You may ask. What does that mean? How is this defined?
Well let me start by just paraphrasing a little something i found using Cryptic as an example. (I do not represent Cryptic officially)
"Soon" does not imply any particular date, time, decade, century, or millennia in the past, present, and certainly not the future. "Soon" shall make no contract or warranty between Cryptic and the end user. "Soon" will arrive some day, Cryptic does guarantee that "soon" will be here before the end of time. Maybe. Do not make plans based on "soon" as Cryptic will not be liable for any misuse, use, or even casual glancing at "soon".
Another common term implemented by Cryptic often misleading players into excitement. "Very Soon" is guaranteed to arrive between now and the end of time with a higher chance of arriving on the "now" half of the time table. Although this means closer to now than "soon" there is no guarantee that you will live long enough to see it finally release.
I hope everyone now understands what 'Soon' really means, and you unofficially know the beta release date.
Edit: http://twitter.com/Cryptic_Stormy , "The closed beta for STO will begin "soon (tm)". ;-)"

If only your explaination of soon applied to homework!
"Yes, Mrs. English teacher lady, I shall turn in that essay soon." 20 years later... xD
Very good explaination though, it's pretty accurate in this case.

Oeh, soon is better than end of the year or something.
Can't wait, with reading all the previews, interviews, dev chats and Q&A's i wonder if the feel that were getting is really the feel of the game :D

Close! It is actually a wiki that started a few years ago that ended up making it on the forums. I think it started right around the turn of BC, since it took them forever to release it.
On a realistic beta note

Cryptic took beta applications for only 1 month for CO.
It's been almost 2 months now that STO applications have been open.
In addition, we are only 4-5 months away from launch.
Clearly, Beta is overdue.
2 - 3 weeks is too far away. There will be a Beta announcement this week for sure. 100%

Actually that makes tactical sense. Who developed Dragonage????? The same company that is developing what will most definitely be STO's major competition SW:TOR ...BIOWARE.
I see the logic, launch your beta and try to eat into their profits to in effect hamper the companies ability to take their time and put out a solid product....nice planning Cryptic.
Muahahahahaha
