Pie... although a ranking system would need to be figured out for the flavors of various denominations.

The Federation doesn't use currency. We practice Communism without calling it Communism and create things out of thin air. We explore space and meet strange new races not for teh moenyz, but because we just wanna do it.

100 SSSB (Self Sealing Stem Bolts) = 1 GPL (Gold Pressed Latinum)

Gold Pressed Latinum is the only currency i know of that is widely enough used in the Alpha/Beta quadrant to make sense in an MMO.
They even have the denomination worked out
Slip, Strip, Bar and Brick.
I think that would work out well.

How about you just give me what I want, or you'll be on the business end of a Disruptor.

Enough kidding around tho.
Cryptic will use Merit points or something, check dev chat 9/22:
<Bizarro_Rekhan> <herocreator> You mentioned that you will be advancing through the ships. How exactly will the mechanic work to acquire them? Will it be mission based, where you do a big mission for your faction that requires the ship so they give it to you or will it be more traditional, requiring the player to "purchase" them (though without money I am not sure how it would work).
<snix> Characters gain the right to command larger ships by advancing in rank. As part of a rank promotion, they acquire one new ship of the appropriate size. In order to gain additional ships of that size, extra Merit with Starfleet must be expended.

That deals only with buying additional ships from Starfleet.
That does not deal with buying items from a non-starfleet but still federation source, or buying items from a neutral faction etc etc.
Nor does it count play to play economy.

Perhaps it's just a barter system. You procure resources, like dilithium, and trade them at starbases for items or other resources. I know that could be messy, it is more likely that they have a real currency in place.

I've always wondered why they choose GOLD pressed Latinum. The Latinum was the valuable part, why waste the energy to press it in Gold? Why not cheap lil vials of glass? Any opinions on that?

Its just a term ... like "minted coins" is today. It stems back to when some coins were still forged, not minted, and its just stuck as colloquial term to refer to government authorized tender.
And I mean 'forged' as in the manufacturing process ... not "faked".

in the 24th century Gold is a next to worthless material.
In an episode of DS9 that centers around quark and his ever continuous quest for Latinum he finds a crate full of Gold Pressed Latinum bricks.
He climbs into the crate with the latinum and is rapturous with joy that he is now so rich, so very very rich.
Then one of the bricks breaks in his hand and it's full of Gold shavings.
he then exclaims
"Gold? It's just gold....It's worthless, i have nothing!" (or something along those lines)
Gold can be replicated on whim. Latinum is valuable and used as a currency because it's one of the few 'safe' elements in the trek universe that can't be replicated and thus must come from a natural source.

yeah but then in another episode when Quark goes back in time he is willing to accept gold as payment for technology from the US government.... So in every respect even in DS9 where they delt with it the most... Star Trek and money has neverbeen well defined... I think this is one of hte main things that Crpytic is going to have to work out...
P.S. Yeah USS Parallax you should totally linky this thread to that one.... ok ok ill do it!

do we even know there will be commerce outside of your faction at all? hence the need for currency, merit within ones faction is away to do do away with the concept of monetary but still have 'something' to take its place, sorta like influence in COH since your supposed to altruistic and above monetary concerns...
just wondering if their is even gonna be a need for a actual currency, have they ever stated that flying neutral faction ships, or using neutral faction components is going to be allowed ?
imagine the headache of gaining currency of several different factions, who knows maybe you just have to do missions and get status with other factions, if they decided to go down the road of allowing cross-faction commerce
