I know this has been asked before, and by myself not less, but now we have more information about the basic roles and what ships you'll get your hands on I'll reiterate as to what profession (or class if your prefer) shall you be.
On a side not I certainly hope we get a Klingon listing soon for our KDF friends (at least forum friends hehe).
After the release of the Discovery class I've stuck to firm science. I'm out to explore the galaxy.

Science: Previous to taking his first command, Vaebn Soramoto worked ship side operations and analysis on a covert pre-contact cultural survey team.

Betazoid Tactical Officer commanding a Cruiser (like a Galaxy). Prepared for deep space exploration, and anything it can throw at me :p
... but I MAY go science....

Tactical focusing into getting into an Intrepid. My experiments will involve the effects of energy and explosives on Various Hulls. While they have always seemed consistent in the past, one can never be too sure.

Before I was 95% going to chose science.
Now I am about 60% leaning toward science, 30% engineering, 10% tactical.
If a stealth ground combat role exists I'll probably also make a Klingon officer that does the whole stealthy thing, whatever career that is.

So the same position as Wesley?
I will probably go with Tac/Cruiser

haha... why does everyone make fun of Wesley? haha.
Frankly he never bothered me as much as Jake Sisko. That character contributed very little other than basebal simulations on the holodeck (yawn). :p

Until I play it, I'm not sure, as in for example what the advantages of being a Science based officer on a tactical cruiser would be. So I'll probably be starting a few games before I settle down with what Officer/ship combo I'm happy with. That said I do know what ships I want ;)

You can be any profession and still get that ship. You're not limited to a specific ship because of what path you choose.
And...Tactical here...working towards Sovey :P

Tactical, if we have to focus most likely martial arts (Kirk-punch FTW!) and I will likely split my ship focus between Escort and Cruiser (I wanna leapfrog a little T1 Cruiser, T2 and 3 escorts, and T3 and 4 cruisers...dont much care for the prometheus nor the stargazer style ships0

I'm going to be a crafter or whichever profession best suits that goal. If the profession has no overlap with being able to craft/make things in game then I'm just going to go science. Btw does anyone here know anything about the crafting or even if there is going to be crafting going on.
I'd like to focus on making improved shield/armor and reactors if at all possible. I don't even expect crafting to be in this given how little to nothing I have read on it on these forums. My expectations are quite low as to how developed the crafting level might be if any will be in this game. :(
200% shield and reactor regeneration/capacity FTMFW!!:p

what little we know about crafting would say that you need to go Enge to do that kind of crafting. VS medical / physical buffs from a SCI med officer. or a mod to upgrade your deflector from a sci guy. or even a mod to upgrade your phasers from a tac.

Thanks it gives me a better idea. My guess is that we will find out in game as to what profession will suit what best through pre-profession missions. That is my best guess. It would be nice if they would let us know more about the in game crafting and economy. It be cool if you build things using a replicator/s for certain things.

Science Sovereign lol
Since they've confirmed that you will be able to retain use of ships from previous tiers it makes more sense to hop ship classes so as to have a more flexible selection at endgame. From what I understand in EVE smaller ships still have a role to play in endgame battles and hopefully STO will allow for this as well. The devs have also stated that taking a ship from outside your specialty's standard configuration and customizing it to suit your taste and play style will be a perfectly viable option.
Ironically, while you mock the idea of someone taking a ship configuration outside of their Starfleet specialty, your forum namesake does exactly that throughout most of his career since I don't think Picard could be considered to have an Engineering specialty. You may wish to try borrowing his open-mindedness and diplomacy as well as his name.

Thats a bit harsh Picards specialty isn't in game! At a stretch he could be said to be tactical I suppose but he is no Sisko.
Oh man! Why did they leave out archeology/diplomacy as career types, can't be a Picard style captain without them!
Anyway tactical all the way for me, gotta show the Klingons when you want some proper arse-kicking done you get the Humans in!
I mean every week they beat up species with many times their strength in hand to hand combat using only Austin Powers-esque Judo-chops!
Just thinking of what Quark said at the Siege of AR-558 - thats my kind of crew.

Picard was science... remember the episode where he went back in time and never got stabbed in the chest and didnt get the artificial heart? He then never went on to become captain, and was shown in the science division. Also, I would consider archealogy a science...

Kirkian Tactical Officer. It's all about the escort ship.

I guess archeology is a science but its not the science you think of when you think science fiction!
It doesn't really fit with any of the science based skills that I can see them sticking in which will be physics/medicine based.
Maybe im just remembering all the episodes where Picard stares blankly at the sciencey technobabble, whereas Janeway would be producing most of it!

Tactical / Cruiser or Tactical / Escort
Not sure yet, will have to try them both out in beta to see which suits my play style.

Was it not that you need to invest points in sience tree to unlock tier ships? Thought i read somewhere that you need to invest points in sience to unlock the discovery class and so on. Im going sience 100% but im worried about the low amount of engineers :P

You need to invest points in science SHIPS...not science itself. They have stated many times you can be any career and pilot any ship you put the points into.

for me i will likely go tactical,
but on the ships past LTCmdr i do not know. it would depend on each ship if i can find a configuration that i like.
but i am leaning escort at the cmdr capt, level but i am at a stand off between the Prometheus or luna class

ima get my science officer hooked up with a nova fast enough to avoid most fights, and with the sensors to tear a cloaking effect to shreds. "hey guys he's over there, take those big old ships with those guns of yours and i'll just be on my way..."

Science all the way, I want to have an Intrepid Class. But on my wat to getting one, I want a Nova Class too!
The Intrepid Class is agile and can hold its ground in a fight. I dont like the look of the new Discovery Class, it doesn't look right for some reason?

Huh. You've got a point. There don't seem to be many folks interested in playing Engineers. Almost everyone wants to be Tactical or Science.
Why's that so? I mean, yeah. Science 'cause a lot of Trek fans are into the whole exploration and strange new worlds thing. Tactical 'cause, well, there's also a lot of space battles.
But technical stuff is a big thing in Trek. And engineers have always been major characters on the show. Scotty, Geordi, O'Brien, B'Elanna, Tucker...I'm surprised there ain't more interest in Engineers for STO.
Me, well, I'm totally with the Picard fans. No archeology or social sciences speciality for characters? I'm disappointed; I wanted to make my captain a diplomat trained in sociology or something. :)

Denobulan Medical Officer :)
But after I learned I would get banned for a G-Man look alike I need to start thinking about an actual Trek race to make. Denobulan isn't really on the list I just like Phlox. Humans are too boring. Vulcan's too logical. Ferengi too shallow. Trill too sex-obsessed. Betazoid too telepathic-sex-obsessed. Andorian too independant from the actual Federation. Don't really see Tellerites in later series and probably too hard to make in creator. Basically it is hard work thinking of a race

I'll need more information on the classes before I can make a permanent decision. That said, for the fun of it I'm leaning towards tactical or engineering with cruiser ships.
