I, for one, haven't seen anything to suggest there will be an announcement "tonight". Zinc did say in an interview that there will be a press release in the days to come. I would love for it to be announced and Closed Beta started by the end of the week but until I see something more definite, I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Just ask any Alpha tester!

Of course, they won't tell you anything, especially that they would be in Alpha.. but.. they would *know*.

Knowing is half the battle they say, beating the ever loving tar out of them seems to be the other half of that battle.

So.. get out of the spacedock, fire up the warp engines, raise shields and do as Kirk would do.

If we didn't rake them over the coals every time they give us guesstimate, or miss something like the Friday screen shot ... he'd probably be a lot more comfortable with coming on here and giving us a heads up of where they think they are.

But since we do rake them over the coals, and since we do QQ every time they miss something (God forbid they be sick, or busy) ... I don't blame him for leaving us in the dark.

I realize the CO and STO divisions are separate, but I do wonder if they'd start STO beta right when it would draw potential players aways from their sister game's first high-profile shindig?

Bad for business and marketing, to have two separate "game press worthy" events going on simultaneously?

Well, it's getting rather late in the business day here in the central time zone, and press releases aren't usually posted late in the day, so I'm thinking no announcement today if we don't hear anything in the next three hours. I think everyone just hopes it's soon. The game releases in five months . . . how can they do this without some mass testing? That probably worries a couple people. I know I paid for the six month sub to CO just to get in on the Beta so I'm really anxious myself . . . but I agree that threads like this don't help. believe me, when there is a closed beta test in the way im sure people are spending extra hours on the job making sure everything is ready for us to start testing so i would not be surprised if they are still working, but like you said maybe they are not. no one knows unless you work at Cryptic.

Heh heh... I know how ya feel. If there is someone you trust to check your e mail for you, then you could do that! If the beta key dissapears when YOU check your email... it should remain safely in your inbox if sombody ELSE checks it for you. Gotta try and trick that beta key! :cool:

Star Trek Online, the upcoming MMORPG based on the popular science fiction universe, will be released during the first quarter of 2010, developer Cryptic has confirmed to VideoGamer.com.

Can you comment as to whether or not the Official Closed Beta client will be running during the Expo show at the MGM on the 30th as mentioned in that article? Or will it be some exclusive, not connected client that's there just for show (similar to how Age of Conan did for their shows before their game's launch)?

I know that these threads of people squirming around must be the butt of all jokes at Cryptic. But I can't blame them, we've been ready for the game for a while and we can see light at the end of the tunnel for a release.

I do think that the beta will start late October or first week of November, I just don't see it starting any later to get a proper shake-down.

I doubt that is what "the announcment" is. That wasn't made by Cryptic.. it was made by a third party if you notice, and in a very obscure spot. That would not warrent a dev post to tell us to wait for that.

Soon™ has been around forever, the players started adding the ™ to it because it became the standard canned answer from devs/community reps whenever anyone asked a question about upcoming content.

If they only have 8 stations, we don't have to worry about 100s of players on the server.

A server crash is always a concern, even when you've brought the hardware with you. But when you've brought it with you, you only have a couple of people to work through the problem, where if a server back at corporate goes south ... you can just flip over to another server until the fix the other.

And allowing people to play on the beta server during an expo != to opening beta.

They want to showcase the game at the expo. The server will be local, with only the people there online. It won't be attached to the "real" beta. I think what they mean is that it will be the same client that we will be playing on. It won't be connected to Cryptic studios, it will be connected to a server at the expo.
