimpse at what my evil mind came up with: USS Escalade-on-22s, with captain Pimpalicious. Bridge is manned by 12 busty female officers: Monica, Takisha, Pamella, Denise, Natasha, Sharika, Serene, Tally, Veronica, Nicole, Serena and Lady-Gaga. I will not be trading this crew for any amount of money or anything else you might offer me.

Regarding the OP, I may have some problems with the way I believe this game is going, but I appreciate the fact they've tried to do something involving the player and their crew.

Its better than having no involvement at all. As a captain, I should be able to recruit crew members at will, and training them is a good level of involvement. They will help me run my ship and even accompany me on away missions.

Swtor is featuring companion play where an NPC follows you around and helps out. STO seems like its going to give me a whole bridge crew to work with however. Pretty darn nifty.

Have no complaint here.

i know im so gone get hated for this but hell the new sto theme song :D

I wanna be the very best
Like noone ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause
I will travel across the Universe
Searching far and wide
Each Bridge Officer to understand
The power that's inside

Chorus
Bridge Officer
It's you and me
I know it's my destiny
Bridge Officer
Ooh, you're my best friend
In a universe we must defend
Bridge Officer
Our hearts so true
Our courage will pull us through
You teach me and I'll teach you
Bridge Officer
Gotta catch 'em all!

Every challenge along the way
With courage I will face
I will battle every day
To claim my rightful place
Come with me, the time is right
There's no better team
Fleet in Fleet we'll win the fight
It's always been our dream

Sadly, this is probably the closest we'll ever get to a Pokemon MMO. :(

the one reason that will never happen is two, simple, words; Team Rocket. people Already troll in MMOs, and Team Rocket is pretty much an orginization of Trolls! people will block off every doorway, singing annoying theme-songs over the general chat...I know this, because thats what I would do!:D

Crafting is something MMOs need to have just for something else to do, and because a lot of people LIKE it. If you don't like crafting, you don't have to do it.

Star Trek canon contradicts itself constantly...the idea that the Federation doesn't use money is an example.

rofl! :D

well maybe you wont trade your crew like pokemons... i mean, you have trained them for yourself more or less. The trading gives you the ability to sell them in case you need money. Or the other way round.. you have too much money and can afford a better crew that saves you time for leveling them on your own.

I'm pretty sure you will get more crew members during missions as you need so you can give your experienced crew members to some new players in your fleet.. so they have a benefit from it.

Kado2

Star Trek canon contradicts itself constantly...the idea that the Federation doesn't use money is an example.

This is very very true. In some episodes of the shows it seems like they almost have to use money. And no offense to Roddenberry dream of a moneyless economy, but I simply couldnt see an institution like the federation not using money. You may get one world that would agree to not use money, but no way are you getting hundreds. If theyre using that as an excuse to not have crafting then its simply ridiculous. I mean there has to be crafting somewhere, eventually, otherwise it will get real boring real fast for a lot of people.

Durakken
11-03-2009, 05:13 AM
The federation itself doesn't use "money" however starships run on a limited supply so they use credits representing how much a person is alotted so that a ship doesn't run out of fuel in the middle of a trip. They also use a form of bartering with other cultures which is probably somewhat like we have today... a federation citizen has a "credit" account in that it provides a record of the transaction between other cultures, that is paid by the federation. There is however no currency in the way we think of it between individuals because there is no need.

Well you can't build a game 100% according to a film, there are always things that you need to adjust... like introducing money in STO.

A different example books... There are always changes, even when they are little, when they make a film according to a book.

You won't have fun with a game that is 100% like the movies.

And like the 2nd generation of Pokemon games you may receive anything like this through your Pokédex:

"... I have spotted (insert rare species of Pokemon here) flocking here as though there was no tomorrow..."

And now, in Star Trek:

"Hailing frequencies open"
"Captain, I have spotted Commander Salamence in the Chinpokomon system"

A few minutes later...

"Set course for Chinpokomon! Arm the Pokeball launcher!"
