View Full Version : Non-Combat Gameplay Confirmed!

From the latest interview with Andy V.:
"A8: Many past Star Trek games have failed because the series’ pacifistic nature doesn’t always translate well into action-orientated videogames. Will there be the option to negotiate with hostile races in a diplomatic manner?
AV: Yes there will be diplomatic and non-combat missions for players to engage in. Whether you are transferring commodities, delivering supplies or investigating unknown space anomalies players who want to can find things to do that don’t involve their ship’s phaser arrays.
That being said 2409 is considerably less peaceful than when the shows and movies left the fans and the Federation is on the brink of all out war. So players should expect to see their fair share of enemy encounters. "

Yeah it's been confirmed for over a month now... :)
people are just mad that they haven't seen anything of it yet. :)

I thought this was confirmed several months ago... They just haven't shown any specifics on it yet. It might not be as abundant as many hope for, but they have said there would be non combat gameplay from the beginning.

We've known about the non-combat aspects of the game for some time. We just haven't seen any of it because ferrying cargo from one system to another or using long-range sensors to scan for lifeforms doesn't make for particularly compelling game footage.
The beta testers are the first ones getting a look at the other sides of the game, and I suspect we'll be hearing about it before long as the beta progresses and information begins to leak (and it WILL leak).

Indeed...and who knows, we seen screens of non-combat situations involving starships and away teams so maybe we have seen a pic of a starship doing science research...it is just hard to identify since there isn't any visual give-away like there is with combat screens.
There is still several months left before release and CZ said that they aren't doing their Klingon marketing push until November/December so we all just need to be patient for gameplay footage regarding non-combat missions. Who knows, maybe we'll all be in beta by then and can experience it first hand...

Which means that this is an excellent time to remind you all of one of our forum rules:
"Posting Unreleased Content / Hacking Data Files
Posts and/or private messages that contain language, comments, references, links, symbols, terms and/or content that, in any manner whether directly or indirectly, show/display and/or discuss any of the following may be subject to an infraction: (a) unreleased in-game items or equipment; (b) areas that have been unlocked by hacking into client data files; and/or (c) data not available through normal game play."
If you happen to find a leak, do not post or link to it here or on these forums. Doing so will result in an immediate permanent ban from the forums. I really don't ever want to have to do that. So please consider yourselves warned, and if you find a leak, let us know via PM, but do not post it on the forums.

Hmm, as much as I want to jump into a soverign class ship, theres definite appeal to crusing around the fringes of the galaxy in unexplored space, ferrying cargo, engaging in diplomatic missions and beaming down to various exotic locations and planets ruled entirely by women and/or apes!

If you enjoy doing hundreds of milkruns in a row, by all means :p
But it's nice to know there'll be a mix of things to do in STO, that's what makes good MMOs work =)

Stormshade, what do we do if we CAN'T access PMs? I am not asking this to be a smart alec, but since account creation, I have not been able to access my PM's at all. All I ever get is "Mail Service is currently down". In the case of PM's effectively being inaccessible to us due to a glitch (I tried accessing PM's in IE as well as Opera [with site preferences editted to identify as IE, which is a handy fix for Opera's site compatibility problems]), what would be the next best way to report a leak/bug?

action-orientated videogames
I read this part of the article and couldn't help but think...
Oriented. Oriented. Oriented.
Sorry. "Orientated" is one of my pet peeves. On a more relevant note, I'm really interested in what the non-combat aspect will be like, as all the footage we've seen has understandably been full of phaser fire.
Actually, I have to wonder...going out and exploring all alone seems like it would be that much more dangerous. You never know what you'll find out there; it seems like the exploration route would be equally fraught with danger. I wonder how perilous the far reaches of space will be.

yeah, I'm looking forward to doing the less combat orientated stuff, even if we've known about it for a while, it's good to hear and see other people have an interest in it ^_^

This is quite possibly some of the best news to come out about the game so far. I'm a player that absolutely loves non-combat content, so the more of it that ends up in the game the better -- no matter how tedious some players might think it is. I'm a firm believer that having a wide variety of content available outside of combat is what really helps to build the overall universe of a game, because it not only breaks up the monotony of constantly fighting something but also provides a greater sense of what life would really be like in the Star Trek universe.

One of the mods probably already tried to address your problem when they saw your sig and sent you a pm about it. When you didn't reply to the pm they assumed you were either ignoring them or didn't have a problem so they didn't pursue the matter.

I for one am really glad to see that we will have non-combat options. The only problem I will have is trying to decide if I want to go discover that new planet or joint that fleet to stomp all over those Klingons.

Anyone else notice the part where STO is 'much more hostile' than fans of the show might be used to? Sounds like an emphasis on combat to me. But I am sure they will give me something to do quietly while a majority of the galaxy is opening fire on each other and NPC's.
I thought perhaps deep space exploration would be fun...but didn't they hint strongly a fair time back that deep space would be Open PvP? I may have to play Klingon (for a cloaking device) to explore without getting jumped constantly :(

This is very good news - ok we knew about it before but it's nice to read reaffirmation of this intent.
Non-combat content is what gives the game life, it's what gives the combat content meaning, context, purpose and brings it all to together so the game can become much more than the base sum of its parts.
Ok, so I'm one of those imaginative people who loved to play "Frontier: First Encounters" way, way, way beyond the end of scripted content - because the Elite universe felt like space, vast and unexplored and full of challenge.
One just need apply a little imagination and you're in another universe, another time, another life. It's fun! :D

Assuming of course that you know yourself that it is a leak. Can sometimes be difficult to distinguish a leak from released information by a publisher/developer.

Next use you common sense on the post like picking the right title and now just posting something from the article.
Like 1 you title and the article doesn't fit. It just giving us something to expect to do for non-combat stuff and we already knew for a long time there going to be Non-combat stuff to do anyways. Cause all you title does it looks like it is trying to look ignorant to those that already know and tried of people complain about not getting non-combat info.
So you should have title it along the lines of "Some Info on Non-combat game play" or "A8 non-combat info."
Then you could link the Article and the put the part about non-combat and say what you thought of it.
Next time think before you post.
