Just a quick question that may have already been answered but it got in my brain and wont leave. In STNG (and additional series onward,) a little plot device used to leave the enterprise exposed was the ejection of the warp core adding tension to each episode that was used in. My question is this; in STO will there be situations when the player may have to eject their warp core resulting in a ship based mission/quest or are we leaving this plot device out?

I dont think they have covered this. It would be neat if the ships could do that. you might want to do a search on the forums, i seem to remember a thread about warp cores in combat situations. The question would/could have been answered there.

I hope not. You'd be stranded. That would suck!

Not for everyone .....<Locks Target on Stranded Vessel. Prepares to uncloak, weapons ready...:)>

Other than a plot device for a mission, I really can't see where a player would actually do that to 'survive'. I suspect the death penalty won't be overly harsh, and that a player would simply just die and restart, rather then do something like ejecting the warp core and become sitting prey for any passerby.

TIME FOR ASSIMILATION, WHEN YOU EJECT THAT CORE....:D

The Reason why I would eject it would be to throw it against a borg cube :P

Wow, i think we may have discovered a few cases where this would be feasible, Borg attack being one of them. In most cases though I'd guess that it would establish something along the lines of an instance where you would phase out of the normal game server into a mock version of your ship. contact for a rescue, repel invaders or pull a Jordy and duct tape a working engine together till you get to a resupply point. remember we still have impulse power and there are the equivalent of tugboat class star ships in the cannon. only problem would be that you would be stuck in doing this quest which would be an interesting feature for an mmo to lock you into something preventing you from exploring/completing other quests. great reward for it though, can you say forced upgrade on your engineering crew.

Not neccessarily,, they could simply end it with a waiting period where you have to wait for an AI ship to appear and maybe it could be a repair ship too!!.. Fix you right up there on the spot.. but only after like say 1min or 5 min wait time.

I'm sure you can be towed at warp, so as long as you have friends............. ;)

The warp core would make a nice little bomb for an unexpecting guest suddenly arriving. Drop, move away, and shoot, boom boom happy time :)

that would be a great ability in a group for say a cruiser. Nothing like a finishing move that puts you out with the ultimate global cool down while the science ship repairs you... send in the off tank.

i dont think you can eject your warpcore at release maby something to add in a expantion.

so many trap doors with that a big fleet could just drop there cores all over the neutral zone and make it into a deadly minefield. just shoot 1 core wich will detonate the rest fleetwarps in and gets totaly pwned by a massive detonation shockwave.

even win major pve events just drop all you cores and wach the borg cubes go up in flames

you can vent warpplasma tho thats a interesting tactic on its own.

i dont think they will add it tho people might miss click while on deep exploration and get stuck 48hours from the nearest starbase at full impulse lol.

all that would be funny getting a hail plz destroy me i ejected my warpcore. then just disable the entire ship so he cant move at all and just laugh when you go to warp. ofc somepeople would go back afther a hour and disable the ship again for a other laugh.

What about an instance quest where you have to jetting the core and find a way to get home. Solar sails might be a possibility. It be similar to the wrath gate quest line in that it places you in a phased zone while you run around your ship calling for help, brainstorming with your engineering crew and getting to know your crew. the rewards might be an improved warp core, smarter engineering or even an upgraded ship. Star trek is full of these varying types of plot devices and exploring these would definitely give an edge on the mmo market as well as satisfying some Trekkies and veteran mmo players out there looking for a legitimate Star Trek experience.

Well you could like "eject the warpcore" and ignite it, and have it on a 15 min cd before you get your warpcore back.

Kinda like those special abilities with a mayor cooldown

hmmm... i'd be in favor of it, but limiting it since it's always used as a last ditch resort. a cooldown timer wouldn't fit that, as you'd just launch it at the beginning of every fight.

I'd be in favor of enabeling ditching the core after a certain % of health is left. like 15% hull strenght left at which point, a warp core breach is immenent.

If you happen to do so, and win the fight, you will still need to wait 5 minutes before a repair ship warps in with another core (you can fly around but only at impulse, so you need to stay in the same system).

This might sound limiting, but remember, in the series no captain ditched the warp core unless they really really had to. And it'll result in one heck of an explosion (which you yourself will need to get away from) so that should be worth it.
