Will the Bridge officers have voices? Or will they just communicate through text in a pop-up window?
Voices would much more immersive.

In a recent interview Craig said they're experimenting with voiceovers for ship combat - "shields at 40 percent", stuff like that. But I don't think there will be full voice acting like there is in SWTOR.

Most likely not. Can you imagine the number of voice actors they'd have to hire to make it worth it and not redundant?

Well they don't need a different voice actor for each part. Look at TV shows like The Simpsons - one actor does voices for something like 7 regular characters and another handful of miscellaneous characters. It's possible for good voice actors, and I'm pretty sure Bioware is taking this approach.

Bridge voice overs are being looked at to create a more realistic "bridge chatter" since the MMO lacks bridge play / interiors at launch. I would much rather be able to see and fight from my bridge but we won't get into that tired debate. As long as it's not annoying for a BO to tell me over and over that I am taking hull damage it will be kinda 'OK'.

I think Voice overs would be great. Much better than pop up chat windows. I mean, what BOff would take the time to type "Shields at 40 percent" and put it on the view screen, when they could just yell it at you?
I hope Cryptic does this.

You wouldn't need to use voice actors, you could use computer generated voices (not unlike that used in GPS turn-by-turn navigators). Then when you setup a new BO you could select the voice you want for each one.
Watching the demos, the pop-up looks like it would be annoying. Especially if it were to appear in the middle of combat.

I think it is a good idea to add flavor to the game. Some games have chatter options such as verbose, normal and none.
Basically you want to make it like chatter that is a bit random. If it sounds like bridge chatter and isn't predictable it would be welcome addition. This would require several different voice options for each crew though.
It can be done but is it worth it? I don't know.

UT2004 and UT3 had a text to voice option. If some one sent a txt in chat the game spoke it.

I just hope we can add a personality to our Bridge Officers, and not just stats. And I'd like something like the banter in BG2, though without pre-designed officers I don't see how that's practical. That's more for a single player game anyways.
I'd like to add personality, but atm I have no idea how they could do it in the context of an MMO. :\
