Press Release just means they're going to release some info about the beta, ossibly includeing when its takeing place. HOWEVER, they could say "Beta will start in 2 months" orrr, they could say "Beta will start in 2 minutes"

IF the Feb. 2nd street date that Amazon and Gamestop are guessing at are correct, then a public closed beta starting at Nov. 2nd would make sense. That way they have three months for beta. IMHO that's far too short a time for a TRUE beta, but I think Cryptic is being pressured by CBS and creditors to release "on time" to get some revenue in. I think they will be using beta to catch as many bugs as possible before they ship the game and hope it doesn't turn out too bad to drive people away after the first month.

I doubt they will start the Beta on a weekend since no one will be in the office. I suspect the press release will announce when it will start. Then the actual start on a Monday or Tuesday.

I'm guessing that the press release will come out tomorrow or thursday, and say that beta is starting right away. Keys and software will probably be sent to the beta testers the same day as the press release, with the servers coming online within a week

I really don't have a dog in this fight ... I want beta to start when the game is ready.

But just because there's an new release coming out about it, in no way means beta starts the next day. It could be a press release saying how they are going to handle their beta ... or it could outline how beta is going to be slowly implemented over the next 4 weeks ... or it could be that they are finally opening it up to the press for test for the next 4 weeks.

You guys really need to sit and and relax ... :)

When you get the email telling you where to download the client ... THAT's when you get excited.

I highly doubt everyone (who will actually get in) will get access on the same day any how ... people will be phased in over a period of time as they see how the system handles the load ... and that period of time, in itself, could be month(s).

Startrekonline.com and the Forums are being redesigned as we speak to accomodate the Closed Beta. I kinda suspect the new web site will go live first. I think that's a better indicator than this upcoming press release.

Wow. Speculation aside, as somebody who's been watching this game from the Perpetual days, this is almost like the ending/beginning of a new era. It's something that a lot of us weren't sure was *ever* going to happen, and now we're only weeks, perhaps days away. I for one, feel like celebrating. As soon as we get the Beta Client, I suggest we all crack open a beer, do a shot of Tequila and sacrifice a goat. (but not Craig's, she gets a free pass)

I think why we're so anxious for the beta to start is that this game has been in development for a long time with other publishers. So making beta means that there will be a launch.

My concern is how good that launch is. I really hope that CO was a great testbed and that there will be adequate time for testing. Problem is, there are some problems that require a large population of players to have and that there are always random bugs, even/especially with random generated content. Textures not applying right or holes, incorrect model usage, etc are all things to look for. So the Genesis thing may be what needs more testing than anything else.

And preferably it does start this week so that that work can get busy for early Q1 release... I'm getting nervous about it being ready for release. The powers that be seem more interested in money and may have forgotten that patience is a virtue--that tends to have better rewards...

Vorador, I've always wondered why you want that date... It strikes me that it doesn't allow for a Q1 release if they want at least 4 months testing... And sorry for some who want it to wait till their 18, but look if it hits beta sooner, the sooner it can be released polished.

Just to add another thought, I highly doubt we'll see a press release this Thursday as I predict a certain company from Redmond will be flooding the internet with their own big launch.

I just don't think STO would get noticed in all the Windows 7 noise.

I would really enjoy the chance to help Cryptic 'kick the tires' on STO, but I have that sinking feeling that my name is in a huge fishbowl and that I have to rely on random selection to get in :(

I too am looking forward to the opportunity to kick the warp nacelles with Cryptic here. But since I've not entered any comps (trivia comp is usually at ungodly am hours here) and didn't get CO I'll have to patiently wait and hope a pass eventually comes my way.

I'm not sure if Klingons will be available or not in closed beta. In one of the recent interviews, Zinc states that there will be a big push on Klingon content, etc. in November or December.
