Hopefully other retailers will offer the same things for the collectors editions. I will probably be preordering, but I will choose who to preorder from based on what they are offering. Not only that, but I have preordered from Gamestop, and had to wait a day or two after the street date to get the game, very disappointing.

I really like the free trial that you can give out to friends. Hopefully I can use my copy to install the game and give them the code so they can use it for the free trial, if thats the case I'm all for it. Of course I can understand them wanting the friends to buy a licence after the trial is up, thats fine though.

Letting people install your copy and useing a buddy pass would be a great way to bring in players. I know at least 8 people that want to try the game, but they dont really want to pay to try it.

Wow............this really makes the waiting really anti-climatic. Especially with it not even having any in-game items included. :(

Buddy Passes are useless, since they are likely to have 30 day trial periods.

And the Exclusive Starfleet Comm Badge? Pfft, you can get a high-quality metal pin from Paramount for a few dollars.

There is certainly time to add to it. If it does not bulk up, maybe Gamestop will throw in a subscription to Game (mis)Informer! It's always nice to be 'informed'. Isn't that exciting?

Depends on how long a trial period they get. And if they allow me to use my software to install the game so that my buddy does not have to buy it himself it is definately worth it! No?

Defiantly not worth the extra $30 so I will just get PO through amazon now the borg officer is more appealing imo...thanks for the info!

Man, I can honestly say this is my first major dissapointment with sto.

imo most defenitly not worth the extra dollars.

Unless Best Buy comes out with something killer, Amazon will be getting my bussiness.

I'm betting that it'll be a pin done in the style of the STO comm badge as opposed to the ones we're familiar with from TNG/DS9/Voyager.

That's the real head scratcher for me, maybe if it was a bluetooth device for vent...damn how cool would that have been? :(

Yes, that could've been an interesting deal. Would promote the in-game voice chat that's said to be in.

Personally, I would've saved the TOS Consitution for the Collector's Edition.

There is certainly time to add to it. If it does not bulk up, maybe Gamestop will throw in a subscription to Game (mis)Informer! It's always nice to be 'informed'. Isn't that exciting?

Sure there is time to add stuff, but if Cryptic doesn't act now. Because people will just go ahead and do the Gamestop or the Amazone pre-orders. Which leaves only a few people buying the Collector's Edition.

Depends on how long a trial period they get. And if they allow me to use my software to install the game so that my buddy does not have to buy it himself it is definately worth it! No?

It's rare that companies go above 30 days for a free trial.

And if Cryptic offers the online download as expected, then its a waste to share your disk with a buddy. Because, they could download and play STO for free, for the 30 days. Thus saving time in running around in sharing disks, so your friends could play.

10-15-2009, 12:27 AM
with only that included, not interested...

throw in a soundtrack cd
and some ingame item.

then i could be persuaded... but it would probably have to beat a borg BO and a constitution class starship

andeolus
10-15-2009, 05:55 AM
What a huge let down. For that kind of extra money I expect at a MINIMUM a soundtrack, exclusive ingame item, an art book, then maybe some kind of little token like the com bagde. No way this is worth an extra $30. Guess I'll be going with the regular version from Amazon after all.

I'm very disappointed.

thefrayl
10-15-2009, 06:14 AM
It is a bit of an underwhelming list, for sure. I'm all for the special packaging and art book, but I agree with the general view here that there should be a CE exclusive in-game item or two included as well.

Either way, if I decide to go CE or SE, I'm still waiting to see what Best Buy has up their sleeves for this one.

sounds like junk to me. I only buy CEs if they have IN GAME perks, even cosmetic. I'm guessing the com pin looks cheap. Ever see the Batman Arkam collectors? The batarang is a cheap molded plastic. I want extra uniforms or a bridge officer or ship parts. Something I'll actually use instead of go on a shelf in the basement.

lordpenquin
10-15-2009, 06:57 AM
and there's no mention of the constitution class ship. You get the ship with the standard $50 version but you pay $30 more and you don't?

BaakCha
10-15-2009, 07:25 AM
I'll bet 200 quatloos they will add a ingame bonus items to the collectors edition , Just you wait :):)

So long as it isn't actually a tribble. Maybe if it's a personal Orion slave girl for the Captain.

About the actual CE though, the goodies do seem reasonable for the price. I'm sure the Comm Badge alone would run about twenty bucks.

SilverComet
10-15-2009, 07:42 AM
I'm a little disappointed, part of the point of a CE is that you get perks in the game you got it for.

The art book is kind of standard for a CE, the buddy keys I would have assumed were with the game anyway as it's a perk with benefits for the developers as much as it does us. We're paying for a buddy key, which is then given to a friend who plays, if they decide to continue playing, the company gets more money anyway?

I would have expected something in game, an unlockable uniform, a TOS ship, a special module, a BO, an extra mission, the options for what are endless, the CE edition seems to only include perks that I'll see once, then leave in the box on my shelf collecting dust?

Sorry for my rant! *hides*

Edit: Cleaned up spelling and grammar.

JacobFlowers
10-15-2009, 07:43 AM
Eh. Who cares about a 'Collector's box'

Not gonna spend 80 bucks on that.

BaakCha
10-15-2009, 07:50 AM
The Borg and Connie perks are for pre-ordering, not for the game itself. So it would be reasonable to assume that if you pre-ordered the CE, you would still get the perk.

thefrayl
10-15-2009, 07:53 AM
hmmm no head start with the CE?

Usually, that sort of inclusion is generally specified closer to launch. And I fully expect a retailer or two to provide head start access. But then again, Amazon is claiming open beta access already...

From Amazon (http://forums.startrekonline.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=838433):

$49.99
-Potential free shipping (though it takes 5-10 days)
-Borg Bridge Officer (1 of 1,000,000 - Ha! )
-Beta access code
-also gives 2/2/10 as release date

Gamestop (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73923):
$49.99
-Constitution-class starship with blue phasers
-extra engineering station mod slot

I wonder when Cryptic will be able to confirm any of this? And if Cryptic will do their own special? Personally, I'd like the ship w/blue phasers + a Borg Bridge Officer. (Heck, I'll let him assimilate my entire crew so I can get a Borg ship!)

The extent to which you are creeping me out right now can not be expressed in mere words alone. Tribbles are hairy little dust magnets that have a breeding cycle worse than mice. You couldn't even use them for food; there isn't enough meat. Now an Orion slave girl, that's a perk I could curl up with; self-cleaning, easy on the eyes, and I could snack on her all night long.

World of Warcraft has over ten million concurrent subscribers. That makes it a lot easier to ask such an absurd price from die hard fans. On a side note though, the STO Collectors edition offered there is hardly 'uber' by any kind of standard.

I would estimate that the vast majority of people interested in Star Trek Online already have one or several comm badges, among other accessories. In addition, a few months into release and MMOs usually have a free trial available just by registering on their website - in addition to magazines frequently offering free trials as part of joint promotions.

You'd essentially be paying $30 for the paper used to make the art book. Unless said book is over fifty pages in length, that's hardly worth it at all.

The key words here are "street date". A street date is subject to change at any time. And if you'll notice, every Gamestop pre-order has that guarantee.

The street date is the date that the game will hit the streets. In other words it's the date they can start selling the product. Some companies might have a ship date of say, 1-1-10, which means they will ship the units out on that date. They might want that game to go sale on 1-10-10, so they tell retailers not to sell it until 1-10-10, even if they get it a couple of days early which most likely will happen. That date, 1-10-10 is the street date. So the street date is 'official'. Can it change? Yes. It can change because all official dates can change.

Gamestop might substitute their own street date when they don't have an official one, I'm not sure.

I generally take everything Gamestop employees tell me with a grain of salt. Especially concerning a matter such as this. But he may very well be right, and I don't think it would be too wild considering 2/2/10 seems to be the date found everywhere lately. But nonetheless, it is still subject to change at any given time.

I would be suprised if there wasn't atleast a slight delay after the official date is finally announced. It's an all to common occurance.

That list can't be accurate. CEs always come with an in-game pet. Always. Its like a law. So where is the tribble?

They're giving us a mini-shuttle to follow us around. It won't do anything but just fly circles around you. That's about it. Lol..Just kidding.

Heh. I still think of the Champions mini pets as a bonus item. I can already see a mini me Q following you around or a Tribble. :)

I hear the extra in game bonus in a playable unlocked Romulan Warbird. :p (I wish)

It's the MIR space station, complete with vodka, rusty pilons and sketchy wiring. When you activate the key you get a special mission where you have to make the space station fully functional. Needless to say, you'll be working on this mission all the way through end-game. When you finally complete the mission a solar flare shorts out all of the electronics and the space station drops out of orbit, crashing into Skywalker Ranch.

Pre-order Release Dates
GameStop.com works tirelessly with game publishers to ensure accurate release dates on our site. Occasionally, publishers run into problems during the production of a game and the release date must be changed. Sometimes dates move forward; more often they move back, and frequently they get changed more than once.

If a game is scheduled for release far in the future, the vendor may not even give us a date. In those cases we rely on the collective wisdom of our buying staff to estimate a date based on their knowledge of the industry and the vendor's history.

We guarantee that we will always post the best release date information available at the time of our posting. We know that you want that hot new game yesterday, and we want to be the company that gets it to you quicker than anyone else.

http://www.gamestop.com/gs/help/Pre-orders.aspx
__________________________________________________ ____________________________________

This is their loop hole. This covers them in the event that the release date changes. When beta has been going for awhile you can have a better idea of when the release date will be.

Also, when you hear it went gold then you know it is about to be released but until then posted dates are just speculation on the part of the merchants. People are stating well Amazon list the same release date as GameStop so it must be the actual release date.

Amazon copied GameStop’s release date because if they posted the ship date as being after GameStop’s release day who would have wanted to receive the game after they could have received in from GameStop and Amazon would lose business.

The comm badge is fully functional.

Is it "fully functional" in that I could use it to talk to the guys on the International Space Station or is it "fully functional" the way Data was with Tasha Yar? I suppose either way would be pretty surprising. ;)

Hmm, yeah, I guess I don't know what I expected, but I was expecting more for $30.

1) A collectible box? I'd just as soon have a digital download. More boxes = more crap to store. Better be awesome if I'm gonna want to keep it on a shelf.
2) Art book? Might be kinda cool to look at, but almost no one pages through these things more than once... and then you also have to store it, maybe that's when the collectible box comes in handy...
3) Buddy passes? Really? Free trials for friends is something we're paying extra for? I feel like this could've been a soundtrack, or a figurine, or special content or something. Especially since it's for Cryptic's benefit more than it is ours early on, unless of course you're just super desperate to get your pals in the game, but then again if they just wait like 3 months they'll probably have some sort of free trial anyways. This could really be something better. I'm almost insulted this is added as a CE bonus :|
4) Comm badge? Best part about CE -- if it's high quality. I bought 2 different comm badges back in the 90's for a total of about $20 new, and one of'em made noise. This better be dang good.

I should say, though, we're all jumping to conclusions as Cryptic hasn't officially released any details, nor do we have any pics, and this could all be inaccurate. But at first glance, I guess I'd like to see more. Hopefully there's more to it, or different options.

Care to shed some light Rekhan?

I'm betting that it'll be a pin done in the style of the STO comm badge as opposed to the ones we're familiar with from TNG/DS9/Voyager.

And what will that look like; the Perpetual Entertainment version (your avatar), or the one on their homepage (just the delta shield)?

hmm, wish there was an in game bonus, I probably wont be getting this CE.

I looked sometime last week and there was a tag saying that there was a special Constitution Class Ship. I wish i would have taken a screen shot but I found it when looking for other MMOs to play.

But I assure you it did say special in game ship and nothing about buddy codes.

I would jot this down as Bogus for sure. STO's news page would be the one to watch and the only one to trust.

Someone's not to aware on shipping charges. There's a reason Amazon will give you free shipping if your order is $20 or more and you don't mind waiting 5 - 10 business days (7-14 calendar days). Warehouses often make their money on the shipping charges, depending on how the business is set up. The store makes the money on the sale and the warehouse makes its money on shipping.

So, if you're going to buy the box for the extras, do you want free shipping and wait up to 14 days, or have it overnight for $18?

You would think so, but when I emailed Gamestop they told me that as of now, they have no intention of including the Constitution with the Collector's Edition.

The Constitution is a Pre-Order bonus.. if you order it from GS, you'll get the CE stuff... and the Ship. Whoever you spoke with was either stupid, or misinformed... Considering its GameStop.. I'd lean towards the former...

I agree 100%. Unless there are some decent exclusive in-game items I think i'll stick with the regular edition, especially considering the regular edition DOES include the bonus Constitution Class on GameStop.com, whereas the CE apparently doesn't.

I have the CE reserved for now, luckily I can switch that over later on if/when more official details are released.

Well let's take a look at what we already know, when I bought CO at GameStop, I entered the CD-Key and it came up as "CO Retail - GameStop" so it seems apparent that different retailers are given different CD keys, and that's where they determine which special bonus in-game item you get. That's how I got the GameStop offered armor or whatever it was for CO that was exclusive to GameStop. There was no extra piece of paper given with any sort of code or download instructions, it was tied to the product key.

It would seem to me that they will manufacture specific copies of STO for GameStop, and specific ones for Amazon, etc, all with unique CD keys that allow you to download the Constitution, Borg Officer, etc. for the specific retailer that you purchased your game from.

Now it would make sense that they would only manufacture ONE version of the CE since it's a far more limited run, and perhaps these CEs will be distributed to all the different vendors, therefore since the keys aren't retailer specific you wouldn't recieve ANY of the pre-order bonus items.

Kanharn
10-24-2009, 11:49 PM
so does the CE come with the preorder bonus or not?

Some game company's do not offer extra items but let the distributors give these out to help there marketing or everyone would pre - order from CP.

CP make the game so they profit no matter who sells it.

Look at Fallen earth, every game company had different in game Items and rewards they offered in game to add a bit of variety to gamers if they pre order from them.

Also if u got Fallen earth before the release date, you got access to the live servers a week early.

I'm hoping this is a new trend for MMo makers as Im not the kind of peep to pay more for a fancy box or a Comm Badge rofl

Since the Admirals Jacket offer is with the TOS Season 3 BR DVD, I doubt the offers would be CD Specific.

Not to mention Cryptic would be insulting those who bought both Gamestop and Amazon preorders.

Admiral's Jacket may well indeed be included on a piece of paper that has a seperate item redemption key on it, but the retailer specific game-included items for CO were tied to your CD key!

Durakken

So to get everything what is needed is...

$80 for Blu-Ray Star Trek: TOS Season 3 (Admiral Jacket)
$80 for Star Trek Online Collectors Edition (Comm Badge, Art Book, and Box)
$50 for Preorder Gamestop version (Constitution Class. Equipped with blue phasers & extra engineering station mod slot)
$50 for Preorder Amazon version (Borg bridge Officer)

So to get everything, which you may not be able to get on 1 account, you would need $260, not including taxes or shipping. Not bad for an overall price, but the problem is there are no pictures of any of this stuff or confirmation that it exists or that you can get it all on one account. Assumably you can the preorder ver stuff with the admiral jacket, but might not be able to get both...

there is also no mention of whether there will be an ingame store or if these will ever be available later in some other way.

So the best option seems to be preorder the version you want... and then wait for the CE and the Admiral jacket till later. More than likely there will be plenty not sold or available later of those...Of course you could pre order both and then get screwed later on when they sell it in their store v.v

I just put in my preorder for Amazon. I love TOS and the original Constitution class ship, but there's a lot of other ship designs I like too, and I know there will be better ships available in game. However, from what we know about Bridge Officers, we'll be able to train them in skills and carry them throughout our careers, so it seems to me the borg officer would probably get a more use and longevity than the ship. I'm also a roleplayer, and I know I will have a lot of fun writing up a background story for my borg officer.

The Gamestop Collector's Edition is definitely underwhelming, and it seems silly to mean they aren't including the in-game Constitution class ship or some other neat in-game item.
