I've noticed in games like SWG and WoW, it seemed like you could walk right through furniture. Were those bugs or a way to prevent characters from getting stuck next to each other since there could potentially be thousands on a map at once. the only reason i ask here is i was curious whether STO would be the same way.

Hmm.. I don't know if those were bugs or not. I know on some on my Single player games, you cannot, and it is INCREDIBLY annoying to get stuck on a couch, or a tree so small you should be able to step right over it. Walking through furniture does not bother me, though I suppose it would add to the immersion factor if you could not.

And for a Klondike Bar? I believe I would drive to the store as well.. none of that rubbing my mother-in-law's feet!!

As far as what if gathered from my reading it seems like the game has fully collidable objects or at least characters. From what I've noticed in champions online everything is collidable even chairs and tables etc.

STo won't be any different from that. But I'm sure just like in any other game you might be able to get stuck and thus the /stuck command. which works just fine in C:O

That depends on your mother in law, some mothers in law are HOT.;)

Well, considering I'm a girl.. it would be really creepy if I thought my mother in law was hot...:p

They weren't bugs, but a mechanism to prevent griefing. For some odd reason, there are players that get a kick standing in a doorway essentially trapping players inside.

every time you put colision detection into a mmo you automatically increase the amount of CPU load the server has to contend with, because basically all that your computer does is display some pretty graphics and translates a stream of x/y/z coords from the server and some other jiggery pockery.

So i would rather we walked through everything but had a lag free rubberbanding free game :)

Wow. i didnt realize it was that complex. Ok, well i guess it's better with the collision detection.

i also see everything like that as fluff that neither makes a game or breaks a game.

Doors and walls are fair game but getting stuck on every single bit of geometry a designer puts into a game is a big no no. Hell i used to get stuck on the wells in dark age of camelot and they are stationary objects.

i suspect in the future when higher speed broadband and higher spec machines become the norm you will see more imersive mmos. With realistic fluid dynamics and truely destructable scenery (apart from lego online).

Until then be prepared to walk on top of tables shimmy through chairs and have the illusion broken

that's good to know. it finally makes sense...i just thought every MMO had the same problem.
