I really hope the in-game ship to ship chat is allowed to be cross faction and you must acknowledge a hail to initiate. This will really capture the feel of Star Trek immersion.
STO is not a sim so odds are that you can chat an sent a tell an they or you will get what ever there telling you.

Yes, I agree. We have only ever seen the requirement for hails to be acknowledged in ST and it seems to fit with other MMO chat schemes I have seen (namely EVE where you have to accept a chat inviation from someone else before the converstion can commence).

I would be happy if they just made that the thing you hear when receiving a tell.

As long as it was an optional sound that could be turned off. It might be cool the first few times, but after awhile I could see it getting very annoying.

Not being a sim has nothing to do with it. EVE online pops up with a message box stating that user A is wants to open a private convorsation with you. So why can't STO?

True, optional would definitely be the way to go.

STO is not EvE an odd are they will do it like most mmo's have it set up. An with all there other MMO's set up the old way odds are it will be set up just like CO. an being in a quest under attack would bug me if things just pop on screen.

Yeah if they make it so that we cant talk to the Klingons or we have a selection of chat things to say and cant just say what ever we like... then that would make me sad.... possibly relationship ending.

I am fully aware that STO is not EVE, I was simply using this as an example that it could be done. And also there is an option to turn this feature off within EVE or have it automatically accept/decline such messages so you never recieve a pop up.

Think all he meant was that everything we see on a bridge of a starship probably will not be translated perfectly into the game. But I agree there's no reason not to have a little window pop up from my comm officer asking to accept an incoming transmission.
Just so it is something that can be turned off as I see this driving the PvP insane.

I'd hope the cross faction chat can only be initiated with a vessel in sight. Requiring you to click the vessel to send a chat invite.
That it be direct/personal chat(that can be grouped with more than one person), not "local". That Local be same side only.
IM might be ok, but should have a delay...so may be it wouldnt be really Instant Messaging...just email/perosnal messaging.

Hello, and welcome to the Star Trek Online forums!
While it was mentioned earlier as a possibility, in an interview on October 9th 2009, Daniel Stahl (an STO producer) said, "We’re not going to build yet another integrated voice chat solution. Most of the players that want it already have a better option."

That would be cool indeed! :D And when you're hailed, you will see a pop-up with the other characters avatar just like when your BO's are talking to you!

This is exactly why i'm trying to make a website for hailing purposes..... alt tab to video conference with other website members..... i'm doing this @ www.sub-space.info
For now it will be for fleet members only and the web video conferencing isnt built just yet so no need to flock all @ once but with any luck i'll have it running by release.

just because the game is not a sim, it does not mean that the dev's couldnt simply code in a yes/no prompt to the recipient of the personal "tell" message
the idea itself makes sense for this IP, and would be a very very minor thing to add to help improve the overall ST feel...sim or not
people sometimes are just SOOOOOO quick to write things off under the flag of "its not a sim so your point is meaningless"
sheesh
