I was wondering if we would have the option to not display our affliation tags, yet still be capable of easily identifiying members of the same affliation.
This wouldnt necessarily have to affect PvP or threat flagging.

I don't think that you will have the option to not publcly display your guild tag, but I would bet money that you can turn off guild tags to displaying on self so that it looks like you don't have your guild tag out to you.

The more likely option is just being able to turn off your own name. Anyway, turning off fleet tags isn't something that's likely to make it into the game, as the whole point of a fleet is for you to be identified as a part of it. Besides, there really isn't any reason to want to turn off guild tags, not a tangible one anyway.

Ah, if only you could see the wonderful combat tactics brewing in my mind. Some war for recognition, others like myself, war for tactical and strategic victory...there is no room for vanity!

heh Have they said anything about Fleet identifiers yet? I think my ships should get capes with the fleet emblem. :D
How is showing your association being vain? That's kind of like saying that Starfleet officers should not have the option of showing they're in Starfleet, for the sake of modesty. I'd say either you're affiliated or not. If you're flying incognito in my fleet, I'd wonder why you're too embarrassed to carry your tags (or what rules you're breaking...). :)

In wow if I remember correctly it's the viewer that gets to decide if they view other player's guild tags/titles/name. I personally like that way of doing things. If you are going to join a guild/fleet you need to deal with the consequences of being associated with being apart of that group.

I don't want my name to be the SIGN that lights me up like a damn beacon in space, yea i know in pve it doesn't mather but as i like to pvp it's a giveaway.
Who knows, hope you can turn it off or im not joining a fleet and will be having a very short name... :)

It's been awhile since I've played a game where the guild/clan tags aren't limited to just 4 letters in brackets... if you see me in CoD I'll be sporting [A82A] and in GW it was [LGND]. In all honesty I was kind of expecting something like that, with maybe some kind of graphic or other indicator on the hull of your ship (near the ship name). What exactly is it that people are worried about giving them away?

I'd assume it would still be possible to identify my affilition...Im more than willing to accept the consequences of my group...but I'd rather not have a beacon for attackers or targets to key in on too easily.

Some people sport their tags like big red coats. As some announcment of awesomeness complete with ceremonial horns and their chests puffed out.
My hope is that my band of brothers and sisters will not, but instead our presence will be announced with out fanfare, but preceeded by silence and the complanceny of our opponents. That we slip away victoriously just as quietly into the shadows and depths of space. Our deeds spoken after the fact in whispers from the lips of the vanquished.

How do they know it wasn't just a pickup group if you didn't have tags? ;) 'Just another PuG' doesn't do much for deed whispering. If you really want the 'We got beat by a PuG' effect, then have a fleet without having an actual fleet. You'll have to do that scenario a lot though, before anyone catches on to the fact that it might not be just another PuG.
Truth is, the only fleets that can carry their titles like that are the ones who've earned that respect (and I think should bear it as a matter of honor). If it's anything like GW, almost everyone is going to be in a fleet, even if there's only 2 or 3 members. It's far more likely that in any given encounter, no one will have ever heard of you before-thus it'll be no different from not having a tag.
Fanfare? That would be an awesome fleet perk. You'd have to overcome the no medium in space for sound problem though. Maybe a firework show instead, have your flagship lead the pack with flares and stuff. :D
heh Not to shatter your romantic notions or anything. It is poetic.

Im actually considering this...but it will require a bit more coordination outside and inside the game.

You'd go to that much effort just to have something like <32nd Recon Division> not show up under your name? I honestly don't see why you're looking to have it not be displayed, your ship itself lights up like christmas tree on everybody's display anyway.

You are thinking to short-sighted...the plans for 100 victories are laid well before the enemy is ever met.
The choices you make in war extend beyond your present battle.

I don't know if this is gonna be a problem in STO and not all games have a problem with it, but i'll give an example: In world of warcraft pvp the first thing i see when meeting a group of enemy player in the open is the big "SIGN" of there names\guild, when they get closer you see more of the chars.
I want it to be the other way around: First you see Ship\char and then Name\Fleet or whatever.
