One thing that I feel makes Cryptic's games far superior than many other MMO's is that they give your character the ability to jump. One of the first games that I ever played online was Star Wars Galaxies and when I saw that the Jedi could do little more than hop, I shook my head in frustration. Next came City of Heroes and suddenly having the freedom to jump, jump and flip, jump and attack was amazing. I figured after this "breakthrough" that all games would soon have this ability.

Sadly not all games. So I'm wondering what the jumping will be like in STO. I figure plenty of players will be steamed if their away teams get stuck while trying to run over a bush or pebble.

I haven't seen any footage of jumping, although some of the outdoor looks rugged.

I agree. The first MMO i played had jump but then i played another and when there was no jump i almost cried. jumping is cool and puts a lot into a game. Like being able to jump on a building or over an obstacle. Not having the ability to jump ruins the game for me.

heh, I actually made a comment about this in one of STOked's earlier episodes. In our PAX review.

During ground gameplay, I was able to take my avatar and hop straight up onto a rock that stood a good foot above the avatar's head. Boing!

Superpowered Fedrats! BEWARE!

I'm torn about it. I really didn't like it when I was able to do it during the gameplay demo, but at the same time, it's really frustrating to be confined by geometry in a gameplay environment. And considering that a lot of content appears as though it will be randomly generated, the ability to leap over obstacles may turn out to be a necessity, and not just a luxury.

Jumping is pretty good for sanity reasons. There are plenty of ansi players that like a good jumping system, just for the sake of cantina chair hopping. Plus I need to be able to jump out of the way when the Klingons get drunk and throw things.

I've seen players hopping a bit inside a klingon ship in one of the videos. Looked like a reasonable jump animation.

I hate games where I'm nailed down to the floor. I don't really hop around for no reason, but if I can't jump at all, then I feel shackled.

While I hate being nailed to the floor too... seeing bunnyhopping Klingons is going to get old fast.

I love jumping too ... jumping while I'm running, jumping during combat, jumping over terrain, jumping on buildings ...

But this thread will soon get a plethora of post by people who say its lame and WoW'ish.

Must be the uniform; makes everything lighter. Lol

Or maybe there are a few planets where the gravity isn't Earth-normal. That would be pretty unique for a MMO.

hmmm... can't find it now but I remember a dev that when he was asked if planetary environments (gravity, atmo... etc.) would affect our characters he said your jump height would be affected by the planets gravity though he implied the effect was only slight.

Am I completely koo-koo or does anyone else remember this?

I think in another thread it was implied that targeting would be a lock, and not something like a twitch FPS. So the bunny hop would be pretty pointless for a defense measure.

Hey Drake, I can see the PM you sent me on this topic, but can't access it due to some weird forum issue?

ASK HERE.

I am all for jumping, but I do not like PvP when the other person does nothing but jump in circles around you shooting.

Then everyone is just jumping and doing circles all the time... :(

With that said, better to jump than not to jump.

Jumping is fine to me so long as its linked to some kind of stamina pool or something. Infinite rapid fire bunny jumps ARE lame, as well as extremely bad looking.

Like children playing World of Warcraft characters, yes THAT was annoying.

erm .... :p

My main is a Night Elf hunter - they have a fantastic somersault when they jump - I just can't help it ..

Blood Elves have a nice 'Spin' when they jump.

In Star Wars Galaxies there was no jumping (except the emote /jump) & so the jedi's movements were very static. My Night Elf Druid, with her Stave could somersault over the mob's head & smack them from behind, this I felt was more Jedi'ish than those in SWG.
